Ashley M. Holder, MD, FACS

Dr. Ashley Holder is an Assistant Professor of Surgical Oncology in the Melanoma Section at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology at Davidson College where she was Salutatorian and Phi Beta Kappa. She received her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine, where she was AOA and an HHMI Medical Student Research Fellow in Genetics. She completed her General Surgery residency at Washington University in St. Louis, where she served as Administrative Chief Resident and was a finalist for the ACS Jameson L. Chassin, M.D., FACS Award for Professionalism. Her NIH T32 research fellowship during her residency and then her fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology were both at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she was awarded the Daniel Benedict Gazan Fellowship in Sarcoma Research.

As an educator and mentor, Dr. Holder is the Program Director and co-Principal Investigator of the NIH T32 training grant in Surgical Oncology at MD Anderson. She is a mentor to early-career surgeons nationally through the Association for Academic Surgery, in which she has served on the Executive Council since 2022, most recently as the Co-Chair of the Leadership Committee. With the goal of simplifying the language of cancer among clinicians nationwide, she serves the American Joint Committee on Cancer through the Neoadjuvant Staging Committee and the Education Committee.

As a surgeon scientist, Dr. Holder studies the transport of immune cells between the primary melanoma and the draining nodal basin to understand why some patients develop lymph node metastases. Her lab is supported by a NIH multi-PI R01, the American College of Surgeons’ Clowes Award, and one of two inaugural Department of Defense Melanoma Academy Scholar Awards.

She lives in Houston, Texas, with her husband, Sean, and sheepadoodle Louis (“Louie”), where she enjoys fishing, traveling, and baking.
