In order for the au d ie nce to better a ppreciate a nd understand the sign ifi can ce a tta ched to these ceremonial a spects of the progra m. the following information is pre sented . Th e significa nce o f the costume is determined principa ll y by the cut of the gow n . the size and shape of th e hood . a nd the color of the tassels on th e ca p. Th e BACHELOR 'S gown is characterized by th e long pointed sleeves. The gown worn by a MASTER ha s closed sleeves with the arc

of a circle nea r the bottom . The arm extends through the slit . giving the appearance of short sleeves. Th e hood consists of material similar to the gown a nd lined with the official academic color of the in stitution conferrin g the degree . If the in stitution ha s more than one color, the chevron is used to di splay the second color. The DOCTOR 'S gown has full. round and open sleeves with three bars of velvet on each sleeve. The velvet facing of the ba rs may be black or the color indica tive of the degree. The hood consists of a larger and longer assembla ge of institutional color draped over the recipient's shoulders a nd falling well down the back. The colors worn on the tassels signify the va riou s coll eges of the Universi ty from which a candidate is being graduated.

HONORARY DEGREE CITATIONS

DARYL CHASE In 1957, the Utah State Agricultural College became Utah State University by an act of the state legislature. It was not mere historical hap~ penstance that Daryl Chase was president of the institution at that time, for he was, in large part, responsible for the transformation which made that change of title appropriate. For a man of vision, the status quo is never enough, and Daryl Chase is such a man. It was a quality which changed a respected college into a respected university that broadened its service to the people of the state, the nation and the world. Under the leadership of President Chase, Utah State University recruited academicians of distinc~ tion and provided them with facilities of high qual~ ity. The beautiful and functional Fine Arts Center bears his name; a great many other buildings on the campus could as appropriately do so. Under Daryl Chase, the scientific reputation of the University flourished ; the state of the arts was revolutionized , to the benefit of generations of students, present and future, and of the public at large. His far~ranging interests have brought a multitude of new programs to the campus, involv~ ed the university in national and international pro~ jects, and attracted to the educational community students from all the states of the Union and many foreign countries. We are indebted to him for more and greater services than we can here acknowledge, and it is only in partial recognition of his many achieve~ ments on behalf of Utah State University that we confer on Daryl Chase the honorary degree of DOCTOR OF HUMANITIES.

.J. GEORGE HARRAR To bring a man such as J. George Harrar to the campus of Utah State University to do him honor, is to bring honor to the University. Proud of our traditions in international programs, in our investigations that have had world~wide consequen~ ces, we deem it most fitting to recognize the work of one whose writing. teaching , consultation, ad~ ministration-in a word, leadership-have exten-:led from interior America throughout the world . Biological scientist, professor and department head, director of programs, member of boards and

councils, honored by universities and by govern~ ments, J. George Harrar symbolizes the ability of man to work with institutions to accomplish what no man can do alone, and at the same time demon~ strates the dependence of institutions upon the outstanding individual, for with small men, no great thing can be accomplished. As current trustee and president of both the General Education Board and the Rockefeller Foun~ dation, J. George Harrar is applying his training, his intelligence, and wisdom to some of the most important problems in this our time of many rroblems. The world is fortunate to have some of its most pressing needs responsive to the positive app~ lica tion of so matured a wisdom. THEODORE M. HESBURGH In this turbulent 20th century we stand between two worlds. One world is chaotic. Many a person wanders disconsolate. For him the emulation of the divine pattern of Jesus seems hopeless among ani ~ mal passions and the feverish conflicts of ideolog~ ies. In shadows lit briefly by flashes of lurid light he can scarcely distinguish friend from foe. The other world grows out of the beneficense of the Supreme Being. It is lighted with burning faith cherished by men of vision. They may em~ brace diverse beliefs but all unite in laboring for a finer , higher life. From this realm, Father Hes~ burgh, you walk with sure strides carrying messages of understanding, compassion and hope . We may apply to you the utterance of a n ancient sage who said that world brotherhood can be fostered by him who, ruled by love of humanity , thinks good thoughts , pronounces good words and performs good deeds. You walk across into the zone of fierce extremism focu sing your keen ga ze upon vexing problems, but you reveal warm under~ standing and consideration for others. You combine sympathy with strength, incisiveness with love. Because we cannot list all your contributions here, we emphasize your endeavors to further the philosophy and structures of world brotherhood and your aid in advancing understanding of young

Hesburgh, in recognition of your distinguished services as president of a great university, author, and leader in helping man realize ever more of the potentialities implicit in his God given talents and powers, we of Utah State University are honored to confer upon you the honorary degree of DOCTOR OF HUMANITIES.

Professor McGauhey is loved and honored as a great teacher and his students now occupy many positions of importance in water management. He is not only a pioneer scientist, he is a humanitarian and a poet. In recognition of his lifelong service to hu~ manity as a teacher, researcher, engineer, poet, hu~ manist, and developer of the West, Utah State University takes P'ride in conferring on Percy Harold McGauhey the honorary degree of DOCTOR OF SCIENCE.

PERCY HAROLD MCGAUHEY This is an era of growing severity of environ~ mental problems and of increasing public sensitivity to the threat environmental mismanagement poses for the quality of human lives. It is especially ap~ propriate, therefore, that this University honor a man who has made distinctive contributions to the solution of these problems. Percy Harold McGauhey has devoted his life to furthering the sanitary en~ gineering through the training of students and the conduct of research, and by working with state, national and international agencies in the planning of resource use and design, construction and opera~ tion of facilities for waste management. Born on a homestead in eastern Oregon, he has retained the common touch with nature and man. This has led to his lifelong concern that the use of scarce resources should be prudent, that human and industrial wastes are a threat to health and beauty and constitute a potentially impressive source of scarce resources. His teaching, writing, and research led to distinguished careers at Vir~ ginia Polytechnic Institute and at the University of California. Dr McGauhey has produced more than one hundred scientific papers, and the distinctive ex~ cellence of his work has brought him honors from the American Waterworks Association. the Water Pollution Control Board, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He has been widely sought as a professional consultant, assisting in the improve~ ment of waste management in such diverse places as Blacksburg, Virginia, Lake Tahoe, Kuwait, Chili, Israel. and India. He has given freely of his time and energy in assisting Utah State University in its environmental and water resources programs.

ALMA SONNE There are in the fortunate communities some men whose qualities of intelligence, judgment, character, and leadership are so generally recognized that they are called upon by their fellow citizens to serve in many capacities. Such a man is Alma Sonne, who, for more than a half century, has given unselfishly of his time and energy to his community, his state, and his church. During a critical fifteen year period of the University's growth, Mr. Sonne served with distinction on its Board of Trustees, and for ten yet~rs was the Board's Chairman. His was not a narrow parochial view, but rather a broad and cosmopolitan one. He understood the mission of a university and the necessity for the academic freedom of its staff to accomplish it. He supported a broadened curriculum, the development of a competent faculty , the growth of a diversified studentbody. The governing bodies of institutions of higher learning are sometimes torn by dissension among competing interests, always to the detriment of the institution. The presence of Alma Sonne upon the Board of Trustees of Utah State University was a powerful deterrent to any such occurrance. For him the position was a public trust, and his attitude was influential with his colleagues. When the Board debated policy, his leadership insured that the in~ terest of the University was the ultimate concern at all times. In recognition of his many years of devoted service to the cause of higher education we are proud to confer upon Alma Sonne the honorary degree of DOCTOR OF LAWS.

CLASS GIFT The Class of 1971 has elected to present the University with the gift of $1,000 as an initial contribution to a class fund to be used in support of the needs of the University. Members of the class are being invited to make annual contributions to the fund which will be invested and at some future date the proceeds transferred to the University. In recognition of the gift, it is the intention of the University to prepare a plaque to be mounted on a wall (shown below) which will be the focal point of a new garden being developed adjacent to the chemistry building and directly across the street from the University Center. The wall will be used for tributes to those who have invested in the future of USU and the Class of 1971 will have the honor of being the first to be so recognized.
