World Economic Situation and Prospects 2026

United Nations

Geopolitical risks, continuing policy uncertainty, and fiscal challenges cloud the global economic outlook.

The World Economic Situation and Prospects 2026 is a report produced by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), in partnership with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and five United Nations regional commissions: the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The report will present a regional and global economic outlook for 2026 and underscore the importance of global cooperation and prudent policies to lift global growth and accelerate progress towards the SDGs. Heated competition for critical minerals is preying on weak governance and social cohesion, driving uncertainty and division across affected communities. And rising military expenditure is diverting scarce resources away from social spending, as countries spend more on instruments of war than on investments in peace.

Regional Human Development Report for Latin America and the Caribbean 2025

Under Pressure: Recalibrating the Future of Development in Latin America and the Caribbean

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)’s 2025 Regional Human Development Report for Latin America and the Caribbean, Under Pressure: Recalibrating the Future of Development in LAC, examines how the region faces a new era of uncertainty shaped by recurrent crises, technological acceleration, social fragmentation, and climate challenges. These dynamics have exposed the structural vulnerabilities that undermine the sustainability of progress. In response, the Report calls for a paradigm shift: placing resilience at the core of development strategies, not as a byproduct but as a guiding principle for public policies, institutions, and infrastructure. By advancing the concept of resilient human development, the report outlines a roadmap to protect and expand people’s freedoms, recognizing both individual and collective agency as essential for navigating uncertainty.

Review of Maritime Transport 2025 Staying the Course in Turbulent Waters UN

Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

In 2025, global maritime trade continues to navigate an environment marked by volatility, rerouted flows and uncertainty. Persistent geopolitical tensions and trade policy changes have altered shipping patterns, with many routes redirected away from traditional chokepoints. Maritime transport and trade face daunting challenges. Ships that once passed through the Red Sea in days now sail for weeks around the Cape of Good Hope. Freight rates are high and volatile. Port disruption is becoming chronic. Supply chain reliability and resilience are being put to the test. Longer routes have increased delays, costs, and emissions, with developing countries hit hard by the disruptions and uncertainty. Deep transitions are also reshaping the sector. Technological, environmental and geoeconomic shifts are converging at a speed that requires rethinking how maritime transport operates. Alternative fuel vessels now represent over half of the ship tonnage of new orders, yet over 90% of the active fleet still runs on conventional fuels. Automation and digitalization promise efficiency but also heighten cyber risks. How will adaptation be managed?

Addressing

High Food Price Inflation for Food Security and Nutrition

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)

This year’s report highlights how elevated inflation in many countries has undermined purchasing power and, especially among low-income populations, access to healthy diets. The report documents how high food price inflation is associated with increases in food insecurity and child malnutrition. In response to these challenges and to prevent future price shocks, the report examines policy measures adopted by countries, and outlines what is necessary going forward. It stresses the importance of coherent implementation of fiscal and monetary policies to stabilize markets, promote open and resilient trade, and protect vulnerable populations.

State of World Population 2025

The Real Fertility Crisis - The Pursuit of Reproductive Agency in a Changing World

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

In 2025, the global fertility rate is making headlines. In many countries, birth rates are declining, leading policymakers to sound the alarm over the potential for “population collapse”. In an attempt to mitigate the demographic changes, they face, some governments are employing drastic measures to persuade women to have more children. Despite this fact, millions of people around the world are unable to have the number of children they want. In every country, regardless of total fertility rate, the most consequential reproductive decision a human being can make – when, whether and with whom to have a child – is being undermined. UNFPA’s new State of World Population report argues that the real crisis we are facing is not a problem of demographic change: It is a crisis of reproductive agency.

Trade and Development Report 2025

On the Brink: Trade, Finance and Global Uncertainty UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

The Trade and Development Report (TDR), launched in 1981, is issued every year for the annual session of the Trade and Development Board. The Report analyses current economic trends and major policy issues of international concern, and makes suggestions for addressing these issues at various levels. On the surface, global trade looks resilient. Goods are moving, supply chains are adapting, and trade grew about 4% in early 2025 – even amid tariff hikes and geopolitical tensions. Over 90% of world trade now depends on trade finance. This means that banks, platforms that clear transactions and complex financial instruments like derivatives determine who can trade, on what terms and at what cost. Yet unlike trade, global finance remains highly concentrated – leaving much of the global South on the margins. The Trade and Development Report 2025 reveals how the tightening link between trade and finance is reshaping global opportunities –and why the stakes are greatest for developing countries.

World AIDS Day Report 2025

Overcoming Disruption: Transforming the AIDS Response

Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)

The 2025 funding crisis has thrown the AIDS response into turmoil with massive disruptions to HIV prevention and community-led services, particularly for the most vulnerable. Community-led services, vital to reaching marginalized populations, are being deprioritized while the rise in punitive laws criminalizing same-sex relationships, gender identity, and drug use is amplifying the crisis, making HIV services inaccessible. Abrupt reductions in international HIV assistance in 2025 have deepened existing funding shortfalls. The OECD estimates that external health assistance is projected to drop by 30–40% in 2025 compared with 2023, causing immediate and even more severe disruption to health services in low- and middle-income countries. Prevention services—already under strain before the crisis— have been hit hardest. A failure to reach the 2030 global HIV targets of the next Global AIDS Strategy could result in an additional 3.3 million new HIV infections between 2025 and 2030. However, this report shows evidence that resilience, investment, and innovation combined with global solidarity, still offer a path to end AIDS.

Food Outlook - Biannual Report on Global Food Markets (November 2025)

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)

Agricultural markets remain highly sensitive to a variety of external shocks, including weather fluctuations and policy developments, and merit regular monitoring. According to the latest FAO assessments, global food commodity production has broadly increased, supported by strong consumption growth and a recovery in inventories. However, the trade outlook continues to be clouded by an evolving global trade environment and persistent policy uncertainties. Beyond the core market assessments for major food commodities, each edition includes special feature articles and key market indicators. The November 2025 edition provides an update on the fertilizer market and recent developments in olive oil markets. The overview of market indicators summarizes trends in futures markets, ocean freight rates, the global food import bill, and food price indices.

Disarming with Story: How Survivor Stories Shape Nuclear Disarmament Work United Nations

Eighty years on, remembering matters more than ever. As the world marks eight decades since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the collective memory of that destruction is fading, even as new nuclear threats emerge. The voices of the Hibakusha (Japanese atomic bomb survivors) as well as other groups affected by nuclear weapons production and testing are a vital bridge to this history. A new UNODA civil society publication by Lovely Umayam explores how survivor stories endure amidst secrecy and forgetting — passed on through direct testimony, digital archives, storytelling, and visual art — so that their message of resilience and call for disarmament reach new generations.

United Nations Toolkit for the Evaluation of Crypto Tax Risks

United Nations

This toolkit provides a practical, structured framework for the identification and assessment of crypto tax risks. It has been developed by the United Nations Committee of Experts on International Cooperation in Tax Matters as a response to the rapid growth of the cryptoasset market and the increasing relevance of cryptoassets for tax systems. It addresses the risks that arise from transactions with cryptoassets in systems where most tax laws and systems were designed without cryptoassets and related transactions in mind. These risks may result in the erosion of the tax base. It is intended primarily for tax administrations, but it may also be useful for officials in related public institutions, researchers and other stakeholders working on the taxation of cryptoassets.

Managing Environmental Legacies in the Andean Mining Sector: Analysis, Challenges and Lessons Learned

United Nations

SDGs:

Extractive activities are considered an engine of economic growth in many countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, for this growth to be inclusive and sustainable, it is necessary to properly manage the pressures and risks, both past and future, that affect human health and the environment. This book provides an overview of the risks and damages associated with environmental liabilities and presents examples of economic activities that can generate a negative environmental legacy if carried out without robust regulations and institutional frameworks. It also analyses liability allocation mechanisms and proposes alternatives for financing the remediation of environmental liabilities. It proposes that remediation should be geared towards risk control and involve the community.

Towards Climate Resilient Transport Systems

United Nations

From 2020 to 2025, the UNECE Group of Experts on Assessment of Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation for Inland Transport studied how evolving climate conditions will affect transport systems across the region. Their findings underscore the urgent need to adapt infrastructure—such as roads, railways, ports, airports, and terminals—to withstand increasingly frequent and severe weather events. By 2050, many areas will face significantly higher risks due to rising temperatures, flooding, droughts, sea level rise, glacier melt, and permafrost thaw. These changes could cause widespread damage and disruption, threatening the movement of people, goods, and emergency aid. To address these challenges, a structured adaptation process is needed to assess current vulnerabilities, project future impacts, design resilience measures, and monitor progress.

Trade Facilitation Enquiry Points

Analysis and Best Practices for Operating Enquiry Points UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

In today’s complex global trade environment, many businesses - particularly micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and informal traders - face persistent barriers to participating in international trade. A major challenge is the lack of accessible, clear, and up-to-date information on import, export, and transit procedures. For smaller actors, navigating trade processes can be confusing, time-consuming, and costly, limiting their competitiveness and growth potential. The World Trade Organization’s Agreement on Trade Facilitation (WTO TFA) addresses this issue by emphasizing transparency. This study aims to support governments, trade officials, development partners, and the broader trading community in making transparency effective and inclusive.

Our Common Agenda: Report of the Secretary-General United Nations

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Member States came together to recognize that our challenges are interconnected and can be addressed only through reinvigorated multilateralism with the United Nations at the centre of our efforts. In response, the UN embarked on a process of reflection, engaging a broad array of stakeholders, including Member States, thought leaders, young people, civil society and the United Nations system and its many partners. This report provides a synthesis of key ideas that emerged during the reflection process and contains suggestions on how to take them forward. As COVID-19 has shown, our welfare, and indeed the permanence of human life, depend on us working together across borders and sectors to address major risks and achieve a set of vital common goals.

The United Nations Guide to Model UN United Nations

Model United Nations (MUN) simulations are popular exercises for those interested in learning more about the UN. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of students worldwide participate every year in MUN at all educational levels in schools and universities. Many of today’s leaders in law, government, business and the arts participated in MUN as students. Some MUNs however do not follow the actual rules and practices used at the UN. This guide is designed for students and teachers on how to organize and participate in MUNs that simulate the way the UN actually works.

SHARED LIVES, SHARED FUTURE

Whether you live in a mountain village in Afghanistan or in New York, on a small Pacific island or in Africa, in Estonia or in Brazil, the United Nations is part of your life in ways you might not expect.

Multilateralism — the idea that people and governments everywhere must work together — keeps the world functioning and helps us tackle global challenges together.

No matter who we are, we share one world. Our lives are connected, our challenges are mutual, and our future is intertwined. Only by valuing our common humanity and working for our shared destiny as one species on one planet, can we build a healthier, safer and more prosperous world — for ourselves and for generations to come.

#BuildingOurFutureTogether

The cover photos are part of the “Shared Lives, Shared Future” exhibition, highlighting the many ways in which the world’s most crucial international organization impacts all our daily lives: supporting peace and security, overseeing regulatory frameworks, providing humanitarian assistance and fostering development, facilitating international conventions on trade, or advancing human rights.
