 International Primate Heart Project (IPHP) research by Cardiff Met in collaboration with veterinary practitioners, cardiac physiologists and cardiologists has provided an insight into cardiac health and disease in chimpanzees, as well as highlighting cardiac similarities between humans and primates..  Various senior appointments within the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) have been made this year, with several Cardiff Met alumni taking up posts. Ex-British Lion and Wales captain Ryan Jones became Head of Participation, reporting to another former Cardiff Met student, WRU CEO, Martyn Phillips. Alumnus Geraint John was appointed Head of Rugby Performance. Warren Gatland's national team set-up also includes Head of Performance Analysis, Rhodri Bown, who was in the same university year as Ryan and Marc Kinnaird, one of many talented analysts to have studied at the University’s Centre for Performance Analysis. They add to the myriad of players and backroom staff who studied in Cyncoed.  The University announced plans to develop a major media and communications school in partnership with Phoenix Education, a subsidiary of leading Chinese television company Phoenix Satellite Television Holdings, which has been endorsed by City of Cardiff Council.  At the beginning of the academic session, the University ranked top in the UK for overall international student support in the annual International Student Barometer (ISB) survey for the 6th time.

 Cardiff Met ranked top university in Wales for Economics and 21st out of 68 in the UK in The Guardian University Guide 2016.  Cardiff Met received a generous £42,000 investment from Welsh Government for a new digital service for people with early on-set dementia. PDR worked with The City of Cardiff Council and Cardiff & Vale University Health Board to design the new Enablement Service.  Cardiff Met’s women’s rugby team secured a 10th victory in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) cup final at Twickenham. The team, which is coached by WRU Women's coach Rhys Edwards recorded nine wins in ten games and a total score of 628 points with just 21 conceded throughout the tournament.

 Former Olympic 1500m champion Lord Sebastian Coe visited our Beijing office in August (above), in his first official engagement after being appointed President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). Lord Coe, an Honorary Fellow of the University, was in Beijing for the IAAF World Championships, and was hosted by Cardiff Met alumnus Lynn Davies, who is President of UK Athletics, Olympic gold medal winner, and an Honorary Fellow of the University.

International Partnerships The University is a foundation member of garagErasmus, the Erasmus generation professional network. garagErasmus connects former Erasmus students – over 3 million people currently aged between 20 and 50 – to help them find suitable jobs, create new businesses, and contribute to economic and social innovation in Europe. It will also assist in keeping track of Erasmus alumni, their careers, mobility patterns, lifelong learning needs and aspirations after their Erasmus support. The University has secured over €500,000 of Erasmus+ funding in the first two rounds.

Fifteen undergraduate students from the Cardiff School of Art and Design visited the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology through a two-week exchange programme supported by the University’s short-term mobility fund. The visit provided opportunities for joint working between students from Cardiff and Beijing with an itinerary that included a lecture programme, student workshops, networking sessions and an exhibition of CSAD student work. The visit also provided a unique opportunity for staff to explore potential for future joint research projects and to provide advice to prospective students.

International mobility is also supported through the University’s membership of Santander Universities Global Division with all current staff and students being eligible to apply for funding to visit any other Santander University worldwide.

Cardiff Met’s annual partnership conference was attended by over 30 delegates from 13 of the University’s partner institutions located in Bahrain, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, India, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Wales. The Conference keynote session, focussing on trends in the internationalisation of Higher Education, was delivered by the Secretary General of the Magna Charta Observatory, Mr David Lock.

The final-year consortium meeting of the Cardiff Met led EU-METALIC[1] II Erasmus Mundus project has taken place in Morocco with 29 participants attending from 16 partner institutions in 10 countries. The purpose of the meeting was to devise a dissemination strategy for the project which offers scholarships to students and staff in Europe and North Africa.

South Africa

The University has announced plans to develop a major media and communications school in the Welsh capital. The new school is a unique partnership with Phoenix Education, a subsidiary of leading Chinese television company Phoenix Satellite Television Holdings, and has been encouraged by the Cardiff City Council. It is the first joint venture of its kind with a private firm and any UK university. In February the three parties signed a memorandum of understanding at the Mansion House, Cardiff, confirming their commitment to developing this project. The ambition is for a new building housing a TV media centre, teaching space and student accommodation for up to 2,000 students. Phoenix Satellite Television Holdings is a New York and Hong Kong Stock Exchange listed company which has six channels broadcasting to 360 million viewers worldwide. Phoenix Education has four media colleges in China. The cost and timescale for the development remain under discussion.

A delegation of senior academics and quality assurance experts from science faculties in Saudi Arabia visited the University as part of a Spring UK study tour facilitated by the National Commission for Academic Accreditation and Assessment (NCAAA) and the British Council.

Building upon the success of Global Day celebrations in 2014 and 2015 the University hosted its first Global Week in March. The event provided students with opportunities to celebrate, learn and share values and traditions through the conversation, integration and networking of individuals from a range of different nationalities and backgrounds.

Cyncoed Campus

Infrastructure & Estate

A group of teachers from Singapore participated in a week-long programme provided by the Cardiff School of Education this Spring. The purpose of the study-visit, which was organised through the Singapore Government’s Physical Education and Sports Teacher Academy (PESTA) project, was to provide the visitors with insight as to how physical education is taught in Wales. The University hopes to extend the sharing of best practice through further such collaboration.

The University has awarded Vice-Chancellor’s scholarships to two students from CTI Education, Cardiff Met’s partner university in South Africa. The students, who will be studying for postgraduate awards arrive in Cardiff in September.

The first phase a new Estates Strategy for our Cyncoed Campus is a sports hall. Work commenced on site in November 2015, and when finished will enhance the existing facilities for students on campus, and for elite sports men and women, and will also provide further opportunities for the local community.

The second phase, due to begin in January 2018, is a further sports complex housing a new swimming pool to replace the existing pool built in the 1960s. Additionally, a new running track will be developed. These new sports facilities have been fortunate to receive a £250,000 grant from the Garfield Weston Foundation. Work also continues on the refurbishment of the Cyncoed Halls of Residence. On the Llandaff Campus, work is underway on the second phase of the reconfiguration of School of Health Sciences. That is due for completion at the end of August 2016.
