The University hosts 22,000 students, 20% of them are from abroad. Every year, over 4,500 students graduate from its 12 faculties in agriculture, arts, business and administration, education, engineering, health and welfare, humanities, informatics, law, natural sciences and mathematics, social sciences, sport. Nobel Laureate Albert SzentGyörgyi (1893-1986) was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1937 for isolating vitamin C from Szeged paprika. Research professor Katalin Karikó (1955- ) received numerous prestigious prizes for her pioneering research on messenger RNA used in vaccines COVID-19. ELI-ALPS Laser Research Institute in Science Park Szeged with its 150 researchers and support staff is the first infrastructure in the world able to investigate the interactions between light and matter in the high-intensity ultra-relativistic range. The Science Park Szeged offers 65 hectares for its long-term potential partners who would like to take advantage of the local talent pool, the R&D culture and capability of the University, and would like to create their own R&D centre in the sunniest city of Hungary. The City of Szeged at the intersection of the borders of Hungary, Romania and Serbia is the third most populated city in Hungary, an important economic, scientific and cultural centre, and a Europe Prize Winner City. Katalin Karikó and the mRNA vaccines
Katalin Karikó, honorary doctor, research professor and Alumna of the University of Szeged received numerous prestigious medical prizes for the discovery of specific RNA modification. She began studying RNA at the University of Szeged and the Szeged Biological Research Centre at a time when it was largely considered uninteresting as a therapeutic molecule, but her dedication over the past three decades helped bringing mRNA vaccines to the world. Her achievements emphasize the importance of basic research.
Albert Szent-Györgyi & Vitamin C Nobel Laureate and one-time Rector of the University of Szeged, Albert Szent-Györgyi received the Nobel Prize in 1937 for his discoveries in connection with the biological combustion process with special reference to vitamin C and the catalysis of fumaric acid. He also recognized that Szeged paprika contained more of the substance hexuronic acid (i.e. vitamin C) than citrus fruits. The University of Szeged is committed to preserving the scientific heritage of Albert Szent-Györgyi.
