PHILLIP RAY HART Editor-in-Chief

VIRGINIA CULLEN PITT ANN UAL PUBLICATION OF STUDENT BODY UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND VO L UM E

24

Westhampton College Editor

WILLIAM LEE STIGALL, JR. Business Manager

Many long hours of planning and toil have been spent in the compilation of this book, the 1945 WEB. We have worked under many and varied difficulties; yet the eternal spirit of the University of Richmond coupled with the splendid cooperation received from the entire student body has made possible the presentation of this volu;me. This year college life has not had all its customary gaiety and carefree activities to fill vacant moments. However, there have been events which we can recall-t hose which have enriched our thoughts, kindled and strengthened glowing friendships, and incited us toward higher and nobler goals. The 1945 WEB attempts to preserve for you, the Seniors, a picture of the most important happenings, the quiet scenes of an unforgettable campus, and some of the nlittle things" th~t impressed you with an intangible joy within. Messages echoing from lands over the world assure us of the peace of mind inculcated by these memories. Character has been developed here; spiritual minds and physical bodies have been enlightened; and warm friendships have been kindled. Above the noise and turmoil of our campus has often been heard the calm and dignified voice of one who has devoted the greatest number of the years of his life toward successÂŁul guidance of the student body and faculty of the University of Richmond. With a f eeltng of gratitude and pride, the staff is honored to dedicate this volume of the WEB . to one who has served loyally and untiringly as president of his Alma Mater, 1945 marking the fiftieth year of his service, a great American educator, friend, and counselor, Dr. Frederic W. Boatv:right. - THE EDITOR.

IN MEMORIAM

*

With you a part of me hath passed

away;

For in the peopled foresf of my mind A tree made leaf less by this wintry wind Shall ne ver don a gain its green array. Chapel and fireside , country road and bay, Have something

of their friendliness

resigned;

Another , if I would, I could not find, And I am . grown much . older in a day. But ye t I treosure in my memory Your gift of charity, and young hearts'

ease,

And the dear honor of your amity; For these once mine, my life is rich with these ¡. •

And I scarce know which part may greate r be .__ 1

Duke 6¡l

Opening their 1944 grid season against a much heavier and experienced Duke team, the Spiders were defeated 61-7. Even against those odds , the Red and Blue fought bravely and in the last four minutes of play scored a touchdown on a pass from Milner to Suttenfield, Richmond 's only score ever made against Duke.

Richmond Army A.ir Base 0

Coach Pitt's Spiders turned back a fighting Air Base team 34-0. Richmond uncovered two dependable backs in Milner and Suttenfield who displayed great passing and line plunging attacks. Other players who gave a notable performance were Odell, Wood , Null , and Allen .

V.M.I. 26 Richmond spectators witnessed one of the most thrilling games ever played in the city stadium when the Keydets of V.M.I. upset the favored Spiders 26-20. Suttenfield 's broken field running and Milner 's passes to Kilpatrick, Kolcum, and Moody kept the Richmond team in motion and the game "nip and tuck" up to the final whistle. Richmond 20 -

Portsmou .th Fleet Team 19

After V -12 examinations, furloughs, and transfers, Coach Pitt had little time to whip up a team to engage the sailors from Portsmouth. The Red and Blue ·fought determinedly, but were unable to halt the more powerful and heavier sailors who · rang up a 19-0 score over Richmond.

Richmond O -

Taking advantage of Rodgers' punts and the fine defense of Null, the Spiders rolled up their first victory over a college squad this year by trouncing H.-S. 18-0. NiacDonald, Milner, Kranitsky, Jarratt, and Kilpatrick, all V-12's, gave an impressive performance in their last game for Richmond before being transferred.

[ 35]

Virginia 39

Despite the fine defense of Null, Wood, and Jarratt, the Cavaliers proved too powerful for the Rich mond eleven, and chalked up a 39 to O victory. Al though they scored in every period , the scrappy Richmond squad made "Duda and Co. " fight for every score.

Richmond O -

N. C. State 39

Steam rolling their way to 39 points, the Wolfpack held the Spider squad scoreless. Richmond was on the defensive until the closing minutes of the game when Harris and Allen put on a scoring threat, but were stopped at the State 's 23. Richm .ond O -

William and Mary 40

After a scoreless first period, the Indians bounced

back with fury to beat the Spiders 40-0 in the annual Turkey Day classic. Despite \Y/alker' s punts, Wood's and Suttenfield' s defense, the Spiders were on the defensive until the fourth quarter. Then Richmond 's scoring threat was stopped by a pass interception. Even though the scores do not show it, Richmond had a successful gridiron year. Successful in the fact that Coach Pitt produced a team that had spirit, fight, and which played clean football, traits of which we are justly proud.

Baseball 19!/3-t/t/ Although handicapped by a small schedule, inexperience, and a limited practice session, the Red and Blue again captured the title of Big Six champions. The team turned in their best perÂŁ ormance against THE BIG THREE the starred professional team of the Norfolk Naval Captain LAWLER, GASSER, Coach PITT. Training Station by holding the sailors to a 4 to 4 tie until the eighth ending. Then the sailors got three men on base--one by a Spider error and two being hit by pitched balls. They connected at the plate and went ahead to take the ball game at 8 to 4. The Spiders were defeated by the boys from Charlottesville in their first game 2 to 0, but the fighting Red and Blue team bounced back to take the Cavaliers in the second game by the wide margin of 9 to 0. We took both games from the ((Death Valley" boys of Hampden Sydney at 8 to 5 and 15 to 0. The powerful Navy team at Annapolis proved too strong for the Spiders, and we had to bow to the Middies at the score of 9 to 3. The Richmond nine handed the Medicos of the Medical College of Virginia two defeats at the count of 11 to 3, and 20 to 7, the last game being played on Homecoming Day. Losing only three out of eight games, the Spiders under the expert coaching of Mac Pitt ended the somewhat limited schedule with a very successful season. The squad was composed of Garratt, Gantt, Mac Silver, C. Lawler, MetzgeÂŁ, Priddy, Kilpatrick, Weaver, Magette, Null, Milner, Gasser, and Hoitsma.

The Richmond Spiders "Big Six" champions of last year had only one letterman returning to guide the team this year, that being All State ((Fearless" Freddie Gantt. Freddie was elected captain and has been the "Spark plug" of the team, setting the highest scoring pace plus. showing the best defensive action. Coach Pitt had the same handicap with basketball as with the other sports , and that one was trying to mold an inexperienced team into a winning quintet. Twenty-five boys with fine Richmond spirit, willingness, and ability responded to the call of Coach for basketball material. All of the candidates were ambitious but lacked college experience. Coach Pitt was neither optimistic nor pessimistic about the team, but on commenting as to prospects, he said that "the boys will have to work hard, get in there and fight, and I think that we'll win some games." Opening the season against the Army Air Base after only four days of practice , the Spiders demonstrated both their offensive and defensive powers by holding the much favored "Flyers" to 52 points while racking up 50 points themselves. The game was a thriller from start to finish with Gantt and Allen taking top honors for the Spiders. The following week saw the Red and Blue quintet thrashed soundly at the hands of the NNTS , one of the top ranking Service teams of the nation, at the score of 82-30. The Cavaliers finally toppled the Spiders in the closing minutes of the game 30-24 , after a slow beginning by both teams. ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION BOARD. Standing: Miss Fanny G. Crenshaw, Helen Mumper, Jane Wray Bristow, Miss Gene \"X'oodfin, Jeanne Fitzgerald, Sitting: Maida Mickle, Anne Higgins, Ruth Latimer, President; Conway Bibb, Ann Seay, Betty Edwardsen.

Wesl'tiampt ott Qfttleticassociatiott President Ruth Latimer presided over the Westhampton College Athletic Association Board and in true Westhampton spirit led the Association through an interesting and active year. The Board consisted of Conway Bibb, vice president; Jeanne Fitzgerald, secretary; Helen Mumper, treasurer; Jane Wray Bristow, manager of hockey; Betty Edwardsen, manager of basketball; Maida Mickle, manager of tennis; Anne Higgins , manager of track, and Ann Seay, head cheerleader. Miss Gene W ood:fin and Miss Fanny G. Crenshaw acted as members of the advisory board. Facing another year of college in wartime, the board planned events which would arouse interest and spirit among the students and which would bind them more closely as a working community qf good citizens. r The Freshmen were introduced to the ass6ciation and the spirit for which it stands at a picnic given at the Faculty Kitchen during Orientation week, and in late November they were given a chance to meet many of the upperclassmen on a hike and picnic at Basher' s Dam, where supper was cooked over an

open fire and many songs and yells were participated in by the group. The Christmas season included the Athletic Association Christmas Co-ed in its festivities. The achievement which contributed most toward greater school spirit was the revival of the annual Song Contest which had been abandoned in 1942 so that more time could be spent in war activities. It was decided that the contest contributed to the spirit of keen competition and good sportsmanship for which Westhampton is noted and although less time was spent in preparation as had been agreed, the contest proved to be a helpful and inspiring success. At the annual spring banquet blazers were awarded to the girls winning varsity letters in three ma jar sports. \ 7 arsity tennis and track letters were a warded and seals were presented to those girls who showed outstanding interest and spirit in athletic activities as well as all college activities which contributed to the college spirit. The week-end house party for old and new board members closed a successful year for the Athletic Association.

The honor of a Westhampton Seal, which has been replaced by a key due to wartime restrictions, is conferred each spring upon those girls who, because of their cooperation and school spirit, enthusiasm and interest, have promoted interest in athletic as well as all college events and a feeling of unity between the players and spectators. This presentation is made by the Athletic Association B Jard of the College.

SEAL WINNERS Front row: Jane Bristow, Caroline Goode. Second row: Lillian Belk, Ruth Latimer, Rita

11z-aclz Westhampton does not pl.ace great emphasis on track but there is always a large group of Co-Ords participating in this sport. In the all-city Quadrangular Track Meet, held at Westhampton in the spring of 1944, Westhampton's track team vied with ¡ teams from Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall and Saint Catherine's for honors. Jane Wray Bristow was high scorer with 20.5 points and Imogene Cowan was first in the 50-yard dash. Westhampton College took first place in the meet with a total of 33.5 points. Cornelia Reid, Elsie Henley, Sallie Lawson, Virginia Dawson, Jane Bristow, and Imogene Cowan received Westhampton letters in track.

The rating of tennis players is determined by means of a tennis ladder which is always subject to change. At the end of the season Maida Mickle was at top position with Rita Muldowney at second place. Betty Anne Gustaf son, Lois Hester , and Ruth Latimer placed in the third, fourth and fifth slots. Due to transportation difficulties the team did not make any out-of-town trips but confined their competition to city teams . A play day with the V-12's and Richmond College students was a high light of the season. Those girls who placed in the first ,five positions on the ladder won their 1etters in the sport. TENNIS. Kneeling: Ruth Latimer, Rita Muldowney. Standing: Lois Hester, Miss Fanny Crenshaw, Betty Anne Gustafson. (Absent from picture: Maida Mickle.) BLAZER WINNERS. Seated: Lois Hester, Jane Bristow . Standing: Sallie Lawson, Rita Muldowney.

The Westhampton Blazer is awarded to a girl who has made her letter in any three major sports, which are hockey, basketball, tennis, and track. These blazers are white flan nel jackets with red Westhampton tower seal on the top pocket. They give recognition for unusual achievement and skill in athleti cs and the stripes of the pocket insignia indicate the number of sports in which a -letter ha_s been won, whi le stars indicate the number of times letters have been won. 1944 Blazer winners were Sallie Lawson with letters in hockey, basketball and track; Jane Wr ay Bristow with letters in hockey, basketball and track, and Lois Hester with letters in hockey, tennis and basketball.

HONOR COUNCIL.

Last year, because of the con stantly changing condition s on the Richmond Colleg e campus due to the war, the Student Government Association was reorganized for the duration. According to the plan work~d out, a comn1ittee from the College Administration chose fifteen men eligible for Student Government from which the students voted for nine. , These nine in turn · elected their officers. JOEL W. HARNETT This year ~he students saw President fit to modify this system so that the student body voted for the specific offices. The competitive party system was revived. Again, due to the very small enrollment the Student Council served as the Honor Council. Also with the indefinite status of most men as to their classes, there was no class organization. Rather all affairs were handled through the regular Student Government Association. This year with the able leadership of Joel Harnett , the Executive Council- has sought to coordinate all the phases of student life, and to keep all students participating in extra curricular activities under difficult wartime · copdi• • t1ons.

Working for the Collegian this year was really more a gam~ of chance than anything else. Not only was there a sad depletion of Richmond College students, but because of trans£ers and graduation, the 1nore able and experienced writers, among the V-12 Unit, left campus. For this reason more work and responsibility fell upon the few. Omar Mardan, the ((chief," left school at midterm, and· Nancy Lazenby took over the editorship. All year the staff lived in mortal terror that it would lose one or all of its members to the Armed Forces. A special ·project was undertaken . by the paper in connection with the "Million-Dollar Campaign," being sponsored by the University. Each week the paper ran a story concerning one of the buildings being planned, giving full details of the structural plan and iocation of the building. In the same issue, editorial comment was made concerning the uses of these postwar plans, and giving suggestions as to postwar education here at the University. Also, attempts were made to evolve the ttgossip column " into a department which would be amusing and full of zest, but (completely) with malice toward none. The 1944-45 staff followed . the age-old routine: Tuesday afternoon the copy came in (maybe), and in the quiet of the Play House office, inspiring in its very bleakness, the stories were read and corrected. After much pleading and gnashing of teeth,. someone was bribed into taking the copy by the print shop. On Wednesday, there were headlines to be written, make-up to be thought of, and more stories to be taken by the print shop. Thursday was the big day. The staff went to the print shop, where there was a frantic attempt to fill in those little inches, and the paper was finally put to bed.

From the darkest corners of the world letters have come expressing a deep and sincere appreciation for memories of campus life. Serving as constant reminders of home, these memories have grown warm and real to servicemen near and far. Each personal feeling of a student gone from our sacred halls has been a stimulus to the spirit of the 1944-1945 WEB staff. With cooperation as a theme, we have worked to compile a permanent record for the present students of the University , a record which will mirror symbols of college days and treasured friendships . In spite of the hardships confronting the publication of this year 's annual there has been fine cooperation shown by both the business and editorial staffs, each contributin g his part and ever willin g to aid the other in time of emergency. We remember with a smile the suppers in the _W EB office, over a table of - well , a table anyway. Here long hours of labor became pleasant h~ppenings , and we became united in a common purpose . In the pages of the year book we have stressed the "little things " that we remember from our years of college life . Amid familiar surround ings- the towering pines , the Gothic chapel , the tranquil lake-we learned , were inspired , and grasped the happiest moments of a lifetime . These have become a vital part of our lives; they are part of us. EDITORIAL STAFF . The Messenger, oldest of the campus publications, accepts again the challenge from a war-torn society to protect its democratic ideals and to keep alive free journalism. This year the Messenger has tried to reflect in its pages not only the literary creativeness of the students, but also some of the problems and ideas that arise before them in wartime. Not only has the content borne the imprint of war, but the staff has felt the expected problems. The contributors were fewer and the range of talent somewhat diminished. The publication was restricted to three issues this year. Besides the problems that the staff has faced together with -their fell ow students, the most outstanding problem it has encountered has been the lack of efficient organization which the editorial body has felt within itself. The staff has cooperated with the Editor-in-chief in the hope that a strong organization would increase the interest of the students , inspire better journalism and make the Messenger an integral part of the education of those students who find the time and the interest to devote to it. The Fall issue was focused on the individual. The material presented some of the various personalities that produce and bring into relief out of the great panorama of human living. The second issue was devoted to education. The Messenger felt that there was a growing interest in new procedures of learning among the students and a concern for the problems of postwar education in relation to the returning serviceman. In the Spring issue Richmond, past and present, formed the central theme. Around these ideas we worked the contributions of the student body.

* Although the W EB is th e best campus publication, its staff does allow its "f riends" from the Collegian and Messenger offices to associate with itmerely, however, for th e sake of "Journalism. "

The Forensic Council was organized in 1930 in order to coordinate the activities of the three literary societies and the debate team. Since that time, several activities have evolved which the Council annually sponsors. Among these are the inter-society debates, the inter-society banquet, and Ladies' Night. The Council has rendered valuable service in these difficult days in that it has helped to keep the societies alive and active. This year the Council has been capably guided by Gordon Conklin as President, and A. J. Sullivan as Secretary-Treasurer. Although the Council feels that its work for this year has been well done, it looks forward with hope to the postwar days when Forensic activity can take its rightful place in the IiÂŁe of the student.

?nu ~i9ma Rlio f ite1ta1t~ ~ociet~. Founded in October, 1846, Mu Sigma Rho Literary Society is probably the oldest students' organization at Richmond College. Led by Julian Pentecost and Ralph Shotwell, who served as president and vice-president during the first semester, and Kenneth Smith a-nd Norman Long, who served in those capacities during the last semester, the society enjoyed a most successful year. The organization affords opportunity for training in reading, declaiming, public speaking, debating, and writing. In carrying out the purpose of the society to promote clearer expression, each member was given the opportunity to speak at least twice during the year , and many extemporaneous speeches on various amusing topics were given. Beyond intrasociety debating, Mu Sig, as always, met with S. C. Mitchell and Philologian for intersociety debates.

The grim war years of 1944 and 1945 have had a marked effect on the nature and character of the work done by the members of Philologian. With ranks greatly depleted by graduation and loss to the services, the Society set about to build up its membership to normal levels. Of necessity, the majority of these men came from the freshman class, with little or no experience.

But these men have shown great promise, ability, and industry. The programs have been very interesting this year with prepared speeches and extemporaneous talks which were above par. The Society has particularly enjoyed discussions of topics of current interest. The goal of the Society has been to · teach its men to think clearly (Contheir feet" and to speak well.

Mr. Ralph Winders, Baptist student secretary in the State, worked through the Ministerial Association to secure men for work during the summer among churches and missions in the State. The students eagerly became engaged in this type of work, for we realized that there was an urgent need for ministers and past9rs in this area. Also we realized the value of this practical work.

For the first time the Baptist Student Union has had a joint Westhampton-Richmond College Council. Under the leadership of the president, Joyce Eubank, and the Faculty Adviser, Miss Margaret Rudd, the B.S.U. has tried to effect its aim to form the link between the student and the church through the encouragement of service in the various churches in the city, through the "Y's" and Ministerial Association on the campus and . through social functions. The annual retreat at Roslyn was held in the spring. Nancy Todd was chairman of the Freshman Commission. The ''Y" was led this year by Anne MacKenzie. The organization also helped with the planning of Religious Emphasis Week and had charge of several Vesper Programs during the year. Also at a chapel" program they presented as speaker the Young Peoples' Secretary from the International t(Y." Furthermore the "Y" worked with the Richmond Inter-Collegiate Council. As is the custom, the group was in charge of the booths on May Day. It also sponsored the book drive for prisoners of war.

The club sponsors debates , discussions, and lectures in a conscientious effort to keep abreast of the times. The club is sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation of World Peace.

The War Council has been active this year in help ing the French War Relief . It has also sponsored entertainment for the wounded at McGuire Hospit al. The goal in the sale of stamps and bonds is to send a quota of men fully equipped overseas. The Council also sponsored canteens for the V-12 boys. It has directed the students in their individual war work , also.

The 1944-45 Glee Club has also been hard hit by the shortage of students, but nevertheless under the experienced guidance of the director, Mr. Alton Howell, it continues to function. Its officers were: H. Melvin Wampler, President; Paul Strickland, Vice-president; Powhatan Cox, Business Manager; Thomas Ligon, Librarian. Meetings have been necessarily cut to once a week. Due to the government tax, the club has not made its usual appearances at Ewart's Cafeteria. However, before the year was over the club visited Mary Washington College, collaborated with Westhampton College Glee Club in a recital and presented other similar programs. The club welcomed into its small group several members from the V-12 Unit although their service was necessarily limited.

This year the Glee Club presented a Spanish Cantata at its Formal Concert. The Club went to Kilbourne Farm to entertain the girls there and later sang .for the wounded soldiers at McGuire Hospital and at the Army Air Base Hospital. The Spring "Pop" concert was also presented at which the club sang new popular songs as well as long time favorites. Anne Fisher was president of the club this year. In April the group sang for the 400 volunteer workers for the $1,000,000 campaign. This year due to the crowded schedules of many of the students the Glee Club's membership has been smaller. However, the accomplishments have been above average.

Richmond Colle9e Debate1eam The Debate Team was organized early in the year with Joel Harnett as captain and coach, and 0. J. Graham as manager. About ten men came out for the squad, but only about half of these have been active. We started the season with several practice debates with W esthampton College and met Farmville State Teachers' College as our first opponent. Early in December Joel Harnett, Norman Long, John ~✓ilbur and Jimmy Worrell represented Richmond in a state TKA Tournament at Natural Bridge, Virginia. Later in December, Joel Harnett and Norman Long represented Richmond in a radio discussion and a platform debate with Columbia University. Three of our members, Norman Long, 0. J. Graham, and Jimmy Worrell were tapped into Tau Kappa Alpha. _ In March we met the University of North Carolina in a highly contested debate on the National Question, "Compulsory Arbitration of Labor Disputes." Our negative, upheld by John Wilbur and Stanley Cohen with 0. J. Graham acting as moderator, took the decision. Closing our activities for the year, in April we took the affirmative of the National Question against the College of William and Mary. Stanley Cohen and Roy Wyatt upheld our argument. Although we did not do much travelling due to a curtailed budget, our manager established relations with a number of colleges far and wide-among which are New York University, Randolph-Macon College, and the Medical College of V~rginia. As times goes by we hope to visit these institutions and carry RC on to victory . .

Westhampton Colle9eDebate 1eam This year the Debate Council has worked with the Richmond College chapter of Tau Kappa Alpha. Their meetings consisted of short debates which were followed by forums. The subjects covered were usually connected with current events. Miss Ross was the council's sponsor this year. For three years the Debate Council has curtailed its inter-collegiate debating due to inadequate transportation caused by the war. Consequently the group has substituted debate forums for its goal in place of the previously held inter collegiate debates. The most paramount of the current events have been selected for these debate forums, and much worthwhile discussion has come out of these meetings. The council took over one of the Westhampton chapel programs trying to bring something of national importance before the students. This year the Debate Council has worked with the Richmond College chapter of Tau Kappa Alpha, and we hope to see this cooperation grow next year. Under the capable leadership of Miss Margaret Ross , the group has earnestly tried to sustain and further all forensic activities on the campus .

With fraternity affairs becoming more and more important in the lives of the students of Richmond College, a need was felt for a council to bind the fraternities together. In 1914 the Greek letter fraternities organized the Inter£ raternity Council. The Council is made up of two members from each fraternity and three members from the facuity. The officers for 1944-45 are: Dr. Herman P. Thomas, president; Dr. R. C. McDanel, vicepresident, and Professor Fred M . Caylor, secretary-treasurer. Omar Mardan is chairman of the Dance Committee. The work of the Interfraternity Council each year is to conduct "rushing" weeks, t(Interf raternity Week," interfraternity dances, the awarding of scholarship and intra-mural athletic trophie ·s. In a

normal year all of the fraternities take part in these activities, and the competition is very keen and spirited. The activities of the council have been greatly curtailed during the session of 1944-45 due to war conditions. However, regular meetings are held, and a close watch maintained on the problems of the chapters. Consideration is now being given to the future problems of fraternities on the campus, and plans are being made to keep the fraternities intact during the war. The Inter£ raternity Council has been indispensable this year as it has been in the past for it is here that the fraternities have the opportunity to thrash out their problems over the conference table and to make plans which will enable the individual £raternity to work more efficiently.

Beta Beta Beta was organized for the purpose of supplyi .ng for the biological sciences an honorary departmental fraternity. It seeks to encourage scholarly attainment in this field by reserving its membership for those who achieve sQperior records and who indicate peculiar aptitude for the subject of Biology. The chapter hailed this year with the furnishing of a new chapter room in the Biology Building. "Ye Are the Salt Of the Earth," was the title and text of Dr. William Keppner's talk at Convocation, March second. This was an endeavor to bring Tri Beta to the fore in the minds of the students on the campus. On April fourth, a banquet was held at which four from the V-12 unit, six from Westhampton College , and Dr. Paul S. Siegal ( as honorary member) were formally and informally elected to membership. The Biology Club , open to all those intrested in this field, was sponsored this year by Tri Beta after a lapse of two years. It is hoped that membership in this club will be an increased incentive toward higher membership in Beta Beta Beta.

CHEMISTRY CLUB. Top row: Ann Clark, Doris Colley, President; Audrey Grubin. Second rou;: Ruth Hiller, Peggy Macy, Alma Rosenbaum.

The Chemistry Club was organized in 1930, its purposes being to ÂŁurther interest in Chemistry and to promote more intimate relations between the students of Chemistry at the University of Richmond. To become a member of the club, a student must have done good work in the department and must present a paper on some subject in the field of Chemistry which he chooses. This paper, either a biographical sketch of a famous chemist, a treatise on a phase of Chemistry, or a dissertation on a new discovery, is read before the club. Due to war the membership has been limited to a certain degree. Members of the V-12 unit were invited to join the club last year. The officers this year are Doris Colley, President; Audrey Grubin, Vice-President; Ruth Hiller, Secretary, and Ann Clark, Treasurer. Among the interesting programs presented this year were discussions of spectrumanalysis., blood phosphorines and its importance, magnesi~m and its place as a vital war material, and plant pig~ents. New members whose pictures are not shown are Lucille Cosby, Lola Carter, Lucy Harvie, Zue Anders9 g:, Lincoln Baxter, A. J. Sullivan, 0. J. Graham, Wjlliam Hester, Virginia Gibson, Caroline Goode, Anni _e Breedlove, and Irene White. The Chemistry Club encourages students of exceptional ability by awarding Chemistry Club Honor keys to those who are members of the club with an average grade of ninety for two years' work in the department.

The Psychology Club was organized in October, 1944 for the benefit of psychology majors and minors. The program of this club supplements the regular class work of the students with opportunity for practical application of their knowledge, first-hand information of the psychopathical situations and condit ions in society, and gives the students guidance to the opportunities open to them in the field of psychology. The program for this has been both entertain ing and beneficial to the members. Speakers from varied fields of psychologica l wotk have broadened extensively our information of prospective occupations . Plans for the coming year were made between "hot dogs " while on a house party at D r. Siegel's home on the James. With the interest already exhibited in the Psychology Club this past year, we are assured of a stable and promising future for this organization.

* The purpose of Pi Delt a Epsil on , nation al honorary journalism fraternity, is to recognize students who hav e made outstandin g achievements in the field ·of journalism. A SUCCESSFUL savings plan must provide a regular amount_ to be saved on a regular day for a specific purpose ,, LIFE INSURANCEis the best plan yet devised to teach us the habit of saving and to keep us faithf~l to that habit. It is not an expense but a savings. It should be the first factor in everyone's programthe last to let go. LIFE INSURANCE creates an estate immediately, which might otherwise never be acquired. Make sure of your estate through the purchase of adequate -·Life ]nsurance .
