BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY



Our 2025 annual catalogue titled “Bohemian Rhapsody” is a literal description of our artists… unconventional, expressing ecstatic passion, interested in unusual things, all forms of the arts, and ignoring accepted ways of living…..this is apparent in the heart and soul of the art they created…… never knowing and always revealing. These are the individuals who have enlightened humanity with an uninterrupted visual dialogue throughout history.
It has been one year since we last published a catalogue devoted to our vast inventories, touching upon our passion for post-war and modern works in a variety of mediums. When you peruse the following pages, please pause a moment and realize that each work of art has a backstory. When and where was it created? Where did it go after its creation, and to whom? Over the years of its initial acquisition, who lived with it and who viewed it? Was it loaned to exhibitions or museums? Has it traded hands only once or numerous times, and eventually, how did we acquire it? Well… all the above are wonderfully curious questions one doesn’t generally think about, but in my life, it is all I think about. The backstories and future of all these wonderful works of art have finally come home to me, until they are passed on to you and future generations.
We continue to be driven by our curiosity and intuition regarding history, scholarship, knowledge, and taste, which is reassured by our experience and foresight. We purchase important works of art daily and own everything we offer, as we are passionate in what we do without the pretension that exists in the current art world.
It is important to remember the basis of collecting is about living with art in one’s own environment. How one creates that environment is totally up to the individual, and this indeed is an exciting process that can enhance and change one’s life—and will continue to do so forever. These wonderful artists have become our teachers, and as time goes by, their moving statements will continue to be revealed, repeatedly giving the collector a new chapter depending on their mood and what day it is.
It seems every time I read about art in the news these days, the only topic is about money and what some work has sold for—and usually, they only mention works that have sold in the tens of millions of dollars. The art world has become more about money than art, and art is the purest addiction that exists because of its mystery and the unexplainable hold it has on one. Art as money has become a fleeting high for a wealthy minority that threatens to kill its true euphoria. Like drinking and driving, aesthetics and money don’t mix well. The quest for instant gratification ignores the traditional fundamentals of connoisseurship and education, leaving a fragile foundation, which will eventually crumble. When I fell into this business fifty years ago, it never entered my mind that this was about money—and for me, it still isn’t. All the above questions still intrigue me, spark my enthusiasm, and fuel my quest to absorb new ideas as the mystery of the art around me unfolds.
VFA’s annual catalogue is our signature statement that no other gallery comes close to producing. It shows our vast inventories, along with our taste and vision revealing itself. For me, art is the purest addiction that exists, and over time I have realized that its eclectic relationship with color, form, and space connects everything in mysterious ways.
Once again, we have put our heart and soul into what we believe to be a complete statement for you to appreciate. Hopefully, our passion and enthusiasm will fuel your quest to absorb new ideas as the mystery of art unfolds around you.
