CARDINAL & GOLD EVENTS
Cardinal & Gold events take place every Thursday and Friday night and are free to all residential students. There are activities and outings for every interest — from feature film screenings in McCarthy Quad to evening hikes in Griffith Park to concerts at LA Live. Be on the lookout for the weekly schedule of events in the Fall!

We know you’ll love the vibrant and prideful living-learning community New North residents have fostered over the years. Through offering you diverse programming opportunities, faculty and staff support, and a premium location on campus, we’re confident that you’ll feel at home in no time! HISTORY AND CULTURE
New North Residential College, originally called North Residential College, was founded in 1993 and consisted of EVK, College, University, and Harris Halls. In 1997, New Residential College (consisting of just EVK and College Halls) was split off, and for the following 18 years, New and North were separate, each with their own Faculty Masters and programming. Considering that the student residents of New and North shared a common identity and common spaces, the four halls were merged into one Residential college, but retain the historic dual name, which students had long ago adopted: “New North.”

MEET THE FACULTY & STAFF OF NEW NORTH Faculty in Residence serve as your mentors, advisers, and advocates. They facilitate and lead the academic focus, in partnership with the Residential Education staff, for your living-learning community. Residential Education staff work to support your holistic development and success at USC. They directly supervise your resident assistants, develop community through programming, resolve conflict through mediation, and serve as resources for residents.
PHILIP ETHINGTON FACULTY IN RESIDENCE
AMBER BENNETT FACULTY IN RESIDENCE
Ethington is a professor of history, political science, and spatial science in the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. His recent work includes large-scale museum installations of geohistorical visualizations, an award-winning documentary film, and the development of software platforms for online multimedia publishing. Ethington lives on the south side of the New North Courtyard with his daughters and their dog Harvey, a very friendly and cute Dachshund-Poodle mix. He was raised in suburban Detroit by an engineer and patent attorney/ inventor, so he is also a craftsman who loves to build things. As an urbanist who has written about the social, cultural, political, economic, and geographic dimensions of Los Angeles, he is eager to introduce students to this great and diverse metropolis and leads several tours of different neighborhoods during the year.
Bennett is an occupational therapist and assistant professor of clinical occupational therapy. She also serves as academic advisor and assistant director of admissions for the occupational therapy programs. She earned her bachelor’s degree in recreation and leisure studies from San Jose State University, and her master’s and doctorate degrees in occupational therapy from USC. At Keck Hospital of USC, Bennett focuses on advancing occupational therapy practice in the continuum of care for patients with heart failure, and currently treats patients in acute, critical care and inpatient rehabilitation settings.
MICHAEL PALACIOZ RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE COORDINATOR
SIERRA BURTON GRADUATE RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE COORDINATOR
Palacioz comes to USC from the University of Arizona. He was born and raised in the central valley of California, but also lived in North Carolina during his high school years. He graduated from Marshall University with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and attended the University of Arizona, where he received his master’s degree in higher education. At the University of Arizona, Palacioz worked with students in multiple different theme communities and building populations, including freshmen and upperclassmen. As a first-generation college students, he was also able to connect with first-generation students and help them navigate different aspects of college life. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his dog, Cali, binge watching Netflix/Hulu, exploring the city, and finding ways to continue to play the alto sax.
Burton is a former NCAA Division 1 student-athlete who graduated from USC with a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience and honors in multimedia scholarship through media arts and practice from the USC School of Cinematic Arts. While a resident assistant, she developed a strong passion for student development and creating valuable experiences for students to help them achieve their academic, professional, and personal goals. She is currently pursuing a master’s in postsecondary administration and student affairs at USC. Burton loves all things USC; she has been a die-hard USC football fan since the days of Matt Leinart. When she isn’t at a game, she is active within the animal rights community as a vegan food photographer in the L.A. area. She enjoys photography, food adventures, trips to the beach, the Rich Roll podcast, and spending as much time as possible with her cat, Nala.
MORE ABOUT LIFE IN NEW NORTH ED WOOD FILM FESTIVAL
New North Residential College holds the annual Ed Wood Film Festival, organized by the Resident Assistants in the cinemathemed special interest living community and open to all residents of New North. Named after the filmmaker Ed Wood, students are challenged to make a film with an assigned theme and prop. The festival was born out of the idea that USC students could make a better film than Ed Wood in 24 hours. Ed Wood was a notorious filmmaker in the 1950s who was incredibly passionate about cinema but created some very bad films. Top films are shown at our annual film festival that includes celebrity judges, refreshments, and awards. Past judges have included Mark Hamill, Marlene Forte, and Fax Bahr. FABULOUS FRENCH FRY SUPPER CLUB
This event is sponsored and organized by one of the Faculty in Residence, Phil Ethington. On a bi-weekly basis, Phil brings in a guest lecturer to speak to students about a wide array of topics, including: co-curricular
involvement, college success, internships, career exploration, and more. Each dinner is catered by a local eatery and always includes home-made deep-fried French Fries!

NEW NORTH CASINO NIGHT
DOWNTOWN L.A. WALKING TOUR
Viva New North! This annual event takes place in the spring and is an opportunity for students to play fun card games, spend time with their peers, and earn gift cards and other prizes! The Harris Residential Hall common space is transformed into a hustling and bustling Vegas-inspired setting with authentic casino-style tables and festive decorations. The event is catered by a local eatery and features music, fun, and plenty of poker chips.
Students attending this free educational event can expect to travel into the heart of downtown L.A. to try new food, view historic landmarks, and visit L.A.’s famed locations like The Last Bookstore, Disney Concert Hall, Grand Central Market, and Olvera Street.
CINEMATIC SOUND LOUNGE
This event is intended to induce a full range of synesthesia! Students lay back, relax, and meditate to the sounds and spectacle of blockbuster film soundtracks and scores. There is an intermission that features food for attendees and a brief discussion
NEW NORTH ACADEMY AWARDS CELEBRATION
This annual event is coordinated by the Resident Assistants in the Cinema-themed special interest living community, but is open to all residents of New North. The red carpet is rolled out for the viewing of the Academy Awards ceremony, complete with a ballot competition, trivia, prizes, candy, and plenty of props. Students can take photos at the photo booth and enjoy freshly popped popcorn.
GET INVOLVED! RESIDENTIAL HOUSING ASSOCIATION (RHA)
Founded in 1988, Residential Housing Association (RHA) serves all students who live in USC Housing by providing them with ways to enhance and contribute to their residential experience at the University of Southern California. One of the largest organizations on campus, RHA strives to build community, empower residents, and create opportunities for academic success and leadership development. RHA acts as a resource by coordinating and promoting all phases of student development and self-government, while representing the residential community on both regional and national levels. Do you want to gain valuable leadership experience while making lasting friendships, planning events, and serving as a resource to your fellow residents? Consider joining Community Council! Community Councils are responsible for a wide variety of fun, social, and engaging programs throughout the academic year for their individual communities. Student leaders are elected or appointed into their Community Council by their peers. Community Council members represent their residents at Residential Housing Association (RHA) meetings and gain valuable leadership experience!
