The Utrecht Summer School 2026
The Utrecht Summer School (USS) started in the 1980s with just one course in Dutch Culture. From that point onwards, the USS has developed a broad selection of courses in a large range of subjects. We are proud of our 170+ courses, which attract over 3000 students from all around the world, offering people an unforgettable stay in Utrecht!

Our Courses: in Utrecht, Rome, Florence, Berlin and Riga Utrecht Summer School courses are taught at several locations in and around Utrecht.
In addition to the courses in Utrecht, we also offer courses in other parts of Europe. These courses are hosted by and organised by partner universities. This year, courses will be held in Italy, Germany and Latvia. Study (art) history in these amazing places and apply now!
Tracks
In this brochure, on the first page of each discipline, you will find an overview of our track courses. A track consists of several subsequent courses in a certain area of expertise, an ideal way to study multiple subjects, and get a nice discount.
Student housing
During the summer, the Utrecht Summer School offers its participants student housing in Utrecht. This includes a private bedroom, with shared facilities such as a kitchen and bathroom. A room costs €275 per week. Student rooms are not hotel rooms, but they are a great way to meet fellow students.
Social Programme
Utrecht Summer School aims to provide its participants with an unforgettable stay in Utrecht and the Netherlands. In addition to the study programme, there is a social programme offering night canoeing, pub


quizzes, bowling nights and this year some lustrum events. Register via our website! Students can also visit the Botanical Gardens on the Utrecht Science Park for free! Finally, USS has partnered up with sports centre Olympos to give everyone the opportunity to exercise during their stay in Utrecht.

The Netherlands, located in northwestern Europe and known for its high quality of life, is one of Europe’s most welcoming and innovative countries. Visitors experience a vibrant lifestyle—cycling through historic cities, exploring cutting-edge architecture, and enjoying a rich cultural scene. The country is a hub for international business and research, providing excellent networking opportunities. With its central location, traveling across Europe is easy (Berlin, Brussels and Paris are just a train ride away), and English is widely spoken.
Visit Utrecht
Utrecht is a lively city in the geographical centre of the Netherlands. With its historical centre, several canals crisscross the city with the Dom Tower as its focus point. With no less than 70,000 students, Utrecht is a true knowledge centre, where you will find excellent museums, unexpected small restaurants and delightful shops. The city’s compact size, excellent public transport, and extensive cycle paths make it easy to get around, while its location in the centre of the Netherlands makes it a hub for exploring the country. Additionally, its friendly atmosphere, combined with cultural attractions like the Dom Tower and Tivoli-Vredenburg music venue, create a great blend of big-city amenities and a cozy, manageable feel.

The Making of Europe
This track takes students from Rome to Utrecht to Berlin, and provides an overview of the history and functioning of Europe. Travel back in time and immerse yourself in the history and culture of Europe.
European Studies
Studying in the beautiful medieval city of Utrecht, you will look into the various European cultures and identities. You will examine the three major wars that shaped the 20th century in Europe: WW I and II, and the Cold War.
Dutch Culture in a European Context
This special track offers you the opportunity to study European and Dutch culture in one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in the Netherlands: the city of Utrecht. The topics you will study will help you to understand the complicated structure of Europe.
European Encounters
The aim of the track is to introduce the diversity and unity of European identities, the European Union, (shared) foreign policy, security dilemmas and new challenges. This joint programme is offered by Utrecht University and the University of Latvia.

Founding Europe: From Antiquity to the 19th Century
You will dive into the exhilarating history of Europe, from the rise of civilization in Antiquity to the modern era of the 19th century. Together, these courses will provide you with a thorough knowledge of the history of these cities and nations.
Discovering the Dutch: Dutch Culture and Society
This special track explores the question of Dutch identity by placing the history of the Netherlands and Dutch art in a wider European and transatlantic perspective. Dutch identity and heritage will be discussed and you will focus on public debates in current Dutch society.
The Rise of Modern Europe
Seize the opportunity to stay in two of the most exciting cities of Europe: Utrecht and Berlin, and travel back in time! You will immerse yourself in Europe’s history and culture from the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century and visit many of its actual physical remains. 6 Jul. - 31 Jul. 2026
Old Catholic Theology: Contexts and Calling
This track consists of two connected courses; an introduction to Old Catholic theology and the possibility to deepen your understanding of Old Catholic Theology in ecumenical Catholicity, taught by experts in Old Catholic theology of the Old Catholic Seminary, Utrecht.

Have you ever wondered what makes Europeans ‘European’?
During this course you will uncover the answers while staying in the beautiful medieval city of Utrecht. You will explore Europe’s cultural pluralism and examine its varied identities that still exist today.
European Politics and Economy
During this course, you will be introduced to the history of the European Union, its structures, aims and challenges. It offers an introduction to the political landscape of Europe. Lecturers will elaborate on the historical background and the various stages of integration.
The Making of Europe: Rise of Civilization
This two-week course will bring you to the heart of Rome, where you will learn about the political, social and religious history behind the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages and the birth of the Renaissance and Baroque while visiting a variety of beautiful ancient sites in the city.
Ecumenical Catholicity: The Old Catholic Witness
Can Catholics be ecumenical? The answer is yes! If you’d like to explore this, this course offers you a unique opportunity. We will focus on the ecumenical commitment, witness, highs and lows of ecumenical theology of the churches of the Union of Utrecht.
Anglicanism in European Perspective
This course is intended for any student of Christian traditions, whether living or simply visiting in Europe, interested in seeing this historic Christian tradition through the lens of its centuries-long presence on the European Continent.
Queer Poetry: A Transhistorical and Transnational Perspective
This course will present exemplary voices from various historical periods and geographical areas: from Sappho to Shakespeare & Lorca to Cavafy. Part of the course is dedicated to specific case studies and close readings of contemporary poets.
The Making of Europe: From Middle Ages to Modernity
Taking the alluring city of Utrecht as a starting point, this course offers students the opportunity to step into history. The visits to museums, cathedrals and canals will show students some of the most breathtaking highlights of European history and culture.
Dutch Cultural Heritage: Art and History
This course studies the cultural heritage of the Low Countries from a critical perspective. The mechanics and politics of heritage-making will be dealt with by zooming in on the Low Countries, while visiting monumental buildings, museums and cultural landscapes.
Navigating Security in the Baltic States
This course in Riga goes beyond traditional boundaries, offering an analysis of security, ranging from the robust realms of hard security to the nuanced aspects of soft security. It empowers the ever-evolving relationships that shape the Baltic States’ strategic position.
The 20th Century: Europe in Three Wars
This course will guide you through a variety of questions relating to the First and Second World Wars. The 20th century can just as easily be seen as an era of rebuilding, transatlantic collaboration, and global connections; showing that the 20th century is much more multifaceted.
Dutch Culture: Society and Current Issues
During this course you will be introduced to Dutch culture and identity by scholars and guest lecturers. We aim to lay a solid foundation of knowledge of present-day Dutch society and its recent history focusing on two central themes: Society and Contemporary Issues.
The Making of Europe: From the 20th to the 21st Century
This course provides an overview of the political, socio-economic, and cultural developments that shaped Europe throughout the 20th century and the first decades of the 21st century. We will be looking through the prism of European integration and the evolution and current challenges.
Exploring the Future through Stories in Literature and Film
In this course we employ recent research, novel narrative (psychological) theory, and practical exercises exploring how stories in literature and film can be a great inspiration for our narrative imagination of the future.
Enacting the Posthuman
This course explores Braidotti’s posthuman philosophy, through applied practices that enact the notion of the posthuman convergence. The focus is on teaching and transmitting posthuman thought, and on exploring convergences across the disciplines.

History of Art: A Thousand Years of European Highlights
The European Highlights course combines a broad approach with profound analysis over a period of six weeks in Florence, Utrecht and Berlin. Seize this opportunity to travel back in time and through some of Europe’s most incredible museums in only one summer.
History of Art: Relations between Italy and the Netherlands
Experience the art of both traditions firsthand, staying in two cities that played a crucial role in the art of their country: Florence and Utrecht. This course takes place largely in front of the original artworks, allowing you to discuss and learn more about them.
History of Art: Highlights in Germany and the Netherlands
This four-week course is offered in collaboration with the Freie Universität in Berlin. You will have the chance to explore the art scenes of these two vibrant cities, both from a past and present perspective, to compare differences and similarities between the two locations.
A Journey through Dutch Art
Discover the famous masters from the 17th century, up to the early decades of modernism. We will take you out of the classroom and into cities, museums and churches – you will not be able to get closer to the masterpieces themselves!

The Art of the Renaissance in Florence and Rome
The fundamental goals of this course are to introduce students to the art and architecture of Florence and Rome in its historical context, and in doing so, to make them familiar with the origins, nature, and development of the Renaissance in the visual arts.
Anglican Cathedral Music
Discover the enduring appeal of Anglican cathedral music in the heart of Utrecht. We invite participants to explore the rich tradition of Anglican Cathedral Music from multiple perspectives: musical, liturgical, theological, educational and performative.
Hildegard von Bingen: Medieval Chant
Discover the inspiring music of Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179), one of the most influential women of the Middle Ages. Her Symphonia Harmoniae Caelestium Revelationum is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Western music history.

The Golden Age of Dutch Art

Composing Film Music
Film music is one of the most essential elements in audiovisual story telling. During this course we will cover various aspects of being a film music composer. Using both theory and practical exercises, you will learn about the complicated tasks of a film music composer.
Filmmaking for Beginners
This course provides an introduction into filmmaking; training in basic storytelling and practical skills that are required for shooting and editing a short film. We take a close look at the creative process and will practice the art by making several short films.
Screenwriting, Storytelling and AI
Stories have always been part of our nature, as storytelling is a way to process our daily experiences. This intensive screenwriting course helps you write and improve your own screenplay using theory and feedback from the teacher and fellow students.
Photography & Storytelling
How to create your own Utrecht City photobook - In this course, you’ll learn basic principles of how to take strong photos and create your own photo book about your experience of the city of Utrecht, with an endless variety of subjects possible.

Immuno-oncology
This interdisciplinary lab course gives you a realistic insight into the life of a biomedical researcher. We provide advanced bachelor students the opportunity to conduct authentic and real-world biomedical research in small interdisciplinary groups.
Biostatistics for Researchers
The course provides an introduction into statistical methodology for life sciences and it discusses a number of statistical techniques for practical data analysis. Concrete examples and case studies are used to apply the theory to practical situations.
Pharmaceutical Policy Analysis

Formalizing Mathematics in Lean
This course offers a hands-on introduction to formalizing mathematics in Lean, a state-of-the-art interactive theorem prover. You will learn how to formalize mathematics in Lean enabling you to contribute to Leans mathematical library and strengthen your understanding.

This summer school will bring you up-to-date with state-of-the-art research and teaching practices in the fields of science and mathematics education, including inquiry-based learning, education for sustainability, educational technology as well as inclusive education.

Dutch Beginners Course 1+2 (A0 -> A1+)

English Advanced Course 1+2 (B2 -> C1)
Are you ready to take a major step in improving your English language skills? This intensive four-week course is perfect for those who want to make significant progress. You will be able to express yourself fluently and confidently at an advanced level.
Intensive Chinese Language and Culture for Beginners
The Chinese language is the most widely spoken language in the world. Learning Chinese can open a new door for you to explore the culture and society of this rapidly developing country. Starting from zero, you will be able to conduct simple conversations.
Chinese Language and Culture - level HSK3 HSK4
Learning Chinese can open a new door for you to explore the culture and society of this rapidly developing country. Starting with basic knowledge of Chinese you will be able to further your language skills, converse in Chinese on a wide range of topics.
Dutch Language for German Speakers (A0 B2)
Are you a German speaker who’s looking to learn Dutch quickly and effectively? In a small class of up to 16 students, our intensive Dutch Language Course for German Speakers will help you master the Dutch language and culture in just four weeks. This course is offered twice during the summer of 2026.

Beginners Dutch - part 1 (A0 A1-)
Would you like to confidently order a drink at a café or strike up a brief conversation with Dutch locals? This course is designed for beginners with no prior knowledge of Dutch. You will learn to communicate in Dutch at elementary level. This course is offered twice during the summer of 2026.
Beginners Dutch - part 2 (A1- A1+)
Do you want to improve your comprehension of Dutch and express yourself better? This course will help beginners, who already have some prior knowledge of Dutch, improve their skills. Talk about new topics and learn how to use the past tense. This course is offered twice during the summer of 2026.
English Advanced – part 1 (B2 B2+)
Do you want to communicate more effectively and confidently in English? This is often useful in a wide range of work, study and social settings. This in-depth course will help you improve your language skills in two weeks.
English Advanced – part 2 (B2+ C1)
Would you like to express yourself more fluently in English at an advanced level? Maybe you still struggle to find the right phrases or you have a hard time understanding academic writing. This course will give you the tools to help you bridge that gap.
