Cardinal & Gold events take place every Thursday and Friday night and are free to all residential students. There are activities and outings for every interest — from feature film screenings in McCarthy Quad to evening hikes in Griffith Park to concerts at LA Live. We are incredibly excited to welcome you to West Residential College. We hope you are looking forward to your transition and excited about meeting and living among 650 of your peers. We know you’ll love the vibrant, prideful and scholarly living-learning community Fluor and Webb Tower residents have fostered over the years. Through offering you diverse programming opportunities and faculty and staff support, we’re confident that you’ll feel at home in no time! HISTORY AND CULTURE
West Residential College, comprised of Fluor Tower and Webb Tower, is conveniently located near the Student Health Center, Café 84, the Lyon Recreation Center, and the McDonald’s Swimming Pool. As such, West Residential College has begun to develop various wellness-based initiatives. Residential Faculty focus on different aspects of holistic wellness and hope to create all-encompassing programming around these initiatives. West Residential College is supported by a dynamic team of faculty and staff who endeavor to create a vibrant community where diversity is celebrated and living-learning opportunities abound.

MEET THE FACULTY & STAFF OF WEST Faculty in Residence serve as your mentors, advisers, and advocates. They facilitate and lead the academic focus, in partnership with the Residential Education staff, for your living-learning community. Residential Education staff work to support your holistic development and success at USC. They directly supervise your resident assistants, develop community through programming, resolve conflict through mediation, and serve as resources for residents.
STANLEY HUEY JR. FACULTY IN RESIDENCE
CARLA DELLA GATTA FACULTY IN RESIDENCE
Huey is an associate professor of psychology at USC, with a joint appointment in American Studies and Ethnicity. He received his PhD in clinical psychology in 1998, and joined the USC faculty in 2000. His research focuses on psychotherapy effects with children and families, cultural issues in psychotherapy, and interventions in criminal justice settings. He teaches courses addressing mental health, therapy, and diversity. As a licensed clinical psychologist, Huey has extensive experience treating trauma victims and youth with behavioral problems. Huey is married to fellow clinical psychologist, Tonya Wood, director of clinical training at Pepperdine University, and is the proud father of 6-year-old Ethan.
Della Gatta, an assistant professor of critical studies, has published essays in collected editions and in journals, and she has dramaturged professionally. She was the lead translator for a play from Spanish to English for the Mellon-funded cultural mobility initiative, The Cardenio Project, and has worked as a scholar for the theatre for Chicago Shakespeare Theater and Victory Gardens Theater. Her dissertation explored how Latino culture is constructed dramaturgically and textually in recent Shakespearean adaptations and productions. Her research areas include early modern drama and theatre history, the history of Shakespearean performance, Latinx Theatre, Spanish Golden Age theatre, adaptation theory, gender and sexuality studies, postcolonial feminisms, and critical race theory.
D’ANDRE COATS RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE COORDINATOR Coats is originally from Chicago, and he earned his BS in elementary education and MA in higher education and student affairs from Taylor University. As a first generation college student, he is passionate about access and equity within higher education, with research interests that include racial and gender identity development. A devoted Shonda Rhimes fan, Coats never misses an episode of any of her fantastic shows. You might find him enjoying a night in with friends and a good board game, or cheering on the Chicago Bulls.
BECCA CALVILLO GRADUATE RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE COORDINATOR Calvillo is pursuing her master’s in postsecondary administration and student affairs at USC Rossier School of Education. Originally from the south suburbs of Chicago, she has her bachelor’s in English with a minor in classical civilization from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. As an undergraduate, Calvillo was a student alumni ambassador and involved in student theater. She worked professionally in residential education as a resident counselor and area coordinator at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, a residential high school for gifted and talented students in STEM. There, she developed a passion for working with students in leadership education and service learning.

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
The West Faculty in Residence host semi-regular programs for residents that incorporate many aspects of wellness. Through distinguished speakers, events and trips, students are offered the opportunity to investigate wellness and how to integrate it into their daily lives. Past programs include cooking demonstrations, yoga, faculty meet-and-greets, speakers from student affairs, Google Inc. Executives and movie trips.
Once a month, residents gather in one of the Faculty in Residence’s apartments for a study break by way of an ice cream sundae. These casual, come-and-go type of event allows residents to engage with faculty members and other students.
At this annual tradition, the Latinx floor, El Sol Y La Luna, hosts local elementary school children to educate them on Latino culture as well as this celebrated event. The children get the chance to learn about college as well as Dia De Los Muertos, and engage in arts and crafts.
WEST OSCARS VIEWING PARTY
During the Academy Awards Season, West residents, faculty, and staff gather to cast votes, take “Oscar Selfies” and dress to impress for the annual West Oscars Viewing Party. Instead of making the trek to Dolby Theater, the West community makes their own party with good food and a good crowd spectating on the awards festivities.
SOMERVILLE RETREAT
Somerville Place is a residential community at USC with an aim to foster an understanding of and respect for Black culture, while cultivating a sense of family and community. Every year during move-in weekend, the Center for Black Cultural and Student Affairs and the RA for Somerville Place plan a retreat to establish and share the floor’s vision and aim for the year. Additionally, this time is utilized for bonding amongst the floor residents.
GET INVOLVED! RESIDENTIAL HOUSING ASSOCIATION (RHA)
Founded in 1988, Residential Housing Association (RHA) serves all students who live in USC Housing by providing them with ways to enhance and contribute to their residential experience at the University of Southern California. One of the largest organizations on campus, RHA strives to build community, empower residents, and create opportunities for academic success and leadership development. RHA acts as a resource by coordinating and promoting all phases of student development and self-government, while representing the residential community on both regional and national levels. Do you want to gain valuable leadership experience while making lasting friendships, planning events, and serving as a resource to your fellow residents? Consider joining Community Council! Community Councils are responsible for a wide variety of fun, social, and engaging programs throughout the academic year for their individual communities. Student leaders are elected or appointed into their Community Council by their peers. Community Council members represent their residents at Residential Housing Association (RHA) meetings and gain valuable leadership experience!
