Putting a bookmark in 30 years of Taunton Library

BOOK lovers in Taunton united to mark 30 years of their town centre library.

It is three decades since the Paul Street facility opened its doors, and staff, residents and partners gathered to reflect on the years of learning, connection and community spirit.

Leader of Somerset Council, Bill Revans (Lib Dem, North Petherton), himself a former Taunton Library employee, was part of the event, joined by Mayor of Taunton, Cllr Martin Straus, as special guests.

They judged a children’s Lego-build competition and were shown an exhibition of pictures and memorabilia showing the history of the library.

Guests enjoyed coffee and cake kindly supplied by the Friends of Taunton Library.

“Libraries are at the heart of our communities, and Taunton Library’s 30-year journey on Paul Street shows just how important these spaces are,” Cllr Revans said.

“It’s inspiring to see how the library has grown from its early

days of microfiche readers and CD collections into a vibrant hub supporting health, learning and wellbeing for residents of all ages.”

The anniversary is celebrating not only the building’s history, but the people who have shaped it since February 1996, when the library relocated from Corporation Street – a move which included staff and volunteers transporting books through the streets of Taunton.

The original move was completed in a week, with staff

and volunteers wheeling books through the streets on wooden trolleys, packing and unpacking hundreds of boxes, and even inviting customers to borrow more books than usual to lighten the load.

On opening day, schoolchildren carried books to the new building, balloons were released, and live jazz filled the air.

Now, 30 years on, Taunton Library offers beyond books, including free access to technology, health and

wellbeing support, a programme of activities for all ages, a café run by Young Somerset, and the Somerset Independent Living Centre.

Visitors today can access free Wi-Fi, public computers and a range of items to borrow, from iPads and fitness trackers to blood pressure monitors and thermal imaging cameras.

The library’s dedicated wellbeing area hosts NHS health checks, low-impact activity sessions and support for families, alongside events including story times, creative writing groups, gaming sessions, poetry, tech help and the Taunton Literary Festival.

The building also houses a café run by Young Somerset and the Somerset Independent Living Centre, offering advice and resources to help people live independently.

Frome leader announces "heartbreaking" breast cancer diagnosis amid charity plea

LEADER and chair of Frome Town CouncilFiona Barrows - has shared news of her recent diagnosis of breast cancer.

The town leader revealed the diagnosis at a council meeting on February 18 - and pledged support for counselling charity We Hear You (WHY), which is aiming to raise £55,000 by the end of March to save their counselling service for anyone affected or bereaved by a life-threatening condition.

Speaking remotely at the meeting, Cllr Barrows said: "I’m joining you remotely this evening, because I was diagnosed with breast cancer last month.

"It is on both sides and in both sets of lymph nodes, which means treatment will be intensive and extensive, starting with six months of chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

"The timing of this diagnosis is, if I’m honest, heartbreaking. I think you all know how much I love being in this role as leader and chair, and how much I love this town. There is so much work underway, so much momentum, and so much more I want to do.

"Thank you to my fellow councillors and to all of FTC

staff for your support over the past few weeks, it has really meant so much to me.

"And thank you now for going out of your way to make sure I can attend meetings online and continue to be effective in my role, even at a slight distance. I really do appreciate it."

And she then made a personal appeal for people to back the WHY fundraising effort.

"If you are able to, I would really love you to consider supporting our local charity, We Hear You," she went on.

"In so many of my appointments at the RUH, WHY’s name has come up. Doctors and nurses have spoken about how valued their support is, how much people have benefited from it, and how sad they are that the charity is facing possible closure, and that their waiting list is currently closed.

"Frome is known for coming together as a community so if you would like to support me, I would ask you to transfer that support to We Hear You, and help keep them going for the many people in our community who they support through the

toughest times in their lives. Thank you."

Lucy Kitchener, CEO of WHY, said: "On behalf of the people we support, our team and our trustees, I want to say a huge and heartfelt thank you to Fiona for her kindness and generosity.

"WHY is facing a serious funding shortfall at the moment, and our vital services are at real risk. If you can, please donate to our appeal – support us at one of our events, host a small fundraising event, or share the appeal page with people you know.

"Every action genuinely helps, and it means we can continue being there for people like Fiona in the hardest of times."

Family's tribute to "perfect son" found dead

AFAMILY has paid tribute to a “perfect son” who died after being reported missing in Somerset last month.

Craig Hurcombe, from Rowde, in neighbouring Wiltshire, was reported missing to Wiltshire Police on Saturday, January 10.

A police search ensued and tragically, human remains were later found in the Roemead Road area of Gurney Slade, Somerset, which were later confirmed to be those of 39-year-old Mr Hurcombe.

His mum, Nicola, and dad, Paul, issued a tribute to him on behalf of the family.

“Craig was the perfect son and an independent man, and we are living with unimaginable loss and a huge hole in our lives which we will never come to terms with,” they said.

“Craig is survived by eight nieces and nephews; Skye, Maddie, Riley, Tillie-Mae, Archie, Harvey, Oakley, and Brodie, who miss him and cannot understand why he is not there to play with them.

“Skye, the eldest niece, has lost her best friend, whom she spent a lot of time eating out and going to watch Bath Rugby with.

“Craig was very hardworking, ambitious, and very well thought of in his circle of work, especially his boss, who has expressed his gratitude for all Craig did for the company.

“Craig has two sisters, Laura and Jessica, and one brother, Ashley, who are grieving a brother they love. He had his

whole life ahead of him, and that was needlessly taken away.”

They said Mr Hurcombe was a passionate sportsman, playing rugby for Sheldon School, Chippenham Rugby Club and Wiltshire and Dorset until he turned 18.

“Craig then went on to play for Devizes Rugby Club, until recently, where he had a tight network of friends who have been left distraught by his death, but have memories of their trip watching the Lions rugby tour in Australia in 2025,” they added.

“Craig was also vicepresident of Devizes Rugby Club, and many other clubs both near and far have left tributes to Craig which has made us aware of how loved he was.

“His meaningless death had an impact on so many people, both old and young.”

Michael Bretton, 40, of Armoury Road, Shaftesbury, Dorset, has been charged with

murder and one count of stalking involving fear of violence against a woman and is listed to appear at Bristol Crown Court for trial on Monday, July 13.

Iron Age Roundhouse - 2,500 years in the making - to be officially opened at event

ARECREATION

of housing on the Somerset Levels some 2,500 years ago is set to be officially opened next month.

On March 21, Avalon Archaeology, at Westhay, near Glastonbury, will unveil its new Iron Age Roundhouse – a replica reconstruction 12 months in the making.

The day will give visitors the chance to check out the new building – complete with authentic bread oven – as well as learning more about Somerset’s prehistory through a range of themed activities.

The new building, constructed by venue volunteers alongside experimental archaeologists from the South West Heritage Trust (SWHT), is based on evidence from the Glastonbury Lake Village, where Iron Age communities built homes and canoes to thrive in the flooded environment of the Somerset Levels.

Members of the public also contributed to the interior decoration, through a prehistoric painting workshop.

Glastonbury Lake Village was occupied for about 150 years at the end of the Iron Age, with a maximum of 20 houses

at any one time, only accessible by water.

Built on wet peat, the waterlogged conditions has resulted in some remarkable preservation of wooden structures and objects that do not normally survive, making it the most well-preserved Iron Age settlement in the UK.

Dr Richard Brunning, an SWHT archaeologist, said: “The roundhouse is built with very small roundwood and relies on its woven structure to give it strength, rather like a large upturned basket.

“The walls are covered in daub, a mixture of clay subsoil, hay and a little horse poo. It is thatched with reed and has a clay floor, central hearth and small bread oven.

“The walls are decorated with impressions of ammonite shells and painted with natural earth colours using milk curds as a binding agent. The patterns are taken from pottery designs from Glastonbury Lake Village.”

Across the weekend of March 21 and 22, visitors can enjoy themed activities exploring prehistoric Somerset, including the chance to recreate part of the Sweet Track using Neolithic tools.

Children will also have the opportunity to dress up in Iron Age costume, with ancient woodwork demonstrations taking place alongside a reconstruction of a dugout canoe.

Dr Brunning added: “This new structure helps bring to life how ancient communities built, travelled, and lived within the landscape of the Levels.

“We hope visitors gain a vivid sense of early society through the reconstructed domestic architecture, alongside the seasonal rituals and traditional crafts on offer.”

Avalon Archaeology is open every Sunday between 10am and 4pm, and on Saturdays

'Election rule changes mean I have to pay to vote', says Somerset OAP

ADISABLED

Yeovil

voter says he is being forced to "pay to vote" after being informed his registration for a postal ballot had expired.

Retired advertising and countryside management worker Norman Browne, who has sent in his vote "for years", said he was surprised to receive a letter from Somerset Council informing him his postal vote registration was due to lapse.

The letters have been sent by the council as the body responsible for overseeing elections, in response to changes to the law around polls introduced in 2022 by Kemi Badenoch as part of the then-Conservative government.

Changes to the law included the introduction of voter ID, requiring people to prove their identity at the polling station, as well as requiring those who vote by post to renew their registration every three years.

Norman is among those now required to renew his registration.

However, he said the notice from Somerset Council, including the documents to fill out, does not include a pre-paid return envelope, meaning heand others like him - will be forced to pay to post their registration back, if they can get out at all.

"You've got to go and get the stamp," the 90-year-old said. "I am being asked to pay to vote, essentially. I am not online.

"I have to write the address out on the form, but my writing is not so good now, and many people rely on carers as they can't get out, so they will have to do it for them."

Norman said while it "may be a small thing for many, it's a big thing for others".

"I have always voted, for nearly all elections, as far as I can remember," he said.

"I've had to have a postal vote because after many years of walking to the polling station, I am now limited (with) my mobility. I have a blue badge."

Somerset Council said it did not make, or change, the rules,

but was required to enforce them.

"The change in postal voter registration rules are the result of the Elections Act 2022," a spokesperson said.

"As the authority responsible for overseeing elections, both local and national, this is statutory obligation which the Electoral Registration Officer at Somerset Council has to fulfil.

"The council has an important responsibility ensuring that all local residents are aware of the changes, however it does not make the registration rulings themselves.

"That is the responsibility of the Electoral Commission who introduce voting reforms to ensure voting processes are secure, resistant to fraud, and so strengthen democracy."

The EC told your Leveller it appreciated there could be a "situation" such as this every three years for postal voters.

A spokesperson said some local authorities may still be sending pre-paid envelopes to voters, but there was no legal

requirement to do so, as Somerset has not done.

They also said people could hand in documents for free at a registration office - but conceded that would require arrangements being made.

But excuses from election authorities - and the avoidance of legal responsibility - are of little comfort to people like Norman, who feel disenfranchised from the democratic system.

"I rely on the postal vote. There are many people like me," he said.

"I'm compos mentis, whereas many people are not, and rely on carers, who will have to do it for them, taking up their time.

"It may be a small thing for many, but it's a big thing for others."

Democracy - and the fairness of it - should be a big thing for all of us.

Rental bikes set to roll in to Frome Station giving people a cheap ride into town!

COMMUTERS will soon be able to hire a bike to get from Frome town centre to the train station –thanks to a £15,000 grant.

As part of its 200th anniversary celebrations, Great Western Railway (GWR) asked for applications to a Customer and Community Improvement Fund for schemes linked to the line.

Frome Town Council (FTC) submitted a successful bid and will receive the money for on-street hire bikes, an on-street hire cargo bike, and new walking and cycling maps linking the station to the town.

All are aimed at better connecting residents and visitors to and from rail services, as well as increasing footfall around the station and into the heart of Frome.

FTC has teamed up with Frome Community Bike Project to provide the on-street hire bikes that will be arriving later this month at Station Approach.

Project spokesperson Emma Parker said: “We’re extremely grateful for this funding from Great Western Railway, which will promote walking and wheeling routes from the station to the town centre, encourage more people to use our train services and give people the

opportunity to try out a cargo bike. The hire bikes will be arriving at the end of February and Frome Community Bike Project are planning a cycling celebration event on Sunday, March 22, to showcase all of the cycling support available in Frome plus there will be the opportunity to find out how to hire and use the on-street hire bikes and cargo bike.”

GWR senior community impact manager, Emma Morris, added: “Our Customer and Community Improvement Fund is a superb programme that allows us to invest locally in projects that have a positive and meaningful impact for our customers and our communities.

“As we mark Railway 200, it’s also a chance to celebrate the lasting impact the railway

has had over two centuries

connecting people, creating jobs, and supporting the growth and prosperity of the communities we serve.

“We’re delighted to support the cycling initiative, which will help provide greater and greener integrated travel choices for both the community of Frome and for those who are visiting the town.”

The incident, on the A371 in Dinder, happened at just after 3pm on Wednesday afternoon (February 18), police said, involving an Audi S3 and a VW Golf.

The Golf left the road after the crash and ended up in a nearby field, an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said.

“Sadly, the driver of the VW Golf, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene,” they added.

“His next of kin has been informed and they are being supported by a specialist family liaison officer. Our thoughts and condolences are with them during this incredibly difficult time.

Massive data centre plan for Bridgwater

AHUGE data centre powering AI and the digital economy could be built in Somerset if plans –set to be submitted in the coming months – are approved.

A ‘scoping opinion’ is being sought from Somerset Council by Lichfields, on behalf of Express Distribution Park, for a 250,000sqm Somerset Data Park development near junction 23 of the M5, near Bridgwater.

The building – described in planning documents as a “hyper-scale data centre” –would serve the growing demand for “facilities that store, and provide access to data and applications via cloud connectivity”, the plans said, and would be powered by 500MW already serving the site.

Though not a full planning application, the request for a scoping opinion is an early step in the process, assessing

potential impacts of the development, on land west of Bath Road, Horsey – and how to deal with them.

“Digital technology is an integral part of day-to-day life, characterised by unprecedented connectivity and information

exchange, and altering how people interact, work, learn and entertain,” the plans said.

“As the utilisation and reach of digital technology has increased, so too has the demand for data centres (i.e. facilities that store, and provide

access to data and applications via cloud connectivity), such that they are now considered to represent essential infrastructure, especially in enabling business operations, supporting research and development (R&D), enhancing national security, data backup, disaster recovery and keeping people connected.”

The documents said the scheme could support Somerset’s “increasingly dynamic economic that is transitioning to a digital economy and attracting businesses in increasingly varied sectors”.

“The proposed development at Somerset Data Park will contribute towards the achievement of these objectives”, the plans added.

Ball raises nearly £10,000 as part of 60th birthday charity fundraising efforts in memory of husband

MORE than 100 people gathered for a charity ball near Taunton.

Rumwell Orchard was the venue for the event, in aid of Cancer Research UK, on Saturday, February 7, with a total of 110 guests glammed up for a night of entertainment for a good cause.

The ball was organised by Ros Wills, in memory of her late husband, Andrew, as part of Ros’ £60k for 60 years birthday fundraising challenge.

Nearly £10,000 was raised on the night, bringing the ongoing total to £45,000.

“The generosity shown by everyone in attendance will help CRUK continue its mission to create a brighter future for all those affected by cancer,” a spokesperson said.

Guests enjoyed a packed programme of festivities, including a raffle draw, golden envelopes, and an auction of promises, alongside a three-course dinner.

The night ended on a high, with the dance floor filled as the Haus Band delivered a lively finale.

“A remarkable evening, driven by community spirit and compassion, it was fundraising at its finest,” the spokesperson added.

More than 100 people turned out for the ball, at Rumwell Orchard, raising almost £10,000

site is revealed

A scoping opinion would help assess environmental and other impacts of the potential development – on a 130 hectare site across the M5 from the Morrisons distribution hub –and address them before full plans are submitted.

“The environmental assessment for each technical aspect will be conducted to consider effects during both the construction and operational periods of development,” the application added.

"Direct, indirect, secondary and cumulative effects will be assessed as appropriate.”

Bodies including the Environment Agency and Natural England have responded to the application, outlining surveys and assessments they would like to see, including on flooding, biodiversity and water resources.

Bridgwater Without Parish Council said it objected to the

plan, citing reasons such as flood risk, ecological impact, the loss of agricultural land, energy and climate, and landscape and visual impact.

Data centres are becoming an issue around the world, as demands on power for IT systems – including AI –continue to grow.

Currently, the UK’s largest data centres are around 90MW, with a 1000MW site planned in Blythe, as well as a Google data centre in Hertfordshire, putting the proposed Somerset facility near the top of the list.

However, it could be some time before the site is operational, with detailed plans expected in the coming months before any decision is considered.

Yeovil man, 25, jailed over child sex offence

YEOVIL man Jason Squibb has been jailed after admitting a sexual offence against a child.

Squibb, of Westfield Road, Yeovil, has been handed a prison sentence of almost three years after pleading guilty to sexual activity with a teenage girl.

The 25-year-old was sentenced at Taunton Crown Court, sitting at North Somerset Courthouse, on January 30, where he was jailed for two years and eight months, as well as being ordered to register as a sex offender, and handed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for five years.

The court heard Squibb used social media platform, Snapchat, to message a teenage girl and groom her with the promise of buying her alcohol.

In October 2021, Squibb intentionally engaged in sexual activity with the victim, who he knew was not over the legal age of 16.

The victim’s mother, speaking after Squibb was jailed, said: “Four years ago, our daughter’s life was changed forever. Since then, she has lived with the profound trauma of the assault committed against her by Jason Squibb.

“However, this sentencing is not about him – it is about the power of finding one’s voice.

“Our daughter was determined to see this legal process through to the end for

one specific reason: she knows she is not alone. Even at her young age, she understands that other girls have endured the same pain and carried the same unnecessary shame. Her message to them is clear: you do not have to live in silence.

“Sometimes, bad things happen to good people, but those moments do not define who you are. You deserve to be heard, and you deserve justice.

“As her mother, I am incredibly proud of the strength she has found. To anyone else who may be a victim: please come forward. Every piece of information and every bit of evidence matters. Our children deserve protection, and your voice can help provide it.

“This journey has rocked our family to its core and it has not been an easy road, but we emerge from this stronger than ever.

“We want to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who worked tirelessly on her case, and to those who supported us leading up to the sentencing.”

Officer in the case, DC Elisabeth Dane from our Internet Child Abuse Team (ICAT), said: “Squibb groomed a child using the purchase and supply of alcohol in exchange for sexual favours.

“The bravery and courage exhibited by the victim, and her family, has led to a dangerous man being put behind bars, no

longer a risk to other girls. We cannot thank her enough for her continued support throughout this investigation and hope she is able to move forward.

“We continue to support the victim in this case and other victims of this form of crime,

we will always listen to you and seek to bring dangerous people such as Squibb before a court to get the justice they deserve.”

Family tribute to cyclist after tragic crash

THE family of cyclist Andrew Carter have paid tribute to a “beloved brother” who passed away after a crash in Highbridge last month.

Andrew, of Burnham-on-Sea, sadly died several weeks after he was involved in a crash involving a red Fiesta car on the A38 Bristol Road at around 2.45pm on Friday, January 2.

The 69-year-old was admitted to hospital two weeks later, where he died on

January 18.

“We are heartbroken about our beloved brother, Andrew Carter.

"As a family, we were incredibly close, and Andrew was dearly loved,” the family said.

“Andrew cycled daily, loved being outdoors, and treasured his walks with his dog - moments that truly brought him joy.

“His absence has left a space that can never be filled, and he will be missed far

more than words can ever express.

“We will carry his memory with us always.”

Last week, a man in his 20s attended a voluntary police interview in connection with police enquiries into the incident.

n Avon & Somerset Police are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to officers, on 101, quoting reference 5226032354.

Frome council's share of tax is going up...

FROME residents will pay an extra 6.8% for the town council share of their council tax bill, it has been decided.

Frome Town Council (FTC) has agreed its budget for the 2026/27 financial year, with members backing plans for the increase in a bid to address residents’ priorities.

The council said rise means 89% of residents will see their council tax bill rise by an average of 32p per week to pay for the town council services, bringing the total cost to around £5 per week.

Leader and chair of FTC, Cllr Fiona Barrows, said: “We know how tough things are for many people right now, and we don’t take any increase lightly.

“We have gone through every single line of this budget with real care, knowing that residents are under real pressure. There

have been detailed discussions about areas of work and every pound we are proposing to spend.

“We have done everything we can to keep our costs down – budgeting carefully, responsibly, and compassionately – with the long-term interests of Frome in

mind.”

She said the council believes it represents “good value for money for the town”, and added: “We keep our investment local, and we use it to support the people, places and opportunities that make Frome what it is.

“This budget is about

maintaining what works, stepping up where it’s needed, and continuing to invest in our community in a way that is practical, responsible and rooted in the priorities our residents have helped shape.”

Part of the reason for the increase is that FTC – as with other town and parish councils in Somerset – has stepped in to take on services previously supplied by the overarching Somerset Council, which is in the midst of a financial emergency.

In recent years, this has seen FTC adopt 57 new open spaces, take on the Key Centre and Badgers Hill, improve cleaning and maintenance in the town centre and support community organisations.

'I asked if my baby and I would survive...'

“I ASKED if my baby and I would survive. Expecting a definite ‘Yes’, the doctor said seriously, ‘We’ll do our best’.”

Those were the harrowing words of folk star Issy Ferris –one half of Frome duo Ferris & Sylvester alongside nowhusband Archie Sylvester – who has spoken of her experience of life-threatening pregnancy complications which led to the premature birth of their first son, Lucky.

The award-winning folk/blue duo, known for standout tracks including Flying Visit and Better In Yellow, were enjoying the upward trajectory of their career – and their lives – in September 2022.

Fresh from an appearance on the Avalon Stage and at Strummerville at Glastonbury – where they announced they were expecting – they had travelled to the US for shows when things went wrong.

“I was 32-weeks pregnant, eight weeks until my due date, when we flew to Nashville in September 2022,” Issy said. “We’d been touring our debut album all summer, we announced my pregnancy on The Avalon Stage at Glastonbury. I had a happy and healthy dream of a pregnancy.

“We flew to Nashville for a four-day trip to play our last shows of the summer.

“On day three of the trip, Archie and I went to the emergency room after a night of heavy vomiting. I was quickly diagnosed with severe preeclampsia and was told to

very soon and on American soil.”

As the shock of the situation set in, Issy asked for reassurance about her condition – and that of her baby.

"I asked if my baby and I would survive,” she said.

“Expecting a definite ‘Yes’, the doctor said seriously, ‘We’ll do our best’.

“My body had gone into organ failure. Archie made the calls to our family. Shows were cancelled. Life had changed.”

Issy was stabilised with a magnesium drip and transferred to Ascension Saint Thomas Midtown, in Nashville, where “they have an amazing Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)”, she said.

“We waited to see if my condition would improve. After a couple of days, it was clear my situation wasn’t stabilising. We were told our baby would be delivered the following morning.”

Lucky Ferris Sylvester was born on September 19,

“We flew home with Lucky weighing 6lbs on an emergency passport. Our four-day trip ended up being two months.

“We had our baby, and we were home. Life could resume.”

However, the new family had to endure another trauma on their return – a $200,000 bill for their care in the US, which their insurance company initially refused to pay, before u-turning on the decision.

But now, more than three years later, the pair – who have since welcomed daughter, Dusty – have spoken of their experience in the way they know best, through song.

weighing just over 4lbs. He spent 19 days in the NICU, learning to breathe and feed on his own.

“He was the most tiny and perfect little baby,” Issy said. “We were apart after the birth. I missed the first day of his life.

“Recovery was hard, I had little strength in those first few days. But whenever I could, Archie would wheel me down to the NICU to see Lucky.

“You’d think an intensive care unit would have been a very hard place to be. But for us, it was where we had some of the best moments of our lives, thanks to the unimaginable kindness from the nurses and doctors.

“It’s where we got to know our son.”

The ordeal brought the pair closer together, and they were married 10 days after Lucky was born.

“The hospital chaplain, Chelsea, performed the service in Centennial Park,” Issy went on. “We had our families there and we visited Lucky in the NICU in our glad-rags.

“Our wedding breakfast was fried chicken. It was the most perfect day.

“When Lucky and I came out of hospital, we spent another four weeks out in Nashville, living in a studio above a garage just off 12th South.

Songs That Saw Us Through is a five-track EP of covers, featuring tunes the pair listened to during their experience.

And they are working to raise awareness of pregnancy research charity, Tommy’s, which supports to help families “bring their babies home”.

Issy added: “Over three years on, I sit here in full health, with Lucky and his baby sister, Dusty.

“We have toured, released an album and recorded another. It worked out for us and we are so grateful. Trauma of any kind is complex, however. It quietly grows its roots until suddenly, you can hardly move, even years after the danger has passed. We navigate this everyday.

“For this reason, we are especially proud to be working with Tommy’s to provide much-needed support for families who are going through something similar, along with the groundbreaking research that they carry out.

“We hope the new music can help and comfort you, whatever journey you are on.

“Music can save people. We are sending you love and strength.”

Carnival concerts are on the move for 2026!

THE Bridgwater Carnival Concerts are on the move for 2026.

Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival organisers have confirmed the popular shows will take place from Sunday, October 4, to Thursday, October 15, at The McMillan Theatre.

The move comes as Bridgwater Town Hall – the traditional home of the carnival concerts – undergoes major refurbishment.

A spokesperson for Bridgwater Town Council, which runs the town hall, said: “The Bridgwater Carnival Concerts are an important part of the town’s cultural calendar, bringing our community together and showcasing the incredible talent and spirit of Bridgwater.

“While it is disappointing not to host the concerts in the town hall in 2026, we fully recognise how much this long-standing

event means to residents, performers and visitors alike.”

The council said it was looking forward to the shows returning to the town hall in 2027, when the upgraded venue would be offered for free.

Jason Gunningham, principal at Bridgwater College, said the McMillan Theatre was proud to welcome “a special and important part of the community that celebrates music, creativity and community spirit”.

Performance times for the 2026 Bridgwater Carnival Concerts at the McMillan Theatre:

Crafting the Perfect Wedding

As couples embark on the journey of a lifetime, each element of

the wedding becomes a brushstroke, painting the canvas of their special day. From the choice of venue to the intricate details of attire, every decision contributes to the creation of unforgettable memories.

The Venue - Selecting the perfect venue sets the stage for the entire celebration. Whether it’s a romantic beachside affair, a rustic countryside charm, or a luxurious ballroom extravaganza, the venue becomes the backdrop that frames the couple’s love story.

Attire - The attire transforms the bride and groom into the protagonists of their fairy tale. From the stunning wedding gown that leaves guests breathless to the dapper suits that redefine sophistication, every stitch and detail speaks volumes about the couple’s style and commitment.

Flowers - The choice of flowers can transform a venue into a fragrant garden of love. From bouquets to centrepieces, each floral arrangement is a brushstroke of colour, adding romance and grace to the atmosphere.

Hair - Hairstyles are not just a detail; they are an expression of personality. Intricate updos, flowing curls, or sleek, modern styles – each coiffure reflects the bride’s unique charm and complements the overall theme of the celebration.

Rings - Exchanging rings is a timeless tradition, and the chosen bands become enduring symbols of the couple’s commitment. Whether it’s classic simplicity or intricate designs, the rings encapsulate the essence of their everlasting love.

Photography - Photography is the art of freezing time. A skilled photographer captures candid moments, creating a visual narrative that will be cherished for generations. Flowers The choice of flowers can transform a venue into a fragrant garden of love. From bouquets to centrepieces, each floral arrangement is a brushstroke of colour, adding romance and grace to the atmosphere.

In the grand tapestry of a wedding, each element weaves together to create a celebration that is uniquely the couple’s own. It’s not just an event; it’s a testament to the enduring power of love, a promise to cherish and celebrate the symphony that is their life together.

Yeovil pub re-opens after £376k makeover

LANDMARK Yeovil pub

– The Arrow – has re-opened after a £376,000 refurbishment.

The Marston’s pub has been fitted out as a Grandstand venue, offering improved facilities for sport watchers, as well as a darts area and pool table.

It closed on January 26 for work to begin, with doors opening on Wednesday (February 18).

Among those turning out for a taste of the facilities on opening day was Mayor of Yeovil, Tony Lock, and MP Adam Dance (Lib Dem, Yeovil).

The mayor praised the “new fixtures, fittings and furniture, plenty of televisions for the sports fans among you, as well as an extensive menu for all the family and plenty of outdoor seating for the better weather and a welcome games area”.

And a spokesperson for The Arrow outlined what was on offer to visitors at the new-look venue.

“We’ve been busy refreshing, upgrading, and reimagining your local grandstand sports bar - and we can’t wait for you to see the amazing changes for

yourself. From updated spaces to a fresh new feel, we’ve worked hard to make it bigger, better, and ready to welcome you back.

“Now it’s time to open our doors and show you what we’ve been up to. Pop in over the next few days, bring your friends and family, and come and experience the new look and atmosphere.

“We’re so proud of what’s been achieved and it wouldn’t be the same without our fantastic community.”

Blood pressure checks while shopping!

PEOPLE in Somerset are being urged to take up a free blood pressure test while doing their shopping.

Supermarket giant Tesco has partnered with the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to encourage people to take a moment for their wellbeingat county stores.

Tesco pharmacies at Burnham-on-Sea, Clevedon, Minehead, Wells and Westonsuper-Mare, as well as in the Extra store at Yeovil, are offering free blood pressure checks for those browsing the aisles.

It comes as the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities estimated around 74,000 people in Somerset are living with undiagnosed high blood pressure, a leading risk factors for heart attacks and strokes.

However, because high blood pressure often has no signs or symptoms, the only way to know is to get tested.

Tom Lye, category director for health & wellness at Tesco, said: "We want looking after your health to feel as simple as going into Tesco to do a shop. Our pharmacy teams are here to offer a quick, friendly blood pressure check – no fuss, no appointment needed.

"A few minutes in store can help to give peace of mind or get you support early if it’s needed."

Tesco pharmacy teams in Somerset offer a free walk-in and pre-booked 10-minute blood pressure check, carried out in private consultation rooms.

Live-in Care

They will explain the results clearly and, if a raised reading is detected, guide customers towards the appropriate next steps or support.

All Tesco pharmacists and pharmacy staff undergo specialist Let’s Talk training to help them speak to the public with sensitivity about heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes.

The latest campaign, launched during Heart Month, builds on the partnership between Tesco and the BHF, encouraging the public to fit a blood pressure check into their everyday routine.

As well as the free in store checks, Tesco Magazine and the Tesco Real Food website are featuring heart healthy recipes including dishes with low salt and low saturated fat to help customers cook confidently at home.

The wider Tesco Health Charity Partnership with the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and

Diabetes UK was launched in 2018 and is built on the simple belief that Every Little Help can make a big difference.

Until March 1, customers can also choose to round up their shop to the nearest £1, to raise money for the Health Charity Partnership.

Professor Bryan Williams OBE, chief scientific and medical officer at the BHF, added: "High blood pressure affects roughly one in three adults, yet many people remain unaware they have it because it usually presents no obvious signs.

"When it goes undetected, it can significantly raise the risk of heart attacks and strokes, which is why it’s so important for as many people as possible to get their blood pressure checked.

"Although high blood pressure can lead to serious health problems if ignored, the positive news is that it can be managed. Small lifestyle changes like being more active and reducing foods high in fat, salt and sugar can have a real impact - medication is also available when needed.

"Getting your blood pressure checked at a community location like your local Tesco is quick, straightforward and could be one of the most vital steps you take to protect your heart and overall health. Know your numbers this Heart Month."

MP praises charity's work with youngsters

ASOMERSET MP has praised the work of a county charity helping young people gain confidence and skills as they look to move into work.

Sir Ashley Fox (Con, Bridgwater) recently visited Bold & Brave, in Angel Place, Bridgwater, which is run by Young Somerset.

The visit offered an important opportunity for Ashley Fox to understand the wide-ranging support the charity provides for children and young people across the county.

From handmade products to barista training, interns develop real-world skills, receive mentoring and benefit from a supportive environment that builds both personal confidence and employability.

During the visit, Young Somerset staff also highlighted some of the key challenges facing local young people, including pressures on mental health, limited opportunities in some communities and barriers to accessing timely support.

Discussions focused on how partnership working across sectors can help build safer, stronger communities where young people are able to thrive.

Somerset's role in promoting the Dyersand caravan holidays!

SOMERSET is famous for its holiday homes – with millions descending on county sites over the years for a break by the sea, or in the beautiful countryside.

And one holiday home distributor has taken their expertise global – helping launch a new Danny Dyerfronted series with Sky TV, Southern Counties Leisure, in Burnham-on-Sea, teamed up with manufacturer Willerby to help promote The Dyers’ Caravan Park, a new Sky series following actor Danny and daughter Dani as they invest in a caravan park on the Isle of Sheppey.

The companies were part of a

high-profile publicity event in central London, providing a luxury Willerby holiday home as the venue for media interviews in support of the show, which launched on February 24 on Sky and NOW TV.

The Sky original series former EastEnders star Danny and his daughter, who shot to fame after reality TV appearances and as an influencer, try their hand at investing in and running a holiday park.

“With nostalgia in their hearts and business ambition in their sights, the father-daughter duo dive headfirst into the £7 billion holiday park industry,

with the goal of renovating Priory Hill and Nutts Farm Holiday Park at Leysdown on the Isle of Sheppey, in Kent, aiming to create a place that lives up to Danny’s misty-eyed memories of his favourite childhood holidays,” a spokesperson said.

Burnham’s Southern Counties Leisure provided a Willerby Gainsborough model for the media preview day, housing the Dyers for interviews and filming in Hyde park.

Southern Counties Leisure managing director, Amanda Keen, said: “We’re delighted to be part of the opportunity to promote this new TV series, which celebrates great British

holidays and showcases the true quality that holiday homes offer and the enjoyment they bring to all the family.”

Willerby CEO, Peter Munk, said: “Everyone at Willerby is excited about The Dyers’ Caravan Park, as the series will play an important part in promoting caravan holidays, especially to younger audiences.

“It’s particularly timely to be part of such a great opportunity in 2026, during the year in which Willerby celebrates its 80th anniversary and Southern Counties Leisure marks its 30th.”

Sudden road closures warning as county continues to battle changeable weather

THE A361 between Burrowbridge and East Lyng – which re-opened after three weeks of being closed to flooding - was shut again just a day later, but is now open to traffic.

Somerset Council re-opened the route on Thursday (February 19) as water levels dropped, but closed it again after a rise overnight in the spillway next to the road which they said caused new flooding.

After opening the road again on Monday (February 23), the authority warned sudden closures could be a feature in the coming weeks amid changeable weather conditions.

“Unfortunately, due to persistent wet weather, this will continue to be a feature over the coming weeks,” a spokesperson said.

“We recognise the importance of the road to communities and road users which is why on balance we will always try to keep it open

even if there is a chance it will have to close again in a short amount of time.

“Water levels will continue to fluctuate and we will continue to work with our partners to balance public safety with the need to open the road when safe and possible.

“We hope to reopen the road as soon as possible.”

Somerset Council lead member for transport and waste services, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said: “We recognise the importance of the road to communities and road users

which is why on balance we will always try to keep it open even if there is a chance it will have to close again in a short amount of time. During a wet winter like this, we do expect to have to close the road from time to time to keep people safe which is why we have an emergency road closure gate at

this location. We ask people to please respect the closure when it is in place, for your own safety. Water levels will continue to fluctuate over the coming weeks until we have a sustained period of dry weather and we have to balance public safety with the need to open the road when safe and possible."

Beat cold: Start salad crops in late winter...

IN February every warm day is a sign that winter really is losing its grip, and that it’s time to look to milder days ahead. A small greenhouse or a spare windowsill is a good place to sow a few lettuces thinly in a seed tray.

Lettuces are notoriously difficult to germinate later in summer when hotter days mean the seed becomes ‘heatdormant’. That is, lettuces are reluctant to germinate in high temperatures. Providing it is not too frosty, the seed should come up like the proverbial mustard and cress.

Tip the tray of seedlings out onto the work-bench and separate each using the seed leaves to gently pull them apart. Seed-leaves, cotyledons, are disposable for the plant so if one gets torn it will not matter too much. Plant each seedling in a small 9cm pot of potting compost and water it in well. Ensure you have a selection of different sizes to stagger their maturity. And replace the pots back into a frost-free environment. They will make fat little lettuces in a few weeks. And once they are growing away, use the cooler sunshine to sow another tray to succeed it. There are very many lettuce

Deadline to place your advert for the March 4th edition is 1pm Friday, Feb 27th.

varieties to choose from – round butterheads with soft leaves, crisp cos-style heads, or ‘cut and come again’ varieties, in tempting shades of red and green.

As the year moves on and becomes hotter, it would help germination if the remaining seed was kept in its envelopes in a sealed plastic box in the fridge to maintain a steady temperature and humidity.

By mid-summer when lettuce germination becomes markedly more difficult, consider an alternative leafy salad such as arugula with its peppery taste, baby spinach leaves, again with a different taste, or the bitter

endives or Asian pak choy, which could also be used in stir-fries. By mid-summer any of these could be sown directly into the ground outside. But they will all need protection

from slugs and snails, and rabbits.

Slug pubs work on lots of other pests too and are an easy way to protect salads from their attentions.

Railings plan at iconic Somerset tower to cut the risk of visitors falling Property

RAILINGS could soon be installed atop a landmark Somerset tower "for visitor protection".

The National Trust has applied to Somerset Council for permission to install horizontal railings to masonry on the top of the listed Alfred's Tower, at Brewham, near Bruton.

Plans said the railings would be added to the "masonry on the top platform of the tower".

"The openings are quite low," it said. "This can encourage

visitors to lean over the cills, increasing the risk of falling."

Visitors to the folly, which dates from 1766, can walk around the top of the tower, thanks to a visitor platform, with railings already in place in the centre of the area to protect people from falls.

"The proposed design provides a greater level of protection for users of the tower," the application went on.

"Positioning the new bars on the inner edge of the wall

prevents visitors leaning on the cills and reduces the chance of children climbing the cills.

"This positioning on the inner edge also reduces the visibility of the bars from below. Any visibility from ground level would be from at least 65 metres from the base of the tower, at which distance the bars would appear very small.

"There would be a visual impact from the viewing platform but is not considered a significant aesthetic difference

due to similarity to the existing railings.

"The bars are proposed to be grey, matching the colour of the railings already in place on the inner shaft.

"The installation approach with minimal fixings allows for the installation to be reversible with minimal repairs."

Final property at Yeovil development - out of more than 650 - up for grabs

JUST one home remains for sale at a Yeovil development of more than 650 properties.

Persimmon Homes’ Augusta Park development, on the outskirts of the Somerset town, has one four-bedroom home for sale with an asking price of £415,000.

Augusta Park has grown in recent years, including the development of not only homes, but a new primary school, two children’s play areas, a community centre and a selection of small shops.

Persimmon Homes South West sales director, Stacey Harris, said: “With just one home remaining at this phase of Augusta Park, we’re excited to offer this

final opportunity to own a high-quality home built by a five-star builder at this development, where families will benefit from a living in a town set in one of Britain’s most beautiful counties.

“This long-term development is finally coming to an end, and residents can benefit from a whole host of amenities that are inherent to Yeovil but have also been brought to the area by Persimmon as part of Augusta Park.
