OPENING A BANK ACCOUNT (WITHOUT SSN) 1. Choose a bank

Look for banks in your area or around the college campus that offer accounts for international students. Branches located within 2.5 miles of UT San Antonio main campus: Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase Bank, PNC Bank, Capital One

2. Gather Required Documents While you won't need an SSN, you'll still need to provide certain documents and identification. The bank you choose will inform you which documents are required, but they typically include: Your passport with a valid F-1 visa stamp. Your I-20 form (F-1 visa) or DS-2019 form (J-1 visa) Your I-94 Arrival/Departure Record (which you can access online). Proof of local address (such as a lease agreement or utility bill in your name or a letter from your school confirming your local address).

3. Visit the bank in person - Create account While some banks may allow you to start the application process online, you will likely need to visit the local branch in order to complete your application. Determine the best account for you (tailored to international students). Verify personal information and documents Complete application Initial deposit to new account (minimum deposit requirement varies)

4. Receive your bank materials and activate your debit card After your account has been set up and approved, you will receive a welcome kit. This kit will include a debit card, checkbook (if applicable), and account information. You can then activate your debit card by following the bank's instructions, which typically include calling a designated number or using the bank's mobile app or website.

5. Start using your account! 21

PHONE PLAN Setting up a cell phone plan in the United States as an international student can be a straightforward process, but it may require some documentation and considerations based on your specific situation. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

1. Determine Your Needs: Consider your budget, data, talk, and text requirements. Decide whether you want a prepaid or postpaid plan. Prepaid plans don't require a credit check and can be more flexible for international students.

2. Research: Research mobile network providers and their plans. Like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Mint Mobile. Make sure your current phone is compatible with U.S. networks. Inquire about international calling charges.

3. Prepare Documentation: Passport, visa, I-94, DS-2019 I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status) Proof of address (e.g., a utility bill or lease agreement if you have one).

4. Credit Check or Deposit: Some providers may require a credit check. If you don't have a U.S. credit history, you might need to pay a deposit, which is refundable after a certain period of on-time payments.

5. Activation: Activate the physical SIM if your phone supports dual SIM ports. If not, activate an eSIM. This means you can keep your home number and add a U.S. number on the same device. Follow provider’s instructions & test before leaving.

20

** Pro-Tip:

If you don’t want to commit to a traditional phone plan right away, try virtual number (like Google Voice) that works over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Heads-up! Some apps (like banking or delivery services) may not work as they need a number tied to a U.S. carrier.
