Back in 2017, when Urban Supply first brought its hats to the market, there was basically one major player selling certified and tested sun hats. Their products were solid, but the prices? Let’s just say they could give your bank account a sunburn. We, however had a different idea: What if proper sun protection was stylish, certified, and actually more affordable? So we launched Urban Supply with a mission to make CANSA-endorsed sun hats accessible to everyday South Africans. No frills, no inflated price tags, just real protection that looks good and won’t make your wallet cry. And here’s the fun part: once we showed it could be done, that “one big competitor” quickly launched a cheaper range. Why? Because we proved the market wanted it.
But the ripple didn’t stop there. As more stores started stocking Urban Supply, more South Africans got serious about sun protection. Suddenly, sun hats were everywhere. New players piled in. The whole category grew and it all started with us making noise about it. So yes, we sell hats. But we also did something bigger: We turned a niche, premium category into a mainstream movement. Today, the market is buzzing with choice and we love that. For us at the end of the day, more hats mean more protected people. - Microfibre: Microfibre is a man-made, synthetic material formed through a chemical process. It is composed of materials such as polyester, nylon polymers, or wood pulp. Unlike their natural-fiber counterparts, materials made with microfibre are less prone to shrinking and wrinkling while stil maintaining a soft and durable feel.
- Natural Fibre: The raffia fibre is a natural fibre. It has similar properties like bamboo and hemp fibres. The raffia fibre is obtained by peeling of raffia palm leaves and is soft, pliable, strong, durable, easy to dye and biodegradable making it an excellent material for weaving hats
- Cotton: Cotton fibres are natural hollow fibres; they are soft, cool, known as breathable fibres and absorbent. Cotton fibers can hold water 24-27 times their own weight. They are strong, dye absorbent and can stand up against abrasion wear and high temperature. In one word, cotton is comfortable.
- Felt: Is a textile material that is produced by matting, condensing and pressing fibres together. It is naturally resistant to heat, abrasion and mildew.
- Spot Cleaning: (Felt hats) Spot-clean your hat with a cloth, dampened with warm water if it becomes soiled.
- Please do not use any harsh, cleaning chemicals as this may damage the original quality of the hat.
- Allow to air dry by placing it in an open space. Please do not dry hats by putting in the dryer or using high heat, as this may also damage the quality of the hat.
- We do not recommend dry cleaning your hat as some inner-linings and brims may become distorted
- Always refer to each hat’s sew-in label for special instructions – If uncertain, please contact us.
- Polyester and Cotton hats can be fully submerged into cool water whilst Microfibre hats should not be entirely submerged as they might lose shape.
- Careful not to overwork the fabric or to brush too hard. Dab a hand brush with soft bristles in a solution of soap and cool water. Brush off any dirt in a circular motion to clean specific soiled areas.
- Always ensure that you use a mild soap or cleaning agent and avoid any harsh detergents.
- Air-drying is always recommended. Avoid any form of direct heat such as dryers. If any of the shape gets distorted, you can apply indirect heat with a steamer and pillowcase to protect the hat material and refresh its shape
