WELCOME NEW NORTH RESIDENTS Welcome to your new home in New North Residential College! We are incredibly excited to welcome you onto campus as an official member of the Trojan Family! We hope you are looking forward to your transition and excited about meeting and living among 550 of your peers. We know you’ll love the vibrant and prideful livinglearning community New North residents have fostered over the years. Through offering you diverse programming opportunities, faculty and staff support, and a premium location on campus, we’re confident that you’ll feel at home in no time!

NEW NORTH RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE History New North Residential College, originally called North Residential College, was founded in 1993 and consisted of EVK, College, University, and Harris Halls. In 1997, New Residential College (consisting of just EVK and College Halls) was split off, and for the following 18 years, New and North were separate, each with their own Faculty Masters and programming. Past Faculty Masters and residents included Professor Florence Clark, Stanley Rosen, Stephen Toulmin, Cynthia Hendricks and Tim Gustafson. The current Co-Facul-
ty Masters of New North Residential College are Professors Phil Ethington and Ange-Marie Hancock. Professor Ethington began as Faculty Master of New in 2011, and Professor Hancock began as Faculty master of North in 2012. Considering that the student residents of New and North shared a common identity and common spaces, the four halls were merged into one Residential college, but retain the historic dual name, which students had long ago adopted: “New North.”
CARDINAL & GOLD EVENTS Cardinal & Gold events take place every Friday and Saturday night and are free to all residential students. There are activities and outings for every interest – from feature film screenings in McCarthy Quad to evening hikes in Griffith Park to concerts at LA Live. Be on the lookout for the weekly schedule of events in the Fall!

Corey Lueker
Corey Lueker was raised in Arizona and studied journalism and English literature at the University of Arizona, where he also spent three years as a resident assistant. As a first-generation college student, Lueker recognized the value of having mentors and student affairs staff available for students in transition, so he decided to pursue a master’s in higher education and student affairs at the University of Connecticut. His favorite aspects of living in Los Angeles are the natural environment and the weather, as he is a huge outdoors activity enthusiast. He is also a geek culture fanatic with an interest in comic books, super heroes, science fiction, and popular culture. During his free time, Lueker is a blog writer and enjoys writing fictional stories. He also has a strong interest in social justice and inclusion education, and has spent the last few years focusing on research related to gender role conflict and gender performance.
Graduate Residential College Coordinator
Alexa Layne recently graduated from the University of San Diego with a bachelor’s in interdisciplinary humanities and is currently in her first year in the USC Rossier School of Education’s postsecondary administration and student affairs master’s program. She was born and raised in a very small, rural town in North San Diego County, and had never lived outside the county prior to coming to LA. She likes to keep herself busy, and whenever she is lucky enough to have some free time, she can be found reading. She seems to always be in the middle of a book or on her way to get a new one. Layne is also often on the hunt for her next favorite coffee shop or is somewhere outside soaking up the sun. She is also a huge dessert fan and new to the LA area, so she looks forward to exploring all the trendy food items LA has to offer.

Derek Murakami

Derek Murakami oversees the North Area (consisting of New North Residential College and Birnkrant Residential College) and South Residential College (consisting of Marks Tower, Pardee Tower, Marks Hall and Trojan Hall). Born and raised in Southern California, Derek attended Colorado State University where he earned his bachelor’s in social work and master’s in student affairs in higher education. He served three years as a resident director at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, three years as a residence director at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL, and the fall 2016 semester as resident director for Semester at Sea, which traveled to 12 different countries and 13 cities. Derek has developed a passion for LGBTQIA equity, and social justice and cultural competency education, especially focused on support of Asian Pacific Islander and Desi American student populations. He is excited to return to Southern California, particularly for all the great food, and to be at an institution where he can cheer on competitive athletic sports teams.

Ange-Marie Hancock Alfaro
Ange-Marie Hancock is a tenured professor of gender studies, political science and sociology at USC and co-faculty master of New North Residential College, where she lives on the north side of the building. In 1993, under the mentorship of NBA Hall of Famer Tom “Satch” Sanders, Hancock conducted the original survey research and designed the business model for the Women’s National Basketball Association. Today, Hancock is a globally recognized scholar of intersectionality theory, the world’s leading analytical framework for analyzing and resolving inequality. She has written three books on the intersections of categories of difference like race, gender, class, sexuality and citizenship and their impact on public policy. Last year, Hancock founded the tech start-up, RISIST, the Research Institute for the Study of Intersectionality and Social Transformation, a cooperative social enterprise that consults with activists, researchers and organizations

Philip Ethington
Professor of History, Political Science, and Spatial Science Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences
Phil Ethington recently completed a massive, born-digital online global history of Los Angeles, “Ghost Metropolis: Los Angeles Since 13,000.” He is interested in communicating historical knowledge to the broadest public possible, so his recent work includes large-scale museum installations of geohistorical visualizations, an award-winning documentary film, “Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman” (with Dustin Hoffman, 2008); and the development of software platforms for online multimedia publishing. He lives with his daughters, ages 15 and 19, and their 2-year-old dog Harvey, a very friendly and cute doxi-poodle mix. Ethington was raised in suburban Detroit by an engineer and patent attorney/inventor, so he is also a craftsman who loves to build things. As an urbanist who has written about the social, cultural, political, economic, and geographic dimensions of Los Angeles, he is eager to introduce students to this great and diverse metropolis and plans to lead several tours of different neighborhoods during the year.

GET INVOLVED WITH RESIDENTIAL STUDENT GOVERNMENT Residential Student Government serves all students who live in University housing by enhancing their residential experience at USC. RSG consists of representatives from each Residential College, making up six boards: President, Advocacy, Community Outreach, Funding, Programming, Social Justice & Inclusion. One of the largest organizations on campus, RSG is a voice to build community, empower residents and promote leadership development.
