Welcome from Debbie Hamlett
February is the month of love, and we’ll happily admit it—we love our members! <big hug>
We love your curiosity and the way you show up for Milwaukee PBS week after week.
Your continued support keeps Milwaukee PBS strong, creative, and connected to the community we serve. Because of you, we’re able to bring programs into your home that inform, surprise, and sometimes even help you see the world a little differently.
This month’s lineup blends trusted favorites—from ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL to ANTIQUES ROADSHOW—with new offerings that share that same spirit of exploration and discovery.
BESSIE COLEMAN: QUEEN OF THE SKIES
Before iconic aviators like Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh captured imaginations, there was Bessie Coleman. Widely regarded as the first woman of Native American and African American descent to obtain a pilot's license, Bessie has inspired many women to pursue their dreams. BESSIE COLEMAN: QUEEN OF THE SKIES details Bessie's struggle to overcome adversity and realize her dream to fly, becoming the first woman of color to earn her international pilot's license despite the gender and racial discrimination of the 1920s.

BLACK & JEWISH IN AMERICA, hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., takes a thoughtful look at identity and history while exploring the deep, complex, and often challenging relationship between Black and Jewish Americans.
NOVA: CAN DOGS TALK? is a fascinating dive into the science of how dogs communicate with us. You’ll witness astonishing moments that challenge assumptions about animal intelligence, from dogs that appear to engage in conversation to those who learn new words with remarkable speed.
For mystery lovers, BOOKISH is a charming British series set in post-war London, following eccentric antiquarian bookseller Gabriel Book as he uses his literary knowledge— and a healthy dose of empathy—to solve baffling crimes. And closer to home, don’t miss the powerful local documentary A FULLER EDUCATION. It tells the story of Howard Fuller, a civil rights leader who became superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools, and whose relentless pursuit of educational equity led him to build unlikely alliances in service of poor and working-class families.
These are the kinds of programs that spark reflection, conversation, and connection—and they’re possible because of you. They remind us why public media matters, and why Milwaukee PBS remains a place where curiosity and community meet.
With appreciation,
Debbie Hamlett Vice President and General Manager

On the LOCAL SCENE
A FULLER EDUCATION
Dr. Howard Fuller is in the fight of his life, a warrior in what he calls one of the most crucial social justice issues of our time: the racial inequities in American education. A civil rights leader who became the superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools, Fuller has seen what works—and what doesn’t. From Black Power advocate to education reformer, Fuller’s life experiences qualify him to speak to the issues of our day with an insight few can match. What separates Fuller from many others is his willingness to make unlikely allies and adversaries in his relentless pursuit of educational progress for poor and working class families. Challenging the educational establishment did not make him popular in some political and educational circles. But popularity was not his goal. “Until my time runs out, I will spend my days launching rescue missions, trying to save as many kids as I can, often as I can, no matter how hard the struggle.”

Did you know Milwaukee is home to the longest running mandolin orchestra in the world? Founded in 1900 the Milwaukee Mandolin Orchestra's mission has been to advance and sustain the tradition of the versatile stringed instrument. As they celebrated their 125th anniversary, Sandy Maxx sat down with their President, Fred Pike and music director, Rene Izqueirdo (conducting), to learn more about what makes the mandolin so special and how the orchestra has endured for over a century.

Black and Jewish America: An Interwoven History With Henry Louis
Gates Jr. Premieres February 3
Stream with the PBS App
The Series Explores the Rich and Complex Relationship Between Black Americans and Jewish Americans Throughout History
BLACK AND JEWISH AMERICA: AN INTERWOVEN HISTORY, a new four-part docuseries, explores the complex relationship between Black Americans and Jewish Americans – forged in shared struggle, tested by division, and representing a uniquely American experience. From executive producer, host, and writer Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the series premieres February 3 at 8PM on Milwaukee PBS, and the PBS app.
Black and Jewish Americans began on fundamentally different footing, but by the early 20th century, they were drawn together by entrenched racism and rising antisemitism. These shared experiences led to productive civic partnerships and sparked creative bonds that led to collaborations in music and film that would profoundly shape American popular culture. The relationship between these
communities deepened after World War II, when the atrocities of the Holocaust came to light, reinforcing a sense of common struggle as both communities grappled with the devastating consequences of hatred and intolerance. The civil rights era is often described as the “golden age” of the alliance, when Jewish Americans worked closely with Black leaders and organizers to dismantle Jim Crow segregation.
While shared ideals of justice united Black and Jewish people, they were also divided by the realities of race in America. The historic alliance suffered as each group turned inward, prioritizing its own struggles and agendas in an increasingly fragmented social and political landscape. Still, the hope and promise of cross-cultural solidarity endures to this day, amid constant reminders of the persistent threat of
violence and injustice in the world. BLACK AND JEWISH AMERICA offers a lesson in fulfilling that promise while confronting the challenges of maintaining unity against divisiveness.
In BLACK AND JEWISH AMERICA, Gates, the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard University and director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research, speaks with dozens of scholars, activists, religious leaders, and writers about the kinship between the two groups, defined by powerful moments of solidarity and painful episodes of division. Notable participants include Billy Crystal, Tony Kushner, Anna Deavere Smith, Al Sharpton, David Remnick, the children of noted civil rights figures Rev. Ralph Abernathy, Rabbi Abraham Joshua, Rabbi Israel Dresner, and more.

PINKALICIOUS AND PETERRIFIC: CUPID CALLS IT QUITS
It's Valentine's Day in Pinkville, and Pinkalicious can't wait to make valentines for her class party. But, when Pinkalicious and Peter befriend the Cupid, he offers them a trade: he'll become a real kid and join Pinkalicious's class, while Pinkalicious becomes Cupid for the day and delivers valentines to everyone (with Peter as her trusted assistant)! Things seem pinkatastic until Pinkalicious and Peter run out of Cupid's "LoveIs-In-The-Air" spray. How will they be able to spread love across Pinkville?

The new show, follows the adventures of curiously charismatic 6-year-old fraternal twins, Phoebe and Jay Yarber, highlighting a variety of texts that preschoolers encounter in their daily lives–from labels and signs to posters and more–to foster their early literacy skills and help them navigate the world around them.
“Every year, 40% of children enter kindergarten with literacy skills one to three years behind their grade level, creating a difficult gap for them to overcome,” said Sara DeWitt, Senior Vice President and General Manager, PBS KIDS. “We hope that PHOEBE & JAY’s relatable characters, fun, family-centered stories, and foundational curriculum will help equip young viewers with the everyday literacy skills they need to find success in school and in life.”
PHOEBE & JAY’s literacy curriculum is designed to support preschoolers as they learn how to create and use functional texts they encounter each day. As the twins uncover adventures in their new home, they use a flyer to help a neighbor find a lost pet and read clothing labels to find the right size shirt. Young viewers discover how they can utilize these skills to accomplish tasks.
In addition, Phoebe & Jay’s Dance Party game will debut on pbskids.org and the PBS KIDS Games app along with the series launch. Players will help the twins get ready for themed dance parties by finding inspiration at the Pass-It-On table, making posters, sorting party outfits by size, dressing up, and learning special dance moves. Additional games will roll out in both English and Spanish. Resources for parents and teachers will be available on PBS KIDS for Parents and PBS LearningMedia.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: Allyson Olivier
Longtime member and volunteer pledge program host values a “life of learning” with Milwaukee PBS
Iwas born and raised in the northwest side of Milwaukee and have resided in Port Washington for the past 30 years. I am married, with two adult sons, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. I am an alumna of the UWMilwaukee School of Social Welfare. My career has focused on supporting disenfranchised individuals in the greater Milwaukee area.
As a dedicated viewer and supporter, I quickly realized the immense importance of Milwaukee PBS to my family and the wider community. My children enjoyed shows like BARNEY, TELETUBBIES, MR. RODGERS NEIGHBORHOOD, and CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG, and now my great-grandchild watches programs such as PBS Kids - ODD SQUAD, WILD KRATTS, ALMA’S WAY, and others.
While my husband and I often have different viewing preferences, we both agree that public television offers the most diverse range of quality programming available. We are equally entertained by the latest musicals and captivated by incredible science, history, and more. Milwaukee PBS is our trusted, reliable source for quality content. I have been a sustaining member, contributing monthly without interruption, for over 30 years. Supporting Milwaukee PBS is a rewarding experience. I feel good about contributing to an educational and entertainment institution that provides so much value to me. Furthermore, I support public television for all those who cherish quality programming but may not have the means to invest, ensuring seniors, youth, and those on tight budgets can also benefit from what Milwaukee PBS has to offer.
I cannot overstate how often the science programs have completely astounded me with the information I have learned. My first memory of this wonderful resource dates back to my childhood when the television was wheeled into my classroom so we could learn Spanish. Today, I am still learning thanks to public broadcasting.
Thank you, Milwaukee PBS, for enriching my life and the lives of those around me!
