Publisher's Note Well, the barber shop was crowded, when a little girl appeared, she said oh father dear, don’t let our barber shave your beard. It will fill our hearts with sadness; it will fill our home with gloom, for barber dear, we need his beard for sweeping out the rooms. Growing up, my father was always singing a tune. Sometimes with a guitar in hand and just as often acapella. The lyrics above are a perfect example of the little excerpts from some old folk song that would be belted out to get a laugh. I can’t for the life of me figure out where they originated or if he made them up himself. His memory doesn’t serve him well enough to remember these days, but he remembers the O W N E R & C E O Ian Griffin words and the tunes to so many songs and still loves to sing. In fact, on an unexpected visit to see my ailing grandmother, he belted out a full-on version of Dixie while walking down the hall of her assisted living facility. I’m sure a few of the residents were wondering why a concert abruptly started in the hall, but nobody came out to complain. We had just celebrated my last living grandmother's 100th birthday in July and got the news she was battling cancer over the Thanksgiving holiday. So, I packed up my mom and dad and made the trip to Wildwood, Florida to pay her a visit. We blazed our trip down I-75 quite literally, with a near gas station fire averted and a lot of stressful moments during other pit stops, but we made it to and from without any major mishaps. The visit with the matriarch of my mom's side of the family was worth the stress. Her positive outlook despite her symptoms was simply inspirational. She can only see and hear if you are right next to her, but we talked about family, the sad state of Florida football and shared old stories, mostly about what a pain in the butt I could be when I was a kid. She talked about her health but insisted to all of us that this was our Christmas visit and we should focus on that, so we did. It was emotional, but I wouldn’t change anything other than the brevity of the visit. Life is busy and rarely slows down unless something forces your foot to apply the brakes. But there is time for joy and happiness if you create it. That hit me when my father belted out “Dixie” out of the ether. My cousin and I just shook our heads and laughed as he continued into the second stanza, but the smile on his face was pure joy, and I wasn’t going to interrupt that for anything. On the way home, as my mother was napping, my father and I were singing along to Christmas music and reached over to turn it down so we could harmonize on his greatest hits list from my childhood. From Sloop John B, to Folsom Prison Blues and the Barber Shop was crowded to Stewball. We harmonized, talked and laughed about the soundtrack of our home growing up. It was only about 30 minutes of the trip home, but it fueled me the rest of the way home and beyond. This trip wasn't planned, it wasn’t for a happy purpose, but sometimes those scenarios make for the most powerful memories. Whether your holiday season is stressful, relaxed or a mixture of the two, I hope you find a few of those moments with your loved ones in the coming weeks and days. Most of the porches include tongue and groove ceilings, and the upper level includes a reinforced railing for the extra safety of any children or smaller pets. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the home also offers practicality. The kitchen contains the best of modern appliances, along with granite countertops with ample space for cooking.

New cabinetry has been added to the kitchen, and paired with its walk-in pantry, there is no shortage of storage. This notably extends to the rest of the house, as well. Should you happen to bump into certain walls, though, you might be surprised to find a variety of hidden storage spaces. These are located in various locations of the house, including the in-law suite. A shift from the hustle-and-bustle of the main floor, the upper level consists of several smaller spaces that allow more privacy. On the upper level of the house are an additional two bedrooms, both with ensuite bathroom and a small side room that can function as an office, a reading nook, or simply an extra storage space. This floor also has a space at the end of the hall that overlooks the living room of the main floor. Moving to the lower level of the house, this floor is curated for entertaining—or just for a great night in. The lower level takes on a mixture of vintage and rustic styles that lend it a unique vibrancy. Since they moved in, the owners have revamped this entire floor with custom

woodwork. It has now become the ideal place to host or to unwind with the family. Just to the left of the stairs is an in-home theater with two raised platforms. In addition to the previous renovations, a surround sound system, a sono bar, and a new TV have all been added to this room. Across the hall is a study, which is designed with a more rustic look in mind with an exposed brick wall. And past both of these rooms is an open concept room for a bar and billiard room. Lining the walls of this room are custom wainscoting constructed by James Culpepper. It is created in an antique style that ties together the vintage aesthetic of the room. Its accompanying bar is entirely customdesigned with an overhead canopy, a wooden counter, and a granite countertop for the cabinetry.

The most notable addition to the basement, though, is the wine cellar. It currently holds 600 bottles and has a chiller unit installed. Adjacent to the bar and billiards is a spacious recreation room with a large fireplace. A wonderful spot for entertaining and hosting. Further down there is also an exercise room and a storm cellar. Accompanying the house itself are several outdoor amenities designed for both leisure and added utility. In the front yard is a fencedin orchard with various fruit trees, along with blueberry and raspberry bushes. Tucked away in the backyard is a bocce ball court with an accompanying sitting area and a pizza oven. A blue stone walkway and stone staircase lead to the lower portion of the yard, where prospective owners will find a fenced-in

greenhouse garden complete with an elegant wrought-iron gate. On the opposite side of the yard is also a chicken coop with convenient interior and exterior fans. While each of them has been hand-crafted and designed with the ease of the owner in mind, the coop is the most notable of these. It contains both the standard raised beds in a smaller interior portion and a fenced-in portion overlooking the river. Both of these are built so that the chickens can pass from one to the other with ease. The owner will also have easy access to the chickens on both sides, particularly the raised beds: they are constructed with small doors, similar to cabinets, to minimize stress when collecting eggs. This same area also contains large cabinets under the raised beds for easy storage. When it comes to 525 North River Road, there is much to offer and explore. theatre is the home of the stars. Amidst the blank canvas of the stage, there is an ever-present air of possibility—a star ready to burst into life. And at the Jewel of Broad Street, they will be shining brighter than ever this Christmas. Lighting up The Desoto stage this season is Christmas in Killarney! The story of an Irish woman and her American boyfriend celebrating Christmas “the ‘Irish’ way,” Christmas in Killarney is a soul-stirring, high-leaping, Rockin-Around-the-Christmas-Tree jamboree. “Created by the 2009 World Champion of Irish Dance Scott Doherty and worldwide touring Irish musician Chris Smith, Christmas In Killarney combines the excitement of Irish dance with the harmonies of traditional Christmas classics.”

With a group of talented minds behind it, Christmas in Killarney promises to be the show of the season: “The creative team includes Broadway Director Jeff Whiting, Emmy award-winning Set Designer Jason Ardizzone-West, Arranger Gary Lensenmayer, Costume Designer Sarah Cubbage and New Yorkbased Light Designer Aaron Porter.” Christmas in Killarney is making a one-night stop to The Desoto on their tour around the United States on December 16th. For one night only, Romans will get to watch these stars take the stage. The opportunity to host a Broadway-level show is one that the Historic Desoto Theatre Foundation has been working towards for many years.

O.C. Lam first sought to bring the stars to Rome in the 1920s—the era of the silver screen. With the newly-revolutionized talkie films sweeping the States, he leapt at the opportunity to create the first talkie theater of the South. He called it The Desoto: a sprawling, artdeco-style palace among the likes of the New York Roxy. Since its establishment in 1929, The Desoto has been a haven for artistic innovation, a testament to the creativity of O.C. Lam and his fellow Romans. The Rome Little Theatre troupe purchased The Desoto in 1982 and added its current stage. It was later sold to the Historic Desoto Theatre Foundation, who have built upon the visions of both Lam and the RLT troupe to create a space for all performing arts.

Under their care, The Desoto has not only been revived but revitalized. They have invested over a million dollars in improving The Desoto on both practical and aesthetic fronts. They’ve assured the longevity of the space by building new retaining walls, replacing decaying wood, and conducting an electrical overhaul (note from Michelle Picon: “not an easy task in a plaster building!”). Beyond construction, they’ve also revamped The Desoto’s original style, bringing back the glamorous Art Deco decor. Their efforts have made The Desoto a place to remember, and one where they are proud to preserve Rome’s history and celebrate its progression with productions like Christmas in Killarney. The Desoto’s Development Director Michelle Picon says, “We are small

and our facilities and technology are limited, but the improvements that we have made in recent years allowed us to bring this elaborate production.” They haven’t made this journey alone, though: the Rome Little Theatre troupe, Seven Hills Fellowship, and the Rome International Film Festival have all helped bring The Desoto into the modern day through investments and performances. The HDTF embraces Rome’s sense of community wholeheartedly, with the help of their collaborators and sponsors. According to Michal Zelenak, the Plant Controller of Kerry’s Rome

division, “70% of the food you eat, in some form, has ingredients that come from Kerry.” Kerry produces ingredients for a multitude of food companies, spanning from Lays’s and Gatorade’s flavors and nutritions to McDonald’s coatings and breadcrumbs. Among 150 manufacturing facilities, Kerry’s Rome division is one of their largest. “Every single day, Kerry in Rome produces 1.5 million pounds of product,” says Michal. Kerry’s home base is in County Kerry, Ireland. Naturally, their Rome division was “a great partner for our "Irish Christmas Celebration" musical,” says Michelle Picon.
