More nursery places on offer after expansion finished

WORKERS at a major Somerset employerand people living nearby - can now enjoy expanded nursery facilities.

The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) has officially opened its expanded on-site nursery, Tops Mini Mariners, increasing childcare capacity for employees and the community.

MP Gideon Amos (Lib Dem, Taunton & Wellington) officially opened the expanded facilities on Friday (January 30) at the UKHO base, in Taunton.

Mr Amos met UKHO chief executive Vanessa Blake, as well as senior staff members from Tops Mini Mariners, who operate the nursery.

The nursery provides childcare for children aged from three months to pre-school age and currently serves UKHO employees and residents living near the facility, in Admiralty Way.

Thanks to the expansion works, the purpose-built Tops Mini Mariners nursery has increased capacity from 35 to 43 children.

“It’s great to see an important public body like the UK Hydrographic Office in Taunton opening such a wonderful new nursery and supporting their staff and the local community in this way,” MP Mr Amos said.

“It was my privilege to open this new facility –congratulations to all involved.”

Ms Blake added: “It was a pleasure to welcome Gideon Amos MP to the UKHO on the opening of our newly renovated nursery. Supporting our employees is central to our values, and by increasing capacity we are also pleased to support more families from the local area.”

Busy stretch to close for gas pipe renewal works

A MAIN Somerset road will be closed during the half term week as gas pipe upgrade work continues.

Wales & West Utilities has been working to upgrade gas pipes in the Langport Road area of Long Sutton.

Now, as part of the final section of work, Langport Road will be closed between the junctions of Burnt House Lane and Shute Lane from February 16 to 20.

The firm said a diversion route will be clearly signposted, with motorists advised to allow sufficient time for travel.

Wales & West Utilities’ Roxanne Whittaker is managing the work, and said: “This final section of work has been planned during the half term break to minimise disruption locally.

“We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make

sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community. Whether it’s heating your

home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”

Fire safety faults identified at Hinkley site

ANUMBER of "significant shortfalls" in fire safety were discovered at the Hinkley Point C construction site during an inspection.

Experts from the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) inspected the Unit 1 HF (electrical) building at the Somerset site in December last year, identified issues including 'combustible materials' in an emergency exit staircase; lack of a 'suitable or sufficient' fire risk assessment; and 'inadequate means of escape'.

Mechanical, electrical and heating (MEH), ventilation and air conditioning work is overseen by Altrad Babcock Ltd, Altrad services Ltd, Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick Ltd, Cavendish nuclear, and NG Bailey Ltd, the ONR said, with all being issued with fire enforcement notices.

Hinkley Point C said the concerns were being addressed.

An ONR spokesperson said the enforcement action "requires the named organisations to make improvements to ensure

adequate arrangements are developed and embedded to address the shortfalls in compliance and prevent reoccurrence".

Mahtab Khan, ONR head of regulation - EPR, added: "Fire safety is an important part of our regulatory activity and is not optional – it is a legal requirement that protects lives.

"We will not hesitate to take enforcement action where safety standards fall short, and we

expect all dutyholders to treat fire safety with the urgency it demands.

"Working alongside the principal contractor and MEH alliance, we have made good progress in understanding the root causes of these shortfalls to ensure they are addressed."

The NR said there were no consequences to employees, the public or the environment as a result of the shortfalls, but that inspectors had identified the

potential for harm and risk of serious injury, which required regulatory action.

A Hinkley Point C spokesperson said: "We are working closely with our contract partners to ensure that the appropriate enhancements are made to address the matters identified by the regulator. "Safety is our overriding priority, and we are already acting to oversee improvements."

Appeal launched over pub housing plan refusal

THE refusal of plans to convert a former Somerset pub into a house – and build four more in the grounds – is being appealed.

Wellington Pub Company is appealing a decision by Somerset Council to turn down the proposed development of the former Britannia Inn site, in Bath Road, Wells.

The scheme would have seen the main pub building converted into a four-bedroom house, with two two-bed and two three-bed homes also built on the plot.

However, it was refused by the council in December last year, with planners citing it was “premature” to claim the pub was no longer viable; a lack of a nutrient neutrality mitigation statement; and a lack

of supporting information on the impact of the plans on access and parking grounds.

Now, the refusal is being appealed, with the public able to submit comments until March 4.

People can submit their thoughts via

https://appeal-planningdecision.service.gov.uk/ comment-planning-appeal/ enter-appeal-reference, or by post to The Planning Inspectorate, c/o QUADIENT, 69 Buckingham Avenue, Slough, SL1 4PN.

The appeal comes as a community group continues fundraising in a bid to purchase and re-open the pub – which closed in 2021.

The East Wells Community Benefit Society has raised almost £100,000 as it seeks to retain the inn, and was among objectors to the initial planning application.

Plans for overhaul of landmark Clarks Village units revealed

CLARKS Village could soon see a major change – including the partdemolition of a landmark store – if plans are approved.

The Harris Partnership, on behalf of the outlet centre’s owner Landsec U+I, has submitted plans to divide and part-demolish a unit at the Street shopping complex to create two new stores. If approved, the scheme would see Unit 71 – currently occupied by Next and an attached toilet block – divided and partially demolished to create “two separate units, Units 71 and 71A”.

The current shop and toilet block would be reconfigured to create two “appropriately-scaled and flexible retail units better suited to modern commercial

requirements”, the plans said.

“A new shopfront is proposed to replace the existing entrance, improving legibility and activation at street level,” the application went on.

“The shopfront will be constructed using high quality aluminium glazing frames, complemented by timber-clad gabled features above. The chosen materials have been carefully selected to integrate harmoniously with the surrounding architectural context of the village.

interest, and the overall vitality of the shopping environment.”

It said the redevelopment of the building would create new units and “generate additional employment opportunities for

materials that are sympathetic to the surrounding context,” the application concluded.

“This approach improves the character and appearance of the area, contributing positively to the area and reinforcing the vibrant high street culture of the shopping village.” No details are contained of future occupants of the proposed units –including whether Next would remain. Passenger in 'serious condition' after crash near Watchet

A PASSENGER was left with "serious injuries" after a crash in West Somerset on Friday (February 6) - with a person later arrested in connection with the incident.

The crash, involving a blue Ford C-Max, happened at around 6.10pm in Brendon Road, Watchet, police said.

"A passenger within the vehicle sustained serious injuries and he remains in hospital.

The family of the man are aware," an Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said.

"The driver of the vehicle was not at the scene when emergency services arrived.

"Enquiries were carried out and led to a man, in his 20s, being arrested a few hours later.

"The man was arrested on suspicion of several driving-related offences, including

causing serious injury by dangerous driving, as well as driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

"We’re keen to speak to anyone who saw the Ford C-Max prior to the incident or who witnessed the collision take place, including people with CCTV or dashcam footage."

Anyone with information should contact police on 101, reference 5226034865.

M5 drink driver had cider bottles in van after M5 stop

ADRINK-DRIVER was pulled over on the M5 in Somerset – and found with empty cider bottles in his van.

Stuart Kent, from Benfieldside, Durham, pleaded guilty to driving a vehicle without due care and attention, failing to cooperate with a preliminary test, and failing to provide a specimen for analysis and was sentenced at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on January 27.

The 45-year-old was banned from driving for three years, as well as being handed a 16-week custodial sentence suspended for 18-months, and ordered to pay a £154 victim surcharge, court costs of £85, and to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.

The charges came after Kent was spotted driving southbound on the M5 from Avonmouth at around 8.55pm on Sunday, November 30 last year, in a Vauxhall Vivaro panel van.

Witnessed described the vehicle as swerving, unable to be driven in a straight line, at

times travelling close to other vehicles and narrowly avoiding several collisions.

Officers who arrived at the scene described the vehicle as “swerving between lanes” and were concerned the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

Pre-emptive tactics and a stinger device were then used to stop the vehicle in the interests of public safety near Taunton Deane Motorway Services.

When Kent was out of the vehicle, an officer said to him while he appeared to stumble: “Having trouble standing up a little bit, are we?”

The court was told Kent smelled strongly of alcohol and refused to provide a roadside breath sample while in the back of a patrol car, and was subsequently arrested.

He was then taken to Bridgwater custody unit where he refused to provide a further sample of breath for analysis without providing a medical reason, and said: “I’m damned if I do, and damned if I don’t.”

He pleaded guilty to the offences at Taunton Magistrates’

New bus shelter will protect commuters

BUS users will now be protected from the elements by a new shelter near Wellington.

The structure was installed at Rockwell Green last week and opened in the following days, once concrete had dried.

“Installation has gone very smoothly and we are pleased to see this shiny new shelter in place,” a Wellington Town Council spokesperson said.

Road rage altercation

Court on December 15, where he was given an interim driving ban ahead of sentencing.

PC Mike Chapman, officer in the case, said: “This is an appalling case where a driver under the influence of alcohol drove a significant distance along the M5 southbound, at times swerving and narrowly avoiding collisions with other vehicles.

“He made a conscious decision to get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol, and we welcome this sentence as he now won’t be able to put himself or others at risk of serious injury, or worse, through his careless actions.

“If you fail to provide a sample, you will be charged with that offence which can be as serious as drink driving itself.”

TWO drivers got into an “altercation” during a road rage incident in Westonzoyland.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after an incident in Standards Road at around 5.45pm on Saturday, January 24.

An Avon & Somerset Police spokesperson said officers were called to the incident, which involved the drivers of a green Ford Fiesta and a grey BMW X5.

“We have carried out CCTV and house-to-house enquiries in connection with the incident and are now appealing for any witnesses to the incident or anybody with information to come forward,” they said.

“We would particularly like to hear from the driver of a silver car who we understand may have been in the area at the time of the incident.”

Anyone with information regarding the incident, and those with relevant dashcam footage which might help, should contact police on 101, quoting reference 5226021811.

Theme park firm enters liquidation - as a nearby rival looks to expand facilities

BREAN Theme Park has gone into liquidation –plunging the future of the Somerset attraction into doubt - while another nearby venue looks to expand facilities.

The company that runs the park appointed liquidators on January 28, it has been confirmed, and is required to cease trading.

Brean Leisure Park is a separate entity to Unity Holidays, which owns the land but does not operate the attraction, and is unaffected by the move.

Nicholas Stafford, of Hazlewoods LLP, has been appointed as liquidator, and will oversee the process of dividing company assets between shareholders and creditors.

The liquidation notice said: “Notice is given that the following written resolutions of the above-named company were passed on January 28, 2026, as a Special resolution and Ordinary resolution respectively: 1. ‘That the Company be wound up voluntarily’ and 2. ‘That Nicholas Stafford (IP No: 27270) of Hazlewoods LLP, Staverton Court, Staverton, Cheltenham, GL51 0UX be appointed Liquidator of the Company’.”

Brean Theme Park had been due to re-open on march 14, though that is now uncertain,

with the company not yet commenting on the liquidation.

It boasts rides including NASA Rockets, the Bulldog Coaster, Terror Castle and Spinning Barrels.

Posting at the end of the 2025 season, the attraction said: “As our gates close for the season, we want to say a huge thank you to all our visitors, season pass holders, and supporters who made this year one to remember.

“From fun-filled family days to thrilling rides and laughter all around – you’ve made Brean Theme Park the place to be.

“We’re now officially closed for the season, but don’t worry – we’ll be back before you

know it, ready for another year of excitement and adventure.”

Meanwhile, Haven Leisure Ltd, has applied to Somerset Council for permission to extend the Mach and Barrelbranded facilities at Burnhamon-Sea Holiday Village, off South Esplanade.

“Haven has undertaken a review of its parks and is looking for opportunities to invest and enhance existing facilities,” the application said. “This includes its own range of bar/restaurants, known as Mash and Barrel.

“It is proposed that Burnham is an appropriate location for an expansion of the existing space and wider refurbishment that

will allow improvement of existing facilities.”

The application outlines plans for “single storey extensions to customer and service areas”, “refurbishment of relevant external areas including erection of canopy” and “minor changes to existing elevations”.

A canopy would be installed on an expanded outdoor seating area, the application said, as well as the refurbishment of external areas.

“The predominant purpose for the proposed extension is to provide additional customer seating, as part of wider refurbishment and reconfiguration of the unit,” it said.

“The remainder of the external area will be refurbished, with additional canopy space installed to enable more opportunities for al-fresco dining as well as provide an attractive environment which looks out onto existing activity areas including outdoor pool.

“The internal area and space will be reconfigured to provide additional service space as well as a dedicated staff area, with the displaced customer seating to be replaced with the extension and terrace.”

Winter Coat Exchange scheme continuing at libraries

A SCHEME which sees people donate –and collect – winter coats from Somerset libraries is continuing as bad weather continues across the county.

“Now in its third year, the Winter Coat Exchange has become a well-established

community initiative, helping people stay warm and dry through the winter while reducing waste,” a Somerset Council spokesperson said.

“Last year alone, 2,470 coats were donated, with 2,086 coats taken by residents across Somerset.

“Any surplus donations were passed on to RAFT – Refugee Aid From Taunton –supporting displaced people locally and further afield, alongside other community groups and charities.”

Hundreds of fresh potholes reported on

HUNDREDS of road defects - including potholes, blocked drains and more - have been reported across Somerset as the county is battered by bad weather, with a repair bill of more than £1 million anticipated for extra issues.

Motorists and pedestrians have been reporting damage to roads and walkways as the county continues to see flooding and heavy rainfall following Storm Chandra - adding to a list of thousands of alreadyhighlighted issues.

News of more than 850 fresh reports over the weekend of January 31/February 1 alone - adding to a list of 3,500 'recent defects' - comes just weeks after Somerset roads were ranked as 'green' by the government, making the top 30 out of 153 authorities for road maintenance.

Now, Somerset Council leader Bill Revans (Lib Dem, North Petherton) has called on the government to recognise the huge financial impact the clear-up was having on rural communities.

Live-in Care

"This is another example of where the national model for funding local councils is broken," he said.

"In Somerset, we are a rural county with a large road

network and our geography means we are more vulnerable to flooding.

"With extreme weather and storms becoming more frequent, we want to invest in roads and infrastructure, but find ourselves

Somerset roads

in a situation where more and more of our budget must be spent on essential, demand-led services like social care.

"We have worked extremely efficiently with limited resources providing a comprehensive maintenance programme in recent years to ensure our network is fit for purpose, but the additional challenge and increasing frequency of these sorts of weather events, means the timely repair of the mounting number of defects will become impossible without additional funding.

"We have yet to assess the full extent of the damage to the roads caused by flooding, but we are already seeing about 60 per cent to 70 per cent more potholes this winter than in previous years due to the extreme weather. The cost of fixing those extra potholes alone is likely to be around £1 million

before we even consider the cost of repairing roads that are currently underwater.

"We will continue to work hard to keep our residents safe and our roads in order, but this again highlights the need for long-awaited reform which properly takes into account the additional pressures on rural counties like Somerset.

"We would appreciate people’s patience on the network while teams try to deal with this damage."

Boost for group supporting isolated adults

ISOLATED adults in the Chard area will benefit from support and connection thanks to a £5,000 charity grant.

The cash, from the Somerset Community Foundation (SCF), has been awarded to Watch CIO to help fund weekly peersupport sessions, which help adults experiencing loneliness, and social isolation build confidence, connect with others and feel less alone.

Led by lived-experience facilitators and volunteers, the sessions give participants the chance to form friendships, gain resilience, and access ongoing support within their community.

"Watch CIO provides a lifeline for people who might otherwise go without support," said Clare Stephen, programmes manager at SCF.

The grant came ahead of Time to Talk Day, on February

5, which highlighted the importance of conversation and community in protecting mental wellbeing.

"I know from personal experience how isolating mental health challenges can feel," said Julie Matthews, founder and CEO of Watch CIO, who was awarded the British Empire Medal for her services to mental health in Somerset.

"It’s easy to believe that no one else understands.

The Most Revd Stephen Cottrell, Archbishop of York, presided over the service.

The new bishop was welcomed to the Diocese of Bath and Wells at Evensong at Wells Cathedral on Sunday (February 8).

At Southwark, Fiona was presented for ordination and consecration by the Bishop of Bath and Wells, as receiving Bishop, and the Bishop of Hereford, the sending bishop.

During the service, her

PUBS have been a mainstay of Somerset communities for generations. The 'local' has been a meeting point - and a place of enjoymentfor residents, musical groups, workers and business owners over centuries.

But the humble pub is facing a torrid time. A stalling economy, ever-growing taxes, rising costs and changes to social habits have all had an impact on out

beloved drinking holes.

Ahead of launching a new campaign highlighting Somerset's amazing locals, your Leveller took to the archives to find snaps of social spots from years gone by - and used AI to bring them back to life with colour.

We also took a look at the sites now to see if the pub was still open. We'll publish new photos in each edition of your Leveller,

so keep your eyes peeled for your local - lost of still going strong.

The Railway Hotel, Glastonbury

The Ring of Bells, Ashcott

The Ring of Bells, in Ashcott, between Bridgwater and Street, was a skittles hotspot for many years.

However, it closed a few years ago and fell into disrepair, and went under the hammer in December 2025 in a pretty poor state.

The frontage remained pretty-much unchanged from the original photo, taken around 1960, apart from a rebuilt fundtion room and skittle alley - and some more modern cars outside!

Let's hope it comes back into use soon.

The Railway Hotel, in Benedict Street, Glastonbury, was at some point renamed (probably due to the distinct lack of railway in the town post-Beeching) to The King Arthur, which remains a popular drinking spot and music venue to this day. In fact, very little seems to have changed at all since the original photograph was taken, around 1959/60!

Wells welcomes world's finest musicians

SOME of the world’s most distinguished musicians are performing in Somerset as part of a series of concerts.

Launched in 2025, the Maestro Series was created to give music lovers across the South West a rare monthly opportunity to hear internationally-revered artists without the need to travel to major cities - and has returned for 2026.

"We were overwhelmed by the response, and agreed to organise a second series without hesitation," said Alex Laing, director of music at Wells Cathedral School.

All performances take place in Cedars Hall, seating 250 people, with pianist Imogen Cooper, left, performing at the next concert tomorrow (February 12), who praised it as "one of the finest acoustics anywhere", while jazz vocalist Clare Teal, performing in November, calls it "an utter gem of a venue".

Tickets for the Maestro Series start from £30, with under 18s going free. See wells. cathedral.school/maestro.

"Once again, we’ve ensured the programme offers something for everyone — from solo recitals and duos to string quartets and song, featuring instruments from piano to saxophone."

Could you give Doris a new home?

ST Giles has seen an influx of dogs recently, some found as strays and others handed in; many in poor condition and in need of veterinary care.

Apparently, after Christmas, many older dogs are abandoned in favour of puppies given as presents.

Two of the dogs - Doris the bulldog and Kaia the cane Corso - have had their ears cropped. The RSPCA strongly condemns this practice. It is illegal in the UK; it is a barbaric mutilation often done for cosmetic purposes to make dogs look intimidating.

There are fewer cats on the adoption website at the moment, compared to dogs, thanks to the kind folk who have been keen to adopt feline friends recently. Long may this continue.

If you are thinking of adding a dog or cat to your family in 2026 please consider a rescue; there are so many animals desperate for a second chance in life.

I mentioned Doris earlier and you will see her appealing face peering at you here.

Doris was abandoned by her owner, but is really an adorable girl.

On arrival at the centre she was drained and appeared to have given up. She has found the kennel environment disconcerting but with the kindness and patience of the staff her confidence is beginning to surface.

Doris walks well on the lead. She will pass other dogs on leads happily, but becomes nervous if they are off leads; the

staff are currently working on this with her and she will need a human who can continue this training.

Bulldogs are affectionate, loyal and gentle and make excellent family pets; Doris is no exception.

She would like a human to be around most of the day initially until she settles.

Could you offer this charming girl a new start in life for 2026?

n Visit stgilesanimalwelfare. co.uk/adoptions/doris for more details on Doris and to see other animals up for adoption.

The hidden cost of challenging a Will

JUDGES make decisions on legal issues, but they also take into account the conduct of the parties both before and during the lawsuit and how this might impact their case.

Let’s look at the real-world consequences of the High Court’s decision in Ellis v Ellis, an inheritance case.

Background: A Family Dispute Over a Farm

The dispute centred on the estate of the Late Yeamon Keith Care, who left his share of the Tregear Farm in Cornwall to Luke Ellis. However, Keith’s brother, Vivian, challenged the Will. Keith died in March 2020 and Vivian indicated an intention to challenge the Will a few months later. However, Luke did not issue proceedings to prove the Will until July 2022, at which point Vivian responded with a defence and a counterclaim.

Following a case and costs management conference in May 2023 and mediation being attempted in September 2023 to no avail, the judgement handed down in January 2025 upheld the validity of the Will and dismissed all Vivian’s counter claims.

Successful claim?

On the face of it, this appeared to be a straightforward success.

However, the real lesson emerged in the subsequent costs Judgement. Although the starting point was the known ‘costs follow the event’ rule, the Ellis v Ellis case highlights that costs orders are neither automatic nor absolute.

The court went on to undertake a detailed examination of the parties’ conduct, because Vivian argued there should be a departure from that rule.

The journey to litigation can matter as much as the destination.

Compliance with Dispute Procedure

When a dispute arises, parties are expected to engage meaningfully with pre-action conduct requirements under the Civil Procedure Rules - the whole purpose of which is to keep cases from needing to go to court. These encourage early exchange of information, consideration of settlement and the use of alternative dispute resolution, with litigation (court proceedings) regarded as a last resort.

Where a court finds a material failure to comply with pre-action obligations, it may impose sanctions even against the party who has been ultimately successful, retaining full discretion in assessing the seriousness and impact of non-compliance.

Vivian argued that Luke should not recover all his costs because of alleged failures before the claim was issued. He also disputed whether the executors to the Will should recover their costs and claimed Luke’s settlement offer was unclear.

The Court’s Decision

Here are the outcomes of the

case:

n Trial costs: the High Court ordered Vivian to pay the costs of both Luke and the executors, applying the general rule that costs follow the event.

The court rejected arguments that Luke’s failure to send a formal Letter of Claim justified departure from that rule.

n Letter of claim: Vivian had long been in possession of the key documents and sufficient information to formulate his case; the absence of a Letter of Claim from Luke caused no prejudice or lost opportunity to settle.

n Mediation: The court also dismissed criticism of the timing of mediation.

Although mediation did not take place until September 2023, the delay was justified by Vivian’s failure to provide key disclosure, including medical records and evidence supporting his claim.

Earlier mediation would likely have been ineffective, and no costs sanction was appropriate.

n Probate costs: The established probate costs exceptions were found not to apply.

The Will had been professionally prepared and was clear, and any reasonable period for further investigation had expired well before proceedings were issued.

The court upheld Luke’s offer as clear and a genuine attempt to settle, rejecting

submissions that it was uncertain or technically flawed. As a result, the usual costs consequences applied. The court ordered Vivian to pay the executors’ costs, holding that it would be wholly unjust for either Luke or the estate to bear them.

Why This Matters

For those considering a probate challenge, Ellis v Ellis is a stark reminder that courts will closely scrutinise conduct long before trial.

Delays, failure to articulate a claim, withholding disclosure or pursuing weak grounds beyond a reasonable investigation phase, can carry severe costs consequences. Probate claims must be pursued promptly, proportionately and on a properly informed basis. Parties who act reasonably, engage with settlement and comply with procedural obligations are far more likely to be protected on costs, making early legal advice and a careful pre-action strategy critical in probate disputes. How Pardoes can help At Pardoes, we understand that there are times in life when it can seem very daunting to need legal advice, particularly if you have lost a loved one, need to plan for your later years or have never had the need to use a solicitor.

Bakery submits new premises plans amid expansion bid

A WEST Somerset bakery could soon expand, if plans are approved.

Glenmore Bakery has submitted a planning application to Somerset Council to build a detached building split into three ‘light industrial’ units at the Roughmoor Industrial Estate, in Williton.

The larger of the units (166sqm) would be retained by Glenmore, the plans said, with two others (both 74sqm) offered for “local letting”.

“The proposed building would provide a positive contribution to the area by allowing the applicant’s successful

business to expand further and provide two highly desirable commercial units for local letting,” it said.

It would be accessed via Slade Way, as the current buildings are.

Minehead business group extended after launch success

ABUSINESS networking breakfast group has announced a schedule of 2026 meetings after a successful launch.

The Connects Minehead group, launched by Amicus Law, launched last month with a breakfast gathering at The Beach Hotel.

And due to the success of that event, it will meet on the second Wednesday of each month throughout the year, starting today (February 11) between 8.30am and 10.30am, at The Beach Hotel.

"Each event is open to anyone who works in, runs a business in, or actively supports West Somerset," a spokesperson said. "With a rotation of guest speakers due to attend, the initiative aims to support the local economy and wider community, while creating a collaborative space for business leaders to network and share ideas."

Jon Goss, a health insurance specialist at WPA, attended the first gathering and said: "I really enjoyed the event and thought it struck a fair balance between being friendly and having a genuine business focus. Starting with coffee worked well as it gave time to chat and properly connect before things got going.

"The turnout was very good

for a first event, breakfast was lovely, and the atmosphere was relaxed but professional. Overall, a very positive experience and I’m looking forward to the next one which I’ve already booked."

Guests can enjoy a relaxed morning of breakfast and informal networking, alongside meaningful conversations with

business owners, professionals, employees, and community champions.

Mildred is here: Bentley Continental GT Supersports

IF YOU want a car that is unique and special, you’d better get a move on. Mildred has arrived and time is short. Conceived back in September 2024, Project Mildred has been carefully shrouded in secrecy, from the outside at least. The internal excitement must have been feverish in comparison, given that it was a mere six weeks between the board’s nod of approval and the appearance of a test car. A little more than 12 months later, Mildred has been revealed as the new Bentley Continental GT Supersports.

What began with a small engineering team wondering how a rear-wheel drive, sub-two-tonne Continental GT might behave dynamically, has led to the Bentley Supersports being described as the most driver-focused Continental GT ever. 100 years after the birth of the first Bentley ‘Super Sports’, the nameplate returns to Bentley for only the fourth Supersports model in history.

It may be based on the Continental GT, but the new Supersports is nearly half a tonne lighter than the standard car, much of that coming from the powertrain changes and a prolific use of carbon fibre. The hybrid system has gone, the all-wheel drive system has gone, the rear cabin is gone, and the aluminium roof is now a carbon fibre panel. Even things like sound insulation and ‘unnecessary in a driver-focused GT’ assistance systems have been removed. New exterior details have then been added to make this the most aggressive Bentley Grand Tourer ever.

A new lower front bumper, with an integrated front splitter (the largest aerodynamic splitter ever fitted to a road-going Bentley) includes two new channels that feed cool air to the front brakes and engine

respectively. A new lightweight mesh grille, with a design unique to Supersports, is laser cut in extremely fine aluminium. Two pairs of stacked dive planes sit at the corners of the front bumper, working in conjunction with the splitter to reduce front lift. A new rear diffuser, built into an all-new rear bumper construction includes vents for the rear wheel arches. And to complete the look, a one-piece, fixed rear spoiler is fitted to the top of the boot lid.

Not only do these changes add to the aggressive look of the Supersports, but together, the additions generate an extra 300kg more downforce than a Continental GT Speed.

Inside what is now a two-seat cabin, highly bolstered sports seats have been positioned lower in the car, the space where the rear cabin used to be is now covered with a carbon fibre and leather shell, and there is extensive use of leather, Dinamica, and even more carbon fibre to create a performance-focused space. You can’t sacrifice every comfort, so the seats still feature 11-way electric adjustment and heating.

As already mentioned, the powertrain of the new Supersports is non-hybrid and rear-wheel drive to reduce weight, with a new, strengthened 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 at the heart of the car.

Featuring a stronger crankcase, uprated cylinder heads, and larger turbos, the Bentley Supersports sends 657bhp to 22-inch forged aluminium alloy rear wheels via an uprated eight-speed double clutch transmission and eLSD. The engine breathes through a full-length titanium sports exhaust and should be good for a 3.7s sprint to 62mph and a top speed of around 192mph.

The suspension and driving modes have been specifically tuned to work in perfect conjunction with the new RWD setup, with new wishbones, rear axle, springs, and dampers keeping the power on the tarmac. And when it comes to stopping again, you can rely on the largest automotive braking system in the world - 440mm Carbon-Silicon-Carbide (CSiC) discs on the front axle, clamped by 10-piston calipers, and 410 mm discs with four-piston calipers at the rear – fitted as standard. But if you want one, you really will have to be quick.

Bentley premiered the new Continental GT Supersports at a special event in Dubai at the end of January. Order books will be

officially opening in March with deliveries due to commence in early 2027. The only catch is that Bentley will be handcrafting just 500 examples. Although, that’s not really the only catch. Aside from the very limited numbers, there is also the small matter of the price tag, or lack thereof.

A quick glance at Bentley’s website is enough to reveal the words, “Enquire to Buy”, which only ever means one thing. The general consensus seems to be that anyone making a serious enquiry should expect to be handing over around £400,000 – and that’s likely just a starting price. You can imagine which direction it will go after the nice Bentley representative suggests perusing the options list.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, Project Mildred is a reference to Mildred Mary Petre, a racing driver, powerboat racer, and pilot who, in 1929, drove a Bentley 4½ Litre around the Montlhery circuit in France, solo, for 24 hours, averaging almost 90 mph and establishing a new endurance record at the time. Quite a feat for today, let alone almost a century ago.

Home & Garden

How to grow a ray of winter sunshine...

THERE can be little as welcome as those first flowers on a winter-flowering clematis in a sunny corner of the garden. They seem ethereal, unreal, a special gift from the gods of the garden. They cannot fail to lift the spirits. And they are well worth a little pampering.

Clematis armandii is a gloriously vigorous, evergreen form with big white or even pink, flowers that are 5-6cm across with a superb lemony scent.

It has a large presence in the winter garden. In the right spot, that is with lots of sunshine and a little warmth, it will spread its charms to 6-8 metres across.

In colder areas of the UK, it might be a little reluctant to flower, so it’s worth finding somewhere sheltered for it to

flower away in the middle of winter.

If it is happy, it will grab everyone’s attention while winter is slowly turning into spring.

There are some toughies too. Although Clematis cirrhosa originates in Sardinia and Corsica, it seems pretty happy in our less equable climate, although it too prefers plenty of winter sunshine on its flowers.

Like all clematis, its base needs the shade of other plants or in the lee of a strategically placed stone, with its head in the sunshine, rewarding the gardener with mid-winter flowers from December until February.

There are some pretty, speckled varieties too – C. cirrhosa var. balearica has pink spotted petals; and C. cirrhosa Freckles is positively covered in pink spots. They are

all delightfully floriferous at a time when the garden is becoming increasingly devoid of flowers.

Perhaps a little more special and needing the warmth of a south-facing wall, is C. nepaulensis

This species has very beautiful creamy white flowers, about 2.5cm long, with long, protruding deep pink-purple anthers, over several weeks in early winter.

The little flowers are followed by large, fluffy seedheads. And then, startlingly, the whole plant loses its leaves.

It is deciduous in summer. If you can, plant it near the front door and every winter visitor will remark on such a very special clematis. They will want any seedlings you can offer.

Hundreds benefitting from Somerset-first breast cancer self-referral system

WOMEN with symptoms of breast cancer are taking advantage of a new self-referral system - and getting faster access to specialist care and reducing pressure on GP services.

The Somerset NHS Foundation Trust scheme launched on January 23, 2025, and since then a total of 866 people have self-referred directly to the breast diagnostic clinic, without the need for a GP appointment.

Of those, 48 have been diagnosed with cancer, with 34 progressing onto treatment, and 727 being identified as non-cancerous.

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust was the first in England to introduce the pathway, accessed via NHS 111 online and the NHS App.

An NHS spokesperson said: "It allows eligible patients with worrying symptoms, such as a breast lump, to be referred straight to a breast diagnostic clinic, speeding up cancer diagnosis and freeing up valuable GP appointments.

Plan, which focuses on earlier diagnosis and prevention."

Rosie Edgerley, cancer programme manager at the Trust, said: "The introduction of the self-referral system is a significant step forward in supporting people with breast symptoms.

"By enabling patients to bypass their GP and be referred directly for specialist assessment, we are helping them to be seen more quickly during what can be an anxious

and worrying time.

"This new pathway means patients get the reassurance or treatment they need sooner, while also easing pressure on our GP colleagues."

people with concerning breast symptoms that will allow them to be assessed by the specialist team at the earliest opportunity.

"For most people referred, we will be able to reassure them that their symptoms are not related to breast cancer.

"There will, sadly, be some people who do have breast cancer, and for them, the 111 online referral route could result in an earlier diagnosis of breast cancer, which is something we always strive for.

"We know that when a breast cancer is diagnosed early, it gives us the best opportunity for successful treatment of the disease."

Shaida Tanweer, a senior product manager at 111 online, said: "This is about using technology to make access simpler and safer. Patients get faster reassurance or diagnosis, while the NHS benefits from a more efficient pathway. It shows how digital-first services can deliver real change in cancer care."

and family history. In addition, some environmental factors such as alcohol consumption and smoking add to the risk of breast cancer.

Breast cancer symptoms can include:

n a lump, or swelling in your breast, chest or armpit

n a change in the skin of your breast, such as dimpling or redness

n a change in size or shape of one or both breasts

n nipple discharge (if you are not pregnant or breastfeeding), which may have blood in it

n a change in the shape or look of your nipple, such as it turning inwards or a rash on it

Breast lumps are very common and can be caused by other harmless conditions, and having some of these symptoms does not definitely mean a person has breast cancer.

"It’s also in line with the recently published NHS 10 Year

Miss Caroline Osborne, a consultant breast surgeon, added: "This is a very exciting new self-referral pathway for

One in seven women in the UK develop breast cancer during their lifetime, and it’s more common in older women. Risk factors include age, weight

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, Cancer Research UK says, with about 55,500 women and 370 men diagnosed in the UK each year.

In the UK, from the age of 50, women with no obvious symptoms are invited for a mammogram every three years.
