BUSINESS PENTATHLON 2026

DayofGuide

Welcome to the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics

Welcome to the annual Business Pentathlon! We hope you have a great day of competition and learning! Today, our staff and current students will bring you through a series of events that will challenge you to make responsible business decisions, think creatively and learn more about what it would be like to be a business student at the LANG School.

RULES

All students will be participating in various business-related events throughout the day. As such, we want to ensure that the same rules that are present in the real business world are adhered to today. The following penalties will be enforced.

Late for an event (lose 3 points from event score)

Unauthorized use of cellphones during event (lose 5 points)

Harassment of any kind (disqualified from event)

Endangerment of volunteers and/or other students (disqualified from event)

EVENT OVERVIEW

Values and Valuations – Invites students to analyze investment opportunities. Each team will choose from five Guelph-inspired financial companies and strategically grow their portfolios.

Bad for Business – Teams are presented with a real-world failed business and are challenged to rebrand the product using core marketing principles. Teams will conclude with a two-minute pitch to judges

Gryphon's Den provides students with an issue that they must solve by creating a new product or service. Students will come to campus and pitch their product/service to the Gryphons!

Triple Bottom Line asks students to analyze a case related to a specific ethical dilemma, using a sustainability framework. Each team will then have the opportunity to present their findings to a panel of judges.

Profit vs. Reputation - Assuming various executive positions, teams will be tasked with navigating several ethical dilemmas that challenge the balance between profit and reputation. Teams will collaborate in this interactive decision-making simulation.

EMERGENCY CONTACTS

If for some reason you require emergency assistance, please dial

There are emergency phones located throughout campus. These phones are bright yellow, with a blue light on top. You can reach emergency services by dialing “2000” on these phones. Never leave your property unattended, even for a moment, in any university building. Laptops and phone are a popular target for thieves. Use the “buddy system”. Advise your teammates of where you are going and when you should be returning.
