Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV)
United Nations
This publication provides guidance for developing and implementing effective monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) practices—as well as for mitigating methane emissions—from the oil and gas sector. In its discussion on MRV and mitigation opportunities, it is meant to serve as a resource for a broad audience, including owners and operators of oil and gas facilities and policymakers at all levels of government. It is intentionally “principles-based”, recognizing that conditions vary greatly across oil and gas facilities, and that legal, political and institutional aspects differ by jurisdictions.

Integrated Life-cycle Assessment of Electricity Sources
United Nations
Well-informed energy policy design is key to reaching decarbonization targets and keeping global climate change under a 2°C threshold. In particular, lowcarbon electricity provision for all is essential, as the IPCC shows that the most ambitious climate mitigation scenarios entail the electrification of most of our economy. Understanding the full scale of potential impacts from current and future electricity generation is required, in order to avoid “impact leakage”increasing non-climate environmental pressure while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Life cycle assessment allows the evaluation of a product over its life cycle, and across a wide range of environmental indicators – this method was chosen here to report on the environmental profiles of various technologies.

The Low-carbon Transition and Its Daunting Implications for Structural Transformation
United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
This year’s Report highlights the development strategies and policies which LDCs need to enact to reach the ambitious objectives to which they have committed, and the painful trade-offs between climate action and accelerated progress towards fulfilling their right to development they will need. It shows that despite this harsh reality, international support for LDC adaptation and sustainable development has fallen remarkably short of what is needed. The Report calls on the international community to be mindful of the institutional and capacity constraints that create scope for maladaptation in LDCs and to enhance targeted assistance to LDCs in line with their need for special and differential treatment.

Opening Green Windows: Technological Opportunities for a Low-carbon World. United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
This report examines the opportunities and challenges posed by green innovation on the ability of developing countries to catch up, reduce inequalities and contribute to tackling climate change. It argues that green policies are key to create the windows of opportunities. At the same time, firms and governments must be ready to respond and take advantage of these opportunities. This requires sector-specific strategies and the support of the international community to empower developing countries to develop, use, adopt and adapt green technologies for sustainable development.

The Handbook presents a broad framework to classify and understand forms of employment, which is centered around two main dimensions: work relationships (as defined in the 2018 International Classification of Status in Employment) and work modalities (the way in which work is coordinated, performed, and compensated). To develop a full understanding of forms of employment, the Handbook provides definitions of the concepts of permanence and stability of employment. It also covers the broader context of forms of employment which includes person-level circumstances, social protection, and quality of employment to help better understand the impact of forms of employment on well-being. The Handbook provides definitions of key concepts, general principles and guidelines as well as a list of key recommended indicators with the goal of facilitating national statistical efforts to classify, measure and track diverse forms of employment relevant to their national context.

Continuing the thread of the 2019 and 2020 Human Development Reports (HDRs), the 2021/2022 HDR carries forward a conversation centered on inequalities while integrating other important themes related to uncertainties in the Anthropocene: societal-level transformations, mental health impacts, political polarization, but also, crucially, opportunity. The Report explores how uncertainty in the Anthropocene is changing, what is driving it, what it means for human development, and how we can thrive in spite of it. The Report argues that, in the end, doubling down on human development is central to a more prosperous future for all.

Connected Services, Competitive Businesses
International Trade Centre (ITC)
Our services sectors are key to economic transformation. Transport and logistics, financial services, information and communication technologies, and business and professional services contribute directly to economic growth –with an increasing share of output, trade and jobs. These sectors also contribute indirectly, making other firms more competitive by connecting them to global value chains and digital innovations. Yet most small firms in developing countries do not access them easily. This report explores the measures that companies, business support organizations and policymakers must take to help connected services flourish – to benefit all firms, foster more prosperous economies and build more inclusive societies.

Non-state Actors in Education: Who Chooses? Who Loses?
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Alongside its review of progress towards SDG 4—including emerging evidence on the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact—this year’s report urges governments to see all institutions, students and teachers as part of a single system. The report’s rallying call – Who chooses? Who loses? – invites policymakers to question relationships with non-state actors in terms of fundamental choices: between equity and freedom of choice; between encouraging initiative and setting standards; between groups of varying means and needs; between immediate commitments under SDG 4 and those to be progressively realized (e.g. post-secondary education); and between education and other social sectors.

This report analyses investment facilitation commitments for sustainable development within the context of the the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), the ASEAN Investment Facilitation Framework (AIFF), and the WTO Draft Investment Facilitation Framework for Development. While the potential role of foreign direct investment (FDI) in promoting sustainable development is well recognised, the report reveals that significant gaps exist in these instruments with respect to linkages between investment facilitation and sustainable development. In light of the gaps identified, the report puts forward a package of recommendations to help policymakers formulate FDI policies and guide investment promotion agencies (IPAs) to better promote and facilitate FDI for sustainable development.

Model United Nations (MUN) simulations are popular exercises for those interested in learning more about the UN. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of students worldwide participate every year in MUN at all educational levels in schools and universities. Many of today’s leaders in law, government, business and the arts participated in MUN as students. Some MUNs however do not follow the actual rules and practices used at the UN. This guide is designed for students and teachers on how to organize and participate in MUNs that simulate the way the UN actually works.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Member States came together to recognize that our challenges are interconnected and can be addressed only through reinvigorated multilateralism with the United Nations at the centre of our efforts. In response, the UN embarked on a process of reflection, engaging a broad array of stakeholders, including Member States, thought leaders, young people, civil society and the United Nations system and its many partners. This report provides a synthesis of key ideas that emerged during the reflection process and contains suggestions on how to take them forward. As COVID-19 has shown, our welfare, and indeed the permanence of human life, depend on us working together across borders and sectors to address major risks and achieve a set of vital common goals.
