Student Spotlight: Martina’s Waves of Change
Meet Martina, a first-year student who’s already making an impact beyond the classroom. She founded Sisters of Stoke, a surf community that empowers women to challenge themselves, connect through cold-water swimming, and thrive in a male-dominated sport.

Inspired by her Exercise Psychology classes, Martina recently wrote about the mental health benefits of surfing—from stress relief to boosting confidence:

MUSCLE ACTIVITY AND PERFORMANCE
In their Biomechanics module with Dr. Chris Whittle, second-year Sport & Exercise Science students explored how fatigue influences muscle activation during performance.
They utilised surface EMG to assess muscle activity in gluteus maximus, hamstrings, and erector spinae during deadlifts, revealing a 15–20% drop in peak EMG amplitude post-fatigue.
“The data really brought the theory to life,” noted a student.
This lab enhanced their grasp of muscle function under fatigue and honed skills for careers in S&C, rehab
