Dr. Taggart views Utah State as existing to assist its students to find an understanding of human life so as to be ready and equipped for the practice of it. Utah State also seeks to help its students find excitement in th e intellectual life. It no doubt perfects

other phases of the student, broadens skills, extends their acquaintances and hopefully strengthens their moral fib er as each and every student takes, uses and eventually values all the many facets of the university life that may have an effect. The sisters of Alpha Chi Omega ( translation - the First and the Last ) approached the year by taking pledges during fall rush to carryon Alpha's traditions. Thus, began a year full of sneaks, stolen dinners, missing light bulbs , sticky doorknobs, etc., etc. Highlights this year have included annual altruistic projects, parties, and intramurals. Alphies enjoyed participating in sports and, in united effort, took intramurals. Proceeding with understanding, confidence, and courage, which flow from conviction, the sisters of Alpha Chi Omega enjoyed a fun-filled 1970-1971 at USU.

Sigma ll , now in its lOlst year, was th e great pioneering fraternity in th e American \Vest, opening up six states to the frat ernity system. Its USU chapter dates back to 1914 and the founding of its predecessor local , D elta u. Chapter alumni numb er three college presidents , a Utah governor, a former U. S. Secretary of Agriculture, among many other distinguished alums. A perennial campus leader, Sigma u sponsors the prestigious Robins Awards and the Award Night Ceremonies is on e of USU's most gala events. Proud possessors of th e fraternity scholarship trophy, Sigma Nu is also widely respected for th e numb er of its members active in campus honoraries and student government. Its chapter house, larges t in the intermountain west, has indoor swimming pool that is th e scene for exchange parties with sororities and for some highly popular parties .

Sigma Chi fraternity has played and will continue to playa significant rol e in USU campus life. Sigma Chis remain th e power in fraternity intramurals having won th e overall intramural title ten of the last cleven years. Every fall the Sigs sponsor D erby Days during which each of th e sororities compete for derbys and take part in frolicking games. The Sigs also light the "A" several times each year to initiate enthusiasm for ath letic events. Sigma Chi fraternity was founded on the principle that men of different temperam ents, tal ents , and convictions can live in harmony without losing th eir individualism. Any man wearing th e 'W hite Cross of Sigma Chi will admit that Sigma Chi has given him favor and distinction.

Campus Service Council

The Council was organized last spring under the direction of Jim Olsen. It consists of the presidents, or their representatives, of the service groups on campus. Each group individuality is stressed but the council allows the groups to help each other if necessary and to coordinate their efforts. The Council is an attempt for better communication and a wider range of activities for these groups.

Speech and Hearing The Utah State University Speech and Hearing Association is composed of members of the Department of Communicative Disorders. Members are majoring in either Audiology, Educational Audiology or Speech Pathology. USUSHA encourages the professional growth of its members by sponsoring guest speakers - in person and via tele-Iecture and by sponsoring the publication entitled the Threshold which includes both student and faculty professional articles and is distributed throughout the nation. In addition, the Associationprovides three social activities for its members during the year.

Rodeo Club Activities sponsored by the USU Rodeo Club, are to promote interest in our W estern H eritage and the great sport of rodeo. This year's activities included a Club Rodeo held at Hyrum on Oct. 10, and a Challenge Match with th e W eber State Rodeo Club held in the Golden Spike Coliseum at Ogden, D ec. 18-19. Several profesional rodeo films were shown at the meetings and one or two parties scheduled each quarter. The year was climaxed by the annual USU Rodeo, May l4-15, in which teams from 11 other clubs in the Rocky Mountain Region of the NIRA competed for points and prizes.

THE FUTURE RANGELANDS

Range Science The USU Chapter of the Society for Range Management is a student affiliate of a worldwide organization of scientists, students, educators, ranchers, and professional land managers concerned with the conservation and wise use of our native rangelands. Activities of the USU chapter include participation in state and n.ational meetings of the parent organization, a range plant identification team that competes with teams from throughout th e western United States, Mexico and Canada, and participation in a National student conclave. The chapter meets bi-weekly and sponsors guest lectures and sewral social events throughout the year.

Angel Flight Utah State's Angel Flight is a service organization sponsored by the Arnold Air Society. The Flight is composed of thirty of the most involved and busiest girls on campus. During the past year the Angels have been involved in several civic and volunteer projects including the Red Cross Blood Drive, a program presented at the old folks home in Logan , and Toys for Tots . The Angels and Arnold Air Society attended Area Conclave in Denver where they received several top awards .

Spurs Spurs are a sophomore women's service honary. Their purpose is to serve the college and the community. Spurs usher for basketball games, concerts, and other functions. As the core of a wheel, the Latter-day Saint Student Association serves the University student. Within its spokes it provides students with various activities: spiritual, academic and social. Hawaiian Club The Hui 0' Hawaii Club consisting of students from the fiftieth state of the union has ended the year successfully again. One of the Hawaiian Club's accomplishments is having won the trophy for the best float in the Independent Division during the Homecoming Festivities. This was the year of Big Blue Spirit and what a spirit it was. Touching ali, seen everywhere were buttons "Give a damn", even the plants for the stadium had Big Blue Spirit. A project of George Tribble, our Big Blue Spirit took many forms and shapes and was helped along by many forms and shapes including our cheerleaders.

Only recently completed, the new Activity Center is an impressive structure of massive proportions and already the scene of many a memorable event.

Homecoming 1970 resulted in one of the largest celebrations in the history of the University. Activities started Monday evening, November 9th, with the crowning of our Homecoming Queen Vicki Reynolds . Rhythm Rhapsodies was Wednesday evening and Thursday was topped off by a giant pep rally followed by a dance. Friday nite homecoming activities were highlighted by a concert featuring Rouvaun. Saturday morning a parade in downtown opened the day, followed by kick-off against University of Idaho. Finishing the days events was the Homecoming Ball and closing an exciting week was a performance Monday night by the Friends of Distinction. It was certairtly a week to remember by students and alumni both.

Utah State is proud to once again be represented abroad by a group of very talented young people. The Village Voices. Formed only two years ago under the direction of Richard Watkins, they have performed locally to enthusiastic audiences. Now in recognition of their talent and musical appeal they were selected for a usa tour and entertained the troops from here to Greenland.

"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," presented by the drama department was the hit comedy Production of Fall Quarter. The play included members of the faculty ranging from the classroom to the President's Office. The cast also included members of the USU alumni.

The Smith Brothers of Las Vegas highlighted one of the numerous rock dances sponsored by various organizations on campus.

A traditional part of Homecoming, Rhythm Rhapsodies became an evening to remember. A wide variety of entertainment by highly talented people. The competition was so keen third place resulted in a tie and first place was captured by Ellen Cutler representing West High Rise.

The USU varsity cheerleaders were instrumental in instilling a little school spirit into the studentbody spectators during the 1970 football season.

Beethoven's ninth symphony was performed by the Utah Symphony Orchestra and the combined choruses of USU and the Utah Civic Chorale to commemorate the birthday of the composer Ludwig Beethoven. Maurice Abravanel conducted the symphony and the featured solo artist was Ellen Wasserman playing Beethoven's Emperor Concerto. Miss Wasserman was a student of USU and is currently a graduate student at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Md. Vocal soloists performing in the second half included Donna Glazier, Christina Krosshos, Thomas E ast and William Ramsey. Those attending the concert were well rewarded.

The "Nutcracker" Christmas Ballet was performed. The Nutcracker is based on Clara and her experiences as she watches her toys come to life. A battle ensues b etween the mice and the toy tin soldiers. The nutcracker slays th e Mouse King, breaking the spell of th e handsome young price in the form of the nutcracker. The prince takes Clara through fantasyl and all depicted in the ballet.

International Week The banquet was a gathering of people, food, and entertainment from different parts of the country. Students, teachers, and families, from each country prepared their native meals. Entertainment was offered from the different cultures . During the week each country had a display of their customs and costumes. The week was highlighted by the crowning of the "International Queen."

Friends of Distinction - Floyd, Harry and Jessica, in conjunction with homecoming performed during the 1970-71 year. Another rock group which entertained USU students was Sugar Loaf performing their hit song Green Eyed Lady.

"Inherit the Wind," a play by Jerome Lawrence and Rob ert E. L ee was based on the Scopes evolution case. John Beyer is pictured as a Chicago attorney named Drummond who comes to defend a school teacher charged with violating the law against teachin g evolution. Dennis David, James Arrington , Christine Ingleby, and Tim Holst were others in the play.

Winter Activities

Well known speakers came to USU and one of the most prominent was Hung Wo Ching, who lectured at the Chase Fine Arts Center Tanuary 18. Hung Wo Ching is a presently prominent businessman and a former graduate of USU. Ching advocated aid to Asian Countries to further them in being selfsufficient and to prevent the infiltration of Communism in Asia. To provide equal trade opportunities with Asia some intervention is needed, but not the complete domination of trade. The lecture was followed by a studentfaculty panel discussion later that same day.

What were the juniors noted for? 'What else but the Junior Prom, the royalty, and the noted Letterman. The Letterman showed professionalism as th ey captured a capacity crowd at the Spectrum. Liberation wasn't the main theme, but the week emphasized the role of women in today's world. February 15-19 was the week honoring and furthering the "now" woman. The week started with a dating game; then Tuesday featured Colonel Jeanne M. Holm, director of Women's Air Force, explained the expanding movement to increase the women in the Air Force. Their assignments, uniforms, and increased responsibilities. Wednesday brought a discussion on "Reform of the Dorm." Dr. Allison Thorne spoke on women's liberation. Most preferred man contest, a fashion show and the Preference Ball were the highlights of the week. At the dance Jeff Keates was named mos t preferred man, Holly Evans was named Miss Personality, Mary Francis Elwood as Woman of the Year, and Robyn Timoney as most talented. Kathy Bicknell turned her past title of AWS president over to the newly elected president Debbie Manning. Engineering W eek carried out its th eme of "to improve th e quality of life" during th e week of F eb. 22-26. Th e week was highlighted b y exhibits, tours, design competitions, a banquet, and th e election of an Engineering queen and attendants. A bridge building contest to test th e strength of a bridge was won by Ken Hazelbaker, Abbas Golshani, and Lynn Zollinger, and there was also an optical transmission contest held. The qu een contest was informal with th e judging and voting of contestants held in th e foyer of the Engineerin g building. Debbie Foster was named queen with Cath y Jipson and Kath y Fugal as attendants. A tape featuring the well known engineer Simon Kamo was shown to engineers the followin g Monday of Engineering W eek. The week itself informed students of th e capabilities and potential of th e Engineering College.

Spectrum Dedication The newly built multi-purpose center was dedicated February 26, 1971, and named the Spectrum. The center was built to house athletic events, speakers, concerts, etc. Marion D. Hanks, coordinator of the LDS Student Association was the dedicatory speaker. The center was completed early and basketball games were housed there in December. "VeIl known speakers and famed concert performers have and will be presented in the new building. Concluding the dedicatory speech, the concert pianist was Roger Williams. Selections ranging from "Autumn Leaves" to "Born Free" to the modern "Love Story" were a few of the many pieces which successfully captivated the audience .

ATE WILLIAMS, a stalky 6'5" forward, rushed to a double figure average of 17.5 for the season. He also came through with 198 rebounds . Then there was the U. of U. game where it seemed like he couldn't do anything wrong, rolling 30 points to his credit along with 13 rebounds. LAFAYETTE LOVE moved into the varsity game with confidence and along with him came some antics . The character averaged ten points along with 6.6 rebounds per game.

ROBERTS ended this year at U.S.U. with a 20.8 mÂˇerage. As our leadin g scorer, with 499 points, and our leadin g rebounder, with 284 rebounds, he left the Aggies with good memories. This All-Am eri can basketball player left Utah State to jump into th e world of professional basketball with th e Detroit Pistons. Behind him h e left innumerable records and statisti cs that won't be forgo tten in the years to come. BOB LAURISKI made the transition from freshman basketball to Varsity in fine style, averaging in th e double figures of 12.5. His 6'7" frame was valuable in achieving his 211 rebounds for th e season.

Half-time entertainment varied greatly this season. The Aggiettes performed a number of times, the U.S.U. folkdancers performed, little league teams, and then there was .... ARNY!

COACH LA DELL A DERSON ended his tenth season with the Aggics by being chosen as the "Coach of the Year" for NCAA District Seven. He is the only U.S.U. basketball coach to take our team to the NCAA tournament more than once.

JEFF TEBBS, standing below the giants of the basketball world, at 5'11" was chosen as the "Most Valuable Player of the All-College Tourney." Unfortunately he had to sit out four games while nursing an eye injury received in the U. of U. game. It wasn't much later when he received a broken jaw in a "slight misunderstanding" during the New Mexico State game. Although plagued with injuries he flourish ed to a total of 142 points for the season, along with 40 rebounds .

Thump' em on the side of the head! Aggie spirit was high this year. The enthusiastic Aggie fans came out in full forc e and they practically fill ed the "Spectrum" every game. The cheerleaders and pep band spearheaded this enthusiasm. The Aggies had a lot to cheer about this year.

One of the outstanding features of the Aggie Team was their superior substituting ability. Two men that could come off the bench and fight were Ron Hatch, and Terry Wakefield, both averaged 8.6 points per game. Ron Hatch, Super-sub, had 78 free throws and chalked up 84 rebounds. They helped to make the Aggie team what they were.

Once again COACH "DUTCH" BELNAP shaped a team out of outstandin g individuals from different high schools all over the country. The RAM BLERS with a 15-5 win-loss record proved to b e one of the most outstanding freshman teams to develop at Utah State. Four players averaged in the double fi gures. Th e crowd pleaser Glen Hansen lead his teammates with a 21.9 average . The 6'8" forward , Jim Boatwright averaged 17.7 pOints and h e lead in rebounds with 255 for the season . Gary Ericks on averaged 17.6 per game. Once again th e Aggies can say, "Wait until next year! " and "Watch Out!! "

Bob Carlson, third-year coach of the Aggie Wrestling Squad led a young, talented, and enthusiastic team against Idaho State, BYU, Air Force, and a host of other schools. The Matmen were led by co-captains Sam Bessinger and Gary Lindley, with the remaining squad consisting of retmning lettermen Doug Gemin, Glen Logan, Bob Clements, Tom Janesky, Cmtis Hermiesen, and Jack Staub, plus an outstanding group of newcomers. The Matmen had ten of 17 dual meets at home in their new arena the Spectrum which housed for the first time one of the finest squads from USU in the past five years.

"Crucible", play by Arthur Miller, was a sardonic picture of a period in the United States history when hysteria swept th e country over witchcraft practices.

American Indian Week The forgotten Americans spoke up during Spring Quarter. April 12th through the 16th the American Indians adopted the theme "We Talk, You Listen." The week included a panel from the Intermountain Indian School, a discussion by Bob Bennett the excommissioner of Indian Affairs, panel discussion from an Alcatraz group ( including a documentary on Alcatraz.) There was also lectures by Scott Momaday, Peter McDonald (Navajo Tribal Chairman,) ancI a number of Indian dances.

Robins' Awards

Born in tragedy, the Robins' Awards are the most coveted of all campus honors and the Award night is always the year's most gala event. The Awards memorialize the name of William E. Robins, a former studentbody president at USU who was one of those rare student leaders who had the ability to project his own vision and make it the vision of the campus. The USU Union was one of the items he dreamed about. In 1954 young Robins and his wife, Geraldine, took off in a light plane for a trip to Denver, where Bill was scheduled to attend a convention. As th e plane came in for a landing at the Denver Airport something went wrong and the plane crashed. Both Bill and his wife were killed. Behind them they left an orphaned year old son, prompting the members of Sigma Nu Fraternity - in which Bill Robins was a member - to found the Bill Robins Memorial Fund to raise money that would provide a scholarship for

the boy when he was old enough to enroll in the university. But two years later the tragedy of the Robins family was compounded when the small boy was fatally stricken with leukemia. Since then, the Fund has been used to provide scholarships for worthy students. Six years ago AWS joined Sigma Nu as co-sponsors of this event and now it is the climax of Mother's Weekend. The process for selecting the award winners is long and scrupulously conducted. Every segment of the campus is called upon to participate. Over eighty organizations are asked to make nominations. An eliminating committee (composed of delegates from the student senate, faculty association, inter-residence council, and independent students association) select the nominees for six of the 12 categories, while special committees determine the finalists for the awards for the scholar, athlete, talent and alumnus of the year.

Black Emphasis Week "The Black Experience in America" was brought to the campus during the third week of March. Starting the week was a Black fash ion show featuring a demonstration of African fashion and current fashion being provided by Ajaibo Waldren, a New York fash ion coordinator. Also included were black dances, gospel singing and an oration. James Farmer spoke concerning "The Black Revolution" to the public on Wednesday. Farmer was the former assistant secretary of the department of Health, Education, and Welfare, and a founder and former director of CORE ( Congress of Racial Equality). Other forum meetings held by the students were held during the week. Movies and discussions fully emphasized the importance of black equality'. Concluding the week's activities was a dance by the Hot Buttered Soul. Black Emphasis Week was one of the most successful movements on campus to educate the students as to what the minority groups of the country require and need. Before understanding must come knowledge.

'!rack Team The USU thinclads under Coach Maughan have broken several USU records. Mike Mercer, Mark Bingham, and Jeff Marston, are a few of the Utag assets in competition with such schools as Brigham Young, Wyoming, Idaho State, Ricks College, Montana, CSI, and Eastern Utah.

Utah State golf team had a twenty match golf schedule this year with a highlight trip to Hawaii over March 19 to March 28. Returning lettermen Ken Clark, Mike Mooney and Danny Roskelly led the Aggie crew, although freshmen Jim Packard and Brad Andersen were other top golfers. Red Cross held their semi-annual blood drive at USU with many concerned students donating their blood.

Health Physical Education and Recreation Dedication Dedication of the new P.E. Building was held during the later part of Spring Quarter. In spite of the delay, some classrooms and facilities have been in use for several months. However, the new structural addition to the USU campus has not been completed. The final stage which will house the swimming pools is not even under construction, because of budget cuts and lack of appropriated funds.

Intramurals Intramurals, DC Games tournament, inspired competition, rivalry, and involvement. Sportsmanship and friendship ensued through the tournaments.

Greek Week Greek Week under the theme, "Naturally Greek," began with a forum in the sunburst lounge and a dance that night featuring Hot Buttered Soul. The week's activities included a Greek Bowl, Presidential Banquet, and final touches for swing sing and the Greek Olympics. The week was highlighted by the torch lighting ceremony followed by swing sing and the Greek Olympics in the Spectrum.

Mother's Weekend Each year one weekend is dedicated to the mothers of USU coeds . The weekend includes a two-n ight stay in the girls' housing, a bridal show, a fashion show, a banquet, and a talent show. The weekend stay is climaxed by Robin's Awards on Saturday night, which is sponsored by AWS and Sigma Nu.

Freshman Week The Freshman Class were the sponsors of Kenny Rogers and the First Edition concert. Their week of activities included Powder Puff football, nickel flicks, the Hour Glass, and a dance. The UC Bowl was opened to freshmen during the week of activities.

Side by side the dorms overlooked the campus, a challenge to those who venture there. Infamous cafeteria food , parking tickets, student assistants, quiet hours, and cold - all are the making or the breaking of the student. The Uintah Basin Center For Continuing Education is an extension of Utah State University which offers opportunities for higher learning to Uintah Basin residents. The perman ency of the institution depends upon its success. Under the direction of Mr. D. C. Purnell, acting coordinator of the center, a wide variety of classes are organized to fill th e needs and desires of those seeking an education. At present classes are held in the school facilities of the Duches ne and U intah county school districts. Classes are taught by resident professors and also professors who are flown into the area from Utah State University. Both upper and lower division classes are offered at the center. Opportunities are given to many youth who cannot afford to go outside the Basin to school and many parents also have opportunities for higher education and thus better vocations. Students also have social opportunities through dances, activities, and the atmosphere which exists here. With the continued support of the Uintah Basin residents and UBCCE will grow and improve. With the growth of this institution the basin itself will be developed in many facets, and bring out the true potential of th e area and its people. The overall aim of th e UBCCE, its leaders, and its students is progress through higher education.
