Tonight we gather for the 65th Annual USC Architectural Guild Awards, the industry’s premier gathering to celebrate the architects, designers, and builders shaping Los Angeles’ built environment, and the signature fundraising event for the USC School of Architecture.

This year’s theme, Building Community On and Off the Field, speaks directly to the work of our School. From stadiums that harness collective energy to civic spaces that foster wellness, inclusion, and cultural identity, architecture remains the discipline that gives form to shared life. It is the work to which we educate our students, and to which this Guild has been devoted for sixty-five years.

This moment asks a great deal of our field. Los Angeles faces consequential questions about resilience, sustainability, and the kind of city we will leave to those who follow. Our answer, as a school and as a profession, must be bold, research-driven, and grounded in the conviction that design elevates the human experience and strengthens the bonds of community.

Tonight’s honorees exemplify that belief. The Distinguished Firm Award is presented to Populous, a global design firm known for stadiums and public spaces that redefine community gathering and city celebrations. This is especially meaningful tonight as we meet at BMO

Stadium. The Impact Award recognizes Leo Seigal and Dustin Bramell for their project Case Study: Adapt, a visionary response to the January 2025 fires. Their work reimagines the iconic Case Study Houses program to promote climate resilience and community rebuilding. We also proudly honor D. Michael Hamner ’84, FAIA, and Krystal Kau Hamner ’92, AIA, CASp with the Distinguished Alumni Award, celebrating a family practice with roots in Los Angeles and a strong connection to the Trojan Family. Their decades of work in architecture, education, and service exemplify the excellence of a USC Architecture education.

Impact Award Dustin Bramell & Leo Seigal

The Impact Award is presented to Dustin Bramell and Leo Seigal, recognizing their transformative work through Case Study: Adapt and its profound contributions to the built environment and the communities it serves. The nonprofit initiative has reimagined Los Angeles’s iconic Case Study House Program for today’s climate realities, demonstrating how architecture can foster belonging, recovery, and long-term resilience.

“We’re deeply honored to receive this year’s Impact Award from USC. Case Study: Adapt was founded on the belief that architecture matters most when it improves people’s lives, and we’re grateful to be part of a community that believes design can help people rebuild and move forward.”

Dustin Bramell & Leo Seigal

After losing his home in the 2025 Palisades Fire, Dustin Bramell co-created Case Study: Adapt, a nonprofit revival of Arts and Architecture Magazine’s iconic “Case Study House Program.” Bramell also sits on the board of the Charles & Ray Eames Foundation.

In 2026, Bramell co-founded PILLAR, a technology platform that brings together financing, insurance, and resilience expertise to harden homes in climate-impacted markets. In partnership with the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, PILLAR standardizes the documentation and verification of resilience improvements, creating the foundational layer for resilient housing to function as a distinct, financeable asset class.

Before turning his attention to physical-world innovation, Bramell spent a decade at Meta (formerly Facebook) where he led the company’s expansion into video and the creator economy, helping transform Facebook and Instagram from social apps into global media networks.

Leo Seigal is a Los Angeles–based, London-born serial entrepreneur working at the intersection of design, culture, and technology. He is the co-founder of The Expert, a design platform backed by Forerunner Ventures and First Round Capital that was recently acquired by Havenly Brands. Seigal co-founded Case Study: Adapt and serves on the board of the Charles & Ray Eames Foundation.

Earlier in his career, he co-founded multiple consumer and social-impact startups, including Represent, which was acquired by Custom Ink and facilitated over $300 million in charitable contributions, and Prizeo, a philanthropic platform that led him to leave the University of Oxford early after being accepted into Y Combinator.

The Distinguished Firm Award is presented to Populous in recognition of the global design firm’s extraordinary impact on the built environment and its role in shaping spaces that bring people together.

Known for designing iconic spaces for the world’s most renowned names in sports and entertainment, the firm’s innovations have revolutionized experiences in thousands of communities worldwide and for billions of viewers watching at home.

Populous employs more than 1,600 people across 35 offices on four continents. Populous’ diverse team includes specialists across a range of disciplines, from architecture and interior design to branded environments, urban planning, event design, and landscape architecture.

The Distinguished Alumni Award is the school’s highest alumni honor, recognizing extraordinary alumni whose work exemplifies design excellence, meaningful contributions to the profession, and a deep commitment to advancing a more inclusive and impactful built environment. Through their decades-long careers, Michael and Krystal Hamner embody these values—bringing not only technical expertise, but also generosity, mentorship, and purpose to everything they do.

“To be recognized by the school that shaped us is incredibly meaningful and reminds us how powerful this profession can be when it’s rooted in purpose and people. USC opened doors for us that changed the trajectory of our lives, from education to opportunity to community. That journey has allowed us not only to build projects, but to build relationships, create pathways for others, and give back in ways that continue to ripple outward.”

D. Michael Hamner FAIA, Architects and BArch | Builder Architects are collaborative practices led by Michael Hamner (BArch ’84) and Krystal Kau Hamner (BArch ’92), blending architectural excellence with deep construction insight. Founded by Michael in 1990, with Krys joining as an early partner, the firm has grown organically, with more than 90% of its work coming from repeat clients and referrals—a testament to its reputation and long-standing relationships. Their portfolio spans residential, commercial, institutional, hospitality, and sports/recreation projects, all designed with careful attention to detail and cost effectiveness. While architecture remains the firm’s primary focus, construction and procurement services are offered selectively to support the design process.

Michael, a licensed architect and AIA Fellow, brings over four decades of experience, technical expertise, and leadership. Krystal, licensed as both an architect and General Contractor and a California Certified Access Specialist (CASp), contributes hands-on construction knowledge that ensures precision and accountability. Together, they bridge the gap between architects and contractors, fostering collaboration and trust.

Beyond practice, the Hamners are active civic leaders, engaged with AIA|LA and serving on design review boards, planning commissions, and youth sports organizations. Their work in athletics, coaching, and leadership in youth programs has shaped their approach to community development, emphasizing teamwork, inclusion, and civic pride.

Michael has also maintained a decades-long commitment to education. He has taught at Woodbury University and East Los Angeles College since 1992, serving as Chair from 2007 to 2021. His contributions have been recognized with the AIA|LA Educator of the Year Award (2021) and the AIA California Educator of the Year Award (2026).

Founded in 1958, the USC Architectural Guild provides guidance and insight into real-world experiences for students beyond the classroom. The Guild encourages its alumni and non-alumni members and peers—leaders in architecture, design, construction, engineering, finance, and real estate development—to give back and lead the way in career development and mentorship, scholarship and global fellowship support, and technology and material resources. Through knowledge, networking, and real-world experience, the Architectural Guild enriches and amplifies the USC education, inspiring architectural students to find purpose, meaning, and fulfillment in their pursuits.

Annually, the Guild raises significant funds for student scholarship and provides professional development through activities such as the mentorship program, the Design Charrette, and Career Week. The latter offers professional development workshops and culminates in a Firm Fair, where students network and explore opportunities for internships and jobs with top local and national firms.
