This month on NATURE, BECOMING
ELEPHANT: THE ORPHANS OF RETETI follows the rescue, rehabilitation, and eventual release of orphaned baby elephants at the first community-owned, community-run elephant sanctuary in Kenya. Watching these adorable babies recover and grow is inspiring—have the tissues ready!
OUR NEW WORLD, a two-part special, explores nature’s astonishing ability to adapt and the ways humans can help ecosystems thrive. Viewers will witness remarkable transformations, including in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, where time-lapse photography reveals the birth of an ecosystem emerging from once-frozen land.

As the Graham Company nears its landmark 100th anniversary, WE ARE OUR TIME offers a rare behind-the-scenes portrait of the company, exploring Graham’s legacy through the dancers who embody her work today. For over three years Partisan Pictures embedded within the dance company, filming from rehearsal to premiere, across a global tour, and at home with family.
Part 2, 4/3 at 8PM 36.1
SHARED PLANET, an acclaimed four-part series highlights hopeful and innovative examples of people and wildlife coexisting. From farming practices that welcome bats to urban environments that support wildlife—and communities living alongside lions in Kenya—incredible stories of balance between people and the natural world.
History comes to life in LUCY WORSLEY INVESTIGATES: THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. In this two-part special, Lucy Worsley explores the conflict from the British perspective, examining the espionage, political missteps, and radical ideas that led to the birth of the United States—and how losing America reshaped Britain.
CROSSROADS OF A NATION: MISSOURI’S RHYTHM, ROADS & ROOTS traces Missouri’s journey from Civil War battleground to a center of modernization and civil rights. The program explores how Reconstruction, the development of highways, and the civil rights movement intersected in one state to reflect the story of a divided yet evolving nation.
It’s hard to imagine another place where you’d find such a wide range of insightful and engaging programs. Thank you for being part of a community that believes everyone should have access to media that is thoughtful and thought-provoking. You are an essential part of our success!

Despite the fact that immigrants contribute $23 billion per year to the Wisconsin economy, the Latino community is currently confronting a period of significant political hostility. To address this urgent situation, Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Director of Voces de la Frontera, provides a detailed overview of the upcoming May Day mobilization strategy and the initiative to consolidate community power.

Featuring the work of more than 15 local artists, Greenwood Park Gallery and Framing is a pillar of Milwaukee's art community. In an area that has been described as a "desert" for some resources such as grocery stores or pharmacies, Greenwood Park has been a staple of the Sherman Park neighborhood for over 2 decades. That's thanks to Fred Robinson, owner of Greenwood Park, and his passion for art and connecting with others. Sandy Maxx interviews Fred and learns why he is determined to uplift Milwaukee's artists.

COVER STORY:

Wednesday, April 8 at 7PM on Channel 10.1

Inthe remote wilds of northern Kenya, follow the remarkable journey of orphaned elephants at Reteti, the first community-owned elephant sanctuary in Africa. Raised by Samburu keepers who act as surrogate parents, these elephants, many rescued from poaching, drought, or human-wildlife conflict, are nurtured back to health and prepared for life in the wild.
From tiny calves taking their first bottle to older elephants facing release, the two-part series captures intimate moments of struggle, healing, and transformation. Meet characters like Long’uro, a calf who lost his trunk to a hyena attack, and Kelele, whose illness nearly derails
his future. Alongside the elephants, the series also tells the story of the local community, especially the women known as “milk mamas,” whose care, knowledge, and resilience are reshaping conservation from the ground up.
“From first bottle feeds to final releases, we wanted to tell the story of coexistence in conservation,” said producer and director Nicola Tremain. “The Samburu keepers at Reteti care for their young animal charges as if they were their own children yet ultimately must release them back to the wild where they belong. It’s a powerful story of healing, hope and the ancient bond between people and wildlife.”

Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22
Young children have a lot to teach us grown-ups about caring for our planet. As I watch my four kids grow, I marvel at their innate curiosity and genuine care for living things. Kids are never too young to appreciate nature and care for their communities by tending to the environment.
What better way to help your children foster an empathetic relationship with our planet — than by celebrating Earth Day together with some fun activities?
Whether you opt to embark on a nature walk or get crafty with an eco-activity at home, we’ve rounded up some kid-approved games, crafts, and activities to help your family learn how to be responsible, empathetic neighbors who take care of the earth.
Feed the birds. With common household items, you can help your child create a bird feeder that birds will be chirping about! While you’re crafting, ask your child to describe different birds that they’ve seen in your neighborhood. What color are the birds? What sorts of chirping sounds they make.
Get composting! What happens to a pile of old leaves outside when you add a dash of time, maybe some worms, and a healthy splash of moisture? Celebrate Earth Day by making soil perfect for a garden.
Create a nature journal. Observing wildlife is a wonderful way for children to practice patience and develop skills in noticing details. An animal observation journal is a great way to keep a record of the amazing animals you observe where you live and for sharing those observations with others.
Ready, set, grow. Learn about the basics of botany and plant growth by growing a simple herb garden with your child. Then, browse through these seed-filled reads and explore the outdoors through books. – Kayla Craig

Arnold

Iam an archaeologist specializing in pre-Roman Iron Age Europe and a Full Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I have an eclectic range of interests, including how alcoholic beverages served as a social lubricant in ancient societies, how the way people buried their dead can tell us about their belief systems and their social structure, including the evolution of gender configurations, and how archaeology has been used and abused by political systems ever since the first collections of artifacts were established by early antiquarians.
I am a first-generation immigrant – my parents came to the US from Germany in the early 1960s – and we watched MASTERPIECE THEATER together every Sunday. NATURE was another favorite and National Geographic programming related to archaeology definitely contributed to my choosing the study of the past as a career path. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find programming that is reliable and thought-provoking as well as entertaining – the lineup that Milwaukee PBS provides informs, educates and takes us on journeys to other times and places and it has done that reliably for decades. Making sure PBS is there for the next generation is important to me and to my husband, Homer Hruby.
I feel strongly that those of us who can afford to do so have an obligation to provide support for programming that speaks truth to power, that keeps us informed without sugarcoating what is happening in the world around us and that can also be a source of truly exceptional family entertainment. PBS does all of that and more.

The documentary explores the life and legacy of the first African American to achieve national fame as a writer. Born to former slaves in Dayton, Ohio, Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906) is best remembered for his poem "We Wear the Mask" and for lines from "Sympathy," which inspired the title of Maya Angelou's famous autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." Dunbar's story mirrors the African American experience around the turn of the century.
