The legacy established at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) School of Nursing is strong. The collective efforts by our faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, and community partners have not only advanced nursing education, but have provided life‑changing opportunities for students and faculty who will continue to strengthen the nursing workforce for decades to come. I am profoundly proud of what we have achieved collectively, and I am excited to share the vision for our future.
The new strategic plan has been developed alongside countless stakeholders at the local, regional, and state levels. We understand that the work we do here at UTMB ripples across the state and we feel passionate about that positive impact reaching populations around the world.
Since joining UTMB School of Nursing in 2020, the VISION 2025 strategic plan was set forth to CREATE the future for nursing excellence. This model not only laid a solid foundation for the school but set us on a path of growth that I have been immensely proud to support.
Throughout it all, the commitment to excellence and unwavering devotion to quality healthcare has been a throughline that we are proud to showcase. As we honor our successful past, I am proud to know that the School of Nursing will continue not only to thrive in these pursuits but to SHINE bright as an innovative leader in education, research, practice, and service.
As we head into the new year with a fresh strategic plan, I hope you find pride in everything we have accomplished together. The sense of community we have created and our ongoing commitment to excellence and care are what make our UTMB School of Nursing so special. UTMB School of Nursing Strategic Planning Process
A comprehensive, stakeholder driven strategic planning process was undertaken by the UTMB School of Nursing (SON) starting in early 2025, charting a bold direction for the school spanning 2026 to 2029. The process was facilitated by Clarus Consulting Group and grounded in extensive stakeholder engagement, leadership alignment, and a deep analysis of environmental opportunities and challenges.
Collaborative Planning: The planning process centered on over 107 stakeholders across eight distinct communities of interest, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, university leaders, community members, and clinical partners. Through interviews and focus groups, participants provided input on SON strengths, gaps, and future possibilities, ensuring the plan reflects broad institutional insight and builds shared ownership.
Leadership Alignment and Vision
Setting: The effort began with a leadership development session designed to strengthen cohesion and prepare leaders to champion the forthcoming plan. Leadership emphasized that the school must be recognized as a model of nursing excellence, with innovation, academic clinical integration, research, workplace culture, and technology leadership as core pillars.
Development of Strategic Priority Areas: The strategic plan crystalized into priorities that articulate the school’s ambitions. Each priority is supported by clearly defined goals and a set of detailed objectives to guide and develop outcome metrics.
