WELCOME SOUTH RESIDENTS Welcome to your new home in South Residential College! We are incredibly excited to welcome you onto campus as an official member of the Trojan Family! We hope you are looking forward to your transition and excited about meeting and living among 800 of your peers. We know you’ll love the vibrant, prideful and scholarly living-learning community South residents have fostered over the years. Through offering you diverse programming opportunities and faculty and staff support, we’re confident that you’ll feel at home in no time!

SOUTH RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE History Opened as a residential college in 2012, the South Residential College includes four traditional-style residence halls: Marks Tower, Pardee Tower, Marks Hall and Trojan Hall. South Residential College is conveniently located near the Doheny & Leavey Libraries, Tutor Campus Center, important campus service departments, several popular classroom buildings, and McCarthy Quad, a great place to relax and enjoy great Los Angeles weather. A signature of this residential area is its close-knit community; many describe South as being a true “family.”
Special Interest floors in the South Residential College include the Great Outdoors (GO) Floor, which provides programming for students interested in hiking, surfing and other outdoor adventures; and the Business Floor, which exists to invest in the academic, social and professional development of students interested in careers in the business world.
CARDINAL & GOLD EVENTS Cardinal & Gold events take place every Friday and Saturday night and are free to all residential students. There are activities and outings for every interest – from feature film screenings in McCarthy Quad to evening hikes in Griffith Park to concerts at LA Live. Be on the lookout for the weekly schedule of events in the Fall!

Jasmine Knighten
Residential College Coordinator
Jasmine Knighten completed her master’s in education with an emphasis in student affairs and organizational leadership at University of the Pacific, where she also served as a residence director. There, she also worked with the men’s basketball team as an athletic mentor and served as the advisor for NUFP. She received her BA in business from Cal State Fullerton, where she was a resident advisor, peer mentor, NUFP, campus tour guide and recruitment ambassador. NUFP allowed her to see all that the field of student affairs had to offer and helped solidify her love for helping students as well as supporting students throughout their leadership journey. In her free time, she enjoys traveling anywhere and everywhere, and would love to go to every continent and every state to take pictures of the scenery and monuments. She loves hanging out with friends and family, listening to music, and hosting game nights.
Amanda “AJ” Volk is serving as a Graduate Residential College Coordinator for South Residential College and is pursuing her Doctorate of Physical Therapy at USC. She was born and raised on Vancouver Island on the West Coast of British Columbia, Canada. She completed her post-secondary education at Saint Joseph’s College (Go Pumas!) in Indiana while continuing her passion for soccer. This past year AJ graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, while also working as an RA for two years. This will be AJ’s first year as a GRCC and she is excited to be working with freshmen and helping them transition into their college life as a Trojan. She is looking forward to meeting you all!

Derek Murakami

Derek Murakami oversees the North Area (consisting of New North Residential College and Birnkrant Residential College) and South Residential College (consisting of Marks Tower, Pardee Tower, Marks Hall and Trojan Hall). Born and raised in Southern California, Derek attended Colorado State University where he earned his bachelor’s in social work and master’s in student affairs in higher education. He served three years as a resident director at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, three years as a residence director at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL, and the fall 2016 semester as resident director for Semester at Sea, which traveled to 12 different countries and 13 cities. Derek has developed a passion for LGBTQIA equity, and social justice and cultural competency education, especially focused on support of Asian Pacific Islander and Desi American student populations. He is excited to return to Southern California, particularly for all the great food, and to be at an institution where he can cheer on competitive athletic sports teams.

Tim Biblarz

Benjamin Graham
Tim Biblarz serves as chair of the Dornsife Department of Sociology, and has served as director of graduate studies, department chair, and president of Dornsife’s Faculty Council. Biblarz’s teaching and research explores causes and consequences of social inequalities in the United States over time, with an emphasis on the diversification of family life and intergenerational relationships. His articles have focused on how new family forms have influenced children’s experiences of upward mobility, how changing gender role attitudes have affected intimate relationships, and how the sexual orientations of parents have mattered (or not) for children’s wellbeing. Biblarz has published in the American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, Social Forces, and other journals, and is co-author of “How Families Still Matter” (Cambridge University Press). He has received honors for his teaching and research, including USC’s General Education Teaching Award, and two Best Article awards from the American Sociological Association.
Benjamin Graham is faculty in residence in Trojan Hall, where he lives with his wife, Lynn Ta, and their three young sons. He is also an assistant professor of international relations and the co-founder of the Security and Political Economy (SPEC) Lab. After graduating from Dartmouth College, he served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Turkmenistan, and he and his wife, Lynn, led a Habitat for Humanity build in Chile in 2008. Graham received his PhD in political science at UC San Diego, and he has research projects ongoing in the Philippines, in Georgia (the country), and (less exciting, but still surprisingly awesome) in the basement of the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. When he’s not working, Graham likes to hike, bike, ski, climb, and play soccer – and just hang out with his family

Myka Winder Pardee Tower
Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy
Myka Winder, OTD, OTR/L is a faculty in residence in Pardee Tower in the South Residential College. She teaches courses in neuroscience, quantitative research and evidence-based practice, medical terminology, and history. Winder attended USC for her undergraduate and graduate degrees and has graduated from USC three times. As a loyal South alumna, she lived in Pardee Tower during her freshman year, studying neuroscience and English as double majors. As a clinician at the USC Occupational Therapy Faculty Practice, she primarily works with college students on lifestyle management, including time and stress management. She enjoys living and working with college students in the residential college and in her faculty position. Winder brings in fellow USC alumni as guests to South Area’s Tuesday Nights with the Faculty dinner series to discuss their paths after graduating from USC, and she enjoys taking students on outings in Los Angeles, the place where she has lived the longest.

GET INVOLVED WITH RESIDENTIAL STUDENT GOVERNMENT Residential Student Government serves all students who live in University housing by enhancing their residential experience at USC. RSG consists of representatives from each Residential College, making up six boards: President, Advocacy, Community Outreach, Funding, Programming, Social Justice & Inclusion. One of the largest organizations on campus, RSG is a voice to build community, empower residents and promote leadership development.
