FOOTBA LL, 1930 'rhe season of 1930 ended with a record which would not be envied by most colleges, but every man on the University of Richmond squad put every ounce of fight into the game and showed the Spider fight from whistle to whistle. The record of two games won, two games tied and four garnes lost presents the facts of the season, but it does not begin to show the fight that was put into every quq, rter of every game. The season opened with sorne seasoned material, but there were many obstacles which Coach Dobson and his men had to overcome and they fought to come to the front. Richmond does not attempt to alibi its lost games. The games that were lost were lost with a fight just as the games were won. The season opened with a hard-fought game at Lexington against Virginia Military Institute which resulted in a 12-0 defeat for Richmond. The odds were in favor of the Cadet::; and it was thought by n1ost sports writers that Richmond had no chance against the Flying Squadron. The entire Spider squad saw service in this game and the result was a knowledge of what every inan co uld do. W'ith new additions to the backfield and line it was uncertain what the combination could do, but each man took his place with accuracy and fought to hold the strong Cadet line that battered through for two touchdowns. 'The next foe was the Washington and Lee eleven. Jn the first half the Generals fought with determination, but could not penetrate the line for a single score

From the opening whistle to the closing signal the Spiders were the aggressors and they outplayed the visitors in every phase of the Tirne after time Richmond n1arched down the tilt. field for first down after first down and the statistics of the contest revealed that Richmond made twentyone first downs to three for Emory and Henry. One week later the Jackets of R-andolph-Macon came to Richmond to meet the Spiders in the annual tilt. The Jackets .P resented the strongest team seen in Ashland in many seasons and they came up against the Red and Blue team with revenge in their hearts, not having defeated Richmond since 1914. In this game Henry Dohrman, acting Richmond captain, played real football and accounted for the 18-6 score by scoring three touchdowns for Richmond. Randolph-Macon accounted for eleven first downs and the Spiders made twelve. Richmond scored twice in the second quarter and the Jackets scored their only touchdown. Richmond scored again in the third quarter and the last quarter saw1 no scoring, but the Jackets opened up a dangerous passing attack which almost counted for points. The game resulted in a 0-0 deadlock, Richmond accounting for seven first downs to three for HamodenSydney. 'l'he final test of the season came when the Red and Blue team was called on to match its streng¡th against that of the powerful William and Mary eleven. The garn.e ended 19-0 for the Indians, but no team ever presented any stronger defense than Richn1ond put up that day. Football fans expected to see Red Maxey run wild against the Spider foe, but the web which en tangled the fleet back of such renown stopped his play. In the first quarter William and Mary was held with no score and the Richrn.ond defense could not be broken through'-. In the second quarter the Indians were able to put over one score. 'l'he Spider defense ren ewed its strength and thPrighting Indians thought that they were to be stopped in their tracks and Maxey had to be called on. but he had to be taken frorn the game injured for the first time in two years. The garn.e went to the last period, 6-0. and William and Mary threw eve ry ounce of fight into the game to meet the expectations of football fans. Bill Scott broke loose for a long run which resulted in a score, and later on another one was scored. But the Indians will never forget the fight that was put up to win that ga1ne. Joe Belcher was outstanding as a player and also as a captain. No captain was elected for the 1930 season in the absence of Landrmn . captain-elect .

Basketball, 1931 Having been v1ct1ms of an unprop1t1ous accident, the Richmond basketball season was not as successful as it might have been. After the Spider basketeers returned from a lay-off of the Christmas holidays, a period of two weeks, a case of contagious disease on the University of Richmond campus made necessary a period of quarantine which lasted for two weeks. No official practices could be held and the other teams of the state were well under way with their schedules. There was a supply of splendid material out, but the lay-off of a month caused prospects to be ruined. The Red and Blue cagers fought a good fight and in face of the hardships they went in the game ¡w ith the best that they had. The unfortunate season of I 93 I opened with the usual Medical College game which the Spiders easily won by a 31-2 r score. Coach Dobson made many changes in the line-up to test the strength of the team after the delayed start. The Rich1nond team went on a trip to the western part of the state, meeting three teams. The Maroons of Roanoke College were downed in a close 2724 gan1e at the new gymnasium in Salem. From Roanoke College the Richmond basketeers went to Lexington to encounter the Cadet five of Vir-

ginia Military Institute. The Cadets went into the lead and handed the Spiders a 33-28 defeat. The Richmond team made a good showing against the superior team of Cadets and the local's form was good, each man putting up a game struggle. On the homeward stretch the Spider five stopped to take on the Hampden-Sydney Tigers, but they were not able to cage the Tiger and a 3 r -2 5 victory was credited to the team in Death Valley. After the Richmond team came home the ancient Indian rivals of William and Mary prepared to compete with the locals. The Indians were credited with having the strongest team in the Conference and one of the strongest in the state, all of which was proved to be true when Richmond played them. The game was a hard fought one and the result was doubtful until the finish, but William and Mary was able to nose out the Red and Blue team by a 31-25 score. Return games were in order and the Sawbones of the Medical College were taken on and defeated in grand style. The Medicos did not present a very strong quint for the I 93 r season and Richmond could easily hand them a 45-39 defeat. Some of the unseasoned material had a good chance to get good practice in this game.

The Eagles from Bridgewater College came against the Red and Blue basketeers to suffer a 42-3 r punishment at the pleasure of Richmond. The Spiders seemed to be in good shape and were recovering from the inactive period, yet it was not the true form of the team of former days. Randolph-Maco n presented the same strong quint of the year before and the locals fell before the Jackets to the count of 36-2 5. Th~ Spiders had expected some keen competition and knew that they were slated to lose but the players did not fail to put up a clean, hard battle. One of the biggest setbacks of the season came when the Indians were met in a return game. The Richmond team could not break through the strong Indian defense and locate the basket. The Redskins played a splendid game to swamp Rich1nond, 40-1 o. Richmond took on a state team, playing the University of Virginia team, the result being a 28- I 8 setback for the Red and Blues. The previous year the Virginia courtmen won by the close score of 36-35, which is not bad against a strong team like the Cavaliers present. Having been defeated once at the hands of Richmond, Roanoke College came back to suffer another loss, a 34- I 7 victory for the Spiders. Hampden-Sydne y continued the Tiger invasion, taking the unfortunate Spiders for the count of 33-18. This was an uninteresting game as Rich-

mond seemed to be off form and the playing was not at all accurate. The locals tried to rally and check the charges of the Tiger, but were unable to do so. The final game of the season came and the opponents, the Jackets of Randolph-Maco n, soundly defeated Richmond, 52-35. The Richmond basketeers were not enough to hold back the opposing courtmen and the victory was a decisive one but Richmond did not give up hope until the final signal was given. The only men to play their last basketball games for Richmond were Stuart Eacho, captain, who has rounded out four years for his school, having won letters all four years, and Onesty. Eacho faced untold difficulties throughout the season and led his team in a noteworthy way the entire year. All the men on the team played a splendid type of ball and Perlowski and Babbitt showed up exceptionally well for their first year on the squad, each having earned a letter. The results show a total of thirteen games played, not including the Alumni game, eight defeats and five victories. Richmond scored a total of 4 I I points against 459 for the opponents, which is not a great record in actual figures, but when one considers what the odds were against the Spiders it will be noted that the record is nothing to be ashamed of.

THE 1931 \!VEB

Baseball, 1930 The year 19 30 was an eventful one for the Spiders in baseball ¡ though it did not look that way when Coach Dobson took charge of the candidates at the beginning, of the season. With what seemed to be poor hitting material, a team was rounded out which won state-wide recognition. The Red and Blue nine went into action and had little hopes of winning any honors, but teams were defeated on every side and when the curtain went down on college baseball the Spiders had emerged with twelve games won and one lost, having tied with V. P. I. for the state title. Hampden-Sydney was the first team to be met and the result was a 5-1 victory for Richmond. The game was played at Hampden-Sydney and the Tigers could not match the skill of the Spider nine. The hitting was up to standard and the field work was splendid, these features accounting for the victory. Randolph-Macon had an 11-3 defeat inflicted on them, the locals finding them a very easy team to handle. The next game was scheduled at Princeton and the results were much closer. Richmond emerged with a close 4-3 win. Washington and Lee was unable to match up with the Spider nine and the Gene, rals took a 4-0 drubbing. The University of Delaware came to Richmond with a good, strong team and the Red and Blue batterv The ., hammered the ball out to the count of 6-o for the Richmonders. first defeat of . the season came after a hard struggle with the Indians, the game having been played at the Richmond stadium before a large crowd. For eleven innings neither team could put a man past third base and it seemed that neither would score. On an error by a Richmond player the . Indians were able to send a man home and then another; The error cost the Spiders the game for a 3-0 count. The game 'vas a pitchers' battle from start to finish between Adams and Wallace, each pitching nearly to the breaking point. In an uninteresting game the Medical College was downed 12-7. Emory and Henry made a visit to the east with little success. Their game with Richmond resulted in a walk-away for the Spiders in a one-sided score of 23-5. The Wasp pitcher was hit to all parts of the diamond and Richmond received some good batting practice that day. One of the big surprises of the season came when the Navy was played. The Midshipmen were taken in tow for a 13-6 count, Winston Bro,vn taking the mound for Richmond. McCormick played his biggest game of the season when he drove out three home runs putting the Navy nine on the bottom of the scoring column. After having defeated the Navy nine so decidedly the Spiders let up a little and took a close 8-7 game at the expense of Hampden-Sydney. The Tigers put up a strong fight and it seemed that they might win, but Richmond checked its pace and stopped the Tigers. Randolph-Macon came back ¡for a return game to suffer another defeat, this time it being 10- 3. The Jackets usually turn out a good team but they were unable to cope with the locals in the baseball race. The cadets of V. M. I. came to Richmond with a team that stood high in the baseball circles and it seemed that the Spiders were to be defeated. The visitors scored one run in the first of the game and the two teams battled through to the eighth inning without any more scores, but Richmond scored two runs on an error made by V. M. I. and the game ended a Richmond victory, 2-1. The last game of the season was a Conference victory over William and Mary which put Richmond in tie with V. P. I. for the state championship. The Indians were outplayed at every angle to lose, 6-3. McCormick was the first to bat and the first ball of the game was turned into a three-base hit. Sherman was the next to bat and he accounted for three bases but was put out at home plate on a close play. Johnny Adams pitched a glorious game to wind up his college basebcUl, having signed a contract with the New York Giants. Tied with Virginia Polytechnic Institute for State Title.

DEDICATION 'To

Miss Isabel Harris The heights to which the minds of youth may soar are oft conditioned by the guidance given them-a mingling of true comradeship and sincerity, and a feeling of common understanding which glow beneath the learning of the scholar. Yours the guidance that may inspire tis to attain these heights and to you we affectionately dedicate this book-

The Seasons Sticks clash; whistles blow; someone scoops; a goal is made-and Hockey season is in full swing. Wonderful trips to Harrisonburg and Farmville and two victories to our credit: Harrisonburg, 3 to r; Farmville, r to o. The best game c.f the year follows: the banks are filled with students and professors; cheers rise on the air. A goal for Westhan1pton, two for Sweet Briar. Westhampton gets two more, and then con1es a rush down the field with the ball into Sweet Briar's goal twice. \Vith the final whistle the score stands Sweet Briar 4, Westhampton 3. Only one gan1e after this--that of Thanksgiving in which Varsity defeats Alumnae. It is a season worth remembering, but the greatest event of the year for us was the Hockey tournament in Williamsburg. Of teams from all over the state, we draw William and Mary for the first round and win by three points. Then we draw a combination of Randolph-Macon and Mary Baldwin and win again. Next comes the thrill of the year in spite of defeat-a game with the Southeast team. At Williamsburg five of our Varsity are recommended for the tournament in Philadelphia: Cooper, E. Seay, R. Crews, Beck and Williams. There was no winner of the tournament, but a wonderful spirit of sportsmanship was exhibited throughout. Varsity Basketball has four outside garnes this year. The first one, with William and Mary Extension on the r 3th of February was a victory for our team. Varsity has practice three times a week, once in the Millhiser gyn1. A trip to F rcdericksburg and one to s,veet Briar are looked forward to with n1uch pleasure, and the final game of the season will be here with Harrisonburg. Varsity squad looks promising \vi th a number of F reshn1en eager to play. We hope for a successÂŁ ul season.

It is only natur al that we shoul d lose sight of the significance of the n1ost famil iar terms . The word "comm encem ent," comin g originitiar e, means the act, fact or time of begin ning. inally fro1n the Latin , con1At this tin1e, the 111embers of the Class of '3 I are about to comm ence the practice of law, a time-h onore d profes sion. It is a self-e viden t fact that success in this profes sion, as in all others , is depen dent upon a sound philos ophy of life, manifested in high ethica l rules of perso nal condu ct.

+

We ¡ have it on good autho rity from those intim ately associ ated with Abrah am Linco ln durin g the years in \vhich he vvas engag ed in the practi ce of law in Illino is that he was const antly study ing how he could be both a good lawye r and a good n1an at one and the same time; and, that in pursu ance of this aim, he had forn1u lated a numb er of rules of perso nal condu ct of which the follow ing are e. . an1ples: First, he was al,vay s extrem ely carefu l in the prepa ration of every case irresp ective of wheth er the remun eratio n was large or small ; also he was what many today would consid er m~ticulously carefu l about charg ing. He alway s seen1ed to see the other side and wond ered how much he had earne d. He was know n to have sent back a part of the n1oney someo ne had ent hin1 for handl ing a case with the message "Wha t I did for you was not worth as n1uch as you sent, and I am sendin g back part." Anoth er rule, frequ ently expre ssed by himse lf was, "that he would never let people go to law if he could help it, but he would alway s try to get them to settle out of court ." Strict adher ence to these rules of perso nal condu ct \vhich L ¡i ncoln had establ ished for hi1ns~lf bore large fruita ge, as very shortl y after he had starte d his practi ce his gener osity, fairne ss and kindn ess becam e know n all over Illino is, and his practi ce had grown to large propo rtions . He was retain ed as couns el on a nu1nber of the bigge st cases of the day while , at the same time, many instan ces are on record of his re1~dering gratu itous legal services for indige nt client s. Histo ry is replet e vvith proof that ideals pay. Let us, memb ers of the Class of '31, k ep ever fresh our high ideals and shape our perso nal condu ct in confonni ty there\ vith. CLASS HISTO RIAN.
