Schoolboy Tom makes his screen debut in BBC drama

ASOMERSET schoolboy

is set to star in a major new BBC drama.

Wellington School pupil Tom Page-Turner features in the upcoming BBC adaptation of Lord of the Flies, which will be available on iPlayer from February 8, with the first episode on BBC One at 9pm that day.

Year 10 student Tom was first spotted more than two years ago, the school said, as part of a nationwide search for talent by casting agent Nina Gold.

"As part of that journey, casting agents visited Wellington School and auditioned 23 of our students, with three later invited to Nina Gold’s London studio," a Wellington School spokesperson went on.

"At the time this felt like an extraordinary achievement in itself."

However, this week, Wellington School's director of drama, Claire Davies, and choreographer Dean Brammall were alongside Tom at the

premiere of the first episode of Lord of the Flies, which was shown at the British Film Institute.

Following the preview there was a Q&A with writer Jack Thorne, director Marc Munden and executive producer Joel

Wilson, who praised Tom for his skill.

Mrs Davies added: "We are so immensely proud of Tom and everything that he has achieved. We can't wait to watch the whole series and share the joy of seeing one of our very own students star in such a huge BBC drama."

Tom plays Bill in the adaptation, the latest of William Golding's novel, which has become a staple of the curriculum over the last 70 years.

Jacquie retires from West Somerset Railway role after 10 years

WEST Somerset Railway (WSR) general manager Jacquie Green has retired from the role after more than a decade.

Jacquie is well known to travellers and volunteers alike through her work on the heritage railway line, with a West Somerset Rwailway Association (WSRA) spokesperson saying they would "be sorry to learn of the news", which they said was due to ill health.

WSRA chair, Edward Martin, said:

"Jacquie took up the general manager job in the wake of a period of turbulence for the association, steadied the ship and made sure members' interests and needs were maintained and met.

"From that essential foundation the association was able to maintain its support for the West Somerset Railway through the Covid era and in other recent periods of need."

"We will miss the continuity of

information and advice that Jacquie provided in what is a volunteer-led organisation," he added.

"Following on from her time as head of catering for the West Somerset Railway, she has made a significant contribution to the history of the line between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead.

"We wish her well for the future and offer many thanks for her time and work with us."

Bridgwater sex offender gets three years

REGISTERED

Bridgwater sex offender

Rhys Jones has been jailed for three years.

The 27-year-old was sentenced on Friday, January 16, at Taunton Crown Court, for serious online childsafeguarding offences and breaches of an order imposed after he committed 13 offences.

Jones pleaded guilty to six counts of breaching the requirements of the Sex Offenders Register (SOR) by failing to notify police of new accounts, usernames, or email addresses on Snapchat, TikTok and Gmail.

He also breached the conditions of his Sexual Harm Prevention Order three times (SHPO) by using file sharing website Dropbox and installing Snapchat on mobile phones, as well as admitting making four indecent images of children.

Alongside an immediate custodial term, he has been handed a restraining order to not contact his victim, a girl under 16 who he contacted for sexual gratification, which is in place

until 2036. The SHPO is now in place indefinitely.

Jones’ latest offending came to light when officers made an unannounced visit to an address he was staying at to check he was complying with the conditions of the SOR and SHPO on November 7 last year, which were imposed in August 2025 by Taunton Magistrates’ Court.

He was then arrested following mobile phone analysis where the offending was discovered.

Detective Chief Inspector Katherine Paul said: “Without the positive joint working of the newly-formed Offender Manager Investigation Team, the digital team and CID, we would not have been able to achieve this sentence.

“This case shows the devastating impact online predators can have on vulnerable individuals. The victim showed exceptional bravery throughout this investigation, and this sentence reflects the seriousness of these offences. Our priority will

always be the safety of children and young people, both online and offline.

“We want to reassure victims that they will be listened to, believed, and supported. Reporting abuse is incredibly difficult, but nobody must face it alone. If you are worried about your safety, or the safety of a child, please reach out. We have dedicated teams who will act swiftly to protect you, and we were supported in this case by the South West Regional

Organised Crime Unit.”

Police are urging victims of online abuse, exploitation, or threatening behaviour to seek help immediately.

Sponsorship coincides with club's winning run

A NEW sponsor proved lucky for Burnham rugby players in their top-of-the-table clash against Clevedon.

Burnham-on-Sea Rugby Club claimed a 28-7 win over their Somerset rivals – the first game where they had sported training tops sponsored by resort firm, Unity Holidays.

The match was Burnham’s ninth consecutive win, and they sit top of the league with a one-point lead.

In poor conditions, Burnham’s Jamie Whitehouse was man of the match kicking 13 points, while tries came from skipper Ryan Beard, Jude Donnelly and Ethan James.

with the club.

It came after Unity Holidays recently announced a two-year sponsorship deal

The family-run holiday company has three parks across the UK, and their Unity Beach resort in Brean is just a few miles from the rugby club’s BASC ground, in Stoddens Road.

Unity Holidays is now on show at the ground as well on all team kit, including two senior teams, a colts team and a thriving junior and minis section.

Jonny Green, resort director at Unity Beach, said: “Burnham-on-Sea Rugby Club sits at the heart of the local community, bringing together players, families and supporters of all ages.

“The resort has a long-standing relationship with the club, with many of our own team members, past and present, playing for them or volunteering there.

“We’re thrilled to be backing the club’s ambitions on and off the field.”

Disabled man's shock at council tax bill

TAUNTON man Andy Mitchell is heading to the High Court after he went from paying no council tax - to a bill for 90% of the charge.

Mr Mitchell, who suffers from multiple physical and mental health conditions, was previously given a 100% council tax discount as part of Somerset Council's reduction scheme.

However, having been transferred to Universal Credit, the council now assess him differently - and ordered him to pay more than £1,100 for 2026/27.

Now, he has been granted permission by the High Court to pursue a judicial review of the changes, deciding the grounds of his challenge were "arguable".

Somerset Council said it was planning to overhaul the reduction scheme for 2027/28, but would contest the judicial review, while urging people to explore other assistance available.

Represented by law firm Leigh Day, Mr Mitchell claims the scheme unlawfully penalises disabled people and others with additional needs based on the kind of benefits they receive.

He relies on means-tested benefits which he is entitled to in recognition of his disability - but now that he is receiving Universal Credit, the assessment changes, and his reduction changed to just 10%, cutting his bill by around £2 per week.

"When I was moved from Employment and Support Allowance onto Universal Credit, I was told my income would be protected and that I would not be worse off," he said.

"So when I received a large council tax bill from Somerset Council it was a shock. I thought it must be a mistake as nothing about my health or circumstances had changed."

Mr Mitchell's claim argues the change stems from

discriminatory structural flaws in the design of the council’s scheme, rather than anything specific to his circumstances.

While 'legacy' benefits - like those he was previously receiving - are disregarded when calculating council tax reductions under Somerset’s scheme, all Universal Credit income, except the housing element, are taken into account.

It means other elements of Universal Credit, including the disability element, are treated as income and Mr Mitchell no longer qualifies to have his council tax bills reduceddespite no changes in the reasons behind his benefit payments.

Earlier this month (January 9), the High Court granted permission for his judicial review to proceed on all grounds, including arguments that the scheme is discriminatory, in breach of the Public Sector Equality Duty, and irrational.

The case will now proceed to a full hearing in the High Court, where the lawfulness of Somerset Council’s scheme will be considered.

"It cannot be right that the DWP reassures claimants that their income is protected when they migrate to Universal Credit, when they must have known that council tax bills might substantially increase and therefore significantly reduce income available to meet essential needs," Mr Mitchell went on.

"This situation has caused me real anxiety and distress and I feel misled. I have since learnt there are a lot of other people in Somerset and across the country in a similar position so I hope this case will lead to greater awareness and fairer treatment for everyone."

Andy is represented by human rights solicitor Carolin Ott and Aurelia Buelens from law firm Leigh Day. Counsel is Tom Royston and Alexa

Thompson from Garden Court North Chambers.

Ms Ott said: "This case raises serious concerns about the way Somerset Council’s scheme operates in practice. Our client’s circumstances and level of need have not changed, yet he has gone from paying no council tax to facing charges of more than £1,000 a year, simply because he was migrated to Universal Credit.

"The court has rightly recognised that our client’s claim is arguable on all grounds, and we now look forward to the substantive hearing where the lawfulness of the scheme will be fully tested. The case has potential wider implications for many other residents in similar situations whose migration to Universal Credit has impacted their eligibility for council tax reductions."

A spokesperson for Somerset Council said: "We are aware of a number of claimants transitioning from the Government's legacy benefits, including Income Related Employment and Support Allowance, to Universal Credit.

"Such claimants are no longer entitled to receive an automatic element of the financial assistance that receipt of Income Related Employment and Support Allowance offered in relation to their Council Tax payments.

"Although Universal Credit

does not offer this automatic entitlement, we operate a Council Tax Reduction Scheme (CTR scheme) which must be designed, consulted upon and implemented in advance of the upcoming financial year.

"Recognising the concerns that such claimants have, we are undertaking a fundamental review of our CTR scheme to ensure that it remains fit for purpose, inclusive and affordable, and we will be consulting on the scheme in summer 2026 for implementation in April 2027.

"We also operate a means tested Exceptional Hardship Scheme to support the most vulnerable. We have always taken steps to provide support for residents with the greatest need and we would encourage anyone concerned to speak to our teams about the different support packages which may be available to them."

Previously, Cllr Liz Leyshon, executive lead member for resources, procurement and performance, said: "We know many people are rightly concerned about the impact of these national changes on their Council Tax Reduction support," she said.

"While we cannot make significant changes to our CTR scheme this year, as we do not have time for a comprehensive review and public consultation, we do have the ability to ensure anyone impacted can seek support via our Exceptional Hardship Fund."

Linda Burnip, co-founder of Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC), said: "DPAC remain very concerned that disabled people who were told they would have the same income after forced migration to Universal Credit are suddenly finding themselves liable for sometimes huge increases in council tax and social care charges pushing them further and further into poverty."

Air ambulance set for Yeovil HQ move

AIR ambulances could soon be setting off on journeys to help people in Somerset and Dorset from Yeovil.

The Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance (DSAA) has announced ambitious plans to create a new operational base at the Leonardo site in the town, as well as introducing a second helicopter to the fleet as demand for urgent air ambulance services “continues to rise”, with missions more than tripling over the last decade.

A 35-year lease for a site at helicopter manufacturer Leonardo in Yeovil has been signed, with the firm offering the location free, and would be run independently.

The charity said the new base would offer “purpose-built spaces for patient interaction, training, operational coordination and community engagement”.

However, the plan will go through several steps before becoming a reality, including public consultation this summer, followed by planning permission and raising the

necessary funds.

In the meantime, the DSAA will continue operating from Henstridge Airfield with the support of Geoff Jarvis and the community.

Elsewhere, the DSAA last year launched the 2ndHeli Appeal to help fund the purchase and equipping of a second helicopter for Dorset and Somerset as part of a plan to expand capacity.

The aircraft has undergone test flights and is now getting ready for its flight to Gloucestershire Airport, where Gama Aviation will customise it for Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) missions and is set to be operational this summer.

Charles Hackett, CEO of DSAA, said: “Firstly, and most importantly, we want to express our sincere thanks for the wonderful support we have received and continue to receive from Geoff Jarvis at Henstridge Airfield and the local community.

“Their support has taken us from our humble beginnings as a very small operation, flying

only a few hours a day, to a transformation in care for our patients.

“Today, DSAA is one of the most advanced air ambulances services in the UK, touching thousands of lives every year.

“We want to assure the people of Yeovil and our wider community

that we are committed to working transparently and collaboratively with all stakeholders throughout the process.

dedicated to providing critical care and rapid response to those in need.

“To this end, DSAA will be launching a public consultation in mid-2026, giving residents and stakeholders the chance to view the emerging proposals, ask questions, and share their views.

“We hope the consultation will help shape our plans and build backing for the new facility, designed to support our life-saving service for years to come.

“As we embark on this exciting journey, we remain

“In the meantime, we are deeply grateful to be able to continue operating from Henstridge thanks to the incredible support of Geoff Jarvis and all those who support our life-saving work.”

In October last year, DSAA announced it was allocating £30 million from reserves to fund the purchase and fit-out of a second helicopter, as well as redeveloping its operational base, and to support modernisation projects.

Spotlights will be powered by sunlight at Frome venue thanks to council's support

APERFORMING arts venue is Frome has been boosted by the installation of solar power –meaning spotlights will be powered by sunlight.

The Lucky Chance, a venue and rehearsal space in the former Portway Methodist Church, was founded by the Emma Rice Company after the theatre group bought the property in 2022.

After buying the building, the group aimed to power it sustainably, and got support from Frome Town Council (FTC).

“Frome Town Council supported them to achieve their vision for this historic building,” an FTC spokesperson said.

“The council’s renewable energy team has also recently helped the Cheese and Grain switch to solar power as part of their ambition to be a carbonneutral venue.”

Now fully operational, solar panels at The Lucky Chance are expected to generate around 11,000 kWh of electricity per year.

It means that on sunny days, they can produce more electricity than the building consumes, allowing the battery to store excess energy for later use, dramatically reducing the groups’ energy bills and carbon emissions.

Emma Rice, artistic director at The Emma Rice Company, said: “From the very beginning of the Lucky Chance project, we wanted to honour this remarkable space not just as a cultural venue, but as part of a sustainable future for Frome.

“Installing solar panels was an obvious choice — it aligns with our environmental values and dramatically reduces our energy costs. And our battery means the sun energy continues to power our wonderful Frome venue into the night.

“We’re particularly grateful to Frome Town Council for their vision and support in helping make renewable energy a reality

for local organisations. Their leadership shows that even in conservation areas, renewable energy can play a key role in strengthening both our cultural and ecological wellbeing.”

FTC renewable energy coordinator, Will Reynolds, added: “The Lucky Chance story shows that it’s possible to achieve effective solar projects, even in a heritage building like The Lucky Chance, close to one of Frome’s conservation areas.

“Early planning, strong stakeholder engagement, and sustainable decision-making were behind the success of this project.

“The result is a low-carbon,

energy-resilient venue that powers theatre and climate action in equal measure.

“Our team can provide tailored advice for your business or your home to facilitate a switch to green energy, from practical knowhow and finding the right supplier to funding support. Please get in touch with us at renewables@ frometowncouncil.gov.uk to discuss how solar or other sustainable energy solutions can work for you.”

for new cadets HQ in Glastonbury

LASTONBURY

Sea Cadets could soon have a new home - if plans are approved.

Orme, on behalf of Glastonbury Sea Cadets, has submitted plans to Somerset Council to replace the existing building and container off Benedict Street.

As well as a replacement hall for the cadets, a garage would be built on the site to accommodate a minibus and trailer."

The cadets currently lease the single-storey building from Tor Leisure Centre, which was fenced off in 2006 for "safety purposes".

"The existing building is of poor condition, with very limited internal space for the activities taking place. Therefore, the proposal is to replace the building to provide better facilities and services for the local community," the application said.

The new building would have almost double the floorspace of the current structure - 330 sq m compared to the current 157 sq m - laid out in a T shape.

It would be constructed using corrugated grey steel and timber cladding and brick, with a corrugated steel roof and powder coated black aluminium windows and doors.

New bus route planned from Glastonbury to Castle Cary station

GLASTONBURY to London in two-and-ahalf hours could soon be possible - if a bid for funding to launch a new bus route is successful.

Town travellers are being urged to have their say over a proposal to create a new bus service between Glastonbury and Castle Cary station - with the timetable in synch with trains.

The bid is being overseen by the Glastonbury TrainLink group, which hopes to secure around £150,000 to run the service as a trial for at least six months.

"Our rail network provides a low carbon option of travel,

however getting access to this network is not always easy," the group said.

"Glastonbury has no direct public transport service to our nearest station, Castle Cary. We want to be the first town to provide a dedicated bus service that's primary purpose is to link up with train arrivals and departures from their nearest railway station."

Now, the group wants to hear from people about the potential new route via an online survey at glastonburytrainlink.org.

Glastonbury TrainLink hopes to secure funding through the Local Authority Bus Grant (LABG), with Somerset Council awarded £4.3 million a year for

the next three years.

Through the Somerset Bus Partnership, the request has been put forward.

"Getting to the station can be tricky sometimes, especially if you are not driving, are too young or old to drive, do not have a car, are drinking alcohol or if it is too expensive," the group went on.

"For younger generations, the added convenience of travel truly opens up the world broadening their horizons and ultimately creating more opportunities."

n For more details - and to take part in the survey - see glastonburytrainlink.org/survey.

Chard Carnival hands out donations

DONATIONS from collections at Chard Carnival were presented to a host of causes during the event’s end-of-year presentation.

Volunteers and more gathered on January 25 to celebrate the event, which took place on October 11 last year, with a total of £6,207.56 handed to schools, groups, carnival clubs and organisations.

Chairman of the carnival, Cllr Jason Baker, said: “Carnival is something that we always look forward to in Chard and is one of the high points of the year.

“Last year we saw one of the largest crowds that we have had for some years which was great to see, we had to make some changes to our route last year which saw the full line up in Millfield rather than in Numatics as it has been for some years.

“This seemed to go smoothly and we would like to thank everyone for their support with this.

“Again, we saw entries from across the carnival circuits with entries from both Somerset, Devon and county circuits, which is always great to see and makes Chard the largest of the

south Somerset Carnivals, which we are both grateful and proud of.

“We all know we need to support our local clubs and committees to keep this great tradition alive, Chard Carnival is now in its 131st year and has raised tens of thousands of pounds over the years for local charities and organisations including Chard Christmas Lights, Children’s Hospice Southwest, Chard Hospital, Air Ambulance, Chard Rugby Club, Scouts, Brownies, all the local schools and many other good causes.

“It has been great to find pictures which are held at the museum and by others showing how far Chard carnival stretches back.

“This makes it the oldest carnival in South Somerset.”

As well as the carnival itself, the committee run events throughout the year, including the annual Street Fayre in September, which last year saw more than 50 stalls line Holyrood Street.

Other events included bingo, a Carnival Quiz, a Craft Fayre & Beacon Lighting, and more.

Cllr Baker thanked the committee for their hard work, as well as sponsors including

Tesco, C&D Transport, Slade’s Garage, Cricket St Thomas Hotel, The Phoenix Hotel and Kilmington Cross Garage, and Devon Truck Show.

Carnival Royalty in Chard for 2025 were Kezzia, Hope and Archie, who raised £3,568.30.

Zak Williams, who oversees collectors and collections, thanked everyone who took part, and said: “It can be a long, repetitive job to sort through thousands of coins and make sure every penny is accounted for, but with more people, we have fun and get the job done quickly. Thank you.

“Whether you gave a pound, carried a bucket, or counted a stack of silver, you’ve helped keep this tradition alive for another year. Thank you.”

Schools who supported carnival by selling light up toys – keeping 50% of profits –were: Redstart School, Avishayes School, Tatworth School and Manor Court School.

New Dominos set to open near Bridgwater

PIZZA chain Domino's is opening near Bridgwater and North Petherton.

The food giant is launching a new store at the Gateway, off M5 Junction 24 of the M5, near Lidl and Costa Coffee.

Opening from 11.30am until late each day, delivery will be on offer to 3am - catering for late-night hunger.

As well as providing food for hungry Somerset residents, the store is also recruiting for roles to help jobseekers earn some dough from dough.

The new Bridgwater Dominos will open at noon on March 9, with the first 100 small pizza portions going free to the first customers, alongside merchandise and deals on the day.

Shayban Al Ibrahim, franchise partner, said: "We’re incredibly excited to be expanding our Domino’s presence with the opening of our brand-new store at Bridgwater Gateway.

"This new location will allow us to deliver a faster, more efficient service - ensuring hot, fresh pizza made daily reaches even more customers across the wider Bridgwater area.

"As a local franchisee, this is a proud step forward for our business and the community.

"This new store represents more than just great pizza; it strengthens our ability to support the local economy, create jobs, and provide the quality, speed, and service that the people of Bridgwater expect and deserve."

Plans for up to 80 new homes near Street

ALMOST 80 new homes could be built near Street is plans are approved.

An application to Somerset Council by Clifton Emery Design, on behalf of Land Value Alliances LLP, would see up to 78 new homes and commercial space developed on a site off Main Street, in Walton.

Made up of one, two, three, and four-bedroom homes, the plans said 30% of the properties built on the 3.9-hectare site would be 'affordable'.

It is made up of two fields, divided by a fence, with current access from Veal Lane and East Mead Lane, though a new vehicular access is proposed off the A38 Main Street.

As well as the homes and 158 sq m of commercial space, the scheme includes 2.1 hectares of 'public open space' with footpaths and more.

"The plan is formed around a hierarchy of streets and open spaces," the application said.

"The main vehicular junction is proposed off Walton Main Street to the north east of the site, with a pedestrian connection linking to the bus stop and pavement adjacent to the site, to the north

of the Main Street.

"The primary route is punctuated by tree planting, taking advantage of the site’s existing mature trees and ensuring that the site have a memorable, green

entrance."

It said the outline plans had been created to "provide flexible development platforms that are capable of incorporating a variety of house types". Current shrubs, vines and trees would be retained as much as possible, the plans said, while avoiding development in flood-risk spots.

The outline plan - and 'illustrative layout' - include 17 one-bed flats, 12 two-bed properties, 23 two-bed houses, 11 threebed houses and 15 four-bed houses.

However, the exact details would be put forward in a later, detailed application, should the outline plans be approved.

Delay over council tax rise decision

ADECISION over a proposed increase in council tax of up to 11% has been delayed due to a decision from central government being put back.

Somerset Council has moved decision-making timetables for the upcoming budget due to the delaying of the Final Local Government Settlement from the government.

That will now be published on February 9, a week later than previously expected, knocking back the council’s budgetsetting process.

That February 9 announcement is expected to confirm whether the council will be allowed to propose an increase in county council tax rates above the referendum limit (4.99%). It will also confirm whether financial support will be provided to help address the accumulated Dedicated Schools Grant deficit.

Cllr Bill Revans, leader of Somerset Council, said: “This delay from Government is deeply frustrating. We are having to move our meetings only because the information we need to set a lawful and responsible budget is being

provided later than expected.

“This is not a situation of the council’s making, and it is vital that we have the time required to understand the implications fully and make well-informed decisions on behalf of Somerset residents.”

Given the delays, Somerset Council is adjusting its February and March meetings to ensure members can fully consider the 2026/27 budget:

n February 11: Executive meeting focusing on HRA rent setting for 2026/27 n February 25: Extraordinary

Executive to consider savings, growth, fees and charges and HRA budget recommendations

n March 4: Rescheduled Full Council meeting to set the 2026/27 budget

n March 5: Reserve Executive date

n March 6: Reserve Full Council date

The news comes after the council unveiled proposals to increase council tax rates by around 11% as it attempts to tackle a £73 million funding gap to provide public services.

Part of the effort is a request

for permission to increase the council tax by a rate above 4.99%, which would usually require a referendum.

Last year, Somerset Council was allowed to raise the tax rate by 7.49% after the government approved Exceptional Financial Support (EFS) measures and a capitalisation direction, allowing the authority to sell assets or borrow to cover day-to-day funding.

The measures are intended as ‘one-off’ support, but Somerset has once again had to request the allowance.

No Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza for 2026

THERE will be no Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza in 2026, organisers have confirmed.

The annual show, at Glastonbury Abbey, is organised by the Glastonbury Festival as a thank you to the town for their support for the event, at nearby Pilton.

In 2025, it boasted a bill headlined by The Script, alongside the likes of Freya Ridings and the Wells Cathedral Oratorio Society.

However, the Abbey has now confirmed the event will not take place this year, which also sees Glastonbury take a fallow year.

“Unfortunately, there will be no Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza taking place this year,” a spokesperson said.

“Glastonbury Festival, who produce the Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza, have

made the decision to take a total fallow year in 2026, meaning neither Glastonbury Festival itself nor the Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza will take place.”

However, they said people can still buy

tickets to the Night At The Abbey show, featuring live music and DJs, on September 12.

Hold your feet to the fire - for charity!

PEOPLE are being enoucraged to hold their feet to the fire - literally - in aid of a Somerset charity.

The St Margaret’s Firewalk, raising funds for the hospice charity, will take place on Friday, February 27, at the Yeovil facility.

Participants will take on the challenge of walking barefoot across glowing embers, cheered on by friends, family and fellow supporters.

Expert training and guidance is provided on the night, with the challenge is open to anyone ready to push past their limits and "do something extraordinary for local hospice care".

Shauna Booker, events manager at St Margaret’s Hospice Care, said: "Firewalking is about far more than facing the flames. It’s about people coming together, challenging themselves and turning up the heat for hospice care in their community.

"Every step taken across the embers helps us be there for families across Somerset at some of the most difficult times in their lives."

Display of protest photographs at cathedral

BLACK Lives Matter demonstrations that took place in London and Somerset will be the subject of an exhibition at Wells Cathedral which opens next week.

The photographic display, entitled A Celebration of Demonstration, will run from February 3 to March 1 and showcase the work of Londonbased photographer, designer, filmmaker and activist, Wayne Campbell, alongside Somerset snappers Jason Bryant and Len Copland.

The exhibition is part of a series of Resistance, Racial Justice and Reconciliation events planned by the cathedral, in association with the Somerset African Caribbean Network (SACN).

Susann Savidge, chair of the SACN, said: “We have cocurated this exhibition as an opportunity to reflect back on the Black Lives Matter protests and marches that took place

nationally and locally in 2020, following the tragic death of George Floyd.

“Somerset African Caribbean Network recognises and respects the activists, individuals, families and members of the community who stood in solidarity in Somerset. For some it was a new experience. For others a troubling and weary reminder of

past injustices and continuing struggle.”

Wayne Campbell will speak at the exhibition’s preview on February 2, joined by Richard Reddie, director of justice and inclusion for Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, focussing on racial injustice, resistance and finding ways to repair.

Other Resistance, Racial Justice and Reconciliation

events taking place at the cathedral in February include a special Racial Justice Sunday service on February 8, with guest preacher The Revd Canon Sonia Barron, former co-chair of the Church of England’s Anti-Racism Taskforce and member of the Archbishops Commission for Racial Justice.

On February 25, Wells Cathedral is also planning an evening of talks to discuss the legacy of transatlantic slavery and reparative action.

It will feature a talk by John Dower, a reparations campaigner and co-founder of Heirs of Slavery.

Celebration of Demonstration runs at Wells Cathedral from February 3 to March 1. Entry is included with the standard cathedral admission price. n For more information about Resistance, Racial Justice and Reconciliation services and events, visit www. wellscathedral.org.uk.

'Remarkable' bookshop and cafe lands £5k

ASOMERSET business has been recognised as one of six winners in a national competition.

The Snug Bookshop and Café, an independent outlet in Huish Episcopi, has been named among six winners of Realising the Remarkable, run in collaboration with Enterprise Nation and VistaPrint.

Realising the Remarkable awarded £30,000 in funding to small businesses rooted in their communities, with the six independent retailers each receiving a £5,000 grant, as well as and marketing support from VistaPrint.

This year, more than 1,100 businesses applied, with a final 23 invited to submit a twominute pitch explaining how funding would help them grow.

A spokesperson for the initiative said: "The final six stood out for their purpose and commitment to their local high streets.

"Together, they reflect a strong shift toward purpose-led businesses that contribute far beyond their shopfronts."

The Snug Bookshop and Café landed the grant after outlining plans to have a mini 'glow up' and expand into the shop unit next door to create a larger children's book area, including to host storytime sessions and author events.

Owner Sam Carr took on the Brookland Road shop unitswhich had been derelict for more than two decades - three years ago.

"I'm blown away," she said. "The judges thought we are Remarkable, and that alone means a lot.

"Doubt, imposter syndrome and the feeling that you're never going to be as good as the Big

Guys is crippling some days. But what we do on the high street does matter.

"We create connections, boost community participation and a safe place for everyone to come to."

Sabine Levellier, VP of marketing at VistaPrint, said: "At VistaPrint, we see every day the impact small businesses have on the communities they serve.

"Our research shows that demand for physical stores is growing again, underlining the importance of strong marketing and first impressions.

"Now in its third year, Realising the Remarkable continues to celebrate the entrepreneurs driving that revival.

"This year's winners reflect the purpose-led, diverse nature of UK small businesses and the vital role they play in bringing high streets and local communities to life."

Yeovil pub closed for sports bar makeover

AYEOVIL pub has closed – but only for a £376,000 makeover.

The Arrow is undergoing an overhaul before it re-opens as a ‘Grandstand’ sports pub, owner Marston’s has confirmed.

They said the venue, in The Forum, will return with a new design to “deliver a stadiumstyle experience on every visit”, including three-metre-long and 1.8-metre-tall screens, state-ofthe-art sound systems, and tiered seating “to guarantee a

great view of the action”.

Meanwhile, a refurbished outdoor area is promised with TV screens.

“The Arrow will also be decorated with local sports memorabilia and is calling on the community to share photographs and items to help celebrate the achievements of local sports stars and teams, past and present,” a spokesperson said.

Louise Goodland, pub partner, added: “We’re so

excited to show off the new and improved pub. With a calendar of sports up ahead, it will be the perfect destination to get involved in big event atmosphere and soak up the action, especially thanks to some amazing new technology, food and drink offers and events.”

She said the pub would show key sporting fixtures, including football, rugby, cricket, tennis, F1, darts, horse racing, and more.

Regulation dart boards and pool tables will return, alongside new competition leagues and free-to-play recreational sessions.

Marston’s said The Arrow would re-open on February 18. n For more information, and to book a table for the reopening, visit arrowyeovil.co. uk.

New £100m junction off M5 planned to serve battery factory

ANEW £100 million motorway junction on the M5 in Somerset will be built between Burnham-onSea and Bridgwater – serving the new £4 billion gigafactory near Puriton.

The scheme, overseen by the Regional Delivery Partnership, has named builder Costain as the contractor for the new junction, set to be 22A.

It is estimated the new access road will be some five years in the making, providing a route for drivers to the Gravity Smart Campus and the gigafactory being developed by Agratas,

which is set to be Britain’s largest electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant.

Costain said it is hoped the junction, which will consist of north-facing slip roads, “will alleviate congestion on the motorway south of the Huntspill river”.

“This award is built on our long-established highways delivery expertise and trusted partner relationship with National Highways,” said Alex Vaughan, chief executive officer. “We will work closely with our supply chain partners to design and deliver this new

junction that will provide access to the new gigafactory and help to drive economic growth in this region of the UK.

“This investment, supporting the UK’s growth ambitions, is another example of Costain’s commitment to deliver critical national infrastructure programmes that improve people’s lives.”

Bus lane closure

THE bus lane on a major route in Weston-super-Mare has closed to general traffic this week due to roadworks.

The route, by Food Warehouse in Weston, shut on January 28 to enable Openreach utility works ahead of the major Queensway junction improvement scheme, set to begin in June.

Previously, the bus lane was opened to general traffic to ease left turn congestion from Bristol Road into Queensway, but it will close to vehicles other than buses as Openreach constructs an underground chamber and diverts services on the Bristol Roadside of the junction.

“Openreach services are among the many utilities that run underneath our road network,” a North Somerset Council spokesperson said.

“These utilities services ensure that water, gas, electricity and internet can reach homes and businesses in the local area. Utilities diversions ahead of construction works are vital as they help to prevent situations where these important services can be accidentally cut off from properties.”

ASOMERSET animal rescue charity is appealing for support – as it is running out of hay.

Rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming charity Ferne Animal Sanctuary has launched an urgent appeal to help replenish its depleting feed stocks.

The charity needs to raise £5,000 to purchase an additional 1,000 hay bales to restock reserves following “a particularly challenging summer and winter period”.

“The long dry summer reduced growing yields in the meadows at the sanctuary, followed by a wet winter where the land has been too soaked for grazing animals to stay in the fields,” a spokesperson said.

and winter creates the most challenging conditions for our grazing animals.

“Hot and dry weather stops the grass growing and when this is followed by prolonged wet conditions as we have had this autumn, natural grazing and foraging becomes impossible across two consecutive seasons.

“This pairing of conditions forced us to rely on supplementing natural grazing with hay much earlier than usual.

The weather has left the charity relying on its hay supplies for much longer period than usual, they said, leading to a long-term supply problem.

Nikki Haddock, animal care and estates manager at the sanctuary, said: “The mix of a long and dry summer followed immediately by a wet autumn

“This year, we began using hay in July, whereas we would normally wait until October or November, when the growing season naturally ends.

“Over the course of an average year we buy 2,000 bales of hay and this year our bill is around £10,000. This winter we have already used 1,000 bales and we need the additional 1,000 bales to take us through to the next harvest in late spring.

“This puts a huge pressure on our reserves, as we can’t leave the animals without basic nourishment.”

Animal rescue's desperate plea for donations as it is running out of hay

The charity said hay prices had more than doubled since January 2025, with many UK farmers reporting yields 50% lower than expected.

Nikki added: “We currently have over 106 animals who rely on hay for sustenance, including horses, cows, pigs, goats and guinea pigs.

“Please help to refill our barn and buy the forage our fourlegged residents need over the coming months. Every single

donation will make a difference and help keep those bellies full.”

n Financial donations can be made via Ferne’s dedicated JustGiving page, at https:// justgiving.com/campaign/ helpfillthehaybarn, or donations of clean and untouched hay bales can be delivered to Ferne Animal Sanctuary, Wambrook, Chard, TA20 3DH. To arrange a hay donation, contact info@ ferneanimalsanctuary.org.

Early sowing is the secret for sweet harvest

AMONG the earliest crops to pick from the vegetable garden are broad beans that have been sown in November/December. The variety Aquadulce is the classic, slow-growing form that needs to be sown during the winter.

If you are just starting your new vegetable bed, and have forgotten or overlooked autumn-sown broad beans, it is very tempting to think this famous overwintering form will respond to the warming soil if it is sown after Christmas and still produce its bean-pods earlier than the main-crop. But it grows slowly. The pods will appear, but later in the season, not in May, but at just the time the blackflies are becoming prolific. They are just waiting for your delicious crop of beans to smother with their nasty offspring.

Overwintered broad beans

Green broad bean pods happily growing

should start into productive growth early in spring, and the small, sweet beans should be ripe before mid-summer. But if a few main-crop broad beans are sown into a large deep container in January, and brought into the relative warmth of a cold greenhouse, they will produce beans a few weeks

early. The blackfly might still find them, but they would avoid any of those destructive spring frosts, and certainly be out of the weather during a very cold winter.

Sow the beans individually 5cm deep with the black scar facing downwards. This is the point the root will emerge from.

Water them well and put the pots somewhere warm and sunny. It is a good idea to give the emerging plants a liquid feed high in potassium, to increase their yield. Tomato fertiliser works well. Make sure it is well diluted. Too strong a mixture could reverse the process of osmosis and draw the moisture out of the bean seeds and young plants.

Mice are Public Enemy Number One when you are sowing any peas and beans. They are insatiable and seem to be just waiting for you to finish laying out their dinners. A little crumpled netting should deter the greedy ones.

After a cold, wet winter, a plate of small broad beans, picked young and sweet, dripping with melted butter, will make all the bother worthwhile. It will be a well-deserved dish, worth waiting for throughout this nasty winter.

Could you plant a wood, copse or hedge?

LANDOWNERS, or those with control of a patch of land, are being encouraged to come forward for support in planting small woods, copses, hedgerows and more.

County group, Reimagining the Levels (RtL), is in the midst of another hectic planting season - and wants people to come forward to boost Somerset's green spaces.

Since RtL joined forces with the Somerset Rivers Authority, Green Scythe Fair, Carbon Aware Productions and the Woodland Trust, it has helped plant more than 120,000 new trees and shrubs.

"These are now growing into small woods, some joining up with existing woodland, others entirely new," a spokesperson said.

"Plus copses, leafy avenues, agroforestry sites, orchard replacements and miles and

miles of hedgerows. No wonder we are incredibly proud."

Somerset is the most treedepleted county in the UK, which is the most tree-depleted country in Europe.

RtL is hoping to change that, and at the same time help with flood prevention, increase soil stability and fertility, filter out pollutants in the water courses, support insects, mammals and birds, provide food, shelter and beauty for all.

"We want to do more," the spokesperson went on. "We have a tree nursery bursting with almost 50 varieties of trees and shrubs waiting to go into ground near you.

"If you have a patch of land, or know someone who does, please get in touch. We can visit and offer advice on where, what and how to plant.

"We can help with obtaining a grant for flood prevention if applicable and we also have

funds available for community groups or other landscapes that would clearly benefit from planting.

"We make the whole process easy and painless with our expertise and know how."

Taking action to tackle flooding frustration

FLOODING is an ever present concern for many people across Somerset, and particularly here in the Glastonbury and Somerton constituency which is especially vulnerable, with low-lying land and river catchments that can become overwhelmed very quickly when prolonged and heavy rain sets in.

After storm Chandra, we saw the Currymoor Flood Storage area fill in just four days, which normally takes 10 - a situation the Environment Agency told me was unprecedented. Indeed, my inbox has been full of correspondence from constituents who have told me how anxious they feel whenever more rain is forecast, knowing how saturated the ground already is.

Last week I was out across the constituency speaking directly to residents and businesses affected by flooding. I saw first hand damaged homes, heard about disrupted livelihoods and the emotional

toll that repeated flooding takes.

Unfortunately, there is more rain expected and it will not take much for problems to return as the rain water has nowhere to go, so I would urge everyone to stay alert and be prepared. Keep an eye on my social media pages for timely updates and more resources.

What frustrates me deeply is that too often communities at risk of flooding feel left to fend for themselves. I have long called for resources and funding to be made available to support community extreme weather plans and will continue to help drive flood-preparedness forward locally.

Later this month I will be convening a flooding event here in Somerset, bringing together residents and key partners and stakeholders including: Somerset Council, the Internal

Drainage Board, the Somerset Rivers Authority and FWAG.

The aim is to share advice, listen to lived experience and work collaboratively on practical solutions that can help build flood resilience and better protect our communities in Glastonbury and Somerton.

I have consistently been pushing the Government for action: holding them to account in Parliament and writing to the Minister to invite her to visit and see for herself, which I'm glad she's accepted, but not until the spring.

I will be taking everything I heard from constituents last week back to the relevant agencies and to Westminster. And I will continue pressing the Government to properly fund flood resilience, long term land management, local authorities and especially the Environment

Agency to treat flooding with the urgency it deserves.

I am particularly concerned about the Environment Agency’s recent decision to remove funding for main river management, and instead, put the responsibility on individual riparian owners, who often lack the skills or resources and can ill-afford to complete this vital flood preventing work.

Somerset will always be at the forefront of climate change and at risk of flooding, but with the right planning, investment and joined-up working, we can reduce the risks and help people feel safer in their homes. I will keep fighting to make sure Somerset gets the support it deserves.

As always, I want to hear from you. If you would like to share your views, have an issue I can help with, or wish to register your interest to attend one of my regular advice surgeries, please don’t hesitate to contact me on sarah.dyke. mp@parliament.uk.

MP calls for consultation over council tax

BRIDGWATER MP Sir Ashley Fox has backed calls for Somerset residents to be given a say before any further council tax increase above the 4.99% referendum limit.

Somerset Council has proposed raising the tax by around 11%, following a 7.5% increase last year, and has asked the government for permission to do so.

It comes as the authority - led by the Liberal Democratslooks to plug a £73 million funding deficit.

However, UK law says councils must hold a referendum over any proposed increase above 4.99% - unless they get the special government permission.

Sir Ashley said that while councils face real financial

pressures, residents "should not be expected to shoulder repeated above-limit tax rises without being consulted".

"Families across Somerset are already under serious pressure from the cost of living," he said.

"Asking them to absorb another above-limit council tax increase, for a second year

running, without even giving them a say, is simply not right."

"Council tax referendums exist for a reason," he added.

"If Somerset Council believes an increase of this scale is unavoidable, it should be prepared to ask the people who will be paying the bill whether they want this and whether they can afford it."

A letter from the Somerset Conservative opposition group will be presented at Somerset Council’s Executive meeting on Wednesday, February 11.

Work on troubled £10 million care home continues as spring opening vaunted

WORK is progressing on a new, state-ofthe-art care home in Wincanton - which is expected to open in the spring.

Bupa is currently refurbishing a 72-bedroom facility in Dyke's Way - after the custom-built building was vacated by the former occupants having welcomed just a handful of patients.

The healthcare firm said the site - The Bridles - would see "quality furnishings, fixtures and fittings" installed over the next five months.

"The Bridles’ interior has been carefully designed to offer premium comfort and outstanding facilities, including two restaurants, a bar, café, hair salon, therapy room, relaxing lounges and a home cinema," a Bupa spokesperson said.

Innovative technology will also support care home staff, they said, including thermal

sensors, voice activated devices and an online portal for families.

Bupa Care Homes managing director, Danni Davies, said:

"We are proud and excited to be bringing this luxurious new home to Wincanton. We’re looking forward to recruiting a compassionate team, welcoming residents and building relationships with our local

community."

The care home will provide nursing, residential and specialist dementia care, while creating job opportunities. Bupa took on the building after, in September last year, your Leveller revealed the home was closing having only ever welcomed four tenants under previous owner, Cornerstone Healthcare.

The £10 million facility was put up for sale after a troubled birth – with work coming to a halt in 2022 amid the collapse of construction firm, Midas. Now, a show suite is set to open at the site in February and for more information about living at The Bridles in Wincanton, or joining the care home team, register interest at www.bupa.co.uk/the-bridles.

Elderly and others urged to get RSV vaccine

PEOPLE over 75 in Somerset are being urged to take up a vaccine to protect them from a potentially-deadly illness.

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), which can be much more serious for over 75s and anyone with a weaker immune system or long-term health condition, is common in the winter season.

Brunel Precinct, Somerton 01458 274 066

It often starts like a simple cold, but can quickly lead to pneumonia and breathing problems, which can lead to hospital stays – especially in colder months.

Each year, around 9,000 over 75s become infected with RSV and have to be admitted to hospital.

But help is at hand to protect people, said

At Cobbs we stock everything you need for healthy baking!

We also offer a range of muesli blends and granolas blended to our own exclusive recipes. Low in sugar and high in nutrients!

Mike Kelly, NHS Somerset’s programme lead neighbourhoods and vaccinations.

“What many people don’t realise is that the NHS now offers a free RSV vaccine that protects against this virus.

“It’s a newer vaccination for older adults, which is why you may not have heard much about it yet. But it can make

a real difference to staying well over the winter months.”

Anyone who is, or has a family member who is 75 or over, is being urged to make time to get protected through a small jab.

The NHS is offering the RSV vaccine to people aged between 75 and 79, those who turned 80 years old after September 1, 2024, and to pregnant women from 28 weeks, as it also protects newborn babies during their first months of life.

In Somerset, nearly 15,000 over-75s who are eligible to have the RSV vaccine have not yet taken it up.

Most will have been invited to get the vaccine by letter, text or telephone call from their GP, but over-75s can contact their GP to book a jab.

Dr Rob Weaver, GP and deputy chief medical officer at NHS Somerset, said: “RSV can be more serious in older adults than many people realise. Vaccination offers important protection against severe illness, including complications such as pneumonia."
