Did the Earth move for you last month?

DID the earth move for you at around 3pm on February 8 in the Chard area? And no, we’re not trying to find out if you were up to anything that day. Instead, recent data shows that between 3.04pm and 3.05pm on that Sunday afternoon, the area saw two earthquakes. Yes, earthquakes. In Chard.

The British Geological Survey (BGS), the UK’s national quake monitoring agency, detected two tremors that afternoon in the Chard area – just east of Forton and right next to Chard Reservoir, to be precise.

The first, near the reservoir at 17 seconds past 3.04pm, measured 1.2 on the Richter local magnitude scale (ML), while the second came in at a whopping 2ML, both at a depth of around 8km below the earth’s surface.

According to the scale, those two quakes in Somerset would

be ‘scarcely felt’, with the BGS saying a rating of between one and two means “vibration is felt only by individual people at rest in houses, especially on upper floors of buildings”.

So you can ignore our rather dramatic image. Nothing like that is likely to happen (unless you think the potholes are getting really bad).

But, if the earth did move for

you that afternoon, for whatever reason, you might not have just been enjoying yourself – it may actually have shifted.

Earthquakes in the UK are more common than many of us think, with 14 being detected by the BGS in February alone, from Somerset to Cumbria, Lancashire to Anglesey.

The strongest quake this month was the 2ML event in

Chard, followed by a few measuring 1.4ML elsewhere, so nothing to worry about there, even if you felt anything.

Earthquakes occur when there is a sudden movement of rocks along a fault in the Earth, the BGS explained.

“As the rocks on either side of the fault move past each other, they send seismic waves through the Earth, radiating outwards like the ripples produced when a stone is dropped into a pond.”

So if you did feel something in Chard that day, it was an earthquake.

The last sizeable earthquake in Somerset came in December 2019, when a 3.5ML event struck an epicentre in Huntworth, near Bridgwater.

Tremors were felt from Yeovil to Burnham, with residents talking of a feeling “like if a lorry had passed at high speed”, and of milk bottles rattling on the worktop.

Plans for £15 million Octagon overhaul approved by council planners

A£15 MILLION plan to redevelop the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil has been approved.

Somerset Council’s planning committee has approved plans submitted by Yeovil Town Council and Somerset Council to revamp the venue.

The committee was told the scheme would secure the structural integrity of the 50-year-old building, as well as bringing major improvements to access both front-of-house and backstage.

Upgrades include improved accessibility and new technical equipment designed to support more ambitious productions, including enhanced systems for moving scenery and props.

The decision came after the submission, in October, of an outline business case to the Department of Media, Culture and Sport (DCMS), which is providing the bulk of the funding.

Now, with planning approval, the Octagon team can move ahead with the tender process to appoint a contractor, which will lead to a final business case (FBC) for submission.

Work on the project, if funding is finally apprvoed, would begin during the upcoming financial year, 2026/2027.

Lead member for communities, housing revenue account, culture and equalities, Councillor Federica SmithRoberts (Lib Dem, Taunton East), said: “Securing planning permission is a big step forward for this ambitious project.

“We now have the green light to move to the next stage in delivering a modern, accessible and vibrant theatre that will serve Somerset for generations.

“This project is a major public investment, and we remain committed to delivering it responsibly, on time and on budget.”

Cllr Andy Soughton, leader of Yeovil Town Council, went on: “The Octagon Theatre is central to the cultural life of Yeovil, and planning approval is

fantastic news for our community.

“For 50 years the theatre has been woven into the memories of local people, and this upgrade ensures it will continue to thrive for the next 50.

“The improved facilities will strengthen Yeovil’s offer, boost our local economy and provide an even better venue for audiences and the many talented groups who call The Octagon their home.”

Plans for the Yeovil Octagon Theatre refresh included:

• The replacement/renewal of the plant, machinery and physical infrastructure of the building – investment to meet current compliance requirements and provide resilience.

• Improving accessibility for all, including additional accessible toilets throughout the building for customers, a changing places facility and an accessible dressing room, also with accessible toilet and shower.

• Renewing and improving the auditorium and rehearsal space for a better audience experience and wider participation.

• Reorganisation and significant improvement of front of house facilities – significant benefits for audience experience, particularly for trading incomes

from food and drink.

• Backstage accessibility improvements to ensure comprehensive accessibility.

• Plans to improve the environmental impact of the venue – energy efficiency measures/sustainable practices.

• Increased revenue from front-of-house facilities.

• Improvements to the stage house and backstage area will significantly improve the technical aspects of our productions. Raising the roof will enable the team to fly cloths out and a backstage crossover will support the ambitions of the theatre programme and talented local community groups.

Funding for the project has been controversial, being made up from £10m from the DCMS, £3.75m from Yeovil Town Council, which is made up from a loan and reserves, plus just over £1.25 million made up of ticket levy income, fundraising and 106 contributions via Somerset Council, believed to total around £265,000.

Meanwhile, Yeovil town residents have been asked to contribute to the funding through a 3.3% levy on their council tax to counter the borrowing costs for the town council, which has proved controversial with some.

Lower speed limit and road changes plan to improve safety at accident blackspot

ALOWER speed limit is being proposed for an accident blackspot near Frome which has claimed the lives of five people in the last five years.

Somerset Council has unveiled plans to lower the speed limit from 60mph to 50mph, alongside engineering works, to improve safety on the A361 Frome bypass.

It comes after AI cameras were installed on the stretch last year to monitor speed, seatbelt wearing and mobile phone use.

A public consultation over the proposals is set to be launched this week over changes to the bypass, which is used by around 15,000 motorists a day.

The council said if approved, the scheme would be implemented at the same time as resurfacing work is carried out at the junction, currently planned from May 7 to 20, with an evening road closure in place.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council lead member for transport and waste, said: “We are developing further plans for making this road safer with an improved road surface, and measures to reduce traffic speeds through the proposed speed limit and introduction of central hatching to reduce the road width, where feasible.

“We are also looking at carrying out a significant vegetation cutback to help further improve the visibility at the junction.

“The road markings will be

more visible and make a slight noise warning when driven over.

“We share the concerns of the community about the number of incidents on this stretch of road.

“Driver behaviour contributes to around 90 per cent of serious road collisions we would urge all drivers – if you are getting behind the wheel of a car please act responsibly.”

MP Anna Sabine (Lib Dem, Frome & East Somerset) has been campaigning on improving safety on the route since being elected "because so many local people told me how worried they were about this stretch of road".

"Too many families have experienced accidents or near

misses here, and action has been needed for a long time," she added.

"Reducing the speed limit to

50mph near the junction is a sensible move that will help make this road safer. Alongside improved visibility and resurfacing works, this represents a great start in addressing the risks that drivers have faced for years."

She said she would now monitor the changes and call for any further improvements if needed.

"Road safety remains one of the biggest issues raised with me by residents," the MP added.

"While this announcement is very welcome, I will continue working with the council to monitor the impact of these changes and ensure that safety remains the top priority."

Relief as Yeovil awarded helicopter contract

MORE jobs could be created at Leonardo in Yeovil after the firm was awarded a £1 billion contract to build new helicopters for the UK military.

Months of delays over the award of the contract had prompted fears over the future of the Somerset site, but the MoD has confirmed the Italian-based company will build 23 new medium helicopters (NMH).

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the agreement could bring an increase in orders for the AW149 - built in Yeovilleading to a jobs boost, while Defence Secretary John Healey said the contract would make Yeovil "the proud home of Leonardo's global military helicopter production, building world-class helicopters for our forces and allies around the world for many years to come".

The announcement came after months of delays over the announcement, with fears over more than 3,000 workers at Yeovil.

The MoD said: "There are around 20 countries with requirements for new mediumlift helicopters. Together with Leonardo’s other helicopters, international orders for NMH could generate over £15 billion in exports over the next 10 years.

"The agreement secures the future of the UK’s sovereign helicopter production and Leonardo’s facility in Yeovil, Somerset, sustaining 3,300 jobs.

"This includes 650 people working directly on NMH and more involved with autonomous systems and providing ongoing support and manufacture of the Merlin and Wildcat helicopter fleets.

"With a UK supply chain of nearly 70 companies, the programme also secures sovereign defence skills and expertise for decades to come.

"The deal represents a major investment into the UK’s industrial base - a key pillar of delivery for the Defence Industrial Strategy and other growth-driving sectors like advanced manufacturing and digital and technology."

MP Adam Dance (Lib Dem, Yeovil) said: "It is a strong vote of confidence in our workforce and in Yeovil’s future. Today is a very good day for our town."

Responding to the news, Unite union general secretary, Sharon Graham, said: "We are pleased that the Rachel Reeves has now listened to Unite on this issue. However, it took way too long to get this done, and we still have to question why workers were left in the dark until the 11th hour."

Carnival club fundraiser after shed destroyed by flood

APOPULAR Somerset

carnival club is facing one of its "toughest challenges" after their base was flooded.

Storm Chandra and relentless rainfall brought widespread flooding to Somerset, with dozens of properties hit by rising water levels for weeks.

Among the victims was shed of Pentathlon Carnival Club, based in Moorland, which saw its base under more than three-feet of floodwater at the height of the devastation, which prompted a major incident declaration across the county.

"The water has remained standing inside the shed for the past three weeks," a spokesperson said.

"Although we managed to remove our carnival cart before the floodwater entered the building, it has now been left exposed to relentless rain and wind for the same three-week period.

"What we saved from floodwater has since suffered from the winter weather and the timber and wiring is no longer salvageable.

"Inside the shed, the damage is heartbreaking. Years of hard

work, materials, tools, wood, wiring, and essential equipment have been soaked and contaminated. Much of it will need to be replaced entirely.

flood-hit shed.

"For a small village club like ours, this is a huge setback."

They said Pentathlon "isn’t just about building a cart" and said the losses would damage the community itself.

"We are part of Moorland’s identity. We bring people together across generations, families, friends, neighbours, all working side by side to create something special for carnival season," the spokesperson went on.

"Carnival means community. It means pride. It means keeping local traditions alive.

"But right now, we need help to make sure we can build our 2026 entry and keep that tradition going."

Now, the group is fundraising to replacing everything from damaged wood and structural materials, to electrical components and clearing up the

"Every donation, no matter how small, will go directly towards rebuilding and helping us get back on our feet," the spokesperson added.

"If you are able to donate, we would be incredibly grateful. If you can’t donate, sharing this page would mean just as much. The more people who hear our story, the better chance we have of rebuilding stronger than ever.

"Moorland has always been a community that pulls together in tough times. With your support, we can restore our shed, rebuild our cart, and proudly return to carnival in 2026.

"Thank you for standing with Pentathlon Carnival Club."

Tributes to man, 49, who died after being rescued from the River Tone in Taunton

TRIBUTES have been paid to Kevin Thorne, who died after being pulled from the River Tone in Taunton.

Mr Thorne, 49, passed away on December 22 last year, almost two weeks after he was rescued from the water in Bridge Street at around 6.40pm on December 9.

An Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said officers were on the scene within five minutes of reports a person was in the river, when they found a member of the public had pulled Kevin, believed to be from Wellington, out of the water.

“First aid was administered and he was taken to hospital, where he sadly later died in the late hours of Monday, December 22,” they said.

Now, his family has paid tribute to a “kind and caring”

man who was taken "tragically too soon".

“Kevin was a son, father, brother, uncle, cousin and a friend to many. He was kind and

caring and he would help anyone if he could,” they said.

“Kevin was a loved man, not just by his family, but by everyone who knew him.

“Losing Kev has been a massive shock to his family and friends and is going to be sadly missed by all.

“His family is devasted losing Kev at such a young age of just 49, he was taken tragically too soon.”

The family requested privacy during this time and police said they are being offered support by a specially-trained family liaison officer.

A 30-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the incident and has since been released on police bail.

“It is believed that the victim and the suspect are known to each other and there is no wider risk to the public,” the police spokesperson added.

“The investigation is ongoing and we urge people not to speculate.”

New permanent pumps plan for Levels

THE installation of permanent pumps on the Somerset Levels to tackle flooding as it happens is to be considered by the government.

Following a visit to the county, Minister for Water and Flooding, Emma Hardy (Lab, Kingston upon Hull West and Haltemprice), has said the flood response in the county would be reviewed – with permanent pumps considered for high-risk areas.

MP Sarah Dyke (Lib Dem, Glastonbury & Somerton) secured a visit from the minister earlier this month, to witness the “devastation” following Storm Chandra.

And she welcomed the commitment to look at how the Environment Agency responds to flooding in the county.

“The minister had originally committed to visiting in spring, but after my repeated calls the visit was brought forward so she

could observe the impact of floodwater before it had the chance to recede,” Ms Dye said.

“In order to fully recognise the scope of this crisis, the minister needed to see the reality of what my constituents are reckoning with currently: properties flooded, farmland underwater, and livelihoods upturned.

“The Government’s

assumptions that our flood defences can run on a shoestring budget are incorrect, but this visit was a step in the right direction.

“I had constructive conversations with the minister about collaboration between agencies and investment in cost-effective flood preparedness, including prevention and nature-based solutions.

“I am pleased that she has committed to a review of water level management in Somerset, and I will keep pushing to ensure these commitments

translate into action.”

Meanwhile, calls from the Somerset MP to reconsider the withdrawal of funding for main river maintenance in the county, the minister also acknowledged riparian landowners were not fully consulted before the decision was made, and has reopened a public consultation to allow them to share their views.

“This is good news for riparian owners across Somerset, who don’t have the time, equipment, or funding to manage our rivers properly, and were not given the opportunity to express their concerns to the Environment Agency prior to the withdrawal of funding," Ms Dyke went on.

“The Government should have learned the lessons from the devastating floods of 2013/2014 and recognise that their decision to slash main river maintenance funding will cause a dangerous and unnecessary increase in flood risk at a time where Somerset is seeing extreme weather events becoming more frequent and severe."

Cyclists wanted for charity trek across the

Quantocks

INTREPID cyclists are being encouraged to put the peddle to the metal in Somerset for a good cause.

May 9 will see the cycling community come together for the Somerset Cycle, in aid of the Youth Adventure Trust (YAT) charity.

Starting from Bridgwater College, riders will take on either a 43km, 64km or 110km route through Somerset’s winding trails on the Quantock Hills in aid of the YAT, which provides life-changing outdoor adventures for vulnerable 11–16-year-olds.

Louise Balaam, director of fundraising at the YAT, said: “The Somerset Cycle was a triumph last year and that was entirely down to the incredible people on the bikes.

“It’s inspiring to see riders push their physical limits on stunning routes through the Quantocks to help local young people face their own uphill battles.”

Village paddock could see 32 new homes

PLANS for 32 homes on a Somerset village paddock have been submitteddespite previous attempts to develop the land being refused.

Ken Parke Planning Consultants, on behalf of Bracken Developments Ltd, has applied to Somerset Council for outline permission to develop land south of Court Lane, Milborne Port.

The site, consisting of an open paddock measuring just over three acres, is "considered to be outside of a defined settlement boundary" and in "open countryside for planning purposes", the plans said.

And previous plans for residential development, including one application for 22 homes, were refused for the site, with reasons including adverse effects on the Somerset Levels and Moors Ramsar Site and the work resulting in 'less than substantial harm' to nearby

heritage assets and conservation area, as well as concerns over drainage proposals.

However, the new application said the objections were "fully capable of being overcome" through "robust technical reports and assessments" and wants permission to develop a scheme made up of 21 three-bedroom and 11 two-bedroom properties.

"The mix, type and size of housing is considered to be appropriate to the housing needs of the village and to add variety

to the site," it said.

"Each unit is proposed to be two-storeys, reflective of the surrounding dwelling heights and will utilise traditional stylings, materials, colours and textures."

A "central public space" would be created, including a play area, the application said, with housing made up of semi-detached and short runs of terraced properties.

A hedgerow along the northern boundary would be retained, the plans said, with

access coming from the current gated entrance off Court Lane. A secondary access, for pedestrians and cyclists, would be created in the north-west corner.

Each property would also benefit from an EV charger, the application added, as well as "generous outdoor garden spaces" and went on: "The site represents a suitable and sustainable location for a high-quality form of residential development, in that it is well located, and development would help support the vitality and viability of the village and its function as a rural centre."

And it added: "Milborne Port is more than capable of accommodating additional housing growth."

New facilities to open - and more planned - at Somerset resort

HOLIDAYMAKERS and locals will soon be able to enjoy a new outdoor lido at a Somerset resort – with a trampoline park, landscaped gardens and a dog agility park set to follow as part of a £10 million package of improvements.

Unity Beach Holiday Park, in Brean, is set to open refurbished indoor pool facilities soon, including an updated soft play area, changing rooms, the Wave Café and gym, as well as a new-look reception area with dedicated buggy park.

And the company has also secured planning permission for

the next stage of the ambitious improvements project, with work set to begin in the coming weeks.

At the pool, the updated unisex changing rooms include larger family cubicles - with space for up to four - alongside new vanity units with free hairdryers, baby changing stations and 240 new poolside lockers.

A newly-installed lift and pool hoist, as well as a refreshed accessible changing area, will make the facilities more welcoming for all, the company said. Also inside, the 25-metre pool hall has been fully

refurbished, including the addition of poolside showers, with a new indoor Splash Pad soon to replace the baby pool.

Meanwhile, the next phase of development will see the creation of a new lido area with an outdoor pool, alongside private cabanas and an outdoor dining experience, Unity said, with the facility set to open in July – just in time for the school holidays.

Further plans include a new trampoline park, bandstand, boardwalk, landscaped gardens and a dog agility area as well as an outdoor activity centre where visitors can take part in archery,

axe throwing and rifle shooting.

“These are exciting times for our owners, our holidaymakers and the local community,” said Unity Beach Resort director, Jonny Green.

“Our improved pool facilities will help us sustain and grow participation in swimming lessons and recreational activity - not only for guests staying on the park, but also for the wider community across Somerset.

“Investing in facilities like these also supports local jobs and training, while helping to attract more visitors to the Somerset coast - benefiting the wider local economy.”

Drainage works planned on route through Pilton

“VITAL” drainage works will be taking place next month – closing a main road through a Somerset village.

From March 9 to 13, Somerset Council road contractors Kier will be carrying out work on the A361 at Pilton.

The road will be closed on weekdays from 9.30am to 3.30pm, with manually-

controlled traffic lights in place outside those hours.

Extra signs at either end of the A361 will be put in place to advise of the closure times and location.

The council’s lead member for transport and waste services, Councillor Richard Wilkins (Lib Dem, Curry Rivel &

Langport), said: “The team will do their best to get the work completed as quickly and efficiently as possible. Drainage work is essential to make sure that surface water can drain away.

“We are extremely grateful to residents and motorists for their support and understanding while this work is done.”

Former town mayor passes away, aged 85

FRANK Foster – a former mayor of Wincanton –has passed away at the age of 85.

Mr Foster became a well-known member of the Wincanton community after moving to the town in 1994 from Essex, where he had a successful career with the Ford motor company.

In 1996, he was co-opted to the town council, becoming vice chair and in 2000, mayor, a role he filled with pride until 2003.

During his time, Mr Foster oversaw the twinning of Wincanton with the fictional city of Ankh-Morpork, from the Discworld novels by fantasy author, Terry Pratchett, who he stood alongside at the official unveiling of the move in December 2002.

He was also part of creating Wincanton’s Town Plan, and in 2001 joined football legend

Trevor Brooking at the opening of the new sports centre at King Arthur’s Community School.

Mr Foster was also mayor during the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002, and organised the Jubilee Ball, where a car was among prizes given away in a raffle raising money for the mayor’s charity, Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance.

When he stepped down as mayor in 2003, Mr Foster was honoured with the title of Governor General of AnkhMorpork, but remained a popular member of the community, running a picture framing business from a small premises in the town.

In 2015, he and wife Hendrika moved to Winchester in order to be closer to their daughter, and passed away peacefully on February 11, 2026, after a long illness.

Eagles of Death Metal are swooping in

ICONIC US rockers Eagles of Death Metal are heading to the sunny climes of Somerset.

The band, famed for seminal albums including Death By Sexy and Peace Love Death Metal, have announced a show at the Cheese and Grain, in Frome, on November 23.

Hailing from Palm Desert, California, EODM was founded in 1998 by Jesse Hughes and Joshua Homme and has undergone a raft of line-up iterations over the years, with Hughes as the mainstay afront the band, with Homme going on to global stardom with Queens of the Stone Age.

EODM’s current touring lineup includes Leah Bluestein on drums, Scott Shiflett on guitar and Dustin Douglas on bass. The band also hit the headlines in 2015 when, while on stage at the Bataclan in Paris, terrorists stormed the venue and attacked the audience.

Just three weeks later, the band returned to the stage with U2 in Paris in their first concert appearance since the attack, and later returned to the Bataclan to finish the show.

A documentary directed by Colin Hanks about the band and the aftermath of the Bataclan attack, titled Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis (Our Friends), premiered on HBO in early 2017.

A brand-new studio album is in the works, and the band have been continuing to tour worldwide, and are set to take to the stage in Somerset as part of that run, marking 20 years since the release of Death By Sexy.

Government agrees £30m of 'exceptional' support for Somerset as council tax rises

THE Government has agreed ‘in principle’ to £30 million of Exceptional Financial Support (EFS) for Somerset as the county struggles to balance the books.

Somerset Council – which was refused permission to increase council tax by more than 4.99% earlier this month – has been handed the funding in a bid for 2026/27 to help “enable them to set balanced budgets”.

In a letter confirming the decision, Local Government Minister Alison McGovern, pictured inset, said she had “significant concerns” over the council’s financial position.

She said: “While the government is minded to provide the requested support for Somerset Council in your constituency, having considered their request and the circumstances of the request, I have significant concerns over aspects of the council’s wider position.”

She said she had noted concerns over “the pace and delivery of the council’s transformation plans and repeated requests to reprofile previously agreed support into future years”, and “significant concerns raised by your external auditors”.

“It is my clear expectation that this council takes robust action to address these specific risks and issues, as part of their

wider plans for financial recovery,” she added.

The government would be applying “close scrutiny” to the council’s moves to address the financial issues, including “consideration of if any further support or action is needed to ensure these issues are being properly addressed at local level”.

Ms McGovern added: “This government has been clear that, while we will continue to support councils and recognise that improvements will take time, we will also expect council to make sure they are doing all they can locally to deliver for residents and reach a sustainable position across the settlement period.”

The £30m approved in principle will be added to around £15m allocated in 2025/26, taking the total extra support for the coming financial year to £45.118m.

Previously, the Lib Dem administration at Somerset Council has branded the funding model for local authorities “unfit for purpose” as it has struggled to balance the books.

Cllr Bill Revans, leader of Somerset Council, said: “This confirmation is welcome but it’s important to note that EFS is not a bailout or extra funding.

“In fact, as we’ve previously highlighted, Somerset recently lost around £21m each year as a result of the recent so-called fair funding review which removed

support for councils delivering services in rural areas, even though these usually cost substantially more to deliver.

“We continue to receive less income from Government due to the way grants are calculated based on the average council tax bill – and we will receive nothing from the Government’s £1bn recovery grant.

“We have taken a number of decisive actions ourselves to protect frontline services while also avoiding the threat of a s114 notice. However, it is clear the funding system for local councils is broken and we urgently need a better way to pay for demand-led services like social care.

“We welcome further scrutiny of our finances, and I would recommend anyone seeking to understand the historic causes of our financial situation to read the CIPFA report that is very clear on the cause of the financial issues Somerset Council faces being

the reckless freezing of council tax for six years by Somerset County Council.”

Leader of the Conservatives on Somerset Council, Councillor Diogo Rodrigues, said it was time for the Lib Dem leaders to “stop the spin”.

“This is a damning assessment,” he said. “The Liberal Democrats have tried to blame everyone else for Somerset’s problems, the previous administration, national funding formulas, inflation, anyone but themselves. Yet they have now been in charge for years. The responsibility sits squarely with them.

“It is no surprise that the Government turned down Somerset’s attempt to impose an 11% council tax rise. When Ministers are highlighting serious concerns about transformation delays and financial control, why would they hand over permission for an above inflation tax hike?

“Hard-working taxpayers across Somerset are tightening their belts. They expect their council to show the same discipline and competence with public money, not splash £20 million on consultants to tell them how to save money for example. The Liberal Democrat administration must stop the spin, stop blaming others, start taking responsibility and, at a bare minimum, get the basics right.”

Arrest after religious venue was targeted by vandals

A MAN in his 50s has been arrested in connection with a suspected hate crime at a place of worship in Minehead –including dog faeces being dropped through the letterbox.

Avon & Somerset Police said a man was arrested on suspicion of a religiouslymotivated public order offence and criminal damage after the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, pictured, had

faeces posted, while a vehicle was targeted with “symbols associated with the far right, that leads us to consider there was a hateful intent”.

The incidents occurred between Sunday, February 15, and Wednesday, February 18.

After an appeal for information from officers, police said “other incidents of offensive graffiti in the town” were reported.

A police spokesperson said a man was arrested on Tuesday (February 23) and has been released on bail with conditions, including a ban on visiting certain areas of Minehead.

“Extra reassurance patrols by officers have been carried out since this incident,” they added.

Anyone with information should call 101, reference number 5226045306.

Big Country founder Bruce set for intimate Bridgwater show

Chippy handed prestigious accolade

ASOMERSET fish and chip shop was crowned a quality accreditation champion at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Knight’s Fish Restaurant, in Glastonbury, was presented with the accolade at the National Fish & Chip Awards 2026, sponsored by Seafood from Norway.

The 38th grand gala ceremony was hosted by TV presenter and actor, Stephen Mangan, and organised by fish and chip industry association, the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF).

Other notable winners included the Scrap Box, in York, which was named takeaway of the year, while Trenchers of Whitby, in Yorkshire, was named restaurant of the year.

After their win, the Glastonbury chip shop, which was founded in 1909, said: “Winning the NFFF Quality

Accreditation Champion award is an incredibly proud moment for everyone at Knights. This recognition reflects our longstanding commitment to continually bettering ourselves and raising standards.

“We have been part of formal quality assessment schemes for decades – from the early Seafish programme through to being involved from the very

beginning of the NFFF Quality Accreditation scheme – and that consistent engagement has helped shape the way we operate today. The honest, expert feedback – whether identifying refinements or highlighting oversights in today’s fast-moving legislative world – enables us to strengthen, adapt and futureproof our business. Learn,

improvise, adapt and overcome.

“The NFFF has long been a cornerstone of our business, and this win cements that relationship. But we are not finished – not even close.

“Longevity comes from humility, from listening, and from a relentless commitment to improve. We are proud and thankful today, but tomorrow we keep learning.”

Property

AN ‘AMBITIOUS’

Somerset town has come out on top in a new list of seven ‘best kept secrets’ in the UK property market.

Langport has been named the number one in a list compiled by property agent Strutt & Parker and published by Country Life magazine.

The recommendations identified the ‘best places near the best places’ for property buyers – and Langport, on the banks of the Parrett, was highlighted for its period properties and ‘creative streak’.

And Sarah Brown, director of Strutt & Parker’s National

Country House Department, said it boasted a range of attractive qualities.

“White Chapel is a former chapel that’s been converted by a family into an impressive exhibition space, hosting regular shows and events that feel more ambitious than you might expect for a town of this size,” she said.

“There’s a whole host of independents here, including The Bridge Bakery – a destination in its own right –and Kitchen at the Wharf.”

Langport offers a moreaffordable alternative to the likes of trendy Bruton, with easy access to attractions

including The Newt and art gallery, Hauser & Wirth.

The emergence of towns like Langport was a sign of the changing property market, according to Guy Robinson, head of residential at Strutt & Parker.

“It’s no secret that the last few years have presented affordability challenges for country buyers, with high interest rates, higher loan to value mortgages, and an increased cost of living encouraging buyers to look beyond the well-known names in search of better value,” he said.

“There are hidden gems to be

found by buyers brave enough to extend their search by expanding their radius that few miles extra to see what else is on offer without feeling they’ve compromised on the dream location.”

The seven locations recommended by Strutt & Parker and published in Country Life were:

1. Langport, Somerset

2. Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire

3. Romsey, Hampshire

4. Redbourn, Hertfordshire

5. Framlingham, Suffolk

6. Nantwich, Cheshire

7. St Boswells, Scottish Borders

Site up for sale near Taunton "could be suitable for development"

LAND on the edge of Taunton –which is up for sale – “could be suitable for development”, according to the firm marketing the site.

The 2.2-acre plot, south east Killams Avenue, is on the market with planning experts Greenslade Taylor Hunt (GTH), with a guide price of around £75,000.

It is bounded by housing, the M5 and agricultural land, GTH said, with experts saying it could be suitable for a mix of uses, subject to planning consent, although it falls outside the boundary of Taunton.

GTH said Somerset Council, formed in 2023 as a result of a

merger of the district councils, is currentlyrelying on its predecessor’s Local Plan while it formulates a new countywide version.

“This presents an opportunity to promote the land through the emerging Somerset Local Plan, which once adopted, will set the planning policy across the unitary authority area,” a GTH spokesperson said.

For more information and to arrange a viewing of the site, contact Graham Ford or George Bennett on 01823 334466, or email graham. ford@gth.net or george.bennett@gth. net.

Iconic Aston back on display in Somerset after painstaking restoration

AN ICONIC Aston

Martin is back up and running – and on display – thanks to hundreds of hours’ work by Somerset car experts.

Expert restoration by Haynes Heritage Engineering has brought a 1961 DB4, owned by Haynes Motor Museum, back to running condition.

It is now on public display at the museum, near Sparkford.

For more than two decades, the DB4 was a static exhibit, but it has now been carefully restored to full running condition by Haynes Heritage Engineering, the specialist classic car workshop at the Somerset museum.

Originally purchased at auction and donated to the museum by John Haynes OBE and his wife Annette, the DB4 is said to embody a remarkable chapter in British automotive history.

“Widely regarded as one of Aston Martin’s most desirable models, the DB4 combined Italian-influenced Superleggera design, a powerful straight-six engine, and effortless highspeed touring ability, establishing the blueprint for generations of Aston Martin Grand Tourers,” a museum spokesperson said.

“Prior to being acquired by John Haynes, the DB4 was written off in its first year of use and later involved in a number of smaller incidents, meaning it required significant structural repairs.

“These included the careful reconstruction of the front section and the correction of historic repair work, with every step prioritising the car’s originality and historical integrity.”

Now, the car has been returned to its original Dubonnet Red paintwork, the exact shade it would have left the Aston Martin factory in 1961.

The project has involved more than 200 hours of hand

metalwork, around 300 hours in the Paintshop, a full engine rebuild, and the reinstallation of the original Fawn leather interior to bring the car back to its original best.

“Restoring this DB4 has been an incredible opportunity to showcase the craftsmanship of our team,” said Nick LockeyMay, workshop manager at Haynes Heritage Engineering.

“Visitors to Haynes Motor Museum can now admire the

DB4 both for its beauty and for the expert work that brought it back to life.”

Haynes Heritage Engineering is based in a public-facing workshop in the museum grounds, taking on private projects and the ongoing care of the venue’s collection.

Any profits generated from workshop projects - including private work - are reinvested into the Haynes Motor Museum charity.

Based in Taunton operating throughout Somerset and surrounding counties

all that winter wet, the ground is, it is hoped, moist through to the lower levels – in just the right state to lift and divide the garden’s ornamental grasses. Dividing named grasses is a job best left until the spring. And after all that winter wet, the clumps are looking bedraggled and windswept. So, for named grasses that can’t be propagated by seed, lift the individual clumps and knock all the spare soil off the root-ball. Using a sharp pair of secateurs, trim the old, brown stems, the spent flower stalks and any brown leaves and discard them onto the compost heap. Then divide each clump into as many parts as you need, making sure each top has roots attached.

Prepare the area where the new young plants are to go with

plenty of garden compost and sharp grit to enhance the drainage, and make a hole a bit larger than the size of the potential root-ball. Fill each with a division and back-fill the hole with more grit and garden compost. Firm the soil around the new plant as little as possible and water it all in. Label it and if you dislike ‘tombstones’ in the garden, push the label right into the soil so just the tip is showing. This method is suitable for named grasses from tall, elegant Miscanthus sinensis, through Hakonechloa macra Aureola with its golden variegation, to tufts of blue Festuca Miscanthus is a ‘statement’ grass that rarely seeds at all; the Hakonechloa is related to bamboo but does not ‘run’ or self-seed; and the little Festuca is intolerant of wet winters.
