These PLAY4BCNA events bring families, clubs, league leaders and communities closer together. The dedication shown by everyone involved – the players, volunteers, organisers, and spectators – is truly inspiring.

That community and connection is reflected warmly in BCNA’s relationship with Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). While we began “pinking up” together over a decade ago, our official partnership began over six years ago, and since then our connection has become stronger and our communities more united.
So, thank you for getting behind PLAY4BCNA Pink Sports Day round this May. VAFA’s endorsement of the PLAY4BCNA round makes a powerful statement and exemplifies each clubs continued commitment to social good. This year we are aiming to raise $30,000 across the VAFA club community. Funds are raised through the league and club fundraising pages and the purchasing and wearing of the on field BCNA socks, hosting a bake sale or sausage sizzle, arranging a raffle fundraiser, or holding more formal events such as a Mother’s Day Luncheon or Ladies’ Night.

We know these events are often motivated by the lived experience within your own communities, because statistically – with 1 in 7 Australian women diagnosed – everyone knows somebody who is affected by breast cancer. Every day in Australia, 58 people are diagnosed with breast cancer, meaning 21,000 Australians a year have their lives forever changed in an instant.
As we look ahead to the May 2025 PLAY4BCNA Round, we can’t wait to see the PLAY4BCNA pink socks around the grounds and enjoy these wonderful community events while honouring those affected by breast cancer. Celebrate the love and generosity shown by the individuals and communities that support them. I thought they were the better-performed team over the four quarters, but we certainly had our opportunities to win. “We just need to tidy up some parts of our games to allow us to be winning those games against the very best teams.”
Old Haileybury continued their promising return to Premier Men’s with an impressive wire-to-wire win over University Blacks at Princes Park. The Bloods controlled the football and turnovers cost Blacks dearly, as they conceded 8 goals to 3. Ultimately, Old Haileybury’s finishing efficiency proved to be the difference. They booted 11.2 in the first half to lead by 45 points at half-time and, from there, managed to control the game as they cruised to their second win of the season.
Round 4’s other thriller was at Harry Trott Oval as St Bernard’s continued their impressive start to 2025 with a gritty 7-point win over Collegians. The opening term was free-flowing with a combined 11 goals giving the Snowdogs a 6-point lead, before the Lions booted 3 goals to 2 to lead by a point at the half.
Daniel Ward (Old Haileybury): “Overall, a pleasing performance against a side who we respect greatly and are always well prepared. In the second quarter, we got our ball movement to a level we’re trying to achieve and kicked 7.2. “Credit to Blacks, who lifted their effort in the second half as the game became a bit of a scrap.
The home team kicked the first two goals of the third term, before the Dogs responded and the arm-wrestle continued – Collegians by 3 points at the last change. The Lions struck first in the final term to get out to a 10-point lead, but two goals from Ben Huggard put the Snowdogs back in front before Alex Lukic’s 4th goal handed Collegians the lead 16 minutes in. However, the visitors refused to yield, and a Charlie Vague opportunist goal and Luke Di Lizio’s courageous pack mark and 30-metre set shot sealed it for St Bernard’s.
Dale Bower (Uni Blacks): “We were outplayed by Old Haileybury in the first half and, in particular, the second quarter. “We still have plenty to work on and will look to respond with a far better performance next week.” Old Brighton came from behind to overpower St Kevin’s and defend their one-game lead atop the table. A stunning individual performance from former OG Sam Barnett saw SKOB power to the lead in the third term as he booted 3 of his team’s 5 goals for the term, as they opened up a handy 13-point advantage at the last change.
Steve Alessio (St Bernard’s): “It was a fantastic contest all day with both teams unwilling to give up. In the end, it was a matter of who could hang in there longest. “We were determined to keep the early momentum of our season going. Now we face a red hot, in-form Old Xavs team - a great opportunity to find out where we are with our development as a team.”
Marcel Bruin implored his Tonners outfit to open the game up, and they responded with the first 3 goals of the final quarter to hit the front at the 17-minute mark. SKOB regained the lead 3 minutes later via a composed set-shot from second-gamer Tom Ferguson – his first senior goal for the club. Felix Flockart ultimately delivered the winning goal for the Tonners via a tight set shot at the 28-minute mark. Old Brighton posting their 12th straight win at Fortress Brighton after another nailbiter over St Kevin’s – the final margin 7 points – making it a combined margin of just 26 points from their last 6 clashes!
Jordie McKenzie (Collegians): “They were able to get out of the blocks with a sharp start. Bernard’s outworked us and gave Watson and Co. plenty of good looks up forward. “Our second and third quarters were much better, where we were able to wrestle back the momentum. “Our last quarter was very disappointing. Bernards once again outworked us, and they were able to stand tall in some big pivotal moments.”
Marcel Bruin (Old Brighton): “What a contest, both teams didn’t give an inch. Tough, contested game that was close all day. We both had share of the momentum and ascendancy for patches, but scoring was difficult with defence the feature. “Coming into the last quarter, we challenged our group to take the game on and inject some speed, which they did a great job of.” THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2025
Old Xaverians made a huge statement by rolling over reigning premiers Old Scotch with a blistering second-half. The Cardinals booted 4.4 to 1.2 to lead by 20 points at the first break, before Xavs responded with a 5-goal second quarter that levelled the scores at the half. 2
ROUND 4 RESULTS The visitors then took complete control, booting four unanswered goals in the third term, followed by a withering final term that saw them slam on an incredible 9.2 to 0.2. In the end, the Cards were held to just 4 behinds after the main break as Xavs careered away with 18 goals to 2 after quarter time to score an eye-catching 81-point win after a mindblowing 101-point turnaround in just three quarters of footy. Dan Donati (Old Xavs): “Old Scotch got the early jump on us with their intensity and ball movement difficult to stop in the first. It took us a while to find the tempo. Once we did, we managed to get things on our terms to draw level at half time. “Obviously, the second half was outstanding from our perspective. I thought defensively we held up super, our pressure and tackling were great, and to get reward on the scoreboard this week was really pleasing.” Mark Gnatt (Old Scotch): “It was a tale of two halves for us, and our best was very good early on, with some of our new faces hitting the scoreboard. “However, there was a bit of a reality check in the second half where the experience of Xavs broke the game open. They were able to intercept the ball with relative ease in our back half, and then their ability to spread and open up the ground was very good.” The final game of Round 4 was at Melbourne Uni Oval as University Blues hosted De La Salle. Despite the Blues dominating territory, the visitors led throughout the entire first half, before the Blues responded with 5 goals to 1 to take control in the third quarter. Goals to Charlie Furphy and Charlie Cotter in the final term put the result beyond doubt, as the Blues squared their ledger at 2-2, leaving De La Salle still hunting their first win. Matt Smith (Uni Blues): “We seemed off the boil a bit for the first half, mainly with poor skill execution. “Second half looked a lot more like the style we want to play, although we were wasteful in front of goal. “A step in the right direction, with plenty of improvement still to be found.” Nick Hyland (De La Salle): “I thought we controlled the game in the first half. We defended the ground the best we have all year and moved the ball well. We just let ourselves down with the last ball going inside 50. “A one-goal to five third quarter proved the difference. Our intensity dropped, and we didn’t defend the ground well. Credit to the opposition who made us pay. From there, we were chasing the game and couldn’t reel them in.”

Saints, Stars and Fields stay perfect after tough tests in Round 4 Another intriguing weekend of William Buck Premier Women’s action unfolded in Round 4, headlined by a top-four clash between Old Geelong and Old Scotch, while other contenders continued to build their resumes in a competitive start to the season.
St Kevin’s similarly kept their undefeated record intact with a 5.7 (37) to 0.6 (6) win over West Brunswick. While the Magpies had patches of strong play, they couldn’t convert their opportunities, with St Kevin’s defence locking down key areas of the ground.
Old Scotch extended their unbeaten run with an assertive 8.6 (54) to 4.7 (31) win over Old Geelong at Camberwell Sports Ground. A fast start proved crucial for the Stars, kicking three late majors in the opening term to create separation after a tight start to the quarter.
Magpies coach Ryan Wardel said the match was decided by turnover and structure. “We turned the ball over too often and were not consistent enough at using the open spaces of the ground. St Kevin’s defended the corridor really well, and we got caught out wide,” he said. “We felt the game was a bit closer than the scoreboard suggested — we just weren’t able to convert our chances into goals.
OGs coach Jack Crameri said the game provided valuable perspective against one of the competition’s benchmark sides. “We’ve loved playing all these teams from in and around the finals last year to test ourselves. We know we’ve now got plenty of things to work on and an understanding of what Scotch and others can do,” he said. “That first quarter – where they kicked three late – was the major difference in the game.”
St Kevin’s coach Tom Purcell was again pleased with the effort and development of his young group. “We’ll continue to work on connection into our forward 50,” he said. Purcell was glowing in his praise for Mischa Beaconsfield, Molly Wilson, Angelique Argiros and Anastasia Malamas.
The Stars shared plenty of the Sherrin with three shining the brightest in front of the big sticks to finish with multiple goals for the day each: Mia Cowan, Maiya Stobie, and Eloise Defina. Meanwhile for the visitors, Ciara Sexton and Jessie Gleeson impressed for the OGs in their first match up against the reigning premiers.
Fitzroy recorded their second win of the season, overpowering Old Yarra Cobras 7.6 (48) to 1.3 (9) at Doncaster Reserve. The Roys’ defensive unit stood tall, restricting the Cobras to just one goal for the day and creating plenty of offensive spread from the back half. Coach Nathan Jumeau praised his side’s growth across four quarters. “Really happy with the backline — they’re starting to defend together as a group and spread really well,” he said. “We’re still not quite making the most of our inside 50s, but we’re improving each week.” Jumeau was full of praise for Jaime Nelson and believes she’s solidifying herself as one of the best rucks in William Buck Premier.
Meanwhile Caulfield Grammarians also maintained their perfect start to the season with a 6.6 (42) to 2.1 (13) win over Kew. The Bears brought strong physicality and were competitive in the contest but were unable to gain any ascendancy over the Fields. Kew coach Emily Avery was pleased with the contest but noted areas for growth, especially ahead of the ball. “Happy with the team’s physicality and our ability to contest…looking forward to working on our forward craft and setting up the ground.”
Williamstown CYMS continued their dominant form with a 17.14 (116) to 3.2 (20) win over MUWFC in the Sunday standalone fixture. Loren Mills (seven goals) and Alessia Acquaro (six) combined for 13 majors as the CYs’ forward line clicked into gear early and never looked back.
Under the leadership of their skipper Serena Kuo, who finished with two goals to her name, the Fields looked comfortable on their home deck and are backing up a much-improved 2024 season, posing as real contenders in the top tier this year. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2025

Coach Xavier Smith highlighted the growing belief in his side. “Over the last two weeks, our players have grown in confidence and are playing more of the way we want to,” he said. “Our midfield was on top from the first bounce, and the forward line took full advantage. When we weren’t converting, we did a fantastic job locking it in.”

Despite the defeat, MUWFC coach Michael Goldsmith remained upbeat about his side’s progression. “There were lots of positives. We lifted our pressure and intensity as the game went on,” he said. “Getting on the scoreboard was a reward for that effort and gives us a solid foundation to build on.” Bridget Hudson’s return was a highlight, slotting three goals, while Jo Collins, Asha Price and Eve Sheehan impressed.

The Hoers are unbeaten, while Old Camberwell, Old Trinity, Old Carey and Old Geelong are split on percentage, each side starting the year 3-1 and enjoying a win in Round Four.

Old Geelong has its second win on the trot after overcoming a slow start to defeat the Hampton Rovers, 17.13 (115) to 11.5 (71) at Como Park. The OGs took until the 32-minute mark of the first quarter to kick their first goal, Sam Hodge setting up Nick Lucena from just inside the 50-metre arc. The siren would sound shortly after the next centre ball-up. “(I) thought we were able to fix up some of our contest stuff after quarter time, which helped get our outside game going,” said OGs coach Nick Dixon.
The Ts pressed on in the second, kicking six goals to two and dominating disposals (+29), marks (+11) and inside 50s (+8), carrying a 22-point advantage into the second half. The margin would not dip below 17 points until the final siren, the Ts sticking fast to win their third game of the year. For OMs coach Nathan Brown, there are similarities between his young group and the one Old Trinity had on its return to Premier B footy in 2023. “All credit to Donald and Old Trinity yesterday - they played outstanding footy from start to finish, broke it open in the middle part of the game and managed it from there,” said Brown. “Can’t fault our effort until the end but (we) just got beat around (the) contest by an impressive Old Trinity outfit, and just battled to get anything going from there.”

For the Rovers, coach Marty Pask was disappointed in two key lapses that cost Hampton on the scoreboard. “We dropped our application for 20 minutes in the second quarter, and (for) five minutes of the third quarter,” he said “(I) liked the response thereafter, and our second half. We showed that we have character in the group.”
Old Carey’s season of statements has been punctuated by its biggest win to date, a remarkable 16-goal second half the main attraction in a ten-goal romp over Caulfield Grammarians.
Old Ivanhoe set themselves up for victory early at home against Williamstown CYMS, kicking the first seven goals of the game and keeping the CYs scoreless in the first quarter. The CYs would kick nine of the next 13 though, ratcheting back a 59-point deficit in the third quarter to a 14-point loss at full time, the Hoers winning 11.15 (81) to 9.13 (67).
The Panthers kicked only three goals to the long break and trailed by ten points, wrestled the advantage off the Fields with a six-goal-to-three third term, then ran in ten goals in the final quarter to win 19.16 (130) to 10.10 (70). ROUND 4 RESULTS But after Patrick Naish’s second goal of the afternoon at the 20-minute mark of the third quarter, the Hoers did not kick another goal, while the CYs raged home with seven of their own. “Our manic game style caught up with us a bit and we weren’t able to play at the level for the whole game,” explained Gieschen. CYs coach Con Terzoglou took positives out of the last 45 minutes of game time but was left wanting form his team’s lack of intensity to start. “Our tackling pressure was ineffective, so we were not able to slow them down,” he said. “(It) allowed them to continually move the ball, and ultimately kept us chasing. So, we had no control of the game and were on the back foot.” Old Camberwell is the last of the 3-1 teams, having overcome an undermanned Fitzroy at Brunswick Street Oval. The Wellers incrementally increased their advantage at every break, and across the later stages of the third quarter and the early stages of the fourth kicked seven goals to one to secure a commanding 40-point lead, eventual 14.7 (91) to 10.11 (71) victors. Coach Neil Connell felt his side was in command of the pace of the game for much of the afternoon in a strong response to a Round Three loss to Old Carey - and was pleased by his side’s response to some half time changes. “We wanted to control the ball more working our way forward, not trying to turn it into a running game up and back for both teams,” Connell explained. “I felt the boys adapted well to a slight change in tactics, although the scoreboard didn’t reflect this, but I felt the third quarter set us up for the win.” Fitzroy coach Travis Ronaldson lauded his “brave” team, which was two players down in the first quarter. “The intent and desire to work was outstanding and I thought we had had some good periods throughout the game where we got on top,” he said. A remarkable quirk of fixturing means Round Five could be the tightest weekend of the Premier B season, first playing second, third playing fourth, fifth playing sixth, seventh playing eighth and ninth playing tenth.

Old Brighton continued their campaign for back-to-back flags, with a compelling 91-point win over St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers. Streaming out of the gates, the Tonners used their handball and running game to get on a roll, allowing themselves a 59-point lead at the major break.
“As the saying goes, defence wins football, and our defenders truly embodied that today.” On the offensive front, it was veteran duo Georgia Harris and Mia-Rae Clifford that led the charge, finishing with three goals apiece.
The Tigers, led by Eliza Cooper, worked hard to slow the charge in the second half, however, the experience and polish of Old Brighton proved too much to handle, with the final score reading 14.11 (95) to 0.4 (4).
While Westbourne should be encouraged by the fact, they were able to outscore Port Melbourne in two of the quarters, they will need to work on their lapses in concentration and making the most of their periods of momentum if they want to compete with the best sides going forward.
Old Brighton’s coach, Andrew Grant, praised his team’s defensive efforts, stating, “Our defence was brilliant and did not let the St Bedes forwards have any space.”
Beaumaris are yet to drop a game after overcoming Old Melburnians by 22 points. The win preserves Beaumaris’ place in second on the ladder, while Old Melburnians drop to fifth, just missing the top four by percentage.
Grant also highlighted the individual performance of captain Cat O’Brien, who dominated the contest, regularly getting the ball out to the runners on the outside. O’Brien was ably supported by regular performers, Jasmine and India Tait, who are yet to go a week without featuring in the best players.
It was a close contest for the first half, with Beaumaris taking a 7-point lead into the major break, before the Sharks found themselves able to pull further ahead in the third term. The Omlettes wrestled back control in the final term, however, were unable to cause any serious damage, with the final scores reading 6.8 (44) to 2.10 (22).
While hard to identify any areas of improvement from an almost flawless performance, Grant noted that the team needs to continue working on fitness and running ability.
Sunday Hollingsworth was a standout for Beaumaris, while Taylah Tysoe was able to make an immediate impact in her first game for the year, returning to the Sharks after making her VFLW debut for the Darebin Falcons.
The new kid on the block, Port Melbourne Chargers, impressed yet again, defeating Westbourne Grammarians with a final score of 7.9 (51) to 2.3 (15). The Chargers set the tone early, racing to a 4.2 (26) lead by the first break, with Westbourne unable to get on the scoreboard. Credit to the Westbourne side, they used the break to compose themselves and were able to work their way into the game in the second term.
Old Melburnians coach Nic Stephens acknowledged the challenge of facing a more experienced team, noting, “They were probably a bit more efficient with their ball usage than we were.” Despite the loss, Stephens praised his team’s improved skills and physicality, as well as their resilience and positive attitude after two tough losses.
Unfortunately, the third quarter told a similar story to the first, with the margin pushed out to 41 points, leaving Westbourne with too big a mountain to climb in the final term.
Steph Barnett received special mention for her work across the half-back line, returning from a dislocated finger to take numerous intercept marks. Captain Gee Dunlop and newcomer Caitlyn Bayley also impressed, with Bayley providing strong ruck work and Ellie Faulks excelling in multiple positions.
Chargers coach Harriet Cooper believes the victory reinforced the importance of starting strong, and the impact of clear communication. “We won the game by sticking diligently to our game plan right from the outset and harnessing our positive energy in that crucial first quarter,” Cooper stated. “We came out of THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2025

Marcellin got off to a hot start, leading 2.5 (17) to 0.0 (0) at the end of the first quarter. In the second term, Parkdale pulled out some of the best football they have played this year, however, Marcellin still held a comfortable lead at 4.7 (31) to 3.2 (20). Marcellin were able to flex their muscles in the second half, adding a further 12 majors, while only allowing the Vultures one, to take their win-loss record to an even ledger. Bridie Feehan and Zoe Glascott starred on the day, with Glascott finding five goals to claim second place in the competition goalkicking tally. Maddy Rush played her best game since returning from the UK this year, contributing three majors of her own. Despite the loss, Parkdale Vultures should take some joy out of the fact they were able to achieve their highest score of the season. Courtney Bennett made a huge impact, finishing the day with three goals, while Shanae Carter fought tirelessly all day.

A largely competitive 16.18 (114) to 9.8 (62) loss at the hands of St Bedes/Mentone Tigers marks the Two Blues’ first game that has ended with four on the bench this season.

Coach Craige Milward is understandably relieved with this week’s clean bill of health but concedes the side he is currently fielding needs to be ‘better for longer’. “Things clicked late in the first (quarter), but we couldn’t control tempo early in the second. We put a player behind the ball and played some ‘keepings off’ to stay competitive and curtail momentum in the second half,” Milward said.
The result sees the Gryphons languishing in 10th, but in some small comfort, the 14-point loss is their secondsmallest losing margin of the season. First-year coach Guy Martyn is hunting four-quarter performances, and with them, victories. “The story of our season so far has been our inconsistency within matches, and Saturday’s was no different,” he said.
Particularly frustrating for Milward is his team’s turnovers, with the Tigers scoring 7 goals from this source – an amount very close to the game’s final margin. “Turnovers are something we do have some control over. Our decision making and execution by foot needs to get back to last year’s level,” he said.
In Alphington, a fire-breathing Beaumaris Sharks outfit bounced back in emphatic fashion. Josh Bourke’s men registered 49 unanswered points to start the game, and won every quarter, running out 16.14 (110) to 3.3 (21) victors over Parkside.
The result sees St Bedes/Mentone stay just one win adrift of the two undefeated teams atop the ladder. On an inaccurate afternoon for the Tigers, Jake Harding kicked 5 majors, while Jack Behnk could not replicate last week’s heroics, registering 2 goals amidst increased defensive attention.
Strong tackling, manic pressure and an ability to repeatedly outnumber at contests were hallmarks of the Beaumaris’ performance, and particularly their early dominance. Nine front-half turnovers in the first quarter alone pleased Bourke, as did ‘team first behaviours’, with both of these facets receiving praise during his upbeat quarter-time address.
AJAX’s impressive ability to share their scoring load was again on display, with 11 different goal kickers contributing to their 14.12 (96) to 11.9 (75) victory over Mazenod, in Glen Waverley. Ahead of the match, AJAX coach Lachlan Buszard was wary of opposite number Peter Banfield’s ‘shrewdness’, and given the result is the Jackas’ first victory by less than 9 goals in the season’s early sledding, his caution would appear justified.
“When we get our team-first attitude and behaviours right, the other stuff will be okay,” he added, post-match. These behaviours were noticeably led by leaders Josh Trew, Callum Linehan and Riley Virtue, who set the tone from the outset.
“Mazenod were really good…hats off to them. They will be a big threat to the comp as the season gets deeper,” Buszard said, while praising Nodders’ players Mitchel D’Angelo for his run, forward Hayden Boyce for his hands, and Fletcher Ford, for his ruck craft. On his side of the fence, Remy Spicer, Brandon Efron and Sam Hendler drew Buszard’s commendations.
The debuts of Tom Federici, Harvey Backman and Angus Marcombe were all solid, with the team’s raucous celebration of Marcombe’s major, memorable. Parkside coach Rick Frost will look for growth opportunities in the wash up from the lopsided result. “It was awesome for our players to learn so much from a far superior opposition. Their execution and pressure stand out, as does their willingness to hunt for the ball,” Frost said.

ROUND 4 RESULTS VFL-listed youngster Oliver Green continues to deliver on pre-season promise, again finding himself in the Parkdale Vultures’ best, after a 18.20 (128) to 10.7 (67) victory over Marcellin. Coach Owen Lalor gushed over Green’s ‘beautiful kick’, while praising the teen’s willingness to work on his game while awaiting opportunities at Casey. Lalor explained that the scoreboard flattered his side, calling the match ‘a real arm wrestle’, but is well pleased with his side’s fitness. Run and carry well into final quarters, are now a reliable hallmark of the Parkside brand. Vice-captains Jarrod Peake and Matthew Emmanouil again led the charge for the Vultures. Ruck-forward Peake’s versatility is proving invaluable in the absence of last year’s league-leading goalkicker Mitch Brown. Emmanouil’s clearances are ensuring midfield dominance for his side, most weeks, with Saturday’s clash, no exception. Marcellin coach Bernie Dineen’s chances were impacted by the late withdrawal of Tom Dennis – who had been among his best in both games he played this year – along with two concussions. After a strong start, ‘getting the defensive balance wrong for a quarter’ cost Marcellin, highlighted best by Parkdale kicking 3 goals in 3 minutes, into the breeze. “Our defensive instincts need work – too many rolling back instead of coming up means goals are being kicked over our heads,” said Dineen. “Our offence – our ‘stretch and spread’ – are improving, but our defence informs our offence,” he added.

Women’s Rising Star Nominee Olive McLean (Old Melburnians) The VAFA congratulates Olive McLean from Old Melburnians Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 4 Anytime Fitness Women’s Rising Star. Olive has made a profound impact for the Omlettes both on field, as a dynamic forward, and off field, as a vivacious teammate. What the club said: 2025 is Ollie’s first year with the Omlettes. She’s come to us from Loreto and Sandringham Dragons and made an instant impact on the team. I first heard about Ollie from her older brother Xander who came up to me one preseason training and completely undersold Ollie by saying that she was keen to try out for the team. I laughed a little bit and told him if she was keen to play then she was absolutely welcome to join the Omlettes, I had no idea she’d end up being as good as she’s been for us. On the field Ollie is fiery and single-minded in her attack on the footy where she’s able to make defenders look silly with her speed and balance as she cuts through the pack before snapping a shot on goal. The sky is the limit for Ollie as she continues to hone her craft and gets comfortable with her teammates, she’s going to really stake her claim as the premier small forward in the competition. Off the field Ollie brings a calm and confident vibe with a hilarious dry sense of humour that has really endeared herself to her teammates. As a coach, one of the things I love most about Ollie is her willingness to share her experience to help all our girls grow and improve. A huge congratulations to Ollie for the nomination as a reward for all the work she’s put in so far this season!
Men’s Rising Star Nominee Boston Dowling (Canterbury) The VAFA congratulates Boston Dowling from Old Trinity Football Club who has been nominated as the Round 3 Anytime Fitness Men’s Rising Star. Boston is a star in the making, already having significant impact for the T’s as well as at higher level, on Collingwood’s VFL list. What the club said: Old Trinity Senior Coach, Donald McDonald said of Boston: “Boston played one game for Old Trinity Seniors in 2023 while still in Year 12, representing Trinity Grammar at AGV level as well as playing for Oakleigh Chargers. In 2024, Boston again represented Old Trinity for one game, in between his duties with Oakleigh Chargers and Collingwood VFL. This season, Boston has played two games for Old Trinity and has really made an impact, rucking as well as pushing forward and providing a strong marking option. Boston has great agility for his size, a terrific competitive nature, and with more experience at senior level, we have no doubt he has an exciting future ahead of him. Scotch, Xavs and Caulfield all triumph in come-from-behind classics St Kevin’s have also bounced back from their abandoned affair in Round 3 with a comprehensive victory over Williamstown CYMS.
Round 4 delivered the most competitive weekend of Holmesglen Under 19 Premier action this season, as three games were decided by less than two goals. All those three games had the eventual victors trailing at either the first, second or third break: in a message to the competition that four-quarter efforts are a must in this league.
The CY’s showed competitiveness in the first quarter, remaining two goals in touch of the in-form SKOB, but were quickly blast away in the second term, with St Kevin’s tallying six goals to one to lead by 45 points.
One of those encounters was Old Xaverians’ 11-point triumph over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, with an accurate goalkicking display the factor behind the enthralling comeback victory.
Williamstown came out of the sheds with fight, matching it to their opposition for most of the third term, only allowing the margin to increase by another eight points, but the fourth quarter is where SKOB found their groove again defensively. The CY’s managed just two points in the final term, with St Kevin’s running out 69-point winners.
The Tigers started the game firing with 37 points to just one goal for Old Xaverians, immediately dialling up the scoreboard pressure. However, Xavs would come close to returning serve, scoring five goals to one in the second quarter to bridge the gap back to a seven-point halftime deficit.
Lucas May top-scored with five goals for St Kevin’s, while Maahi Patel played his part for the CY’s with four majors.
A plucky third term saw the scoring rate decrease, but Old Xaverians managed to continue converting from their minimal opportunities, nailing three straight goals to SBMT’s 1.4, handing the red and black side a slim onepoint advantage heading into the final term.
Caulfield Grammarians have claimed their first win of 2025 against De La Salle, with the encounter going down to the wire.
Xavs nailed the first in the last before SBMT had five consecutive scoring shots, although they were once again only able to nail one of them. Round 1 Anytime Fitness Rising Star Harry Wharfe slotted through a goal to reclaim the lead late, before another goal from the Xavs army in the dying minutes was the sealer for an 11-point victory.
Caulfield Grammarians would relinquish that lead in the third term however, as De La Salle kicked 4.4 to just one goal to claim a seven-point advantage heading into the last quarter.
The game hung in the balance throughout its entirety, with the Fields’ halftime margin of 15 the biggest of the day.
Coach of the Fields Cooper Rule said that his players’ “hunger” was evident, as three goals to one saw Caulfield overcome De La in a physically draining fourth term.
Ted Hansen and Tommy Trist were among Old Xaverians best, while Joshua Robinson kicked a game-high three goals for the Tigers.
“I was just super proud of this group in particular, and our hunger for the footy,” Rule said.
Old Brighton remains undefeated after a comprehensive shutout of Hampton Rovers, limiting the Rovers to just a behind in the second half.
“Our pressure was relentless from start to finish and it was a real full team effort that got us over the line.
The Tonners kicked away to a near 10-goal lead at halftime but kicked into another gear following the main break, with their defenders putting on a clinic to stifle any Rovers attack.
“We ran out of legs in the final 10 minutes but still found a way to win.” That win marks Caulfield’s first after three straight defeats, leaving just Williamstown and Hampton searching for victory in 2025. Harry Appel and Harvey Dawson were the Fields’ best in their win, while Pat Russell and Angus Jackson were admirable for De La.

ROUND 4 RESULTS Round 4 was capped off with a dramatic top of the table clash, with the Uni Blues taking their first defeat to Old Scotch in a nine-point epic. It was yet another come-from-behind classic that has highlighted the competitive nature of this competition, as a remarkable eight-goal final term turned the game on its head. The Blues established an early buffer at quarter-time, restricting the Cardinals to just seven points. That 16-point lead grew to 26 at half-time, leaving a mammoth task for Old Scotch to overcome. The Cardinals began to chip away at the lead in the third term, but University held firm, keeping their lead to a solid buffer of 15 and went into the three-quarter-time huddle brimming with confidence. However, the intensity of the game would only continue to ramp up. Astonishingly, after converting more behinds than goals through three quarters, the Cardinals piled on eight goals straight in the final term. The incredible accuracy suddenly stifled any Uni Blues momentum and turned the game well and truly in Old Scotch’s favour. While the Blues managed to snag four final quarter goals of their own, the attacking fluency of Old Scotch caught their defence off-guard, and goals began to leak at an alarming rate. Unable to stem the bleeding, the Blues relinquished their 26-point halftime buffer to lose by nine points at the final siren, and hand Old Scotch the current top position on the Under 19 Premier’s ladder. Bullants on a streak, whilst Kew and Ormond are yet to drop Round 4 in Division 1 saw the Preston Bullants claim their third consecutive win with an emphatic victory over Therry Penola, whilst Kew and Ormond have continued their unbeaten streak. Pencil in Kew and Ormond’s Round 8 clash as one to watch!
When push came to shove, it was UHS-VU who stood up for the challenge with five goals to one in the final term as they claimed the four points for the first time this season. In a true team effort, the goals were shared around the UHS-VU players with ten individual goal-scorers, whilst Angus Coverdale and Oscar Watt each kicked three for Brunswick.
After a nail-biting final quarter with many swings and roundabouts, Ormond defeated Old Peninsula in a close 12-point contest, in what was the biggest challenge to Kyle Pinto’s men this season to date. Ormond and Old Peninsula have been two of the highest performing sides in this section thus far, so this game was one that was truly up for grabs.
Kew continued their unbeaten run, defeating the struggling Monash Blues by 42 points. Kew had a remarkable first quarter, kicking seven goals to Monash’s four behinds to hold a comfortable buffer leading into the first break.
The Pirates had the dream start, virtually silencing the Ormond crowd in the first quarter as they piled on the pain with six goals to one in the first quarter. A 35-point lead at quarter-time was a massive mental advantage.
To Monash’s credit, they didn’t drop their heads and responded well in the second quarter with more success inside 50, however still had a lot of work to do, trailing by 32 points at the main break.
The Monders were back to their best in the second quarter with goals aplenty to reduce their deficit to just five points at half-time, which could have been an advantage if not for inaccuracy in front of goal. The third quarter was a hard-fought contest with little scoring, and Ormond managed to sneak ahead to take a narrow 1-point lead into the final term.
The Blues were more competitive in the second half, however Kew were just too good at the end of the day, as Monash’s poor first quarter proved to be far too much to come back from. Ryan Meeuw had a big day, kicking three goals for Kew in this match before backing it up with five goals for Kew’s Under 19s side immediately after this game, whilst Michael Batten, Harry Conden and Will Snookes are all to be commended for their efforts for Monash on a tough day for their side.
Ultimately, it was Ormond who managed to stand up in the fourth quarter with late goals to Sam Mason and Mason Thatcher getting the home side over the line. Whilst a loss still hurts, Old Peninsula would leave with their heads held high in that they gave a serious scare to one of the undefeated teams in this section. Bailey Payze was critical for Old Peninsula with nine of their eleven goals.
The Preston Bullants are knocking down the door of the top two ladder positions after a thumping 110-point victory over Therry Penola. The Bullants set the tone early in the first quarter with four goals to one to build up a healthy 19-point lead at quarter-time.
After getting close last week, UHS-VU recorded their first win of 2025 with a 24-point victory over Brunswick. Both sides were well matched in the first quarter, finding opportunities to get the footy inside 50 and convert on the scoreboard.
It was in the second quarter the Bullants began to dominate, virtually silencing Therry Penola, keeping their opposition scoreless whilst they kicked six goals. This trend continued into the third for the Bullants to carry a 72-point lead into the final change.
UHS-VU broke away in the second quarter, kicking five consecutive goals before Brunswick fired back with a couple of their own, to lead by 17-points at the major break. Therry Penola’s Oscar Moran kicked the first goal of the final term to give his side something to smile about, but it was a demolition job from there on-in as Preston piled on another eight majors, charging home to claim those illustrious four points. Benedict Douglas impressed up 28

Both sides have struggled in Division 1 thus far so a win in this DIVISION 1 MEN’S RESERVES game will give them a massive leg-up. UHS-VU: 4.2 Two of this section’s best teams, Kew and Preston will faceoff in what should be a close encounter. Round 4 delivers with thrillers galore Round 4 was arguably the best round of the season to date, with three games being decided by a goal or less.
tighter contest than most would’ve anticipated heading into the round, with the Gryphons inaccuracy keeping Old Haileybury in the contest, as the game went right down to the wire. The Gryphons were off to a strong start, kicking 2.5 in the first and holding Old Haileybury scoreless as it looked like there was a big victory looming already.
Therry Penola bounced back from a tough loss last weekend, defeating Whitefriars by 6 points. Whitefriars led for the majority of the game but were unable to run out victorious. Whitefriars inaccuracy in the last quarter ultimately cost them the game, kicking three behinds to the Lion’s two last quarter goals.
However, Old Haileybury came out firing in the second quarter, kicking 2.3 to the Gryphs singular behind. 10 behinds in the second quarter nearly cost the Gryphs the game as Old Haileybury kicked the only goal of the entire second half.
Eliza German was one of the best with two goals for the Lions, with Abbey Duggan also scoring. Rachel Smith, Jessica Moloney and Bree Whitehead were the best for Whitefriars. The loss leaves Whitefriars in seventh on the ladder with one win, alongside three other teams, whilst the Lions’ win puts them in fourth, just behind Oakleigh on percentage.
Emily Bannon, Shalyn Phillips and Poppy Murdoch were the best for Old Haileybury in what was one of their most competitive games for the season so far. Callie Georgiadis, Eliza Morrison and Grace Bridges were the best for Glen Eira.
Hampton Rovers secured their second win of the season, defeating Richmond Central by 4 points. The victory heavily attributed to their strong second quarter performance, kicking 2.4 whilst Richmond were held scoreless.
Despite the scare, Glen Eira remains undefeated and sit second on the ladder, but they have some ground to make up on percentage if they are to leap up to first place. Old Haileybury hold onto just the four points in sixth on the ladder.
Inaccuracy played a big part in this result, with Richmond having plenty of chances to take the lead. In the third, they kicked five behinds to the Rovers’ one, with the deficit reduced to 10 points. A tight final term, with 2-1 the way of the Snakes, but ultimately the Rovers ran out the better team in a fierce contest.
Monash Blues kept their impressive season rolling, defeating Hawthorn by 67 points on Saturday afternoon. It was a strong four quarter performance from the Blues, both offensively and defensively. The Blues kicked 67 points for the game, including 6.1 in the first quarter, whilst they also managed to keep Hawthorn scoreless for the entire game.
Marissa Bergamin and Ann-Marie Geary were the goal scorers for Richmond, whilst Grace Bonanno, Tayla Jones and Madeline Pearson all had a goal apiece in a low scoring affair. Casey Politarhis, Bryanna Arnold and Hollie Brodribb were best on.
It was a full team effort, with seven different goalkickers for the Blues. However, it was Hannah Konstanty who was the most impressive up forward with three goals, whilst Tiarna Jericho had two. Konstanty has been impressive since coming into the side in Round 2, with a tally of five goals for the season. Emily Conroy and Johannah Dallas were also strong for the Blues.
The Rovers now sit in fifth as they hunt down a third win and a spot in the top four. However, they’ll need to start improving their percentage to move up the ladder. Richmond now sits in ninth, just behind Power House on percentage.
Despite being handed another massive loss, Beth Hamer, Rachel Tan and Imogene Hage Nebyl led the way for the Hawks. The loss now leaves them winless after four rounds and sitting on the bottom of the ladder. Monash sit on top of the ladder, comfortably ahead of Glen Eira on percentage.
The contest between Old Haileybury and Glen Eira/Old McKinnon was perhaps the match of the round, as Glen Eira battled to run away 4-point winners. This was a much

Oakleigh recorded their second consecutive win and third for the season, defeating Power House by 25 points. It was a strong performance, with Power House held scoreless for the entire first half and ultimately registered just eight points for the game. Despite being scoreless, it was a fairly even first half contest with Oakleigh leading by 7 points at the main change. Oakleigh came out firing in the second half, kicking 4.2 in what was a four-quarter performance. Captain Ruby Ford led from the front and was best on ground, her fourth time in the best this season as she looks to take her side to the finals. Sienna Bernardo and Georgie Nancarrow were also impressive.

For Power House, it was a tough week after Round 3’s big win. Joanne Down was their only goal kicker and also their most impressive player. Oakleigh move up to third on the ladder and stand just one win behind Monash and Glen Eira, with an impressive percentage of 284%. Power House sit in eighth, with just the one win recorded.

Unicorns end Saints unbeaten run in thrilling three-point victory Division 2 Men’s is producing some must watch football, in a section that is highly competitive. In the most enthralling match of Round 4, the Unicorns claimed their third consecutive game by a mere 3 points, when the Saints missed a long-range, after the siren shot at goal.
In a thrilling encounter, MHSOB travelled to Ferndale Park and handed St Mary’s Salesian their first loss of the season, with just three points separating the two teams at the final siren. Melbourne High came out guns blazing and delivered a showstopping result to claim a major scalp early in the season in Div 2 Men’s.
Whitefriars got their revenge against South Melbourne Districts, who knocked them out of the finals last season, with a 50-point win over the Bloods at home over the weekend.
The Unicorns kicked the first goal of the match before the Saints hit back with three consecutive majors to take a ninepoint lead at quarter time. MHSOB struggled to convert in the second (3.6 to the Saints’ 2.1) but had their noses in front by two points at half time.
After trailing by five points at quarter time, the Friars kicked the first five goals of the second quarter to establish a 26-point lead before conceding two goals just prior to the half as the Bloods cut their lead to seven points.
Trent Ryan put the home side back in front with a straight kick shortly after play resumed, but it was the Saints’ who failed to take advantage of their scoring opportunities for the remainder of the quarter, registering six behinds while the Unicorns went on a four-goal run to end the quarter.
A Tim Angus goal in the dying stages of the third quarter gave Whitefriars a 16-point advantage going into the final break. The home side ultimately proved too strong for the winless South Melbourne thanks to a final quarter blitz where they put on seven goals to one.
St Mary’s fell agonisingly short of completing the come-frombehind victory despite kicking four goals to two in the last. The Saints could have stolen the win with a shot at goal after the siren from outside 50, but the kick fell short.
Friars coach Lucas Matthews was pleased with his team’s performance, especially their effort and structure. Matthews also praised Noah Sealey and James Perrin, with the pair proving to be a dangerous combination in the forward half for the Friars. Sealey and Perrin kicked nine goals between them, including five in the fourth quarter.
Unicorns’ coach Bernie Pretty liked the consistent effort displayed by MHSOB throughout the match but highlighted the need for better execution and decision-making with ball in hand. “That’s part and parcel of having quite a few young players who are still learning to make more mature decisions with the footy at the right times. There were times where the ball movement was really good, so it’s about trying to increase the percentage of times we get it right.”
Old Yarra Cobras continued their strong start to the season, defeating St John’s by 40 points at Koonung Reserve. The top-of-the-table Cobras dominated the first quarter with 11 scoring shots to two, but poor kicking limited their lead to just 24 points at quarter time. A four goal second quarter saw Old Yarra extend their lead to 33 points at the main break.
Saints coach Clay Tait conceded his team were overpowered at stoppages, meaning most of their attacking thrusts started from within their defensive 50.
The JOC’s kicked the last two of the third to get within 22 points at three quarter time, but the Cobras controlled play in the fourth and kicked five consecutive goals to extend their lead to 52 points midway through the final quarter, sealing the victory.
“We ended up kicking long down the line too often, which is what we want to avoid at all costs, and that’s pretty much all we did in the first half. It played right into their hands,” Tait said.
Old Yarra Cobras coach Nathan Monaco felt his team didn’t play their best footy – describing the game as more of a grind – but was glad to bank another win early in the season.
Tait highlighted the effort of fullback Angus Molden, who took several intercept marks and kept dangerous Unicorn Matthew Pereira goalless.
The efforts from Cobras forward Jack Hall didn’t go unnoticed, booting four goals and bringing multiple balls to the ground despite going up against multiple defenders in the contest.
West Brunswick bounced back from last week’s two-goal loss to MHSOB with a resounding 128-point win over Aquinas at JW Manson Reserve.
“I like it when forwards fight and show a bit of grit, do the things that make things easier for the other forwards around them, and rewarding their mids for their good work by finishing off well,” Monaco said.
The Magpies controlled the game from start to finish, kicking 11 goals to three in the first half to lead by 47 points at half time. But the third quarter was one to forget for the Bloods, with West Brunswick piling on 11.3 to 0.1 to snuff out any chance of a comeback for the home side.

ROUND 4 RESULTS West Brunswick coach Regan Tait said his key message on the day was about not becoming complacent or arrogant, regardless of what the scoreboard showed. “We also went back to basics after last weekend’s game, where we were making simple skill errors,” Tait said. Tait acknowledged the efforts from Aquinas, saying the opposition kept bringing the fight despite the pain being inflicted on the scoreboard. “We were on the receiving end of a couple of losses like this last season, it’s not easy. But they kept bringing it to us every minute of the game and didn’t drop their heads. They were frustrated, which is understandable, but they didn’t give up – big respect for that team” Tait said. There is something to be said for ‘home ground advantage’ as Canterbury, playing at home for the first time this year, registered their first victory of the season with a hard-fought 10-point win over Hawthorn. The Cobras burst out of the blocks after unfurling last season’s Premiership flag, kicking eight goals to two in the first quarter to take a 35-point lead into quarter time. Hawthorn responded strongly after the half-time break with a seven goal to two third quarter, cutting the lead to a solitary point ahead of the final break. Canterbury rose to the occasion, however, kicking the first three goals of the fourth to take a 19-point lead before doing enough to hold on for the victory. Cobras coach Steve Brown described his team’s response to being challenged late in the game as “outstanding”. “We could have easily stopped or given up, but we didn’t. You need to be brave with the footy, even if you’re losing or you’ve made a couple of mistakes.” Brown praised Fraiser Richards for his performance as an onballer in the final quarter, willing himself to contest after contest, and Jackson Smith, and under-19’s player, whose eight-goal haul has seen him shoot to the top of the goalkicking table. Round 5 sees Whitefriars host Old Yarra Cobras in what should be a mouthwatering contest between the two remaining undefeated teams, while West Brunswick welcomes Canterbury to Ransford Oval. St John’s face off against MHSOB, who have won three on the trot, St Mary’s will look to bounce back after their loss to the Unicorns against bottom-of-the-ladder Aquinas, and South Melbourne will chase their first win of the season when they travel to Rathmines Road Reserve to play Hawthorn.

Demons deliver defining victory Round 4 delivered another enthralling weekend of footy. Box Hill North took a major scalp, defeating the top of the table La Trobe and handing them their first loss of the season. Whilst Old Carey star forward Amy McCormack booted six goals to steer her side to victory.
MCC battled on well after being jumped in the second quarter and managed to keep themselves within touching distance for the majority of the contest. Oliver Platt’s side travels to Elgar Park next week to take on a Box Hill North outfit full of confidence. De La Salle shot to the top of the Division 2 ladder, after a 17-point win against Aquinas made it four in a row. Coach Andrew Donnison was especially pleased with the scoreboard reward that his side’s constant forward 50 entries were able to generate.
The match of the round came for Box Hill North, who managed to keep undefeated ladder leaders La Trobe University goalless for the entire contest. Competing hard for four quarters, Box Hill North showed true grit and came away with a hard-fought victory.
Donnison admitted that they were able to take advantage of a strong performance from their midfield group, who were hard at it all morning. De La Salle went into the game expecting a gruelling contest, which is exactly what they were greeted with. “Credit to Aquinas, they came at us hard all day, and particularly in that last quarter – their attack on the ball was ferocious,” Donnison explained.
Box Hill North coach Steve Jackson believes the game was won in the contest, full of praise for his side’s courageous effort around the ball. The floodgates well and truly opened for the Demons in the final term, as they booted three majors and charged home in style. A two-goal haul for both Lilly Griffiths and Aoife Nic a Bhaird helped put on the scoreboard pressure and keep La Trobe busy. An unlucky day for the Trobers and one they will be looking to forget. However, La Trobe coach Samantha Greene won’t be losing too much sleep over the loss; still bullish about her side’s start to 2025.
An admirable finish to the game from Aquinas will be the main positive to take out of proceedings. However, the Ringwood-based club still remains winless, still searching for their first win in Division 2. Old Carey piled on the points against Brunswick to run out 44-point victors. Amy McCormack recorded the individual performance of the round, kicking six goals for the Panthers. An amazing achievement for her side and one she should be extremely proud of. The win pushes Old Carey up to second on the ladder and leaves them in good stead heading into Round 5 with a healthy percentage of 301%.
UHS-VU put on a commanding performance out at Beaumaris Secondary College to down MCC FC by 33 points. A rapid-fire start to the second quarter, kicking three goals in three minutes of play, set the game up for UHS-VU. UHS Coach Alex Henry understands how hard it is to win away from home in this division and will be rapt with his side’s dominant display on the road. ViceCaptain Abbey Mills was influential on the day, booting two goals and leading her side around the ground superbly.

Brunswick coach Sasha Dougherty was happy with her side’s finish to the game but admits Old Carey was just a little too strong. “Old Carey has some very strong forwards, and I think we may have lost in accuracy, whilst also in the little 1% inputs that keep the game in your favour.” With plenty to work on during the week, Brunswick will have to bring their best footy as they 36

look to climb the ladder and make a statement in the Division 2 Women’s competition. Parkside made it two away wins in a row as they handed Wattle Park their fourth consecutive loss to start the season. Wattle Park managed to lead the contest at quarter time, playing a competitive brand of footy that kept them in it. The Devils were able to gain control in the second and third quarters, kicking six goals to two, running out 27-point victors. Martina Zeevaarder was instrumental for Parkside, kicking two goals and helping her side record another away victory. The Animals will be frustrated with how they have started the year but should be proud of their efforts considering the unfortunate nature of having less than eighteen players most weeks. With the season still young, there will be ample opportunity to sink their teeth into the competition and get some wins on the board. That wraps up the action from Round 4. It was a thrilling week with many more quality passages of football on display. With regrading underway, Round 5 is still taking shape, with further details to come.

Falcons soar to first win While Swinburne did find themselves on the losing end, coach Johnny Andrinopoulos was pleased with the way his team played, especially after quarter time considering that two of his players succumbed to injuries during the second term.
Round 4 in the Men’s Division 3 competition has provided another superb round as teams start to show where they sit amongst the rest of the competition. Power House received their first real test for the season against Box Hill North, but the ladder leaders rallied to win away from home by 33 points.
Wattle Park remains undefeated with a notable win against Richmond Central at their home ground by 14 points. Once again, the Snakes got out to a slow start in the first quarter and were chasing Wattle Park’s lead throughout the game. But they found their way back into it as they would take the lead halfway through the fourth quarter.
In unfamiliar conditions for this season, Power House found themselves trailing by 20 points at quarter time despite having an equal number of shots on goal. With injuries to key players in Matt Auchettl and Luke Stubbs in the first quarter alongside the eight outs for Power House coming into the match, the Demons’ chances of an upset were rising.
But with the wider ground at Kevin Bartlett Reserve, the Animals were simply able to move the ball out wide and outrun the Snakes and would kick the last two goals to seal their undefeated status for another week.
However, coach Nick Cox was pleased by his team’s ability to create uncontested possessions, to then get the ball on the outside and outrun Box Hill North through the likes of Gerard Stack and Mitch Newman.
Richmond Central coach Michael Motta would say as much, believing his side “ran out of petrol tickets and gassed to go on with (them)” in the final stages of the game, which saw them concede late.
This would ultimately prove to be the difference for Power House as they wore down the Demons’ pressure and converted their chances to claw back the lead and charge home to another victory.
For Wattle Park, coach Glenn Hopkins was particularly impressed by his team’s effort and ability to pressure for all four quarters. This game has provided further validation of the focus that his side has placed on maintaining possession and creating more uncontested possessions.
While Box Hill North may sit 7th on the ladder with a 1-3 record, they have faced strong competition at the start of their season, having to play the three finalists that stayed in Division 3 from last year, but have been competitive throughout.
La Trobe University delivered a comfortable 160-point victory against Eley Park. It was a statement performance from the Trobers, considering that they had lost the previous week by 78 points; bouncing back to assert themselves back in the competition.
And with strong performances across the entire 2,2, particularly from the goal-kicking duo of Blake Williams and Josh Alderson in the forward line, don’t be surprised if they bolt up the ladder in the not-so-distant future.
In a game like this for La Trobe, there are often many stand-out performers, but it was Indy Williamson who really impressed, kicking nine goals for his side.
Albert Park has achieved their first win for the season with a 12-point win against Swinburne University.
Speaking on his performance, coach Andy Castles was impressed by his ability to win one-on-one contests which gave him multiple chances on goal. But Castles was most impressed by his team’s ability to spread the goal kicking, with 11 different goal kickers contributing to the team total of 29 goals.
The Falcons got out to a solid start, kicking the first five goals of the match, which proved to be an unassailable lead for the match. While it had been a long-awaited result for the Falcons, coach Jack Aimes feels that his side has much to improve on after their win.
For the Sharks, they did show some signs of improvement with their performance in the third quarter as they managed to score the majority of their points in that period. But, it was another case for Eley Park needing to be more consistent throughout the entire four quarters to ensure that they are competitive.
In particular, a focus on being more disciplined and improving their accuracy in front of goal was one of the key takeaways to work on for next week and beyond.

After surviving a late scare last week, North Brunswick has responded with a 117-point win against Chadstone. Despite the blowout result, the Synners recovered from a poor start in the first quarter to go into quarter time only down by 11 points. But that’s about as good as it got for Chadstone as the Bulls proceeded to score 115 points in the next three quarters and held the Synners to just nine points. Chadstone coach Ian Ledder had hoped for a better performance but was pleased that his team was able to play good football in small segments, he just wants to see it over a longer period. On a more positive note, for the Synners, Jarryd Schelling was once again listed as one of the best on grounds for Chadstone, becoming the only player in the division to have done so for four consecutive matches. And what makes it even more impressive is that he’s done it in his first four games of Australian Rules Football, showing how well he has adapted to the sport. From the Bulls’ point of view, this game was a reminder that when their game plan comes together, they become nearly unbeatable regardless of the skill level of their opposition. The clash between Power House and Richmond Central will headline Round 5 when they go head-to-head at Kevin Bartlett Reserve. Wattle Park will return home to face Chadstone, looking to maintain their undefeated start to the season. Albert Park is hoping to continue their winning ways when they face La Trobe University. Box Hill North plays Eley Park in a local derby with the Demons hoping to boost their percentage while the Sharks are looking to be more competitive. Swinburne will come up against North Brunswick at Allard Park to close out the round.

Top 5 teams continue dominance Round 4 of the VAFA Division 3 Women’s competition saw the ladder leaders continue their reign, as the top five teams solidified their positions in what’s shaping up to be an ultra-competitive 2025 season. With key performances across the board, this week’s action provided a mix of clinical wins, gritty battles, and a long-awaited breakthrough victory.
With this result, St Mary’s remain in third spot, keeping the pressure on second-placed Old Camberwell and showing signs that they could be serious challengers for top billing in the coming weeks. Albert Park, meanwhile, showed promise but will need to find greater scoring consistency to match it with the league’s elite. South Melbourne Districts claimed their second win of the season in a crucial 19-point triumph over Elsternwick, staking their claim for a top-four spot. It was a slow burn of a contest, with both sides unable to register a goal in the first half as defences held strong. However, South Melbourne came to life in the third quarter, piling on three unanswered goals to swing the momentum firmly in their favour.
Ormond’s perfect start to the 2025 campaign continued on the weekend, with a convincing 35-point win over Mazenod. From the opening bounce, Ormond set the tone with their trademark pressure and clean ball movement, registering four goals to one in the first half to take a commanding lead into the main break. Charlotte Fisher starred up forward with a standout three-goal performance, showcasing her strong marking and composure around goal. Indiana Harrison and Courtney Gaze-Pearson also hit the scoreboard, adding to the Ormond attack that has been a constant threat this season.
The performance marked a step forward in execution and composure for the Swans, whose ability to seize control in the second half bodes well for the remainder of their campaign. They now sit fifth, equal on points with Mazenod but trailing slightly on percentage—a gap they’ll be eager to close.
Mazenod battled valiantly throughout the match but were ultimately outclassed by the competition leaders. Old Camberwell continued their strong start to the year with a determined 22-point win over a plucky Canterbury outfit. The first half was evenly contested, with both teams registering two goals apiece, but it was Old Camberwell’s fourth-quarter push that sealed the result.
St Mary’s Salesian also preserved their unbeaten status with a solid 21-point victory over Albert Park. The game was won in the second quarter, where St Mary’s broke the contest open with four goals and four behinds, while restricting Albert Park to a single major across the first half.
Led by a spread of contributors up forward, including Millie Culliver, Jess Humphries, Silia Thanopoulous, Bridget Facey, and Rebecca Bellpieri, Old Camberwell’s depth and structure once again shone through. North Brunswick roared to life with a statement 82-point win over Prahran, securing their first victory of the season in emphatic fashion. From the first siren to the final whistle, North Brunswick controlled the tempo, denied scoring opportunities to their opponents, and played with freedom and flair. Lauren Balcombe was the standout of the day, kicking four goals and providing a key focal point up forward. Holly Booth, Madeline Woosley and Ruby-Rose Gibson Haywood each added two goals, while Olivia Peake chimed in with one to cap off a dominant team effort. The Bulls’ defensive unit also deserves credit, keeping Prahran scoreless for the entire match—a feat rarely seen in the competition. With the win, North Brunswick leapfrogged into sixth place and are now just one game outside the top four. Prahran, meanwhile, dropped to eighth and will be looking for answers after a disappointing outing. As we approach the midpoint of the season, the top five teams have started to create a noticeable gap between themselves and the chasing pack. With several sides still capable of shaking up the ladder, every game from here takes on extra significance. Top teams extend streaks as Fitzroy claim crucial win This upset victory over Port Melbourne came at a vital time for Fitzroy who even the ledger at 2 wins and 2 losses for the season to date.
Round 4 of the Division 4 Women’s competition saw Beaumaris and Westbourne each go a game clear of the rest of the pack on the ladder, riding high after being four and zip.
Despite having two more scoring shots, Port Melbourne were left to rue their inaccuracy at the sticks as demonstrated by their 10 behinds. Fitzroy’s TheaWilkinson Shore, Madison Carter, Cleo Bigwood, Evie Deasey and Annabelle Davey ensured Port Melbourne were kept at arm’s length throughout the final term. Fitzroy’s captain Kristen Peake was again inspirational in the victory kicking a much-needed goal when Port Melbourne competed hard in the second half.
Westbourne Grammarians simply outclassed Oakleigh on Saturday morning at Scammel Reserve boasting a 101-point victory. Whilst the points piled on were all class from Westbourne, what was even more impressive was their defensive structure and ability to keep Oakleigh scoreless throughout the match. The win was characterised by exhilarating connection across the ground and forwards who sought to fill their boots after their Round 3 match was decided by forfeit. Westbourne’s victory was typified by a great spread of goal-kickers with Isabelle Choate continuing her impressive season booting 3 majors in the win. Georgia D’Amico, Caitlyn Gashi, Karla Templeton and Chloe Weston-Sirett all hit the scoreboard twice, with Charlotte Chow and Nicky Porter chiming in with a goal each.
The 8-point loss certainly didn’t deter the fighting spirit within Port Melbourne as Tanisha Clark, Claire Peters, Maia Sublet, Jemima Ross and Nikki Wallace performed admirably in the loss. All tied up on 4 points coming into Round 4, the St Kevin’s and Preston Bullants fixture still promised to deliver a highly skilled game at the behest of their supporters. However, the first quarter delivered more of a contested game than both teams would have desired, as the game was largely played between the arcs.
Oakleigh coach Gavin Kenny noted their struggle to compete was underpinned by an amounting injury toll, leaving Oakleigh with 14 fit players at the final siren. “Despite the challenges, the young team fought it out to the end and showed a lot of character” Kenny said, namely the efforts of Olivia Rossato, Tenzin Cohen and Brianna Boyce. Undoubtedly, these efforts demonstrate there is light at the end of the tunnel for the misfiring Oakleigh with just the one win to speak of.
At the quarter time break, Preston took a narrow 2-point advantage. Preston opened the goal scoring in the 2nd term at the 4th minute mark which was quickly responded by St Kevin’s Molly McLean to cut the margin back to 3 points at half time. Preston coach Trevor Robinson conceded, “the game was mainly played in our half, but we couldn’t score as St Kevin’s pushed numbers back to defend desperately.” However, the game was broken open in the third term, through Preston’s greater forward pressure and a terrific goal from Sadie Gray boundary-side.
JL Murphy Reserve played host to the match of the round between the Port Melbourne Chargers and Fitzroy. Port Melbourne, fresh off their 4 goal away win against Monash Blues, knew they were to be challenged by 5th placed Fitzroy. The two similarly placed teams played out an exciting contest, with Fitzroy clinging on to an 8-point margin that proved enough at the final siren, defeating the Chargers 7.6 (48) – 5.10 (40).

Preston had shut the door on St Kevin’s early in the final quarter when Hollie Thompson’s 3rd goal for the day sailed through. Thompson continues her impressive goal-kicking form making that 6 for the year. Ultimately, the consistent forward pressure to lock the ball into Preston’s forward half proved decisive for what was otherwise a close contest. The Bullants ran out 46

The matchup between Old Xaverians and West Brunswick set for Basil Reserve was over before it even started. West Brunswick were handed the points in another unfortunate Old Xavierians forfeit. In another one-sided affair in Div 4 Women’s, the high-flying Beaumaris were dominant again on Saturday afternoon at Banksia Reserve, handing out a 75-point drubbing of Monash Blues. Beaumaris’ six scoring shots to Monash’s 0 in the opening term, foreshadowed a big day out for the Sharks’ forwards. The under-siege Monash backline did well to keep Beaumaris goal-less for the first quarter. However, Beaumaris broke the shackles in the second term, booting 3.5 to lead by 29 at the main change. Leading the Division 4 goal-kicking, Isabella Allan delivered another 5-goal haul to pile on the pain for Monash. Allan’s season tally stands at 12 goals from 3 games, an invaluable 4 goal average. The Monash challenge was never really that potent as Beaumaris booted another 4 goals to extend the margin to 55 points at three quarter time. Bridget Scott, Amy Pearce, Tess Cahill and Maya Buhl were all pivotal in the 75-point win for Beaumaris. It will take a lot of stopping to curtail the impact of these women in future fixtures, as Beaumaris finish Round 4 sitting pretty at the top of the Division 4 ladder. One of the founding members of the Ajax Sunday team, Yehuda Gottleib, will run out for his 100th game this weekend. This achievement is a testament to his dedication and longevity in the sport, defying age expectations at 41, and inspiring his teammates. A personal goal he was able to tick off last year was when Huda had the opportunity to play alongside his son, marking a historic first for the team and club. As a player, Huda is a nuggety in and under midfielder who gets so much of his footy as a hardball and has been an unreal teammate and player over his career. Congratulations on an incredible milestone!

If you ask anyone at the club about Catta, they will say he does it “his way’. He’s unique in his preparation & unique in his training but knows what’s needed to get the best out of himself. Catta turns up & rucks all day without a break & never complains, leads from the front & throws himself into everything, giving his all. After returning to the club after 1 year off, he has slotted back in seamlessly. A BOG performance on the weekend just goes to show how important Catta is to this team & club.
