CARDINAL & GOLD EVENTS
Cardinal & Gold events take place every Thursday and Friday night and are free to all residential students. There are activities and outings for every interest — from feature film screenings in McCarthy Quad to evening hikes in Griffith Park to concerts at LA Live. Be on the lookout for the weekly schedule of events in the Fall!

HISTORY AND CULTURE
Cale Residential College has a focus on global perspectives. Engage in the complexities of the world by immersing yourself in global exploration at USC. In Cale Residential College, you will build your intercultural competency and participate in critical dialogue regarding the ever-changing global landscape. Take part in partnerships with academic departments and resource centers that focus on international affairs, business, arts/culture, media, and current events. Discuss critical issues regarding the world’s refugee crisis, hunger, poverty, socio-political strife, and global citizenry. Students will emerge from this Residential College Experience as global citizens ready to make a positive impact on the world.

MEET THE FACULTY & STAFF OF CALE Faculty in Residence serve as your mentors, advisers, and advocates. They facilitate and lead the academic focus, in partnership with the Residential Education staff, for your living-learning community. Residential Education staff work to support your holistic development and success at USC. They directly supervise your resident assistants, develop community through programming, resolve conflict through mediation, and serve as resources for residents.
RUTH GIM CHUNG FACULTY IN RESIDENCE
GUSTAVO ORELLANA RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE COORDINATOR
Chung’s research interests are in cultural psychology and multicultural counseling, with focus on the acculturative process of Asian Americans and how it affects families and development of cultural identity in adolescents. She created a measure of acculturation (AAMAS) as well as intergenerational conflict (ICI) that are used widely in research on Asian Americans. She has published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology as well as Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, and at one time ranked fifth among most frequent contributors to the field of multicultural counseling. She also co-edited the book, “Sacred Spaces: Religion and Spirituality in Korean America,” published by University of Illinois Press. In terms of her pedagogical expertise, Chung specializes in teaching of statistics and research methodology in a meaningful and engaging manner to practitioners.
Originally from Concord in Northern California, Orellana attended UC Santa Barbara where he was a resident assistant for two years. After graduating with a degree in Chicano Studies, he worked professionally as an assistant resident director at UCSB for three years and as a resident director for the Academy of Art University for a year and a half. Orellana is passionate about educational policy and the effects it has on access and retention of first generation college students like himself. He enjoys being active at the gym, exploring new eateries, and spending time outdoors.
HAMSINI BALAJI GRADUATE RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE COORDINATOR Balaji is originally from India and has had the honor of living all around the world. She graduated from Mississippi State University with a bachelor’s in biochemistry. At USC, she is pursuing a master’s in social entrepreneurship from the Marshall School of Business. In her free time, you will find her at the local homeless shelter, tutoring center, animal shelter or any other volunteer event. She really enjoys cooking and baking with friends and family. You might also find her indulging in some kind of adventure activity or accidentally landing in a different country. Balaji’s passion is interacting and connecting with people from all walks of life, so come by and give her a high five.

TUESDAY’S TEA
A signature program series of the Faculty in Residence, residents are able to explore and learn about the different neighborhoods in L.A. surrounding the USC community, their history, culture and cuisine through mini excursions. For example, residents have explored Little Tokyo, Koreatown, Downtown L.A. and Olvera Street.
Tuesday’s Tea is a weekly event for all residents of the USC Village. Our Faculty in Residence host guest speakers that correlate with the theme of their Residential College. This allows all residents a chance to engage in a variety of topic areas. Tuesday’s Teas in the past have included speakers from the film industry, popular podcasters, a civil rights attorney, and a former international diplomat among others. Tuesday’s Teas always offer tea (of course), coffee, and light snacks.
STUDY ABROAD 101
In partnership with the USC Dornsife Office of Overseas Studies, residents have access to in-house information sessions at the USC Village where they are able to explore and learn about the different study abroad opportunities available to them.
THE SOPHOMORE SUCCESS SERIES
The Sophomore Success Series is a weeklong event that offers workshops, presentations, and interactive programming for our predominantly sophomore population. Events and workshops include topics such as financial literacy, internship seeking, time management, and even a chance to get a professionally done headshot.
B-REEL: VILLAGE DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE
During the spring semester, one full week is devoted to a documentary festival. Documentaries screened represent the themes of our Residential Colleges. The final night of B-REEL ends with an outdoor screening on our Great Lawn with food trucks and other fun activities. VACAY @ THE VILLAGE
Vacay @ the Village takes place during the spring and focuses on wellness with a spa-like ambience. Village residents participate and learn more about ways they can maintain wellness and well-being via yoga, eating tips, and relaxation activities. There are opportunities to sample healthy food options, make your own facials, and get your nails done!
GET INVOLVED! RESIDENTIAL HOUSING ASSOCIATION (RHA)
Founded in 1988, Residential Housing Association (RHA) serves all students who live in USC Housing by providing them with ways to enhance and contribute to their residential experience at the University of Southern California. One of the largest organizations on campus, RHA strives to build community, empower residents, and create opportunities for academic success and leadership development. RHA acts as a resource by coordinating and promoting all phases of student development and self-government, while representing the residential community on both regional and national levels. Do you want to gain valuable leadership experience while making lasting friendships, planning events, and serving as a resource to your fellow residents? Consider joining Community Council! Community Councils are responsible for a wide variety of fun, social, and engaging programs throughout the academic year for their individual communities. Student leaders are elected or appointed into their Community Council by their peers. Community Council members represent their residents at Residential Housing Association (RHA) meetings and gain valuable leadership experience!
