THE first customers at Wincanton’s new cinema have been enjoying big movies on the big-screen in the town for the first time in decades.
Movie fans Ashley and her son Archie were the first customers through the door at the South Street cinema, which opened two screens on Friday (February 13), taking in Zootropolis 2.
The project has seen the former cinema-turned-church building converted by S&B Cinemas, which also runs venues in Frome, Burnham-on-Sea and Minehead.
Owner, Pat Scott, said he was thrilled with the new venue, and that thinking about the achievement “brings tears to the eye”.
Speaking ahead of the
opening, MP Sarah Dyke (Lib Dem, Glastonbury & Somerton), said: Pat, Beryl, John, Phil (and Julie) are the team who’ve brought cinema into the heart of Frome, Burnham-on-Sea and Minehead; now, they have transformed a former church on South Street into a three-screen cinema.
“With affordable ticket pricing, an accessibility lift, and a full array of refreshments on offer, the customer experience is at the heart of this fantastic new venue.
“I stopped by a couple of weeks ago to see the building works, test out the comfy new chairs, and thank the team for bringing arts and culture closer to home for so many residents of rural Somerset.”

BREAN Theme Park - which was feared closed for good after the company running it entered liquidation - WILL open to visitors for the 2026 summer season.
General manager of the attraction, Peter Mainwaring, has confirmed the move after changes to the "group structure".
"We are working hard behind the scenes and will re-open for the 2026 summer season from Easter," he said.
"Although the group structure has changed, our loyal visitors will still enjoy
the same park, the same team, and the same great day out.
"For clarity, Brean Theme Park is not owned by Unity Holidays. We operate as a fullyindependent business and lease land from them.

"We look forward to continuing to work together.
"Preparations are underway and we
can't wait to welcome you back very soon."
The company that runs Brean leisure Park gave notice of liquidation on January 28, sparking fears the attraction might not re-open. Nicholas Stafford, of Hazlewoods LLP, has been appointed as liquidator.
The park boasts rides such as NASA Rockets, the Bulldog Coaster, Terror Castle and Spinning Barrels.
Emma Hardy (Lab, Kingston upon Hull West and Haltemprice) was in Somerset last week (February 10) to see the impact of recent heavy rain on the county.
She was hosted by MP Sarah Dyke (Lib Dem, Glastonbury & Somerton), after repeated calls for a visit so the minister could see the devastating impact of recent flooding for herself.
Ms Dyke, the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for rural affairs, said the visit was “vital for the Government to understand the situation on the ground”, with the pair taking in flood hotspots in Langport and in Muchelney.
“After my repeated requests in Parliament, the Minister’s visit today is appreciated and a step in the right direction,” Ms Dyke said.
“It was crucial for me to show her the devastation flooding is causing people in Somerset, and the stark reality for communities as they face unprecedented weather events with increasing frequency.
“These extreme downpours are our new reality, yet the Government still believes our flood defences can be run on a shoestring budget.
“We urgently need investment into Somerset to ensure the availability of critical assets where they are needed in emergencies to mitigate flooding.”
She said investment was needed in flood prevention, as well making Somerset prepared for heavy rains – and the resultant flooding – amid falling budgets.
“With national flooding budgets being cut in real terms it’s critical the Government invests in cost-effective strategies such as flood preparedness, prevention and nature-based solutions, so communities aren’t left to fend

for themselves,” she went on.
“In addition, the decision to withdraw main river maintenance funding is shortsighted and reckless. It will worsen the risk of flooding, leaves the burden of managing our rivers to individual riparian owners, and taxpayers will be left to pick up the bill for ever-increasing costs of flood damage.
“Liberal Democrats are calling for an urgent review of the decision to abandon main river maintenance. Communities across Somerset cannot afford the withdrawal of this fundingthe devastating effects of which will be evident in coming years. You cannot protect the South West, or Somerset on the cheap, and this cannot go on.”
During her visit, the Minister took a tractor ride with Muchelney farmer Michael Curtis, taking in land entirely submerged in flood water.
The Minister also visited the River Parrett in Langport to view the pumping station and to further flood works, before meeting with the Internal Drainage Board.
Ms Hardy said the Government had invested £75m in Somerset and would continue
building flood defences –including the Bridgwater Tidal Barrier.
“I’ve heard from communities here in Somerset who have been deeply affected by the impacts the recent heavy rainfall, and I know how devastating flooding can be,” she said.
“Environment Agency

officers have been working around the clock across the country, but especially in Somerset, and I thank them for their efforts during this testing time.
“In Somerset, we have already invested £75 million and are continuing to boost flood defences in the area –including building the Bridgwater Tidal Barrier to protect 12,800 homes and businesses.”
Julie Foley, director of flood risk strategy at the Environment Agency, added: “We are continuing to see significant rainfall in the southwest and other parts of the UK, and so our teams are taking every step they can to protect people, homes and businesses.
“We are operating emergency pumps and flood storage areas to minimise the risk of further flooding, and many thousands of homes and businesses have been protected. But this is little comfort to the those who have been flooded, and we will continue to do all we can to help communities affected.
“It’s crucial that the public heed warnings from local responders, sign up for flood warnings and make sure they do not to drive through flood water.”
The Government said it had inherited flood defences “in their worst condition on record”, and had immediately invested £100m for “essential maintenance”.
Work is already underway on the Bridgwater Tidal Barrier, which aims to protect more than 12,500 homes from flooding, and the facility is expected to be online in the next five years.

COMMUTERS can now park for free and take an electric bus into the centre of town thanks to a new service in Taunton.
The county’s first park and bus facility opened at the Orchard Grove development, in Comeytrowe, on February 11with buses running in to the centre of Taunton.
Commuters using the service can park for free at the 200-space car park at Orchard Grove, which has already been used by residents, but is now open to the public.
Services on offer are the commercially operated 22, 22A and X22 routes, operating to and from Wellington and Taunton, with normal fares
applying.
Somerset Council said the service would complement Taunton’s two park-and-ride services, from Silk Mills and Taunton Gateway.
Councillor Richard Wilkins, lead member for transport and waste, said: “People can park up and jump on a scheduled bus that will take them into the centre of our county town.
“This service is convenient, avoids the need to find a town centre parking space and helps reduce our carbon footprint. We want to make bus travel more attractive and a real alternative to the private car.
“I am grateful to our Orchard Grove Consortium partners for their support in turning an
ambition into reality.”
Peter Sadler, managing director of Vistry Southwest, part of the Orchard Grove Consortium, added: “We’re delighted that the park and bus facility we developed is now opening at Orchard Grove. This represents a significant milestone and demonstrates our commitment to creating a modern, sustainable community with excellent transport connections.
“The facility will benefit not only our growing number of residents but also the wider area, providing convenient access to public transport. We’re proud to have worked alongside Somerset Council to deliver this innovative transport solution.”
COLIN Thorne has been charged with the attempted murder of a woman in Yeovil.
A woman, in her 50s, called police early on February 8, reporting she had suffered neck injuries at a property in the West Hendford area.
She was taken to hospital but discharged later the same day, police said, with Thorne, 32, arrested within three hours of the incident.
Thorne, of Kiddles, Yeovil, has now been charged with attempted murder. He appeared before magistrates in Yeovil on February 9 and is
next set to appear at Taunton Crown Court on March 9.
Avon & Somerset Police neighbourhood chief inspector, Andrew Pritchard, said: “We wish the woman a speedy recovery. Officers responded promptly, making an arrest within three hours.
“You may have seen an increased police presence in Kiddles in recent days as we carried out searches and examinations at an address.
“That work has now concluded, and there is no evidence of any wider risk to the public.”
CCTV appeal after restaurant damage

POLICE are keen to trace this person after the window of a Taunton restaurant and takeaway was damaged.
Officers are investigating after damage at the premises in Staplegrove Road at around 6.45pm on Friday, January 30.
“There were several people in the restaurant at the time of the incident, and we have lines of enquiry to follow, have spoken to witnesses and CCTV enquiries have been carried out,” an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said.
“We are now appealing to the public to help us identify the man in this CCTV image who we believe may have information which could assist our enquiries. The man in the image is described as a white man, with a bald head, who is wearing a black top.”
Anyone who recognises the person pictured, or has further information, should contact police on 101, quoting reference 5226027799.

FOUR Somerset schools have received praise from Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, for their efforts to support disadvantaged children.
The schools, in the Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust (BWMAT), were cited in a letter from the secretary of state for results which ranked them among the best in the UK.
Holy Trinity in Yeovil, St Andrew’s Church School in Bath, as well as St Georges Church School and St Mark’s Primary School, both in Weston-super-Mare, were congratulated in the letter for “significant achievement”.
The secretary of state also encouraged the schools to continue sharing their effective practice through the government’s new Regional Improvement for Standards and Excellence (RISE) programme.
Nikki Edwards, chief executive officer of BWMAT, said: "We are delighted to offer our sincere congratulations to Holy Trinity, St Andrew’s Bath, St Georges and St Mark’s on the exceptional outcomes their disadvantaged pupils achieved at the end of the 2024–25 academic year.
"To have their success recognised nationally by the secretary of state is an outstanding accomplishment, and one that reflects the remarkable work taking place across these school communities.
"This achievement reflects

the unwavering commitment of staff and the resilience and ambition of the children themselves. We are incredibly proud of the high-quality provision and strong leadership in these schools, and of their relentless focus on inclusion, equity and excellence."
Sarah Starr, headteacher at St Georges Church School, said:
"We are honoured to be recognised for our work supporting children who face disadvantage. Inclusion sits at the heart of everything we do at St George’s, and we are proud to help every child and family thrive and believe that all things are possible."
Adam Beauford, headteacher at Holy Trinity, added: "At Holy Trinity, we aspire for all to achieve. We strive to uplift every child by tailoring support
to their academic and emotional needs.

TREVOR Nex has been banned from driving after being found with an open bottle of port while behind the wheel of a 4×4 in West Somerset.
Nex, of Baytree Farm, Watchfield, Highbridge, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle while above the alcohol limit, driving while disqualified, and for using a vehicle on a road without third party insurance at an earlier hearing at Taunton Magistrates’ Court, where he was sentenced on January 28.
The 43-year-old was handed a 63-month driving ban, alongside 100 hours of unpaid work, and a rehabilitation activity requirement. He was also ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £114 victim surcharge.

Nex was arrested at Hellings Cross, in Bathelton, West Somerset, on November 29 last year after police received reports of a suspected drink driver.
When officers arrived, they noticed a 4×4 vehicle park up and saw Nex get out of the driver seat and begin to walk off.
Officers caught up with him while he was on a mobile phone and smoking a cigarette, and he

was asked to return to the vehicle, which he said wasn’t his.
The officer told Nex he saw him in the driving seat and added: “We have had reports that this vehicle has been drink driving (sic). You have just got out of the vehicle, there is a bottle in there and I can smell alcohol on you, so at this time I’m detaining you.”
Officers walked Nex back to his vehicle, took the keys, and arrested him.
Nex admitted at the scene he didn’t have a driving licence due to a previous ban, and when asked how much he had to drink told officers he had drank “a couple of ports”.
He pleaded guilty to the offences at court on October 22, when he was given an interim
driving disqualification ahead of his sentence.
After the sentencing, Inspector Matt Boiles, of the roads policing team, said: “This is an appalling case involving a man who was driving a large 4X4 under the influence of alcohol with an open bottle of port inside the cab of his vehicle, while he was disqualified.
“Whether you’re in a rural area or a city centre, drink driving can never be justified, and this sentence means Nex can no longer put himself or others at risk of serious injury, or worse, through his utterly selfish actions.
“We’re committed to tackling drink drivers all-year-round so if you know someone who regularly drinks or takes drugs and drives, please don’t stay silent. Your report could stop a dangerous driver before they hurt or kill someone.”

THE former WH Smith shop in Bridgwater could become a 24-hour adult gaming centre, if plans are approved.
Gaming centre operator East Kent Leasing Limited, owned by the Godden family, has taken the lease of 14-15 Cornhill and applied for permission to change the use of the premises for a 24-hour Palace Amusements.

A licence has been secured, the application said, with "no concerns raised by Somerset Council or Avon & Somerset Police during the licensing application process".
However, Bridgwater Town Council's Planning Committee opposed the proposal, claiming it had "not been adequately marketed for retail use", and "questioned the suitability of a gaming centre in an area already known for anti-social behaviour" and "expressed frustration that Avon & Somerset Police had not been consulted".
The town council response to the application said: "Objection due to concerns over a potential rise in anti-social behaviour, it would be useful to see comments made from the police, and beneficial to see the property on the market for longer to seek alternative occupiers."
But as part of the planning application to change the use of the site, the applicant said the firm runs gaming sites across the UK without issue.
And a letter from Duncan Brown, a partner at marketing agent for the site Greenslade Taylor Hunt (GTH), included in the application said there had been no retail interest in the property.
"All in all, the building has been vacant for over 18 months, since shortly after WH Smith served notice on March 25, 2024," it said. "After an
extensive marketing campaign during which the only viable interest was received from gambling operators, and no offers from any parties wishing to use it for retail purposes, we exchanged contracts with Godden Gaming," it added.
"The property has received full exposure to the market over this extended period."
A security, crime prevention and social responsibility statement is also included in the planning application, which says Godden Gaming organisation venues are "designed to reduce crime occurring" within the premises or directly outside.
"Most of our venues are in prominent town/city centre locations and appeal to a wide demographic of clientele, ranging from young professionals through to a more elderly, often-retired customer base by providing a modern high street environment and an alternative to ageing casinos and bookmakers," it said.
More than 60% of the firm's customers are "aged 40+2, it went on, with 50% of the customer base being female.
"It is therefore not only our responsibility to ensure our premises offer a safe environment for our customers, but business-critical for the organisation," the statement added.
The plans will now be considered by Somerset Council. For more details, and to comment on the scheme, log on to somerset.gov.uk and search application reference 08/25/00215.

FLAGS are flying at half mast in Wells after the sudden passing of veteran representative and former mayor, Tony Robbins.
Wells City Council and Somerset Council member Tony has passed away “unexpectedly”, with tributes being paid by a range of authorities and members.
First elected to Wells City Council in 2007, Cllr Robbins held a number of roles, including serving as Mayor of Wells in 2010/11 and most recently as chair of the council’s Finance Committee.
"Tony was a well known, and highly-regarded figure within the city, as well as a colleague and friend to many and his loss is felt deeply," a city council spokesperson said.
Flags at the Town Hall are flying at half mast today (February 9), the authority said,

and will remain such until the day of Tony’s funeral, which has yet to be confirmed.
"Our thoughts are with Tony’s family and friends at this difficult time," the spokesperson added.
The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Wells, Cllr Louis Agabani, said: "I know I speak for all councillors and staff of

Tributes have been paid to former Wells mayor, Cllr Robbins

the city council in saying that the loss of Tony is significant, and felt deeply.
"Tony has served the community of Wells in so many ways, and the loss of his knowledge, expertise and willingness will be significantly felt.
"We all send our sincere condolences to his wide Sylvia
and daughter Georgie."
Chief executive of Somerset Council, Duncan Sharkey, said Cllr Robbins would be remembered for his "warmth, humour, and his humanity", and the thoughts of all at the council were with his family and friends.
Leader of Somerset Council, Cllr Bill Revans, added: "I was so sad to hear the sudden news of Cllr Tony Robbins’ passing at the weekend.
"Tony was a decent man and a much-valued colleague who brought his expertise and local knowledge to licensing, planning and scrutiny committees, as well as being a conscientious divisional colleague.
"He will be hugely missed by all of us at Somerset Council and we send condolences to his wife Sylvia and daughter Georgie."

FEARS council tax in Somerset could rise by up to 11% have been curtailed after the county was not among authorities permitted to increase rates above 4.99%.
It is understood Somerset Council asked the government for permission to increase the tax by more than the 4.99% allowed by law without requiring a referendum.
However, last week the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) announced a list of authorities given the leeway - including neighbouring North Somerset Council - with Somerset not included.
It means Somerset households are now likely to see an increase of the maximum allowed without a county-wide poll - 4.99%.
Last year, Somerset was granted permission for a 7.5% increase - at the time billed as a 'one-off' amid exceptional financial hardship.
However, the burden has not lessened, with the council again reported to have returned to the government to ask for an even bigger increase for 2026/27 - which has been turned down.
Responding to the news, the council said it has made savings of at least £50 million since becoming a unitary authority in 2023, but that the financial situation "remains fragile", with a budget gap of around £33m for 2026/27 due to "ongoing exceptional cost pressures in areas like social care, children’s services and homelessness".
The council said its position was "made worse by Government’s decision not to financially recognise authorities which have a large geographical base to cover and whose population is rural", with Somerset among the 10 mostrural areas in the country.
Council tax levels also remain lower than the national average for similar authorities, they said, though statistics show

workers in the county also earn below the national average.
But council tax is not the only means of financial support the council can seek, with Somerset Council leader, Cllr Bill Revans (Lib Dem, North Petherton), again in discussions with the MHCLG over possible Exceptional Financial Support - including a possible Capitalisation Direction, which allows councils to use borrowing or asset sales to fund day-to-day operations, like providing public services.
As with exceptional council tax increases, a Capitalisation Direction is intended as a one-off, yet Somerset Council is seeking the dispensation for a third consecutive year, having been granted one for 2025/26, with around £43m of such spending in the last budget, and more than £36m in 2024/25.
Cllr Revans said the council would now consider the implications of the government's council tax increase decision, which are "likely to require further damaging cuts to services and long-term changes".
"Clearly no-one wants to increase council tax, but this announcement means Somerset will remain at a disadvantage due to historic decisions and we will continue to have less funding to deliver important services for our residents," he said. "We will face further difficult and heartbreaking
choices about council services and charges."
Getting more technical on how government funding is allocated, he said: "Government uses a notional Band D Council Tax figure of £2,060 to calculate funding entitlements for councils. We will remain below this level by more than £100.
"Government have shifted responsibilities to councils, but without giving us the ability to raise income to the levels needed, and without taking into account historic decision making by predecessor authorities.
"I have repeatedly said that council tax is not a fair way to pay for services like social care. This is not just my view – it was echoed by the cross-party Select Committee last year which called for urgent reform of a ‘broken’ system. Our residents continue to pay more and receive less.
"We received some good news on Special Educational Needs and Disabilities budgets with the Government committing to paying off 90% of historic deficits. We’ll need to see the detail and will continue to lobby for comprehensive reform of the SEND system.
"This week’s announcement on council tax gives us clarity and we will need to consider the implications carefully before we finalise our budget proposals for debate and decision at Full
Council later this month."
The figure of £2,060 is important, because the 11% council tax increase reportedly requested by Somerset Council would have seen the average Band D charge rise by arund £200 to - yep, you guessed it, £2,060 - and could have led to more money coming in from the government.
Whatever the implications, however, the refusal of the increase was welcomed by the opposition Somerset Conservatives, who submitted a letter signed by some 3,600 residents opposing the increase.
Cllr Diogo Rodrigues, leader of the Somerset Council Conservatives, said: "Over 3,600 Somerset residents signed our letter, firing a clear warning shot at the Liberal Democrat administration, get your own house in order and stop wasting money before asking people to pay more.
"Those voices were backed by Ashley Fox MP, who stood with residents and was the only MP to publicly support this campaign. Together, that pressure has made a difference."
Cllr Rodrigues said in 2025/26, residents were told the 7.5% increase was exceptional - and that many could not afford an even larger rise in council tax this time around.
"When you combine that with the pressure placed on city, town and parish councils to take on services Somerset Council
no longer provides, the impact on households is obvious," he said. "For many families, this was looking unaffordable."
The Conservatives pointed to what it called "wasteful spending" by the Liberal Democrat administration, including £33m spent on agency staff, assets sold at multi-million pound losses, and £20m for consultants to identify savings.
But behind the public rows, Somerset Council faces an ongoing battle to balance the books - the real issue at hand.
The government's decision to refuse the 11% increase is a blow to the authority's budgetsetting plans as it continues to stave off issuing a Section 114 notice - effectively declaring the council bankrupt.
Some councillors deny this has ever been a real possibility, though the facts and comments of others would dispute that.
But Cllr Rodrigues focussed on the impact on households in the county, and added: "This outcome gives Somerset
households some breathing space. The responsibility now lies squarely with the Liberal Democrats to work at pace, deliver the savings and efficiencies needed, and put the council on a secure financial footing, without repeatedly turning to residents to cover up their financial incompetence."
Despite the council requesting the extra increase, Gideon Amos, Lib Dem MP for Taunton & Wellington, said the 4.99% cap came after "intense lobbying" and "limited extra financial support for the county" from the government.
"Somerset Council has confirmed council tax will rise by no more than the 4.99% norm across the country following intense lobbying and the announcement of some limited extra financial support for the county by the Government," he said.
"The news will come as a relief after a much higher tax increase was projected by the Government’s provisional
settlement.
"After months of lobbying, I of course welcome the government announcing it is relieving councils of 90% of the special educational needs and disability debts they’ve been forced to build up and the additional funding for housing and homelessness in Somerset announced yesterday.
"But this is only help at the margins. This Government, by standing by their removal of the remoteness uplift show they really don’t understand the real issues faced here in rural Somerset. The result is a still-underfunded social care system with council taxpayers having to bail out a system that requires two out of every three pounds of Somerset Council’s budget."
MP Sir Ashley Fox (Con, Bridgwater), added: "When the Government takes the right decision, I will say so. Blocking the Liberal Democrats’ request to push council tax above the 4.99% referendum limit is the
right outcome for Somerset residents.
"Hundreds of people have written to me worried about the impact of a £200 hike on their household budgets, and this decision will bring real relief to families and pensioners already under pressure.
"The message to the Liberal Democrat administration is clear: stop wasting money and get a grip on the council’s finances. Independent auditors have already criticised the council for failing to put forward credible savings plans at pace, and residents should not be expected to pay more to cover up that failure."
Across the border, North Somerset Council (NSC) has been allowed an extra 4% increase (meaning around 9% on council tax bills).
And in Dorset, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council has been granted permission to raise council tax by an extra 1.75%, taking the limit to around 6.75%.

WASTEMAN - a dramatisation of life behind bars - has been nominated for a BAFTA, after being filmed largely in Somerset.
The prison thriller is set for a UK cinema release on February 20, having debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last year.
Starring David Jonsson and Tom Blyth, the film was filmed over two weeks in June 2024, largely at the Victorian B Wing, of Shepton Mallet Prison. It was produced by Adolescence director, Philip Barantini, with director Cal McMau now shortlisted for the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer BAFTA, alongside writers Hunter Andrews and Eoin Doran.
Dating from 1625, Shepton

Mallet Prison was the oldest operating prison when it closed in 2013.
Wasteman is the latest in a long line of film and TV productions to film at the location, with the likes of Paddington 2 and Wicked Little Letters previously setting up at the Somerset attraction.
The project was supported by Screen Somerset, which supports, encourages and

celebrates filming in the county, helping secure an estimated £4.2m to the county economy in 2025.
"Shepton Mallet Prison is a filming hotspot and a fantastic example of the wide range of locations that the county has to offer," said Councillor Mike Rigby, Somerset Council lead member for economic development, planning and assets.
"Working with locations like this – promoting them and helping filming go smoothly – is all part of making Somerset as film-friendly and attractive to filmmakers as possible."
The arrival of a new cellmate, the volatile and unpredictable Dee, played by Blyth, puts his chances of early parole and reuniting with his son in jeopardy.
Charlie Lawson, attraction director at Shepton Mallet Prison, added: "We’re really excited about the release of Wasteman, which shines a spotlight on Shepton Mallet Prison as a raw and authentic filming location.
"Support from the film industry in towns such as Shepton Mallet not only raises the profile of the location but also generates vital income.
"Productions like this directly support Cove Group, the owners of Shepton Mallet Prison, in showcasing, preserving, and restoring the 400-year-old site."

Wasteman follows Taylor, played by Jonsson, doing his best to stay out of trouble behind bars in a dehumanised world of drugs, parties and relentless violence.

A PERMANENT fossil gallery is launching this weekend at the Shoemakers Museum, in Street, with a special event for half term.
The attraction will offer visitors a new way to explore Somerset’s ichthyosaur discoveries, with 25 original marine fossil specimens on show, including complete skeletons, a rare plesiosaur and intricate fossils of marine life and ancient vegetation.
Running until Sunday (Fwebruary 22), the gallery will host a Fantastic Fossils programme for families through half term week, running until February 22. Children can follow an interactive pop-up trail to discover how ichthyosaurs would have lived, hunted and moved through the prehistoric seas beneath what is now Street, while families can also get hands-on by creating their own moving ichthyosaur in the education room, exploring real fossil specimens and following family-friendly trails. For details, and to book, see shoemakersmuseum.org.uk.

The plot, off the A358 at Cheshay’s Hill, Horton Cross, is close to the A303 and was formerly home to The Lamb Inn.
In December last year, planning permission was granted by Somerset Council for nine homes on the site, which measures, in total, around an acre in size.
Now, it is set to go under the hammer at an April 2 sale held by auctioneers Countrywide, with a guide price in excess of
£400,000.
“A rare opportunity to acquire a residential development site of circa one acre at Horton Cross, with a Grant of Outline Planning Permission in place, under application number 22/02709/ OUT, for ‘Outline application for the erection of up to 9
dwellinghouses with all matters reserved’ which was granted on the December 4, 2025,” the listing said.
It added: “The site can be located on the A358 at Cheshay’s Hill, having excellent access to the A303 and all of the major towns throughout South Somerset and East Devon.”
A SITE in Yeovil – with planning permission for 24 flats – is up for sale.
Greenslade Taylor Hunt (GTH) is marketing the plot, in Victoria Road, Yeovil, with an asking price around £450,000.
The 0.86-acre site, close to the town centre, has planning permission for 24 open-market flats and will be accessed from Victoria Road.
Flats approved would be housed in two three-storey apartment blocks, GTH said, according to the approved plans, with the permission also having other benefits.
"The site is not subject to a Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) as the planning permission pre-dates the introduction of the levy. No Section 106 contributions are required either,” a spokesperson went on.
“Both these factors should be of interest to any developers looking to take on the project.
“It is also close to Yeovil Pen Mill Railway Station and Leonardo – the home of British helicopters in the UK – which employs a highly skilled workforce.
“The site is on the market, on an unconditional basis, for offers in the region of £450,000.”

ASTALWART of shopping in Crewkerne is retiring from running a town antiques business – with the site now up for sale.
Well-known trader Anthony Bucke is shutting the Antiques Bazaar, at The Old Textile Mill in South Street, for a “welldeserved retirement”.
Announcing the move, 72-year-old Anthony said: “With mixed feelings, but very happy memories, I have decided that after 50 years trading in Crewkerne, it is time for me to attempt to retire.
“The last 14 years at Antiques Bazaar have been amazing. We have such a friendly, professional bunch of traders, who have sourced some amazing stock to keep our customers flocking in.
“And we could not have operated without the dedicated team of four cashiers who have kept the place running so professionally, seven days a week, come rain or shine.”
He said customers had spanned generations of families from in and around Crewkerne and across Somerset.
“Only this week, I delivered a large oak court cupboard to a young man who represented the third generation of his family, all of whom have been my customers over the past 50 years,” Anthony went on.
“That is so very heartwarming and gratifying. And certainly not the only such example.
“The Original Factory Shop will be leaving by the end of March 2026, and Antiques
Bazaar will close on Tuesday, March 31.”
He added: “So a big ‘thank you’ to my staff, my friends, customers, neighbours, suppliers and contractors, fellow business owners – all of you who have been around during the past 50 years.
“There will be even more bargains to be had over the coming weeks, so please pop in, you never know what you’ll find.”
The site is now being sold, with Greenslade Taylor Hunt (GTH) marketing the premises.
“Anthony has traded in the town for 50 years and been a valued member of the business community for many decades, but he has decided that the time is right to embark on the next chapter of his life,” a

spokesperson said.
“His Antiques Bazaar business will close at the end of March providing an exciting opportunity for a new retailer to take on the site.”
The site, including land and buildings, stretches to around 0.875 acres on a corner plot.
It comprises two Class E units suitable for a range of uses and with on-site parking. The units provide a combined total of 18,334 sq ft.
The site is on the market with a guide price of £750,000.

TWO Somerset branches of Lloyds Bank are closing.
The chain has announced 95 sites –made up of 53 Lloyds branches, 31 Halifax and 11 Bank of Scotland outlets –will shut between May this year and March next year, including Lloyds in
Street and in Clevedon.
Lloyds said the closures were coming as more customers choose to bank online.
“Customers want the freedom to bank in the way that works for them and we offer more choice and ways to manage money than ever before,” they added.
MP Sarah Dyke (Lib Dem, Glastonbury & Somerton) said: “It is unacceptable that Street residents will be left without a physical bank branch.
“This closure will make accessing cash and banking services more challenging for elderly and disabled customers."

AGRANT of more than £800,000 will see improved care for Somerset patients undergoing back surgery.
The award comes from The League of Friends of Musgrove Park Hospital, in Taunton, to boost provision for people facing complicated spinal surgery.
Patients who need a spinal fusion will benefit from safer and shorter operations, the hospital said, thanks to the introduction of a robotic navigation system that assists surgeons.
It’s the first time a system of this type has been available to spinal surgeons at the hospital, and has been made possible by an £835,000 donation from the League of Friends and its supporters – the entire cost.
It means Musgrove Park Hospital has now become only the second hospital of its size, outside of the large teaching hospitals, to have access to the technology.
League of Friends president, Clinton Rogers, said: "A couple of years ago we donated £1.5 million to buy a state-of-the-art surgical robot which is now
being used in a number of different surgical disciplines across the hospital.
"To be able now to fund a second robotic system to support cutting edge spinal surgery is a huge honour for us.
"When the surgical teams came to explain the enormous benefits to us – not just for patients but surgeons as well – it was frankly a no-brainer.
"Our mission has always been to help provide the very best surgical care at Musgrove. This is a massive step forward."
Mr Ashok Subramanian, a consultant spinal surgeon at Musgrove Park Hospital, which is run by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, added: "We want to say a huge thank you to the League of Friends and its supporters for this very generous donation, which will benefit the many patients now and in the future.
"We’ve introduced a navigation unit with a robotic arm that helps our surgeons guide and insert pedicle screws, which are surgical implants used in a spinal fusion to stabilise a patient’s vertebrae.
"As surgeons, our standard practice is to use an x-ray to
view areas of the spine where we need to make an incision, as it guides us through the tiny path. But on some occasions the quality of the x-ray means we can’t see clearly, especially in patients with a larger body mass, and the knock-on effect of this means we need to take much longer to ensure each screw goes into the right place at the back of the spine. We will also need to use lots of X-ray exposure time.
"We have only a 1-2 millimetre safety zone, as it’s very close to the spinal cord, nerve, or blood vessels – all of which need to be avoided.
"It’s therefore quite a high pressure stage of the operation, so by using the robotic navigation system we can plan everything in advance through the computer system, so we know exactly where to make the incisions during the operation - and it’s much safer too.
"This surgical plan guides the system’s rigid robotic arm to a specific region of the patient’s spine, similar to a planned route or pathway on a GPS.
"Throughout the procedure, the surgical instruments and implants are continuously
displayed on the screen for the surgeon and wider theatres team to monitor, allowing the surgeon to view live feedback during the procedure.
"We don’t need to use X-ray during the operation either, so there’s less radiation, not only for the patient, but also our colleagues in the operating theatre, reducing the risk of radiation induced cancer. In addition, they don’t need to use the heavy lead aprons, so they’re at less risk of back pain and other occupational injuries.
"We see this as a very useful tool to improve accuracy, and at the same time it reduces radiation exposure to colleagues. That’s the first step as we can also apply it in lots of different operations, like inserting a cage, performing osteotomies and in spinal endoscopies once we’ve learned the technology and started trusting it.
"There’s evidence that while it normally takes around 10 minutes to place a screw, this reduces to about one minute using this technology, which is particularly great when we need to place 10 screws into a patient."

VAPING could in a car with a child present could soon be banned in England, if new laws are approved.
The Government, as part of a new strategy to boost the health of the nation, is looking to introduce new rules to protect children from the impact of second-hand smoke.
A public consultation on new restrictions has been launched, running until May 8, with responses helping shape regulations under the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which is progressing through parliament.
Smoking with a child in a car, or any other vehicle, has been illegal in England and Wales since October 2015. Both the driver and the smoker can be fined £50 each, even if the windows of the vehicle are open. And in Scotland, a ban on smoking in a car with a child present came into force in December 2016.
Under the new proposals, people would be prevented from smoking, vaping, or using heated tobacco products in cars or at public playgrounds.
Announcing the plans Chief Medical Officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty, said: "People who do not smoke but who are exposed to second-hand
smoke can suffer significant harmful effects on their health, including an increased risk of asthma, poor birth outcomes, several cancers, stroke and heart disease.
"The health risks are greatest for children, pregnant women and people with medical conditions," he added.
The proposals would extend smoke-free and heated-tobacco-free rules to outdoor areas around healthcare facilities and indoor spaces where smoking is banned.
The measures would not apply to outdoor hospitality venues, such as pub gardens, private homes and private outdoor areas.
Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting, said: "Second-hand smoke increases the risk of heart disease and lung cancer, and we want to protect children and the sick from harm.
"Prevention is better than cure, so this Government is taking pressure off the NHS and building a healthier Britain where everyone lives well for longer."
The Government said the proposals would help "create a smoke-free generation and protect young people from a lifetime of addiction".

The February sale at the Somerset Auction Rooms featured lots including a Faberge enamel egg pendant, an Art Deco platinum and diamond ladies cocktail watch, and a rare George I silver saffron teapot.

A 9ct gold JW Benson half hunter pocket watch, hallmarked Birmingham, drew pre-sale interest and sold for £1,200 – double its pre-sale guide.
Comfortably ahead of its estimate was a 17th Century silver Apostle spoon, with a fig shaped bowl, thought to date
from around 1651. Sold from a private collection, the rare example sold for £1,100.
