Cardinal & Gold events take place every Thursday and Friday night and are free to all residential students. There are activities and outings for every interest — from feature film screenings in McCarthy Quad to evening hikes in Griffith Park to concerts at LA Live. Through offering you diverse programming opportunities and faculty and staff support, we’re confident that you’ll feel at home in no time! HISTORY AND CULTURE
Opened as a residential college in 2012, the South Residential College includes four traditional-style residence halls: Marks Tower, Pardee Tower, Marks Hall and Trojan Hall. South Residential College is conveniently located near the Doheny & Leavey Libraries, Tutor Campus Center, important campus service departments, several popular classroom buildings, and McCarthy Quad, a great place to relax and enjoy great Los Angeles weather. A signature of this residential area is its close-knit community; many describe South as being a true “family.” Special Interest floors in the South Residential College include the Great Outdoors (GO) Floor, which provides programming for students interested in hiking, surfing and other outdoor adventures; and the Business Floor, which exists to invest in the academic, social and professional development of students interested in careers in the business world.

MEET THE FACULTY & STAFF OF SOUTH Faculty in Residence serve as your mentors, advisers, and advocates. They facilitate and lead the academic focus, in partnership with the Residential Education staff, for your living-learning community. Residential Education staff work to support your holistic development and success at USC. They directly supervise your resident assistants, develop community through programming, resolve conflict through mediation, and serve as resources for residents.
TIM BIBLARZ FACULTY IN RESIDENCE
MYKA WINDER FACULTY IN RESIDENCE
Biblarz is associate professor of sociology and gender studies and chair of the USC Dornsife department of sociology. His teaching and research explores causes and consequences of social inequalities in the U.S. over time, with an emphasis on the diversification of family life and intergenerational relationships. His work has focused on new family forms and upward mobility, gender role attitudes in intimate relationships, and parent sexual orientation and children’s wellbeing. Biblarz’s favorite part of his job is mentoring students in their pursuit of their own best visions of themselves. When not tooling around on one of his six Kindles late at night, he can be found helping his own college kids with their homework, or estimating models on survey data with a hot cup of one of his favorite Seattle coffees nearby.
Winder is an assistant professor of clinical occupational therapy in the Mrs. T.H. Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy. She teaches courses in neuroscience, quantitative research and evidencebased practice, medical terminology, and history. Winder attended USC for her undergraduate and graduate degrees and has graduated from USC three times, and lived in Pardee Tower as a freshman double majoring in neuroscience and English. Winder primarily works with college students on lifestyle management, including time and stress management. She often brings fellow USC alumni to South’s faculty dinner series to discuss their paths after graduating from USC, and she enjoys taking students on outings in Los Angeles, the place where she has lived the longest.

JASMINE KNIGHTEN RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE COORDINATOR
ANDREA VALENZUELA RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE COORDINATOR
West is Wilford and Daris Zinsmeyer Early Career Chair in Marine Studies and an associate professor of earth sciences in USC Dornsife. His research focuses on how atmospheric CO2, global climate, and life have evolved over the millions of years of Earth’s history. He works to understand how erosional processes at the Earth’s surface shape the environment that sustains life while simultaneously generating deadly natural hazards. He earned his bachelor’s degree in geology and geophysics from Yale University, and both master’s in geography and PhD in earth sciences from University of Cambridge. West teaches and leads research groups with USC undergraduate, graduate and postdoc scholars and considers his work with students one of the most inspiring aspects of his career.
Knighten completed her master’s degree in education with an emphasis in student affairs and organizational leadership at University of the Pacific, where she also served as a residence director. While there, she worked with the men’s basketball team as an athletic mentor and served as the advisor for the NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program. She received a bachelor’s in business from Cal State Fullerton, where she served as a resident advisor, peer mentor, campus tour guide and recruitment ambassador. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, taking pictures of scenery and monuments, hanging out with friends and family, listening to music, and hosting game nights.
Valenzuela is from East Los Angeles, and received her BA in Latin American Iberian Studies with a Black Studies minor from UC Santa Barbara. She earned her master’s in postsecondary administration and student affairs from USC Rossier. As a first-generation college student, she’s passionate about issues of access and retention in higher education, social justice education, and serving her community. Most recently, she served as an English teaching assistant in the small city of Tulancingo in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico on a Fulbright grant, promoting higher education to first-generation, low-income Mexican students.

COOKING AND CRAFTING WITH CHRISSY
Every Tuesday, the faculty bring in guest speakers to educate the students on topics ranging from playing collegiate sports at a Division I institution, to marketing and branding oneself in the business industry. Some featured guest lecturers have included USC Provost Michael Quick and USC football, Adoree Jackson and Cody Kessler. These dinners are free and feature food from local eateries.
South residents partner with USCs Joint Educational Project (JEP) to gain hands-on experience volunteering in community classrooms and shaping kids’ lives. Faculty in Residence hold monthly reflections for the residents through the experience.
Faculty in Residence Tim Biblarz and wife, Chrissy, invite students into their home to learn how to make various treats and crafts. Students receive the materials necessary to bake and craft while connecting with faculty in their homes.
JOSHUA TREE
GRAMMY MUSEUM VISIT
On this annual trip to Joshua Tree National Park, residents enjoy the starlit sky, vast hiking trails through the desert terrain, and immerse themselves in the vibrant history and culture of Joshua Tree. The program also allows for students to gain knowledge in various educational topics ranging from ecological conservation to indigenous plant and wildlife identification. Transportation and food provided to students who sign up in advance.
Residents visit the Grammy Museum to explore and interact with the exhibits, learn more about music and the Grammy’s, and bond with fellow South residents.
SOUTHCHELLA
This de-stress event for residents focuses on health and wellness around the time of Southern California’s popular music festival, Coachella. Students receive Southchella shirts, participate in DIY crafts like making flower crowns and planting succulents, and enjoy music by a local DJ.
GET INVOLVED! RESIDENTIAL HOUSING ASSOCIATION (RHA)
Founded in 1988, Residential Housing Association (RHA) serves all students who live in USC Housing by providing them with ways to enhance and contribute to their residential experience at the University of Southern California. One of the largest organizations on campus, RHA strives to build community, empower residents, and create opportunities for academic success and leadership development. RHA acts as a resource by coordinating and promoting all phases of student development and self-government, while representing the residential community on both regional and national levels. Do you want to gain valuable leadership experience while making lasting friendships, planning events, and serving as a resource to your fellow residents? Consider joining Community Council! Community Councils are responsible for a wide variety of fun, social, and engaging programs throughout the academic year for their individual communities. Student leaders are elected or appointed into their Community Council by their peers. Community Council members represent their residents at Residential Housing Association (RHA) meetings and gain valuable leadership experience!
