BYSTANDER TIP SHEET Challenge Harmful Norms
Encourage conversations that redefine social norms. Promote vulnerability, empathy, and respect in relationships.
Support Survivors Openly and Privately Listen without judgment, believe survivors, and offer support in ways that align with their needs. Create safer spaces for disclosure without fear of dismissal or retaliation.
Educate on Consent Beyond “No Means No” Shift focus to affirmative, enthusiastic consent that includes ongoing communication and mutual agreement in all interactions.
Interrupt Harmful Behaviors in Peer Circles Call out and disrupt jokes, language, or actions that normalize sexual violence or objectification. Be an active bystander in social settings.
Promote Emotional Awareness & Healthy Relationships Encourage discussions around feelings, mental well-being, and boundary-setting to cultivate respectful and emotionally fulfilling relationships.
