Taekwondo, the Korean Martial Art, and Its Relationship to Japanese Karate
The Korean martial art/sport of Taekwondo is very distinctive, but it is also homologous to Japanese Karate even though not everyone is eager to accept this relationship. I believe it is important for Taekwondo practitioners to know the real history of their beloved martial art and to not feel distress if its relationship to Karate is pointed out. On the contrary, it should be a point of pride.

Passing the Legacy Forward
Reflecting on almost 60 years in the martial arts, I am filled with joy, gratitude, optimism, and amazement. I don’t think I ever sought the “meaning of life,” to the contrary, I sought to “give life meaning”; moreover, to share this with others.

Common Threads
Chang Hon Taekwon-Do and WT Taekwondo
Martial arts training is an inherently risky endeavor, but there are many things school owners and instructors have at their disposal to mitigate these risks to create a safe environment for students and to be prepared in case of injury, accident, or health crisis. Many of these are common-sense measures that can be easily implemented. Other procedures will involve training of staff and specialized equipment and strategies.

Master Yoon Byung-In’s Legacy: The Changmoo-Kwan and Kangduk-Won

From the Editor

Welcome to the May 2024 edition of HOONLYUN, the Journal of the United States Taekwondo Alliance.
This is our 12th edition and we are so thrilled that the Taekwondo community has embraced this publication. This gives us the energy, motivation, and catalyst to keep providing you with cultural, academic, and practical information for your martial arts enlightenment.
Our feature article in this edition contains reflections from Grandmaster Jon Wiedenman on his life and training in Chang Moo Kwan first with Grandmaster Dae Woong Chung and then with Supreme Grandmaster Nam Suk Lee. Grandmaster Wiedenman gives insights into his almost 60 years of training and life experience with joy and gratitude.
Also in this edition, you will find an examination of the relationship between Taekwondo and Japanese Karate by Master Alberto Borjas as well as an exploration of the common techniques between Ch’ang Hon (ITF) TaekwonDo and Kukkiwon (WT) Taekwondo by Master Stuart Anslow. Master Robert McLain exhibits and outlines the lineage of the Chang Moo Kwan and Kang Duk Won schools from the original Seoul Jung Ang YMCA Kwon Beop Bu club founded by Yoon, Byung-In; and Grandmaster Philip Ameris provides some supplemental fitness techniques to enhance your Taekwondo training. Finally, we proffer a scholarly paper from the president of iACT (the International Academic Center for Taekwondo) Dr. Ron Dziwenka on how the internalization of practice becomes intuition in training paradigms.
And once again we present our expanded USTA Affiliate School News and recipe feature for a cool summer Korean noodle dish.
Please contact us if you would like to submit a contribution for future issues of this valuable publication. We here at HOONLYUN hope to continue providing inspiration to keep you on your training path and to widen your Taekwondo horizons.
Best wishes for your continued health and well-being.
Respectfully,
Mary Sudul, 4th Dan Editor-in-Chief

From the Publisher

Welcome to Volume VI/No. 2 of HOONLYUN: The Journal of the United States Taekwondo Alliance.
Those of you who have become avid readers of HOONLYUN, may notice that this issue is missing two standard components; one being the book review, and the other, the student’s perspective. Why is this? Simply put, the wealth and length of the far-ranging literary contributions appearing in this volume cried out for space; more acreage to feed the mind. The most significant of these is an in-depth interview with Grandmaster Jon Wiedenman, 9th Dan and disciple of Chang Moo Kwan founder, Nam Suk Lee. Their relationship is one that spanned decades and here you will receive a full dose of that experience.
In addition, we are delighted to present an article authored by 7th Dan, and iACT president, Dr. Ron Dziwenka spotlighting a concept that I personally have been exploring as of late—the concept of training versus practice.
Moreover, we include pieces by authors who have appeared frequently in past issues of HOONLYUN. We welcome again, Master Stuart Anslow, publisher of Totally TaeKwonDo magazine, Grandmaster Philip Ameris, senior student of Grandmaster Hee Il Cho, and Master Alberto Borjas and Master Robert McClain, both disciples of Grandmaster Pyong Soo Kim. We are honored beyond measure to have such illustrious scholarship fill our pages.
But this publication, released twice a year, is not about any one individual; it is a representation of the academic and technical knowledge offered up by the collective efforts of the global Taekwondo community at large, unhindered by paid commercial advertising, relying instead for its survival through the dollars and dedication of its readers. If you feel that this beautifully-edited, full-color, hard-copy journal is of value, please alert your colleagues to the existence of HOONLYUN and invite them to visit our web sites at www.hoonlyun.com and www.ustaweb.com where this edition and past issues may be purchased.
Thank you for your ongoing support of HOONLYUN. With your help we look forward to disseminating the multitude of perspectives that define Taekwondo, in tandem with the rich heritage of Korea, for many years to come.
To all our readers, on my behalf and that of my late teacher and founder of the USTA, Grandmaster Rhin Moon Richard Chun, stay safe, be well, and train hard.

ABOUT THE UNITED STATES TAEKWONDO ALLIANCE
The United States Taekwondo Alliance was founded in 2023 by Grandmaster Doug Cook, 8th Dan, and a senior student of the late Grandmaster Rhin Moon Richard Chun. As successor to the United States Taekwondo Association established in 1980 by Grandmaster Chun, the mission of the United States Taekwondo Alliance is to promote excellence in the traditional and evolving art of Taekwondo. While continuing to promote the legacy of Chun Kwanjangnim, the organization actively inserts its own contributions into the great chain of martial wisdom, focusing on the art of Taekwondo rather than the sport, consciously viewing the discipline as a Way of Life.
With affiliate schools across America, the USTA faithfully maintains traditional technique and Korean martial arts doctrine by hosting educational seminars, online and in-dojang classes, a comprehensive standardized curriculum, certification across a number of levels, cultural and training tours to Korea, and through HOONLYUN: The Journal of the United States Taekwondo Alliance (www.hoonlyun.com).
