I am excited to be sending you the fourth edition of SVM Alumni Class Notes. So many of you have shared how much you enjoy hearing about your classmates and other University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) alumni. Thank you to all who took the time to send in your news!

I hope to see many of you at our events throughout the year. It was nice to visit with SVM alumni at the recent Western Veterinary Conference (WVC), and we’ll again be at the annual conventions for the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), and North American Veterinary Community (NAVC). We are excited to have the alumni reunion on June 24, featuring the classes of 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012. Also, the date is to be determined, but we’ll again host a tailgate and continuing education event at the school in fall 2017. I started my own solo equine ambulatory practice — “Monarch Veterinary Service” — in September 2016. My website is only in its starting phase, but you can learn more at www.MonarchEqVet.com.
In Memoriam Mark W. Jackson DVM’87
died peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016. He was a practicing clinician who specialized in small animal internal medicine and was previously a faculty member at the University of Bristol, North Carolina State University, and the University of Glasgow. Mark went into general practice immediately after graduating from the SVM and returned two years later to complete an internal medicine residency. He also earned a doctorate in human clinical nutrition from UW-Madison.
There’s a doc in town making house calls. She drives up to people’s homes in a totally self-contained veterinary clinic on wheels.
Patti Klein
Started in 2015, Pet Care In Motion mobile veterinary services is the brainchild of Dr. Patti Klein. Klein was a partner at Hartland Veterinary clinic 1988-2003 and an employee at Woodstock Veterinary Clinic 2003-2014. She brings more than 25 years of experience working with small animals to her new practice in Woodstock, Ill. Her practice is currently the only one of its kind in McHenry County. Services include in-home euthanasia, wellness, surgery, dentistry, and new in 2017, ultrasonography. The service is very popular with animal rescue groups for spay and neuters. The animals are transported only a few feet from the shelter door and returned when they have recovered from anesthesia. House calls greatly reduce stress for feline patients. Most cats are very comfortable in the mobile unit, and it is designed to be cat friendly. For more information visit www.petcareinmotion.com.
Jean Sander
After a long and enjoyable career in higher education, I decided to return to my roots and have taken a position as a senior technical services veterinarian for poultry at Zoetis. This allowed me to relocate to Raleigh, N.C.
According to the wishes of Mark’s family, the SVM has established The Mark Jackson Memorial Fund to support travel and other scholarships in memory of his love of teaching. Gifts can be made online at go.wisc.edu/jackson-memorial-fund.
Winifred M. Morenz DVM’88
passed away surrounded by her loving family on Jan. 23, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer. She founded Park Place Veterinary Hospital in North Swanzey, N.H., in 1990, which she grew to employ four veterinarians and a staff of 15 people. She leaves behind two daughters, one son, and a beloved husband.
My husband Allen and I are very happy with this change and hope to retire here after several more years of working in the field of veterinary medicine.

I moved to La Selva Beach, Calif., in February 2016. I’m still enjoying working for Elanco Animal Health and working with dairy producers in the western U.S. In the last few years I have had the opportunity to visit dairy farms in China, Turkey, Romania, Ukraine, Scotland, and New Zealand.

This year, I was promoted to Executive Director, Office of Animal Care, at MPI Research in Mattawan, Mich. I am responsible for veterinary care, husbandry, and animal welfare for animals that contribute to improving the health of humans and animals throughout the world. My wife Shelli and I volunteer for the SPCA of Southwest Michigan and promote rehoming of research animals through Homes for Animal Heroes. 4
The Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association honored me with the 2015 Distinguished Service Award.
Greetings from Wisconsin! The Class of 1990 graduated over 25 years ago, and we had a lovely 25th class reunion party last summer. It was wonderful to see everyone who was able to attend, and of course, we missed those who were unable to attend. Family vacation at Glacier National Park
As far as my little corner of the world, I have been and continue to be an associate veterinarian at Middleton Veterinary Hospital only a few miles from our illustrious UW VMTH. Kevin is still the Beecham guy that I met at the inaugural Pharmaceutical Fair, but he has transitioned from Beecham to Smithkline Beecham to Pfizer to Zoetis. We have two little kids that somehow became ”big” kids. Emily Rose is a sophomore at UW-La Crosse, majoring in psychology. She works at Schoepp Motors to help finance college. Benjamin is a freshman in high school in Lodi. He played on the JV soccer team this fall and was just hired as a ski instructor at Cascade Mountain. We also have five animals right now, including two dogs (potcakes) rescued from Turks and Caicos and three rescue cats.

I am still at my first job since graduating more than 25 years ago. I am part owner of Kaukauna Veterinary Clinic with Kurt Rossebo DVM’91. We have two other SVM grads at the practice — Pat Laritson DVM’91 and David Gagnon DVM’12. I am still blissfully married to my high school sweetheart, Michele, and we have two children. Kevin is a UW-Madison alumnus and is now attending the University of North Carolina for his masters in athletic training. He has been married to his high school sweetheart, Nikki, for more than three years, and they have blessed us with two grandchildren, Weston and Sophia. Our daughter, Kayla, is an Edgewood alumna with a nursing degree and is employed at the American Family Children’s Hospital on the Oncology/Hematology floor. She is engaged to Connor who is a UW-Madison senior. He wrestles for the Badgers at heavyweight and is currently ranked second in the country. They are tying the knot on June 3.

Here we go again! Our practice, Brook-Falls Veterinary Hospital and Exotic Care, now has graduates from all four decades the Vet School has been open. Ten years ago, Jennifer Bloss DVM’89 and I bought a one-doctor veterinary practice in Brookfield, Wis. Several years later, we added Nicole (Waliszewski) Mueller DVM’06 to our staff, and a little over a year ago we hired April WittenburgPosko DVM’13. We also have two previous employees currently at the SVM — Sarah Lottes DVMx’17 and Stephanie Salituro DVMx’17. We have enjoyed tremendous success; we find the exotics portion (approximately 50%) of the practice to be immensely satisfying and try to pass this knowledge on. We have hosted veterinary students from the SVM and as far away as Scotland for externships. Additionally, this year we were asked to put on a student lab during the state veterinary convention that was focused on exotic techniques and surgeries. We will likely need to hire another grad in the next few years — maybe in 2020?

Surprisingly, it appears that I’ll be a clinician again shortly. It all depends on whether the practice owner will agree with me not going on the emergency The love of my life. rotation and being strictly a small animal veterinarian, but so far it looks promising. I didn’t actually think I’d ever be in private practice again, but the opportunity fell into my lap, and I’ve been looking for a job, so I figured why not. It’s been a weird few years. I spent 26 months in Boston as a consultant doing quality assurance (no animal work at all!). Before then I was a veterinary anesthesiologist for a year in a research lab, and prior to that I was an exotic animal vet for a year. Mostly, I work to support the love of my life, car racing. If I could make money from that, I’d never work on an animal again, but alas, old ladies in hot cars aren’t what the big teams are looking for!

There’s not much news to share here, except that time continues to pass... Mazomanie Animal Hospital is, unbelievably, in its 15th year, having pulled through a difficult economy. My boys are 12 and 7 years old and doing great and so is my husband and practice manager, Ken. I have reached my
maximum limit on cats (four) and dogs (two), having taken in a few of those difficult cases that owners give up on. I just can’t seem to walk away from “I can fix that.” All are healthy now, except the one I actually went out and purchased, of course. This year I am thankful for the AVMA’s focus on human wellness in veterinary medicine, as it was much needed. Understanding the dynamics of compassion fatigue and other stresses has led to more satisfying work for our entire staff.

Since 2002, I have been working as a toxicologic pathologist in the field of drug discovery and development in Madison. In March 2016, I accepted a position as Senior Pathologist at Seventh Wave Laboratories, a contract research organization (CRO) in St. Louis. I am thrilled to have a wonderful new team of colleagues and also thrilled to be able to work remotely from my home near Madison, where I live with my partner, Doug, and my youngest son. Our older kids are all in college. Has it really been 24 years already?

[1994] Chris Olson
After 20 years of practice, I decided to challenge myself physically and mentally. I decided to sign up for Ironman Wisconsin. I had accomplished a few triathlons in the past, a few sprints, an Olympic and a half Ironman on Sept 11, 2010. I had meniscal tear surgery two years ago. I finally started feeling great and thought this is the year, since Ironman Wisconsin was going to be on Sept 11, 2016 — a very symbolic date. My training started in fall 2015 and became very intense with long hours six days a week during the summer. I was blessed to train with a colleague, Sue Roberts, and it was great to chat about cases to take our minds off aching muscles, sore feet, and intense heat and humidity of the day. Ironman is not only very physically challenging but mentally as well. There were many days when I did not know if I was going to have the stamina to finish. But just like in veterinary school, perseverance, hard work and the mindset to say, “I can do this,” paid off. I am Ironman — had a great day and finished the race earlier than anticipated!
Erica Schorr Evans
In 2013, I returned to the Madison area when my husband accepted a faculty position at University of Wisconsin. I completed my certification in veterinary acupuncture through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) in July 2013. Since then, I have been working at Sauk Prairie Small Animal Hospital.
[1995] Erica Carroll
Just a note to share that, after three years of GLP toxicologic pathology, I decided to cram as much as possible into my evenings and weekends and somehow passed the American Board of Toxicology exam. The second day of the exam was during Hurricane Matthew, so my flight home was canceled, but a wonderful FDA scientist offered me a ride with her from Raleigh, N.C. back to the D.C. area. In January 2017, I retired from the Army after 39 years of service (a combination of Navy/Naval Reserves/Illinois Army National Guard/Army Reserves/Active Army). My follow-on career began on January 23 with Covance with a skilled team of veterinary pathologists and investigators with whom I’m excited to work. My spouse of 17 years, Joe, and I, along with Eowyn, our precious yellow lab, are relocating to the Indianapolis area. Looking forward to hearing my classmates’ news and seeing you at future SVM reunions.

Well, boring or not, I’m still The Director of Conservation Medicine at The Wilds in Ohio (since February 2015). And I have an 18-month-old grandson Benjamin Weaver, who is the love of my life!

This past year I was chosen to be the Buffalo County representative for UW-Madison’s “Project 72.” This gave me the opportunity to promote not only the University of Wisconsin–Madison, but also celebrate being an alumna of the School of Veterinary Medicine. You can check it out at allwaysforward.org/feature/buffalo-county. I am also in the process of completing my IVAS acupuncture certification, pending approval of my case study. I completed their mixed animal course in Richmond, Va., in October 2016. It has been a great addition to my practice at the Animal Wellness Center of Buffalo Valley in Mondovi, Wis., where I have also offered veterinary spinal manipulation therapy since 2005. I am enjoying living on the farm I grew up on with my daughter, Emilia (15), and my husband, Ron.
[1997] Lisa (Conway) Schultz
Paul Schultz DVM’97 and I were married in 1997. We have both been at the same practices we started at since graduation and practice small animal medicine. Paul works in Muskego, and I am in Brookfield. Both towns are suburbs just outside of Milwaukee. We have lived in New Berlin since 1999 and currently have a black Lab and two cats.

Colleen Jensen
Seven members of the class of 1998 came from around the country and gathered in Hilton Head, S.C., for a long weekend this past August. We get together every other year in various locations around the country. We reminisced about school, caught up on family news, went on a dolphin watching cruise, played a marathon game of Cards Against Humanity, and exchanged advice about business and patient cases. Despite two of us getting stung by jellyfish, it was a fantastic weekend. The next reunion for our group is planned for summer 2018 in San Diego, Calif.
In our free time, we both enjoy camping, biking, hiking, working out at the gym, skiing, and nature photography. We spend a fair amount of our vacation time traveling around the state and country taking nature photos and currently have some work in a gallery in Oconomowoc vetmed.wisc.edu/svm-alumni-class-notes

Jacob Odders
This year, we expanded the Glendale location of Lakeshore Veterinary Specialists and partnered with PetCure Oncology to add a state-of-the art linear accelerator to our expanded facility. We are now one of only a few facilities in the country that offer Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS). We started treating patients in July, and we’ve had wonderful feedback from our clients, many of whom have mentioned that they appreciate the noninvasive/nonsurgical aspect of the technology. SRS only requires one to three treatment sessions as opposed to conventional radiation therapy’s 1521 sessions. We are excited about how this is changing the face of cancer treatment for pets! Megan Tremelling DVM’99, Carrie Stefaniak DVM’99, and Brian Teunissen DVM‘00 are all owners of Lakeshore and are all excited about our growth.

Since I last updated this group (2013), I moved to Frederick, Md., in 2014 to serve in my next Army tour at Fort Detrick. This is actually my third tour at Fort Detrick and my first in the Office of Research Protections (ORP) with the Animal Care and Use Review Office (ACURO). My title is Executive Officer, which is basically Army-speak for keeping my boss on track! I suppose my life as a lab animal vet is following a typical trajectory, where one “advances” from clinician to program manager to senior administrator. I am one of two uniformed vets in a strictly regulatory position here working with a great team of admins, one other civilian vet, and three protocol review specialists. We provide secondary level review to all Army-funded animal research protocols and we also conduct site visits to see programs in action. This year, I was blessed to see some excellent work going on in Singapore and Thailand. I am grateful to have a job, meet great people, and see some of the world — which is actually a pretty small place! 8

I got married on May 21, 2016. My husband is David Walter, Jr. We are living in the Rhinelander area of Northern Wisconsin. I am currently working as a technical services veterinarian in the Veterinary Services Department at Doctors Foster and Smith.
[2003] Leslie Ahluwalia
After graduating in 2003, my husband and I moved to Indiana for 10 years. I practiced exclusive equine at Hoosier Park and Indiana Downs. After having our two children — Ava (2007) and Shawn (2009) — I started doing some small animal medicine. In 2012, we moved to California. In December 2015, I opened a Jimmy John’s Sandwiches in Livermore Calif., and we just had our one-year anniversary. In March 2016, I was hospitalized with acute renal failure and not only recovered but SVM classmate Dawn Thrall DVM’03 convinced me to do the Tinkerbell Dust Challenge with her in May 2016. Since then, I have completed four more half-marathons all while practicing mixed small animal and equine veterinary medicine in Turlock, Calif.

September 2016 marked the 10th Anniversary for Great Lakes Equine of Hortonville, Wis. My wife, Mary, and I celebrated with a 10-year client wine and cheese reception on Friday, October 7, followed by an open carnival on Saturday, October 8. The carnival was well attended and included an inflatable bounce house and obstacle course, hotdogs, popcorn, cotton candy and music. I am grateful for an awesome staff, great clients, and family and friends that make it all worthwhile.

Since graduation, I became certified as a medical illustrator and was able to successfully have my own freelance business forseveral years. I now live near St. Paul, Minn., with my husband, Tom, and our son, Timmy, born in 2015. Life is awesome as a mom, and I’ve even gotten back into art again. I created a pet portrait for a friend’s new rescue adoption earlier this year, and it has turned into a business of its own, which I love more than I ever would have expected! Rob and I welcomed our second son, Ian, in June 2015. Earlier this year, I moved from a corporately owned clinic back to private practice. I’m happy to be part of Randall Orchard Crossing Animal Hospital in North Aurora, Ill., and look forward to what the future holds!

My husband, Sean, and I welcomed our second son, Jameson William (born on Nov. 11, 2016), through adoption. He joins his very proud big brother, Averson.
[2007] Holly “Jean” Grow
In September, Forest and I welcomed our seventh baby (the fourth boy!) and named him George. We are enjoying our likely last mild winter by the coast and looking forward to moving home to the family ranch in Walla Walla this year. With this many kids, Forest ought to be able to keep the fences in order and the 135-year-old barn standing! This move brings us closer to the dairy-dense portion of the state and only two hours away from the region’s veterinary school. That is helpful when the twins are more than halfway to college age already!

I purchased Critter Care Animal Clinic on March 15, 2016 (my 33rd birthday!). I was fortunate enough to go into business with my best friend and amazing vet tech, Crysta Ladwig. The practice is located in Sheboygan, Wis. I also got married to a wonderful man named Andrew on Oct. 10, 2016. We have a crazy household with his 5-year-old son, Matthew, six rescued dogs, a conure, and a small flock of chickens.
[2009] Adam Bauknecht
In May 2016, I completed a graduate certificate in Shelter Medicine through UF Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program. This three-course program featured cutting-edge shelter protocols, philosophies, and interactive discussion with leaders in the field, as well as laying the groundwork for a master’s in Shelter Medicine. This year, I also completed my 500th spay/neuter surgery!
Caitlin Cotter
I have been all over the place, which is probably not a surprise! After veterinary school, I completed a small animal medical and surgical internship at Washington State University and then practiced emergency medicine in Philadelphia for five years. Last year, I was at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health for my MPH. After graduating in May 2016, I went to Ecuador for two months with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting for a global health journalism fellowship. My project was on lead toxicity in the Andes due to ceramics glazing. I returned to vetmed.wisc.edu/svm-alumni-class-notes

Washington D.C. for a brief health science policy fellowship before heading back down to Bolivia in December for Zika and other tropical medicine research projects with a team from Johns Hopkins. In July 2017, I will begin an EIS Officer position with the CDC. I am excited, and I hope you all are well!

In July 2016, I finished a residency at Texas A&M University in small animal internal medicine. I found out the same month that I passed my speciality board exam and am now a board-certified small animal internal medicine specialist. I work at the VCA Emergency Animal Hospital and Referral Center in San Diego, Calif.
Suzanne McKichan
Ryan, Levi (4), Rylee (2), and I are are still in Wisconsin Dells and loving it. Solo equine practice has been a great fit for me, and I’ve been busier than I ever expected. I have also realized a passion for working with equine rescue causes and have had the privilege of leading teams of veterinary students doing volunteer work at Midwest Horse Welfare Foundation. I hope everyone else is doing well, and hopefully there are more updates from our class this year!

I married Daniel Ricci on Sept. 30, 2016, and we now live in Madison, Wis. I am continuing to work as a large and small animal veterinarian while Daniel finishes his PhD in social and administrative sciences in pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin.

My husband, Nick, and I welcomed baby Claire to our family in June 2016. Big brother Luke is quite tickled to have a little sister to love, hug, kiss, and I’m sure some day pick on.

A lot has changed since graduation. First of all, I took a job in Clintonville Wis., but left after a year. I found myself drawn to Wausau, where I met my husband. I took a job at the Birnamwood Veterinary Service, and Tony and I got married two years later in April 2015. We are co-owners of the family farm where we milk about 80 cows, have about 55 head of beef, and one miniature horse. So that keeps us pretty busy. This August, we welcomed our first child, Oliver. Despite being a little early, everything was just fine. We love our little guy, and it’s so much fun watching him learn and develop.

Starting in January 2016, I began working for the NY State Gaming Commission as the supervising veterinarian at Monticello Raceway. My husband, Sam, and I are also happy to announce that after buying our first home in Goshen, N.Y., we are expecting our first child — a little boy — in May 2017!
Allison (Troutman) Dunlop
I recently got married in May 2016 and was elected to the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (AHVMA) Board of Directors in September 2016. I was also nominated to be the AHVMA Emerging Leader representative at the 2017 AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference.
Dana Franzen-Klein
After graduation, I completed a small animal rotating internship at a private specialty practice in Albuquerque, N.M. I then worked as a small animal general practitioner in the Twin Cities area for a year while volunteering at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota. From 2015-16 I completed a clinical internship at the Wildlife Center of Virginia. I was able to work with a wide variety of species in Virginia; one of my favorites was the American black bear. As of August 2016, I am the veterinary resident at The Raptor Center in St. Paul, Minn. I am also completing a master’s degree at the University of Minnesota. Amidst moving from Virginia to Minnesota, my husband, Ben, and I celebrated our marriage on July 9, 2016!

On Jan. 1, 2017, I started a one-year American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) advanced clinical training fellowship in nephrology and urology at Purdue University. We have been living in Lafayette, Ind., for the last several years while I finished my medicine residency. My husband, Finley, daughter, Hazel, and son, Graham, are all doing well. Hazel and Graham are looking forward to new adventures in a year! We’ll keep you all posted on what happens next.
What a crazy, scary, and wonderful year it has been! My quiet bachelor life has come to an end. We welcomed into our home an adorable and terribly naughty kitten named Baal (Lord of Destruction) — compliments to Sarah Diederich DVM’13 Sometimes love can overcome for finally getting me to football rivalries - Go B1G! take home one of her farm kittens. I am also excited to announce that, as of May 2, 2016, I’m engaged to my beautiful fiancée, Michelle House. We are set to be married Sept. 17, 2017! But wait...there’s more! I finally took the plunge into practice ownership with the purchase of Lavitt Animal Hospital, a small animal general practice in Morton Grove, Ill., at the end of September this year. It’s certainly a project, but pursuing this sort of opportunity has always been my professional goal. We’ve got a long way to go, but I have to keep reminding myself of how far we’ve come in such a short period of time to keep a level head. My husband, James, and I welcomed our son, Matthew Charles Hoffman, into the family on May 6, 2016, weighing 6 pounds, 15.5 ounces and measuring 20.5 inches long. We live in Belleville, Pa., where I work as a dairy veterinarian for Centre Herd Health Services.
