JUNE

TThere’s something about June that invites us to slow down and savor the moments that matter. Maybe it’s the longer evenings, the familiar sound of laughter drifting through open windows, or the way summer seems to loosen the grip of routine. We gather a little more often. We travel. We celebrate. We revisit traditions that have quietly become part of who we are while creating space for new memories to take shape alongside them.

As we worked through this issue, that sense of connection kept showing up again and again. You’ll find stories rooted in family, tradition, and the moments passed from one generation to the next. Stories that remind us how much wisdom, creativity, and identity are often shaped by the people who came before us.

Summer has a way of pulling us outside our usual pace and reminding us to make time for the people and experiences that fill us back up. Sometimes that looks like a weekend away, a family gathering, dinner shared around the table, or simply learning to appreciate slower moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

The other weekend, my husband Scott, my son Ty, and I attended a concert at the riverfront amphitheater together. Standing beside my 21-year-old son — now towering over me at 6’4” — I found myself watching another family nearby with a little boy who couldn’t have been older than eight or nine. For a moment, I was overwhelmed by how quickly time moves. It didn’t seem so long ago that we were that family, filling weekends with wrestling matches, basketball tournaments, and countless little moments that somehow became the memories I cherish most today.

This summer, before Ty begins his senior year of college, I find myself wanting to slow down and be fully present for every moment possible. Because if life has taught me anything, it’s that the ordinary days we rush through often become the ones we would give anything to relive later.

As you make your way through this issue, I hope you are encouraged to savor the season a little more fully. Buy the tickets. Take the trip. Stay at the table a little longer. Start the tradition. Because while summers may come and go quickly, the moments we create within them are often the ones that stay with us the longest.

When

Purpose, Passion, and Powerful Impact ART ON THE BORDER RETURNS

Each summer, Art on the Border brings more than beautiful works to Fort Smith—it brings people together around something bigger. Set for July 17–18, 2026, Art on the Border continues to grow as one of the River Valley’s most meaningful and anticipated events, where creativity meets community in a truly tangible way.

Hosted at the ACHE Research Institute Health & Wellness Center, this year’s event will feature more than 80 artists and artisans from across the region, offering an impressive range of mediums including oil, watercolor, sculpture, woodwork, jewelry, and hand-blown glass. Whether you’re a collector or simply enjoy viewing original art, there’s something here for everyone.

Aside from beautiful and unique art pieces, what continues to set Art on the Border apart is its purpose. Presented by the Classic Charitable Foundation, the event has raised nearly $2.9 million for local charities since its inception, an extraordinary impact that reflects the generosity of attendees and the heart behind the mission. In 2025, the event welcomed more than 1,400 guests and generated over $100,000 for area nonprofits!

This year’s beneficiaries include organizations that serve some of the most vital needs in our community, from healthcare and child advocacy to family support and, of course, the arts. Every piece

purchased, every donation made, and every sponsorship secured plays a role in supporting neighbors right here at home.

The weekend begins Friday evening with the Show Opening Party, where guests can meet the artists, preview offerings, and enjoy first access to purchase pieces in a relaxed, social setting. Saturday opens the doors to the public for a full day of browsing.

Over the years, Art on the Border has grown from a small event into a wellknown regional showcase, drawing artists and attendees who value quality and purpose. Although each year welcomes in new art, one thing remains unchanged: the mission to celebrate creativity while making a lasting difference.

Riverview HOPE Campus MEETING PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE

Riverview HOPE Campus serves Fort Smith’s homeless community through shelter, meals, case management, and supportive services focused on stability and self-sufficiency. Do South® recently reached out to learn more about the heart of the mission.

DS: What do people often misunderstand about the individuals you serve?

RHC: Every person who comes through our doors has a different story and different needs. Some may need help obtaining identification documents, transportation to a new job, or support rebuilding life skills. There is no one-sizefits-all solution, which is why we focus on individualized care and helping each guest move toward stability in a way that works for them.

DS: HOPE Campus operates as a low-barrier shelter. Why is that approach so important?

RHC: “Low barrier” means we do not turn people away because of where they came from or what challenges they may be facing. Many individuals arrive at HOPE Campus during some of the hardest moments of their lives. Our mission is to provide unconditional care, structure, and support while helping

guests work toward self-sufficiency at a pace that supports long-term growth and success.

DS: There’s a misconception that homelessness is caused by one single issue. What are some of the most common paths that lead someone to HOPE Campus?

RHC: Often, it’s what we call the “snowball effect.” Someone may lose a job, then lose insurance, experience an illness or injury, and suddenly the bills begin piling up faster than they can recover. Many of the individuals we serve were already living paycheck to paycheck with little or no support system before one unexpected hardship changed everything.

DS: How do you define success at HOPE Campus?

RHC: Success looks different for every person. Sometimes it starts with small but important steps, like taking a shower,

obtaining identification, or rebuilding trust. Other times it means securing employment, permanent housing, or maintaining sobriety. Some of our most meaningful full-circle moments happen when former guests return to volunteer and encourage others beginning their own journeys.

DS: What is the greatest need right now, and how can the community help?

RHC: More than anything, we hope the community continues leading with compassion. Many individuals who come to us feel unseen, unheard, and discouraged long before they arrive at HOPE Campus. Small acts of kindness, understanding, and support can make a big difference. It takes a community working together to help people rebuild confidence, stability, and hope.

MOSQUITO SEASON WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO STAY BITE-FREE

TThere’s something about an Arkansas summer evening— the hum of cicadas, the warmth lingering in the air, and, unfortunately, the unmistakable buzz of mosquitoes. Whether you’re at the lake, on the patio, or simply stepping outside at dusk, these tiny pests have a way of making their presence known. While mosquitoes are often dismissed as nothing more than a nuisance, they’re far more strategic—and in some cases, more concerning—than we tend to think.

WHY?

Mosquitoes don’t bite at random. In fact, only female mosquitoes bite, and they do so because they need protein from blood to produce eggs. What draws them in is a combination of body heat, carbon dioxide, and scent. Some people naturally attract more mosquitoes than others due to factors like body chemistry, sweat, and even blood type. If you’ve ever felt like you’re the one getting eaten alive while others are left alone, you’re probably right.

TIMING

Mosquitoes are most active during the early morning and evening hours, especially at dawn and dusk. However, shaded

areas and humid environments can keep them active throughout the day. Standing water is another major factor. From birdbaths and gutters to flowerpots and even small puddles, these areas create ideal breeding grounds, allowing mosquito populations to grow quickly.

PREVENTION

When used as directed, the most effective repellents are those approved by the EPA, including products containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Wearing light-colored clothing can make you less visible to mosquitoes, and using fans on patios or porches can help keep them away, as they are weak flyers. Around the home, eliminating standing water is one of the simplest and most impactful steps you can take.

THE BITES

Even with the best prevention, bites can still happen. When a mosquito bites, it’s not the bite itself that causes the itching and swelling—it’s your body’s reaction to the mosquito’s saliva. For most people, this results in a small, itchy bump that fades within a few days. But for others, the reaction can be much more intense.

THE REACTIONS

For some individuals, the reaction to a mosquito bite goes well beyond a small welt. A condition known as Skeeter syndrome is an allergic response to mosquito saliva that can cause more dramatic symptoms. Instead of a minor bump, the bite may swell significantly, becoming warm, firm, and sometimes painful. In some cases, the area can appear bruised or take on a darker, more inflamed look, which can be surprising if you’re not expecting it.

These reactions are more common in children, as well as in individuals with heightened sensitivities, and can develop within minutes to hours of a bite. The swelling may extend beyond the initial bite site and last for several days before gradually improving. While it can look concerning, Skeeter syndrome is typically not dangerous and does not indicate infection.

BITE MANAGEMENT

Managing the reaction usually involves simple at-home care. Applying a cold compress can help reduce swelling, while over-the-counter antihistamines can ease the body’s response, especially for those who tend to have stronger reactions to bites. For some, taking an antihistamine early can help minimize itching and inflammation before it worsens. Topical treatments, such as hydrocortisone cream or anti-itch lotions, can also provide relief. The most important step, however, is to avoid scratching. Breaking the skin can increase irritation and raise the risk of infection, turning a minor bite into a more uncomfortable issue.

While most bites are harmless, mosquitoes are capable of transmitting diseases such as West Nile virus, which is present in Arkansas and tends to surface during the warmer months. For the majority of people, symptoms are mild and may resemble a brief flu-like illness. In rare cases mosquito-borne viruses can lead to more serious complications, including inflammation of the brain, known as encephalitis, or inflammation of the surrounding tissues, called meningitis. While uncommon, they underscore the importance of prevention, especially for older adults and those with weakened immune systems.

It’s also important to recognize when a bite may need attention. Increasing redness, warmth, pus, or fever could signal an infection, particularly if the bite has been scratched repeatedly. While rare, severe allergic reactions can occur and should be treated as medical emergencies.

The good news is that with a few precautions, mosquitoes don’t have to take over your summer. By understanding what attracts them, when they’re most active, and how to protect yourself, you can spend more time enjoying the outdoors, and less time swatting at the air.

SMILES CONFIDENT

PROFILES IN DENTAL EXCELLENCE

BELLE POINT DENTAL

For many people, improving their smile is about far more than appearance. It’s about confidence, comfort, and feeling like the best version of themselves. At Belle Point Dental, that connection between oral health and self-confidence shapes the patient experience from the very first visit.

With a philosophy centered on personalized care and long-term relationships, the Belle Point Dental team takes time to understand each patient’s goals while creating treatment plans designed to feel natural, comfortable, and approachable. “We want patients to feel comfortable from the very beginning,” says Dr. Morton. “Every smile is different, and every patient deserves care that feels personalized to them.”

Among the most common cosmetic concerns the practice sees are discoloration, uneven or worn teeth, small chips, and spacing issues patients may have felt selfconscious about for years. According to Dr. Morton, most patients are looking for enhancements that look natural rather than overly dramatic.

One treatment Dr. Meredith especially enjoys incorporating into cosmetic care is Invisalign clear aligner therapy. In addition to creating a straighter smile, aligners can help improve crowding, spacing, bite concerns, and uneven wear while preserving healthy tooth structure.

“For many patients, it’s a very conservative option because we can improve the smile significantly without removing healthy tooth structure,” Dr. Meredith explains.

Belle Point Dental also offers veneers, crowns, whitening, and customized smile makeover treatments depending on each patient’s goals. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, the team focuses on education, communication, and helping patients feel confident throughout the process.

Technology also plays a major role in improving comfort and patient understanding. Advanced digital scanners and intraoral imaging allow patients to clearly see and better understand their oral health while often eliminating the need for traditional impressions. “Patients feel more informed and confident when they can actually visualize what’s happening,” Dr. Morton says.

Dr. Morton has cared for River Valley patients for years, building long-standing relationships rooted in consistency, compassion, and personalized care. As Dr. Meredith begins building those same connections within the community, the practice continues its commitment to patient-centered dentistry across generations.

For Dr. Meredith, dentistry also carries a personal connection. Growing up, she remembers feeling self-conscious about a gap between her front teeth before her own dentist and orthodontist transformed her smile — an experience that ultimately inspired her career path. “That experience showed me how powerful dentistry can be,” she says. “Even small changes can make a huge difference in how someone feels about themselves.”

At Belle Point Dental, the goal is never simply creating a beautiful smile. It’s helping patients feel comfortable, cared for, and confident long after they leave the office.

UDOUJ ORTHODONTICS

For more than five decades, Udouj Orthodontics has helped River Valley patients build healthy, confident smiles through personalized orthodontic care rooted in relationships and trust. Since opening in 1972, the practice has cared for multiple generations of local families, creating lasting connections that extend far beyond treatment alone.

While many people still associate braces with teenagers, today’s orthodontic care serves patients of all ages. At Udouj Orthodontics, adults are increasingly seeking treatment to correct shifting teeth, improve bite function, or finally invest in the smile they have always wanted. Whether using traditional braces or Invisalign® clear aligners, the team focuses on helping each patient find an option that fits naturally into their lifestyle.

“Straight teeth are about more than appearance,” the team explains. “When everything is aligned properly, it becomes easier to maintain

oral health and improve bite function, but the confidence patients gain is often the most rewarding part.”

That confidence is something the team witnesses every day, from children seeing their new smile for the first time to adults who finally feel comfortable smiling in photos, social situations, and professional settings. Advances in technology have also made treatment more efficient, comfortable, and discreet than many patients expect, helping simplify the orthodontic experience from start to finish.

At the heart of the practice is a commitment to one-on-one care. From the first consultation through the final appointment, patients are guided through every step with personal attention, open communication, and a strong sense of community connection. “In a town like Fort Smith, relationships matter,” the team shares. “We want every patient to feel cared for like family.”

MOORE DENTAL CARE

For more than six decades, Moore Dental Care has served River Valley families with a philosophy centered on trust, compassion, and patient-first care. Founded in 1964 by Dr. Bill Moore, the practice has built a lasting reputation not only for comprehensive dentistry, but also for helping patients uncover the often-overlooked causes behind chronic jaw pain, headaches, bite dysfunction, and related health concerns.

Today, Dr. Wes Moore continues that legacy with a specialized focus on TMJ disorders and bite alignment, combining decades of advanced post-graduate training with sophisticated diagnostic technology designed to identify the root causes of pain rather than simply treating symptoms. His approach reflects a belief that oral health plays a much larger role in overall wellness than many people realize.

“For years, dentistry and medicine have often been treated separately,” Dr. Moore explains. “But the mouth can reveal important signs connected to overall health, from periodontal disease and airway concerns to sleep-disordered breathing and systemic inflammation.”

TMJ disorders, in particular, are frequently misunderstood or left undiagnosed for years. Many patients experience jaw pain, popping, headaches, neck tension, ear discomfort, or difficulty chewing without realizing their bite may be contributing to the problem. According to Dr. Moore, some cases can even stem from jaw injuries or trauma that occurred decades earlier. “People are often surprised to learn how connected the jaw joint is to everyday function and comfort,” he says. “Many patients have adapted to pain over time without realizing treatment options may be available.”

That emphasis on precise diagnosis is what led Dr. Moore to develop the MooreRelief™ Method, an approach that utilizes advanced technology such as Joint Vibration Analysis (JVA), Electromyography (EMG), digital imaging, MRIs, and computerized bite analysis to evaluate jaw dysfunction with a high level of accuracy. Rather than relying on generalized assumptions, treatment plans are carefully tailored to each patient’s specific needs and symptoms.

Dr. Moore’s commitment to continuing education has also played a major role in shaping the practice’s philosophy. Over the years, he has traveled extensively to study alongside leading experts across multiple areas of dentistry, continually refining his understanding of TMJ disorders, bite alignment, and functional care. “I’ve always believed a dental degree gives you a license to keep learning,” Dr. Moore says. “Improving knowledge and skills has never been optional.”

For patients who have spent years searching for answers, the impact of treatment can be life changing. Relief from jaw soreness, headaches, facial tension, and discomfort while eating often allows patients to return to activities and routines they had gradually learned to avoid.

2913 S. 74th Street, Fort Smith, AR 479.484.5050 mooredentalcare.com

One phrase patients frequently repeat after finding relief has become especially meaningful to Dr. Moore: “Eat what you want, not just what you can.” Even after more than sixty years serving the River Valley, the mission at Moore Dental Care remains rooted in the same values on which the practice was founded: listening carefully, treating patients with compassion, and helping people live more comfortably through thoughtful, individualized care.

DRS. MOORE AND NAGRAMPA

Real Answers. Healthier Smiles.

We asked our featured dental professionals to share insights on some of the questions patients ask most. Their answers reflect years of experience, advanced training, and a shared commitment to personalized patient care.

What would you say to someone who is self-conscious about their smile?

Growing up, I had a large gap between my two front teeth, which affected my confidence. My dentist and orthodontist transformed my smile. That experience is a big part of why I became a dentist! I want every patient to know they deserve to feel proud of their smile, and we’re here to help them in a way that feels personalized, comfortable, and natural. – Dr. Meredith

What’s the biggest misconception you hear when someone is considering orthodontic treatment?

Many people still think braces are just for kids or that treatment is going to take several years and be uncomfortable. The truth is that orthodontics have come a long way in the last 20 years! Today’s options are more efficient, comfortable, and discreet than most people expect due to advances in technology, the materials we use, and treatment options.

What are some of the most common signs that a patient’s bite may be out of alignment?

One of the earliest is clicking or popping when opening and closing the mouth, which may indicate joint cartilage damage. Other symptoms can include jaw pain or soreness, locking of the jaw, muscle tightness, headaches, neck or shoulder tension, and discomfort when chewing. Many patients even begin avoiding chewy foods because pain often follows.

MORE ANSWERS TO COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What should patients look for when choosing a provider?

When choosing a dental provider, look for someone you trust and feel comfortable communicating with. The right dental home should never feel intimidating. Pay attention to whether the provider listens to your goals, explains options clearly, and makes you feel respected throughout the process. The best outcomes come from relationships built on trust and understanding. — Dr. Morton

How have advancements in technology or techniques improved results and patient comfort?

We use advanced intraoral imaging and digital scanners to help patients clearly see and better understand their oral health and treatment options. This technology builds confidence and trust while also improving comfort and efficiency. In many cases, digital scanning eliminates the need for traditional impressions, creating a smoother, more comfortable experience for patients. — Dr. Meredith

How do you help patients choose what is best for their lifestyle and goals?

At Udouj Orthodontics, we keep the process simple and personalized. During consultations, we take time to understand each patient’s goals, routine, and lifestyle before recommending treatment options. Whether it’s traditional braces or Invisalign clear aligners, we help patients choose an option that fits naturally into their everyday life.

For someone who has been putting off treatment, what would you say to encourage them to take that first step?

We encourage patients to simply come in for a conversation. There is no pressure, just an opportunity to learn what treatment options may be available. Many patients leave their first consultation wishing they had started sooner. Taking that first step often feels like the hardest part, but it quickly becomes much easier once you begin.

What do patients typically say after they begin treatment and start finding relief?

Many patients tell me they finally feel like themselves again after years of discomfort. Relief from jaw pain, headaches, and soreness can truly change daily life. Many patients are surprised by how connected TMJ symptoms can be to sleep quality, stress, posture, and overall well-being. One phrase I hear often has become especially meaningful to me: “Eat what you want, not just what you can.”

What would

you say to someone

who has tried other solutions but still hasn’t found answers?

Don’t give up. Many patients spend years searching for answers before discovering their symptoms may be connected to TMJ or bite dysfunction. With the right diagnosis and treatment approach, relief may still be possible, and the dentist may become your greatest resource in finally finding answers. Sometimes even small adjustments or a fresh perspective can make a significant difference in long-term comfort.

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE

irls Inc. of Fort Smith has been serving Fort Smith and the surrounding River Valley for more than 90 years, creating opportunities for girls to build lifelong friendships, confidence, skills, and strengths through programs including team sports, summer camps, mentorship, and educational enrichment. Through the Girls Inc. experience, professionally trained staff and dedicated volunteers provide safe spaces and meaningful programming designed to address the unique challenges girls face while equipping them with the tools to succeed.

At the heart of that mission is Women of Vision, a membership-based organization unique to the Fort Smith chapter of Girls Inc. Formed more than a decade ago, this inspiring group of women supports the organization through the giving of their time, talents, and treasures. Today, Women of Vision is nearly 50 members strong, made up of women who embody leadership, passion, and a deep commitment to empowering girls in the community.

The impact of Women of Vision can be seen directly through Girls Inc.’s outreach efforts in three elementary schools and two middle schools. As the group continues to grow, so

does the organization’s ability to expand partnerships and reach more girls throughout the community, encouraging them to be strong, smart, and bold.

The organization’s upcoming Women of Vision Luncheon on June 25, 2026, is held in honor of these dedicated women and serves as a celebration of their continued support and impact on the lives of local girls. The luncheon will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the ACHE Research Institute Health & Wellness Center in Fort Smith.

This year’s featured speaker is Kelsi Musick, newly named head women’s basketball coach for the University of Arkansas. Musick was hired in March 2025 following a successful coaching tenure at Oral Roberts University, where she led the program to consecutive 20-win seasons and helped build one of the nation’s top-scoring offenses. Known for her leadership, player development, and passion for mentoring young women, Musick’s message aligns closely with the mission of Girls Inc. and the values Women of Vision strives to inspire throughout the River Valley.

The luncheon will recognize the women who help support Girls Inc.’s mission and raise awareness and support for programs that continue making a lasting difference in the lives of girls across the community. Individual tickets for the luncheon are $40, and corporate sponsor tables for eight are available for $500. A virtual silent auction will also be part of the event.

Grandma Had It Going On

From needlepoint and quilting to mahjong nights, younger generations are rediscovering the joy of creating, gathering, and slowing down.

If you were lucky, you grew up with a grandmother nearby. Maybe she taught you to draw, or cook, or quilt. Perhaps she was the “fun” grandma who let you stay up late, playing cards or board games, or lying outside on a blanket looking at the stars.

Every good grandmother is different, but the nostalgia they invoke is universal. Lately, the culture has taken note. The granny chic aesthetic is showing up in clothing and home décor. And the hobbies grandmothers enjoyed are being rediscovered by a generation turning off their digital devices to connect in real life.

There is a framed needlepoint rendering of a rooster that hangs in Mackenzie King’s parents’ Fort Smith home. The piece was created by Mackenzie’s greatgrandmother in 1960 and is one of the family’s most prized possessions.

Both of her great-grandmothers were talented crafters, and Mackenzie tried her hand at quilting and cross-stitch. But it wasn’t until 2019, when she was about to graduate from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, that she picked up her first needlepoint canvas. It was a small door hanger, the perfect project for someone teaching herself. Before she was halfway finished, Mackenzie was hooked, so she kept on learning.

Needlepoint appealed to something deeper than creativity alone. Mackenzie describes herself as more crafty than artistic, someone drawn to making things by hand. “I’ve always been drawn to needle and thread,” she says. “I think there’s something in my blood that has always pulled me to it.”

Though her great-grandmother passed when Mackenzie was young, the pieces she left behind made lasting impressions. Two large, stitched renditions of the famous paintings Blue Boy and Pinkie still hang in her grandparents’ home, captivating Mackenzie long before she fully understood the work and patience required to create them.

“I think it took me some years before I realized she actually made them herself

by hand,” Mackenzie says. “They were beautiful to me before

I knew how special they really were.”
MACKENZIE KING

Today, Mackenzie designs many of her own canvases, blending Arkansas pride with a modern needlepoint revival that has found an enthusiastic younger audience. Some designs begin as sketches, others digitally mapped on her iPad, and some are hand-painted. Her growing collection includes Razorback designs, sorority canvases, Southern imagery, and Arkansas landmarks stitched with a sense of familiarity only a local would fully recognize.

“For a long time, there really wasn’t much representation of Arkansas in needlepoint,” she says. “I wanted stitchers here to feel like there was someone designing things that reflected their culture and what matters to them.”

Needlepoint designs are typically painted onto sturdy canvases, providing stitchers with a visual, color-coded map for their yarn, and instructional videos are available online. There are patterns for products ranging from luggage tags and eyeglass cases to wall hangings and elaborate Christmas tree skirts.

Small projects provide a fairly quick return on investment, such as the bag tag featuring Bear Bryant’s fedora that Mackenzie created for her boyfriend. “He went to Alabama, and he’s a big Bear Bryant fan,” Mackenzie says.

In October 2025, Mackenzie opened her online shop, Natural State Needlepoint. A sampling of her designs includes Razorback canvases, animals of the South, the state capitol building, a gorgeous rendition of Hawksbill Crag on the Buffalo River, Old Main on the U of A campus, and Oaklawn. A surprising element of her business is designing and teaching needlepoint to college sororities, proving that the craft is resonating with younger people.

Makenzie says the first brick-and-mortar needlepoint shops in recent Arkansas history, The Fancy Stitch in Sheridan, and Gracefully Stitched in Little Rock, opened in 2025. She knows of at least two more shops in Bentonville and Conway that will open soon. Fresh, modern needlework designs seem to be driving the trend.

Many women are really grateful to find a hobby that is totally analog. People are overwhelmed by all the things demanding attention during the day, and this is a very peaceful escape.

asks participants to unplug. Stitch by stitch, row by row, the process rewards patience instead of speed. “There’s something fulfilling about being able to say, ‘Look at this thing I created,’” Mackenzie says. “It’s beautiful and meaningful to me, and maybe my grandchildren will inherit it someday.

“My mom started needlepoint when she was in college for the first time, and she stopped because she didn’t see any designs that were worth her time. Now, she has to restrain herself from purchasing more than she could reasonably stitch."

Mackenzie believes younger generations are gravitating toward hobbies like needlepoint for a reason. In a world dominated by notifications, screens, and constant stimulation, the slow rhythm of stitching offers something rare: focus.

“Many women are really grateful to find a hobby that is totally analog,” she says. “People are overwhelmed by all the things demanding attention during the day, and this is a very peaceful escape.”

The resurgence may have gained traction online through TikTok and Instagram, but the hobby itself

Seven years ago, Mackenzie bought a needlepoint canvas on a whim, and it changed her life, like it has so many others. In homes, museums, and palaces across the world, examples of the craft can be found. Even Martha Washington, when tasked with overseeing Mount Vernon, created twelve needlepoint chair cushions. Before she died, she gave at least one of them to her granddaughter. It is now on display at Tudor Place in Washington, D.C.

In time, Mackenzie plans to stitch an heirloom of her own, one that will last a multitude of lifetimes. More than trends or aesthetics, Mackenzie hopes the revival of needlepoint creates stronger connections between generations. She loves seeing younger women sit beside older stitchers, sharing techniques, stories, and time together.

“Every generation tends to write off the wisdom of older ones,” she says. “This hobby has become a way for younger women to start listening again.” Such is the power of needlepoint.

Needlepoint may be having a moment, but it isn’t the only pastime younger generations are rediscovering. Across the River Valley, sewing machines are humming again, quilting classes are filling up, and game tables are bringing strangers together as people search for hobbies that feel more personal, creative, and connected.

Like needlepoint, many so-called “grandma hobbies” offer something increasingly rare: the chance to slow down long enough to make something, learn something, or simply spend uninterrupted time with other people.

At Central Sewing Center in Fort Smith, Karen Ward and Lynne Lukas are seeing younger generations embrace sewing, quilting, and embroidery in surprising ways. Some students want to customize clothing or make gifts, while others are learning practical skills that allow them to create things for themselves and their families. “We have several families that homeschool, and sewing is a great activity for them,” Karen says.

For many participants, the appeal goes beyond practicality. Sewing and quilting offer a creative outlet in a fast-moving world, one that rewards patience and imagination instead of speed. “There’s a thrill in quilting when a creation comes to life,” Lynne says. “There’s a picture in your head, and to see it in 3D is very satisfying.”

For others, the appeal of these hobbies has less to do with making something by hand and more to do with gathering together around a table and learning something new.

Mahjong, a tile-based game that originated in China, has found a growing audience in the River Valley through River Valley Mahj, founded by Angela Jones. What began as a personal interest quickly evolved into lessons, social play events, and gatherings that bring together players of all ages.

“The challenge of learning the game was enough to entice me to keep playing,” Angela says. “But I also appreciate how the game creates opportunities for connection.”

Angela has seen women in their teens and women in their eighties seated at the same table, talking, laughing, and learning together. “It’s a great way to reset your brain after a long week,” she says, “or make sure you spend quality time with people during a busy season of life.”

Granny hobbies encompass what’s best about our communities. The time and intention to be creative. The drive to learn new things. The desire to meet people who could become your next best friend. We should have been listening to Granny all along.

Family Tradition

A shared legacy of toughness, competition, and faith connects Brenda Frederiksen and her son JD across generations of athletics.

As proud mothers are prone to do, Brenda Frederiksen likes to tell a story that illustrates how she knew her son, JD, would be an exceptional golfer one day.

“I remember his first tournament, where the parents got to caddy for their kids,” she says. “JD’s dad was caddying for him and we're on this last hole and JD’s on the green. The two of them are waiting to putt until the other kids got on the green. Well, the other kids are going from one sand trap to the next sand trap, and they're going back and forth. It was like a tennis match. JD looked at his dad and he says, ‘Dad, why are they doing that?’ All he knew was it was his turn to putt.”

A lot of rounds have transpired since then, by which JD has gone from mere protégé — another well-worn family tale is how he won his first tournament at age three, playing against six-year-olds — to steadily growing into his potential on the links. While at Van Buren High School, JD placed second in the conference his junior year and won conference senior year, going on to place fourth at the 5A state tourney and earn all-conference and all-state accolades.

From there he realized his dream of playing golf at the collegiate level where he’s a sophomore at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. Like all elite

JD FREDERIKSEN

athletes, he continues to learn the value of a strong mental game as a key complement to physical attributes and technical skills.

“I definitely can tell you that multiple times, as a young kid, I would get very frustrated playing golf. Very frustrated,” he says. “Actually, it was something I had to work on as I got older because I realized that your mental game is probably the most important asset you can have. I definitely would say that's probably my most valuable asset now. I've worked so hard on that and having the mindset of next shot, next shot, next shot, what happened before doesn't matter. It's very valuable.”

One doesn’t have to look very far to see where JD’s mental toughness comes from. His mother is herself a former standout athlete who, after a decorated high school career in basketball, softball and track, played college basketball including one year at what was then Westark. Having a former college jock for a mother helped JD develop the mental toughness to deal with the pressure and demands that come with playing at a higher level.

“With basketball, you just have to be tough,” she says. “You know, you get knocked down, you get hit in the nose. I've had black eyes, I've had it all. Having four brothers probably helped a little bit with that toughness.

“In golf, there's just no time to think about your bad shot and so with (JD) growing up, it was always, ‘Just dust yourself off. Get up. Let's go. You don't have time to think about that, go find the ball and hit it again.’”

Besides their choice of college and sports, mother and son have other things in common despite playing eras that are very different from one another. Brenda played for Greenwood High School back in the 1980s, a time before kids specialized in one sport and played it year-round. Competition was limited to school sports programs, without the traveling teams and AAU clubs that dominate the landscape today.

Not only that, the number of sports and leagues for girls were fewer back then, which caused the shooting guard to make the most of what was in front of her. She was named both all conference and all state in her junior and senior years at GHS, during the latter of which she led her team to the state basketball quarterfinals. As a player she was defined by her mental and physical toughness, and a driving desire to prove herself.

“I was good at the high school level, and I was also, I think, pretty good at the collegiate level, but I wasn't ever a highly sought-after player,” she says. “I actually wasn’t recruited by the coach at the time who was at Westark; I was recruited by Eastern Oklahoma State College, which was in the same conference. So, I played my first year for the competition.”

Brenda enjoyed the experience, but after her first year the school was forced to make budget cuts, which it did starting with scholarships for out-ofstate students. Not coming from a wealthy family, she headed for campus in Fort Smith, figuring she’d played her last collegiate game and would have to settle for being a regular college student putting herself through school.

Signing up for classes, she met up with Doc Sadler, a Greenwood native who now coaches at Kansas and who was at that time an assistant on the Westark staff.

“He's like, ‘What are you doing here?’ And I said, ‘Well, I'm registering for school,’” Brenda says. “He goes, ‘Are you gonna play basketball?’ And

"Your mental game is probably the most important asset you can have."
JD FREDERIKSEN
BRENDA FREDERIKSEN

I'm like, ‘No, I'm not.’ He goes, ‘Oh, no, you gotta play basketball.’” Sadler marched her over to his colleague's office and announced she deserved a roster spot. The head coach, Louis Whorton, was skeptical.

“Coach Whorton says, ‘Well, I don't have a scholarship for you. I've got this girl from Memphis coming in, I've got a girl from Chicago coming in,’” she says. “‘I've already got all these girls, great players, and if you get to play any time at all you'll be doing a hell of a job.’

“I thought to myself, ‘OK, I'll take that challenge.’ I started every game and by Christmas, I was on scholarship.”

Brenda was so dominant, she’d signed to play her last two years of college ball at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia — Westark was a two-year school back then — while she finished her business administration degree. But she’d made her point and hung up her

“I signed to go play at Henderson, but I was really done at that point,” she says with a chuckle. “Coach Whorton and I kidded each other before he passed. I always told him, ‘You know, I was tired of overweight, baldheaded old men telling me what to do and that’s why

Years later, she and her husband Jerry got the joy of watching JD grow into his own sports passion, determined to let him pick the game that spoke to him loudest. But that doesn’t mean they didn’t drop a few

“JD’s dad, Jerry, has been playing longer than I have, and he’s a great golfer; I had just started learning to play the month before we met," Brenda says. “JD had a golf club in his hand from the time he was a baby, literally,” she says. “I mean, we have a picture of him crawling around the house before he could walk with these plastic golf clubs.”

“Honestly, I can’t remember when I didn’t play golf because my family played a ton and they would just bring me to the golf course all the time,” JD says. “I remember I was so young I didn't have the energy to play all eighteen so I’d play nine and then I'd sit in the back of the golf

“I just enjoyed being out there, the beauty of the golf course and hearing the birds and the sun shining. I really enjoyed it and so as I got older, I kept playing and I knew this is really something I love to do.”

The decision to attend UAFS happened similarly; JD recalls growing up on campus, attending sporting events and other happenings, so the school already felt like home. His decision to stay put has allowed his family to be involved with his athletic career, but Brenda sees it as something more.

“JD is blessed with great talent and he's using that to his fullest, but we couldn't have orchestrated this. It definitely was a God thing,” she says. “I think about my meeting up with Doc at the student union that day and how things have just unfolded from there. It’s a huge blessing and it’s been really, really fun.”

COTILLION IS AN ART

words DO SOUTH // images GREENWOOD JUNIOR COTILLION and BAILEE MATTOX

At Greenwood Junior Cotillion, the evening begins before students ever step through the door. Young gentlemen escort their partners from the car, introductions are made with handshakes and eye contact, and nervous smiles slowly give way to confidence as music fills the room. “It’s meant to feel like an occasion,” says founder Mary Ann Sandifer.

For more than two decades, Greenwood Junior Cotillion has introduced students in grades three through eight to social dance, etiquette, conversation skills, and confidence-building lessons designed to last far beyond childhood. High school students who once participated in the program often return as team leaders, guiding younger students through the same experiences that shaped them years earlier.

What surprises many parents most, Mary Ann says, is how quickly hesitant students begin looking forward to each month’s event. “It’s not a competition,” she explains. “It’s a social setting. They’re making friends, gaining confidence, and having fun.” That confidence often grows fastest on the dance floor. During social dance instruction, students rotate partners frequently, creating an environment where no one feels excluded or left behind. For many students, especially boys, simply learning to step forward and ask someone to dance becomes a milestone in itself.

“We create an atmosphere where everyone feels included,” Mary Ann explains. “Once they realize they’ll be welcomed, they become much more comfortable.” The lessons learned at cotillion often find their way home as well. Parents have shared stories of children suddenly setting the dinner table without being asked or showing greater confidence

in everyday social situations. For Mary Ann, those small moments matter just as much as mastering proper etiquette.

A former student, former Arkansas Razorback quarterback Tyler Wilson, later shared how valuable those lessons became during formal dinners and donor events throughout his college football career. Because of his cotillion training, he felt prepared and comfortable in situations many of his teammates found intimidating. “It gave him confidence,” says Mary Ann. “That’s what this is really about.”

Throughout the season, themed evenings and special traditions help students feel relaxed and engaged, from costume nights to Grandparents Night, where generations gather on the dance floor together. Some of Mary Ann’s favorite moments are captured in photographs — students smiling with grandparents, fathers dancing with daughters, and friendships forming in real time.

For Mary Ann, the program has always been about more than manners alone. “I hope they leave with happy memories, confidence, kindness, and the knowledge of the right thing to do,” she says.

In a fast-paced digital world, Greenwood Junior Cotillion offers something increasingly rare: a face-to-face connection, intentional conversation, and the confidence that comes from learning how to treat others with respect. “Cotillion is an art,” Mary Ann says. “And it’s something worth preserving.”

For information on upcoming classes, visit Greenwood Junior Cotillion’s Facebook page or call Mary Ann at 479.650.2373.

Advanced Solutions for Hair Loss.

When thinning or shedding begins, the experience can feel overwhelming. Johnson Dermatology takes a personalized approach to diagnosing and treating hair loss, helping patients better understand the cause while exploring options designed to support both hair health and overall well-being.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS THAT SOMEONE SHOULD SEEK EVALUATION FOR HAIR THINNING OR LOSS?

Signs can include increased shedding, a widening part, reduced hair volume, or noticing more scalp visibility over time. If your ponytail feels thinner than it once did or you’re seeing gradual changes in fullness, it’s a good idea to seek evaluation early. The sooner we identify the cause, the more treatment options are typically available.

WHAT MAKES CLINICAL TRIALS SO UNIQUE?

Clinical trials give patients access to emerging therapies that are not yet widely available. Participants also receive close monitoring and detailed follow-up care throughout the process. For many, it's a no-cost opportunity to explore innovative treatment options while helping advance future care for others experiencing hair loss. Eligible participants may also receive compensation for their time.

Beauty, Guided by Experience.

With more options than ever in aesthetic and cosmetic treatments, many patients are seeking results that feel refreshed, natural, and aligned with their personal goals. At Passmore Plastic Surgery, patient education, comfort, and individualized care remain at the center of the experience.

HOW DO YOU HELP PATIENTS DETERMINE IF A SURGICAL OR NON-SURGICAL OPTION IS RIGHT FOR THEM?

It starts with fully understanding their goals. Technology provides a night-and-day difference from just a few years ago. Today, many patients can experience excellent outcomes for both face and body with in-office treatments. If a surgical solution is needed, those procedures are generally outpatient and require little downtime.

HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE RESULTS THAT FEEL NATURAL AND ALIGN WITH A PATIENT’S GOALS?

I rely on my training and expertise, but most of all, I listen. Patients come to me with something about their appearance that bothers them; it’s a confidence blocker. By genuinely listening, I can guide them to their desired improvement. My 25+ years of surgical experience helps make that improvement look and feel natural.

Surgical Expertise. Natural Beauty.

Cosmetic surgery is deeply personal and requires both surgical expertise and attention to detail. With decades of experience in plastic and cosmetic surgery, Dr. James E. Kelly III approaches each procedure with precision, balance, and an emphasis on refined, natural-looking outcomes tailored to the individual.

WHAT DEFINES EXCELLENT COSMETIC SURGERY RESULTS?

Excellent cosmetic surgery should enhance overall balance and proportion without appearing obvious or overdone. Achieving that requires careful surgical planning, technical precision, and experience. The best results are often subtle, refined improvements that complement a patient’s natural features rather than dramatically changing them.

WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT THIS FIELD OF MEDICINE?

One of the most rewarding aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery is helping patients regain confidence and improve their quality of life. Whether restoring function, correcting a physical concern, or helping someone feel more comfortable in their appearance, it’s a tremendous responsibility and privilege to be part of that process.

Since 1996, Dr. James E. Kelly Ill has been a leading physician and independent surgeon specializing in plastic, hand, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgery. Board-certified and fellowship-trained, Dr. Kelly helps patients regain mobility, self-esteem, and confidence.

Life in Balance MIRAVAL RESORTS & SPAS

words BOB ROBINSON // images courtesy MIRAVAL RESORTS & SPAS

Sometimes, the hectic lifestyle of working and raising a family can become overwhelming. With summer approaching, adding even more activities to your busy schedule, this might be a good time to treat yourself to a relaxing getaway.

A place where you can unplug from the hustle and bustle, slow the pace, and reconnect with yourself. Such a place exists just over half a day’s drive from the River Valley in Austin, Texas.

WELCOME TO MIRAVAL

Miraval Resorts & Spas emerged in 1995 with a unique vision. Through part experiment and part personal dream, the family-owned business developed a blend of mindful meditation and physical activity to help their clientele achieve balance in life.

As you enter the resort’s heavy oak front gates, you leave the “civilized” world behind. Literally, because this is a no-cell phone facility. There are limited cell-use areas, but Miraval encourages visitors to step away from phones and other daily stressors to create a deeper sense of clarity and connection.

Prior to arrival, guests sign onto the Miraval website to reserve their activity sessions. By scheduling activities in advance, guests can begin their Miraval experience immediately upon arrival.

Guests can begin the day with movement and mindfulness classes ranging from stretching and barre to meditation, breathwork, and yoga practices designed to encourage balance, energy, and presence. Whether focusing on physical wellness or mental clarity, the sessions invite guests to slow down and reconnect.

Culinary activities range from smoothie workshops focused on balanced nutrition to honey tastings exploring how environment and bee behavior influence flavor and color.

Like many Miraval sessions, these events are offered as social gatherings, providing guests with an environment for interaction and exchange of shared experiences. The gatherings also provide practical wellness tips guests can continue incorporating at home.

Come lunch, the elaborate buffet offers guests the option to serve themselves or order from a menu. As with everything else at Miraval, the food is expertly prepared and delicious. Meals and gratuity are included with your stay. Following lunch, guests can choose to lounge at one of two outdoor pools and jacuzzies, return to their rooms, follow the mindful path of a labyrinth, or select another activity.

There are several informative activities offered at the adjoining Cypress Creek Farm. Many find the connections they form with animals therapeutic and soothing. Additional activities and lectures covering beekeeping, vegetable greens, and poultry raising are professionally tailored to foster a closer connection with nature.

Other outdoor activities, such as hatchet throwing, slacklining, and archery, are designed to challenge visitors to try something new. Many leave surprised by what they were willing, and able, to try.

The truly adventurous visitors will enjoy Miraval’s challenge course. The elevated course features climbing nets, suspended bridges, log crossings, tightropes, and a zipline soaring up to 30 feet above the ground. For many, simply attempting the course after years of being led to believe they could not participate in such feats is rewarding. Those not interested in physical challenges can choose from other creative outlets, including handcrafts, music, performance, and visual arts.

In line with Miraval’s theme of teaching “Life in Balance,” the resort offers a wide variety of spa treatments. Ginger oil-infused deep tissue massages, foot reflexology, transformative

experiences that embrace the relaxing weightlessness of water, and many other holistic experiences designed to encourage relaxation and inner wellness.

“Miraval meets the guest where they are at on their wellness journey,” shares General Manager Kim Rossi on the Miraval experience. “Some guests find wellness in familiar activities, while others get curious and try things that are new to them. Miraval, a pioneer in wellness journeys, makes wellbeing accessible, interesting, and fun!”

At Miraval, wellness is less about perfection and more about balance; it’s a chance to step away from everyday demands and return home feeling restored.

Miraval Resorts and Spas are located in Texas, Arizona, the Berkshires, and the Red Sea. Visit them online at miravalresorts.com or call 855.690.8163.

CHICKEN SLIDERS Hot Honey

Pickle Slaw with

Sweet heat meets summer comfort in these Hot Honey Chicken Sliders with Pickle Slaw. Crispy chicken drizzled with a touch of hot honey and paired with a tangy, crunchy slaw, creates the perfect balance of flavor in every bite.

Ingredients

for the chicken

° 1 lb. chicken tenders or small chicken breasts

° 1 cup buttermilk

° 1 cup flour

° ½ cup cornstarch

° 1 teaspoon paprika

° 1 teaspoon garlic powder

° salt & pepper

° oil, for frying

° slider buns

° sliced pickles, for topping

for the hot honey

° ½ cup honey

° 1–2 teaspoons red pepper flakes

for the pickle slaw

° 2 cups cabbage, shredded

° ¼ cup dill pickles, chopped

° 2 Tablespoons pickle juice

° 2 Tablespoons mayo

° 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Method

Marinate chicken in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes. In a bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, and seasonings. Dredge chicken and fry until golden and crispy.

Warm honey and stir in red pepper flakes to create hot honey. Toss slaw ingredients together until combined.

Assemble sliders with crispy chicken, a scoop of pickle slaw, sliced pickles, and a drizzle of hot honey.

RANCH WATER Watermelon Mint

There’s nothing quite like watermelon in the summer, and this cocktail captures that fresh, juicy flavor with just the right balance of citrus and bubbles.

Ingredients

(serves 1)

° 2 oz. silver tequila

° 1 oz. lime juice, fresh

° 2 oz. watermelon juice, fresh (muddled, strained)

° sparkling mineral water (we like Topo Chico Lime with Mint)

° 3–4 fresh mint leaves

° sea salt

Method

Muddle watermelon and mint in a shaker. Add tequila, lime juice, and ice. Shake until chilled. Strain into a glass over fresh ice, add more mint leaves, top with sparkling water, and a pinch of sea salt. Garnish as desired.

Tip: Love watermelon as much as we do? Add additional watermelon to taste for a deeper color and fuller fruit flavor; adjust the tequila as desired to maintain balance.

FOUR DESTINATIONS TO EXPERIENCE FULLY

As summer settles in, the pull to explore often grows stronger. For some, that means planning a quick escape filled with sunshine, scenery, and time away from routine. For others, it’s the excitement of looking ahead — researching destinations, imagining future adventures, and building a travel wish list that stretches far beyond the season itself.

Whether you’re packing a suitcase now or simply gathering inspiration for the months ahead, travel has a way of giving us something meaningful to anticipate.

Planning the right trip doesn’t have to feel complicated. Working with experienced professionals, like locally owned Kelly Co Travel, can help simplify the details while creating an experience tailored to the way you want to explore.

This month’s destinations offer four vastly different ways to experience the world, from dramatic natural landscapes and coastal charm to vibrant culture and unforgettable scenery. Each one invites travelers to slow down, explore fully, and create memories that last well beyond the journey home.

ICELAND

IDEAL STAY: 5–8 days

BEST TIME TO GO: June–September

WHY IT WORKS: Waterfalls, geothermal lagoons, dramatic landscapes, outdoor adventure

PERFECT FOR: Adventure travelers, couples, photographers, nature lovers

Iceland feels otherworldly from the moment you arrive. Towering waterfalls, black sand beaches, volcanic terrain, and steaming geothermal springs create a landscape that feels dramatic, peaceful, and unlike anywhere else. During the summer months, extended daylight hours allow travelers to experience more of the country’s striking scenery without feeling rushed.

Much of the experience revolves around exploration. Scenic drives along the South Coast reveal waterfalls, glacier views, and rugged coastline, while geothermal lagoons like the Blue Lagoon and Sky Lagoon offer moments to slow down and recharge. Reykjavik brings a different energy, blending colorful architecture, Nordic design, and a growing food scene into a city that feels both modern and approachable.

The country delivers a sense of wonder that stays with you long after the trip ends. If you are looking for adventure balanced with simplicity, Iceland awaits.

LAKE TAHOE, CALIFORNIA & NEVADA

IDEAL STAY:  4–6 days

BEST TIME TO GO: June–September

WHY IT WORKS:

Alpine scenery, lake activities, hiking, summer adventure

PERFECT FOR: Families, couples, outdoor enthusiasts, active travelers

Surrounded by pine forests and mountain peaks, Lake Tahoe's striking blue water creates a backdrop that draws visitors outdoors from sunrise to sunset. The region blends natural beauty with a laid-back mountain atmosphere, making it easy to balance activity and relaxation throughout the trip.

Days are often spent on the water, whether boating, paddleboarding, kayaking, or simply enjoying one of Tahoe’s many beaches. Hiking trails wind through forests and scenic overlooks, while nearby towns offer lakefront dining, local shops, and casual gathering spots that keep the pace comfortable and approachable. Evenings tend to center on sunsets over the water, cooler mountain air, and time spent outdoors.

Lake Tahoe appeals to travelers who want adventure without sacrificing comfort. Its combination of alpine scenery, outdoor recreation, and relaxed summer energy creates a destination that feels refreshing from start to finish.

WHY IT WORKS:

Coastal charm, historic mansions, sailing, walkable waterfront

Newport captures the timeless appeal of a New England summer with its coastal scenery, historic architecture, and relaxed waterfront atmosphere. Known for its grand Gilded Age mansions and sailing culture, the city blends elegance and charm in a way that feels refined without being overly formal.

Days in Newport naturally revolve around the water. Visitors can stroll the scenic Cliff Walk, explore Bellevue Avenue’s historic estates, or spend afternoons browsing local shops and harborfront restaurants. Sailing excursions and sunset cruises offer a chance to experience the coastline from the water, while seafood spots, rooftop dining, and harbor views create an easy rhythm that encourages visitors to linger a little longer.

Perfect for those who enjoy a slower pace, this coastal escape still feels active and engaging. Between ocean breezes, historic landmarks, and classic seaside beauty, Newport delivers the kind of destination that feels effortlessly memorable.

In Lisbon, vintage trams wind through hillside streets lined with cafés, markets, and scenic overlooks. Evenings are often spent lingering over seafood, pastries, and live music drifting from tucked-away restaurants and courtyards. Along the coast oceanfront villages, dramatic cliffs, and golden beaches create an atmosphere that feels effortlessly restorative. Day trips to places like Sintra add another layer, with storybook palaces, lush gardens, and sweeping coastal views that feel worlds away from the city.

HOUSE& HOME

There's something special about a home that feels warm, welcoming, and well loved. In this special feature, Do South® connects you with trusted local professionals ready to help create a home you'll enjoy for years to come.

Q: How are homeowners using brick, tile, and stone in their spaces, and what should they know about upkeep?

A: Brick, tile, and stone add timeless character to both indoor and outdoor spaces. Tile isn't just for floors and showers—it's also being used creatively on countertops, porches, and fireplaces. Inside the home, full brick, thin brick, and stone veneer are popular for accent walls, archways, and fireplaces. As for maintenance, brick offers unmatched durability with virtually no upkeep. Most tile surfaces are also easy to maintain and clean using basic products available at retail stores, making these materials as practical as they are beautiful.

Q: What should homeowners know before choosing new flooring for their home?

A: Flooring impacts more than just appearance, it affects how a home functions every day. Before choosing a product, homeowners should think about their lifestyle, pets, children, moisture levels, and how much traffic the space receives. What works beautifully in one home may not be the best fit for another. Today, many homeowners are also looking for durable, low-maintenance options that still offer warmth and style. Working with an experienced flooring team can help narrow down the choices and ensure the final selection balances design, comfort, and long-term performance.

Whether new construction or remodeling, visit our showroom at Acme Brick Tile & Stone. We have a large selection of products to beautify your home and enhance its value!

Q: How can furniture and décor help a home feel more personal and inviting?

A: The most welcoming homes are the ones that reflect the people living in them. Furniture and décor help create warmth, personality, and comfort beyond just filling a space. Many homeowners today are blending textures, vintage finds, statement pieces, and meaningful accents to create rooms that feel collected rather than overly matched. It’s also important to choose pieces that fit the way a family actually lives, balancing style with comfort and function. Thoughtfully selected furniture, lighting, artwork, and accessories can completely change the atmosphere of a room and help transform a house into a space that truly feels like home.

Q: What features are home buyers paying the most attention to right now?

A: Today’s buyers are looking for homes that feel move-in ready and functional. Updated kitchens, neutral colors, good natural light, and usable outdoor spaces continue to stand out. Energy efficiency and smart storage are also becoming more important, especially for families balancing work, school, and busy schedules at home. But beyond upgrades, buyers are really paying attention to how a home feels the moment they walk in. Clean, well-maintained homes that photograph well and feel welcoming tend to generate the strongest interest and often sell faster in today’s market.

Q: How can homeowners extend the life of their flooring, and what mistakes should they avoid when cleaning?

A: Regular professional cleanings, every 6 to 12 months, are key to keeping carpets looking great and lasting longer. We also recommend applying a carpet protectant at each cleaning to help prevent stains and keep dirt from clinging to fibers. One common mistake is using spot cleaners with soaps, detergents, or brighteners. These can leave behind residue that attracts more dirt or even causes discoloration. We suggest using a safe, residue-free spot remover to treat stains without damaging your carpet or upholstery.

Q: What makes Alara at Chaffee Crossing such a great opportunity for homebuyers right now?

A: Alara at Chaffee Crossing offers the perfect combination of location, quality, and customization. Homebuyers can enjoy energy-efficient new construction in one of Fort Smith’s fastest-growing areas, just steps from trails, parks, and everything Chaffee Crossing has to offer. Buyers also have the opportunity to personalize floor plans, finishes, and colors to fit their lifestyle while working with a trusted local builder. Q: What is Smart Architectural Lighting, and does it have uses beyond the holiday season?

A: Smart Architectural Lighting is a low profile, permanent lighting system designed to highlight your home’s architecture with clean, warm white illumination every night. It blends into your roofline during the day and provides elegant, year round lighting after dark. And yes—it goes far beyond holiday use. With full color changing capability, you can celebrate any holiday, event, or game day with a tap in the app, while still enjoying a modern, architectural look the rest of the year.

Q: How often should a roof be inspected, and what should homeowners know about insurance coverage for replacements?

A: Aim to visually inspect your roof once a year— especially when cleaning gutters or hanging lights. Look for missing shingles, granule loss, lifted flashing, or rusted nails as signs of early damage. It’s also smart to schedule a professional inspection after major storms or high winds, even if damage is not immediately visible. Homeowners should understand that insurance coverage can vary based on the age and condition of the roof, as well as the type of policy they carry. Keeping records of inspections and maintenance can also help simplify the claims process if damage occurs.

Elite Roofing knows how important your home is to you. We take the time to make sure you get the best possible service for your roofing needs whether it is a new roof, or repairs and maintenance on your current roof. Call us today for a free, no-obligation inspection!

Q: What’s one of the biggest mistakes people make when starting the home buying process?

A: Many begin searching for homes before understanding their budget, financing options, or what monthly payment feels comfortable long term. Taking time to speak with a trusted lender early in the process can help buyers feel more confident, avoid surprises, and move quickly when the right home becomes available. Buyers should also think beyond the purchase price and consider insurance, taxes, maintenance, and future goals. A strong lending partner helps guide buyers through each step of the process, making homeownership feel less overwhelming and much more manageable from start to finish.

Q: What should homeowners know about fireplace safety, maintenance, and choosing the right unit?

A: One of the biggest risks we see is burning improper wood, which leads to creosote buildup—a major fire hazard. Always burn well-seasoned hardwoods, and follow NFPA Standard 211, which recommends having your chimney and fireplace inspected annually for deposits, clearances, and overall safety. When selecting a new fireplace, work with a certified professional. Specialty hearth retailers are trained to help you choose the right unit, ensure proper installation, and provide reliable service. It’s the best way to enjoy your fireplace with confidence and peace of mind.

Q: For decking, what materials and accessories are worth investing in for long-term use?

A: Composite decking is an excellent choice for outdoor materials due to its exceptional longevity and superior quality. It offers a durable and low-maintenance solution, making it ideal for various outdoor applications. To enhance both safety and aesthetics, complementing composite decking with metal handrails can provide a modern and robust design element, ensuring that your outdoor space is not only functional but also visually appealing.

Q: What are homeowners looking for most in modern fencing and outdoor design?

A: They want fencing that provides both function and style! Privacy and security are still important, but many people are also thinking about curb appeal and how their outdoor spaces feel overall. Modern fencing designs often focus on clean lines, durable materials, low maintenance, and customized layouts that complement the architecture of the home. A thoughtfully designed fence can help create a more polished, comfortable, and usable outdoor environment while also adding long-term value to the property.

Q: What are some of the most common homeowner’s insurance gaps people overlook?

A: Schedule a property insurance review with their agent to make sure their coverage still fits their home and lifestyle. Many people don’t fully understand percentage deductibles or how they impact out-ofpocket costs after a claim. Another common oversight is not having the right endorsements for valuable items that may have limited standard coverage. Jewelry, collectibles, electronics, and other costly belongings often need additional protection. Taking time to ask questions can help prevent unexpected surprises when you need coverage most.

Q: What should homeowners consider before installing a new fence?

A: Homeowners should consider more than just appearance. A fence is an investment in security, privacy, property value, and peace of mind. Choosing the right contractor matters just as much as choosing the right material. At The Fence Man, we help homeowners throughout the River Valley select the best fence for their needs, budget, and lifestyle. Our experienced team is committed to quality craftsmanship and dependable service. As a proud Best of River Valley 1st place winner, we’re honored to serve our community with fences built to protect what matters most. Call today for your FREE estimate.

Q: What’s the biggest mistake homeowners make when painting their home’s exterior?

A: Not adding Bug Juice, an insecticide additive, to their paint. Bug Juice is a contact insecticide, meaning it kills bugs when they land on or crawl across the treated surface. It doesn't repel bugs; it's an insecticide that kills a wide range of insects, including ants, spiders, cockroaches, and mosquitoes. It's commonly used in exterior walls, decks, kitchens, and pantries.

Q: What are some simple ways to refresh your home for the summer?

A: Refreshing your home for summer doesn’t have to mean starting from scratch. Right now, homeowners are loving watercolor artwork, decorative vases, and vintage-inspired décor that adds warmth and personality. Decorative pillows, framed art, tabletop accents, and cozy lighting are easy ways to bring fresh life into your home without a full redesign. Even a few carefully chosen pieces can make a space feel brighter, more inviting, and ready for the season.

Shop HOME! Stop by The Potting Shed for unique home décor and thoughtful gifts. Whether treating yourself or shopping for someone special, you’ll find timeless pieces to inspire and delight.

Q: Why are antiques and vintage pieces continuing to gain popularity in home design?

A: Antiques and vintage pieces bring character and personality into a home in a way newer items often cannot replicate. Many homeowners are moving away from spaces that feel overly matched or mass produced and instead want rooms that feel collected and meaningful over time. Antique furniture, artwork, and décor can add warmth, craftsmanship, and unique details that help a home feel inviting and lived in. Vintage pieces also blend beautifully with modern styles, creating spaces that feel layered and personal rather than overly formal. Often, it’s the unexpected statement piece or heirloom-style find that gives a room its most memorable character and charm.
