WELCOME PARKSIDE ARTS & HUMANITIES RESIDENTS Welcome to your new home in Parkside Arts and Humanities Residential College! We are incredibly excited to welcome you onto campus as an official member of the Trojan Family! We hope you are looking forward to your transition and excited about meeting and living among 450 of your peers. We know you’ll love the vibrant, prideful and scholarly living-learning community Parkside residents have fostered over the years. Through offering you diverse programming opportunities and faculty and staff support, we’re confident that you’ll feel at home in no time!

PARKSIDE ARTS & HUMANITIES RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE History On August 15, 2007, after nearly two years of construction at the cost $58 million, USC celebrated the opening of the Parkside Arts and Humanities Residential College (PRB) with marching band, balloons and banners. “Student residences aren’t just places to sleep anymore,” said Michael L. Jackson, Vice Provost of Student Affairs, at the ceremony. “They’re part of the educational program.” Precisely for these reasons, PRB was designed to create a space where students and faculty can form a strong scholarly community centered on the arts and humanities. Although intended for students of all disciplines, its theme allows for special interest floors dedicated to music, the visual arts, poetry and architecture. Living in Parkside Arts & Humanities Residential College is not limited to majors in the arts and humanities. Everyone who appreciates the role of culture and the exploration of ideas is welcome. Parkside Arts and Humanities is the newest building in USC’s residential education system – at least until the USC Village
opens in Fall 2017. Standing four stories tall and bordered by Exposition Boulevard, Watt Way and 37th Place, PRB is at the southwestern end of the University Park Campus, across from the Los Angeles Natural History Museum. Joining its two sister structures, Parkside International Residential College (IRC) and Parkside Apartments, to complete the Parkside community, PRB is home to 450 primarily freshmen residents and three Residential Faculty members and their families. Together, Residential Faculty and Residential Education staff work to develop programs for residents that maximizes their college experience and provides added layers of support. Residents live in suite-style apartments, amidst state-of-the-art study lounges, music study rooms, recreation room with ping-pong, foosball and air hockey tables, and a Performance Café, all designed in response to student requests for more shared space.
CARDINAL & GOLD EVENTS Cardinal & Gold events take place every Friday and Saturday night and are free to all residential students. There are activities and outings for every interest – from feature film screenings in McCarthy Quad to evening hikes in Griffith Park to concerts at LA Live. Be on the lookout for the weekly schedule of events in the Fall!

RESIDENTIAL STAFF & FACULTY Faculty in Residence
Brett Sheehan is a professor of Chinese history and director of USC’s East Asian Studies Center. He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1997 and has been at USC since 2006. Teaching Chinese history is actually his second career. He turned to academics after obtaining a degree in finance and spending six years working as a commercial banker. He researches and teaches Chinese and East Asian history, especially the history of business and capitalism. One of the highlights of his year is taking students to China to learn about globalization. For fun, he loves working out, hiking, playing board games, and hanging out with Parkside students. Look for him in the dining hall and join him for a meal if you like.

Malancha Gupta is an assistant professor in the Mork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at USC. She is from New York City and received her BS in chemical engineering from the Cooper Union in 2002, and her PhD in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2007. From 2007 to 2009, Gupta was a postdoctoral fellow in the department of chemistry and chemical biology at Harvard University. She has been teaching at USC since 2009, and her expertise is in polymer chemistry and surface science. She has co-authored 25 manuscripts and 3 patents in these topic areas and taught several classes, including Heat Transfer, Freshman Academy for Engineers, Viscous Flow, and Physical Properties of Polymers. Gupta has lived in Parkside Arts & Humanities since 2012 along with her husband, John Hennessy, an engineer who works at Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In their free time, David likes to cook, and Annie enjoys running half marathons and other local races.
Edwin Hill’s research seeks to highlight the marginalized intellectual and cultural dialogs of the black Atlantic diaspora that have taken place, and continue to take place, in France. Hill has published and/or presented on contemporary Caribbean writers, Sub-Saharan francophone literature, African-American popular music, French chanson, and francophone hip hop. Similarly, his teaching interests, while focused on black vernacular culture and France, extend from the poetry of Negritude writers to postcolonial explorations of contemporary francophone writers and musicians. Informed by an interdisciplinary formation (Bachelor Degree in Music Performance, PhD in French and Francophone Studies), Hill’s current book project, “Black Soundscapes White Stages,” relocates the marginalized voices of the black diaspora through the discursive matrix of French imperialism and the cultural history of the French West Indies. At USC, Hill created “Project Banlieue: French Peri/Urban Cultures and Crises” to promote interdisciplinary scholarship about the riots in France in 2005 and 2007.
Originally from New Jersey, Patty Lyczkowski earned her BA in psychology from Rutgers University-New Brunswick. While at Rutgers, she found and developed her passion for working with college students through new student orientation, residential life, first-year seminar, and academic tutoring. After graduation, Lyczkowski transitioned into the student affairs graduate program at Ball State University in Indiana with an assistantship in Housing and Residence Life, where she gained experience in admissions, international student services, community college affairs, and collegiate lobbying at state levels. Lyczkowski enjoys various components of her position at USC, including advising building government, resident assistant supervision and development, program planning, providing mentorship and guidance to residents, faculty collaboration and more. In her free time, she enjoys going to the beach, hiking, reading, watching hours of Netflix at a time, and spending time with her pup, Rory.
Jennifer Nguyen Ellingwood, who goes by Jenn, serves as the assistant director for the Parkside and West Residential Colleges, which include Parkside International Residential College, Parkside Arts and Humanities Residential College and West Residential College. Originally from Orange County, California, Ellingwood completed her undergraduate degree majoring in psychology and minoring in education studies at UCLA, where she served as an orientation counselor and resident assistant. She received her MA in higher education and student affairs at New York University. Prior to coming to USC, she was a residence life coordinator at UC Merced and advisor for two Greek organizations, Delta Delta Delta and Alpha Phi Omega. She spent the last two years as a residential college coordinator for New North Residential College. In her free time, she likes to travel, explore the outdoors, work on her calligraphy and go to Disneyland. She loves spending time with her partner, Greyson, and her corgi named Rey.

SIGNATURE EVENTS Faculty in Residence Dinners
Parkside Professional Development Series
These are weekly dinners hosted by Parkside Faculty in Residence. In collaboration with IRC and Apartments, PRB hosts a weekly Faculty in Residence Dinner with a specially designed weekly menu with cuisines from across the world. Each dinner has a guest speaker who has achieved a level of mastery and who speaks on the subject of his/ her choice.
Ongoing series of professional development lectures, discussions and Q&As. Previous programs have included a Resume Workshop, free professional headshots, a Q&A session with Parkside alumni seniors, Networking Advice, Career Fair & Interview Tips and Tricks, and a session on how to land a summer internship or research position at USC.
Arts in the PAHRC
Talks and Treats
A day-long celebration of resident work in the fine arts, film, dance and comedy held during the Spring Semester. Previous activities at Arts in the PAHRC have included a full line-up of resident musicians, an art showcase, and various arts and craft activities (hosted by the Creative & Performing Arts and Arts & Architecture Themed Floors)
Parkside Provides
An ongoing series of philanthropic programs. Previous programs affiliated with Parkside Provides have included Hygiene Kit assembly for the Downtown Women’s Center, trips to Union Rescue Mission in downtown Los Angeles; participating in the Volunteer Center’s Friends and Neighbors Day, sandwich making for the Midnight Mission on Skid Row, fundraising for the American Cancer Society, hosting food and clothing collection drives; and more!
A bi-weekly discussion series where residents can get together informally and discuss recent hot topics in the news and in their lives.
Camping Trip
An overnight camping trip to Leo Carillo State Park during the Spring.
Party at the Darkside
A Halloween party hosted by Parkside area Building Governments. Parkside A&H residents host a costume contest and transform the Parkside Performance Cafe into a Haunted House for the bravest souls to enjoy.
Tri-Parkside Cup
An intramural Harry Potter-style sports competition between the three Parkside buildings (PRB, IRC, and Parkside Apartments). Every Spring, residents from each of the buildings are encouraged to team up for a series of friendly competitions amongst the three Parkside buildings to see who can take on the title of Tri-Parkside Cup Champion for the upcoming year. Previous events have included dodgeball, soccer, water balloon toss, capture the flag, and more.

GET INVOLVED WITH RESIDENTIAL STUDENT GOVERNMENT Residential Student Government serves all students who live in University housing by enhancing their residential experience at USC. RSG consists of representatives from each Residential College, making up six boards: President, Advocacy, Community Outreach, Funding, Programming, Social Justice & Inclusion. One of the largest organizations on campus, RSG is a voice to build community, empower residents and promote leadership development.
