Albert Szent-Györgyi & Vitamin C Nobel Laureate and one-time Rector of the University of Szeged, Albert Szent-Györgyi received the Nobel Prize in 1937 for his discoveries in connection with the biological combustion process with special reference to vitamin C and the catalysis of fumaric acid. He also recognized that Szeged paprika contained more of the substance hexuronic acid (i.e. vitamin C) than citrus fruits. The University of Szeged is committed to preserving the scientific heritage of Albert Szent-Györgyi.

Katalin Karikó & the mRNA vaccines Katalin Karikó, awardee of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is an honorary doctor, Research professor and Alumna of the University of Szeged. She received the Nobel Prize jointly with her colleague, Drew Weissman “for their discoveries concerning base modifications that enabled the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19”. Katalin Karikó began studying RNA at the University of Szeged and the Szeged Biological Research Centre at a time when it was largely considered uninteresting as a therapeutic molecule, but her dedication over the past three decades helped bringing mRNA vaccines to the world. Her achievements emphasize the importance of basic research.

RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT & INNOVATION T
he University of Szeged is a center of research, development and innovation (R&D&I) excellence. The institution is an officially recognized research university, with 2200+ instructors and other scholars actively involved in national and international research projects. Numerous of these projects are conducted in the Szeged Biological Research Centre, in the SzentGyörgyi Albert Medical Center and in the ELI-ALPs Laser Research Center (Extreme Light Infrastructure – Attosecond Light Pulse Source). ELI-ALPs’ world-class equipment is the first infrastructure in the world capable of investigating the interactions between light and matter with the highest intensity, in the so-called ultra-relativistic range.
The Hungarian Centre of Excellence for Molecular Medicine (HCEMM) is working on research and development related to healthy ageing. For the administration of the HCEMM program, HCEMM Kft. was incorporated by the Biological Research Center Szeged (BRC), the Semmelweis University in Budapest and the University of Szeged (SZTE). The European Molecular Biological Laboratory (EMBL)

functions as the advanced partner of HCEMM. In addition to the initial E.U. Teaming Grant that led to the creation of HCEMM, the Centre of Excellence has also received National Laboratory status in Hungary in 2020. PhD studnets of SZTE may participate in on educational programs and international cooperations for the members of the research groups.

The European University Alliance for Global Health (EUGLOH) brings together nine universities from across Europe. Combining their outstanding expertise in Global Health, EUGLOH will build the European University of the future. All students of the University of Szeged have the opportunity to visit the other EUGLOH Alliance partner institutions with short- and long-term Erasmus mobilities, and participate in various courses, workshops and events in order to deepen their knowledge, improve their skills, explore other cultures and widen their international network.

Zsuzsa Kecsmár, founding member and marketing manager of Antavo, a startup dealing with customer loyalty programs, says learning never ends, the market changes fast at a breakneck speed therefore students just should go for it! “There will never be a good time to start a business, you can always find excuses as to why you shouldn't do it. It's not “rocket science”, you just have to do it, and you're done.” She encourages all graduating university students to start building their startups as soon as they leave the university. As she says “An idea is nothing in itself; the point is the implementation.”

Tamás Molnár Dr.
He is a member of CIFAR AI in Canada, head of DeepMind's “Foundations” team, and Professor of Computer Science at the University of Alberta. He obtained a Master's Degree in Mathematics and Computer Science in 1993 and a Ph.D. degree in 1999 at the Faculty of Science and Informatics of SZTE. In addition to regularly publishing in top-level journals and presenting at conferences, he is also the (co)author of several books. He currently serves as Operations Editor of the Journal of Machine Learning Research and Associate Editor of Mathematics of Operations Research. His main research area is artificial intelligence and its machine learning-based approaches.
Tamás Molnár is one of the icons of Hungarian water polo. A three-time Olympic champion says success comes at a price. The former student of the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences has travelled the world. Yet he can't and won't forget the pool, the water, the love of the audience, neither his smallest nor his biggest success. The knowledge he gained at the Faculty of Law in Szeged helped him to understand and accept that in most areas of life we are forced to adapt to change and to think and act in different systems. These are usually tied to rules, as in the case of water polo: there are no results without following the rules.

Assisting Students in Szeged Mentoring Centre The Mentoring Centre for International Students has been established at the University of Szeged to help the students in their everyday lives. It is located in the University Main building at Dugonics square. It’s open every day, and mentors of ESN Szeged are guiding enrolled students about their academic and everyday life in Szeged. The coordinators of the Directorate for International Relations and Public Affairs are also available for enquires.

Erasmus Student Network ESN Mentors, as members of a non-governmental, volunteerbased student organisation in Europe, are volunteers who help foreign scholarship students settling down in Szeged. In cooperation with the University, they help newly arrived students starting their academic and social life at SZTE and Szeged. ESN and their events bring international students closer to the local community, and last but not least, they make friends with them, all in order to provide opportunities for cultural understanding and selfdevelopment under the principle of students helping students and to build a more peaceful and unified Europe of tomorrow.

One thing I always look for in a university is where its located – a small, beautiful student friendly city, with everything close by and this was the case with Szeged which made it an ideal fit for me. The admissions process was also marked by warmth from the staff. As a student of the SZTE I got the chance to meet people from different countries and cultures through the Universities international programs like Erasmus, IFMSA, IISMA and various festivals. We also have the option to learn additional languages, which I’ve enjoyed. SZTE has given me a solid foundation and a wellstructured path to being the best physician I can be. I’ve been able to work with some excellent professors who are very happy to help in various manners – research, additional clinical or surgical exposure, especially once you show an interest. The important life lessons of time management, resilience and above all, re-strategizing & picking yourself up when things don’t go as planned have been emphasized throughout my medical school journey. It’s a journey filled with growth and memories.
Studying abroad was one of the biggest goals that I’ve ever made. I decided to choose the University of Szeged as my study destination because SZTE was a prestigious institution that offered a perfect blend of academic excellence with the diversity of cultures of international students and also provided a lot of research opportunities for students. Szeged Open-Air Festival The Szeged Open-Air Festival is Hungary's largest open-air theatre (4,000 seats) and one of the most entertaining summer theatre festivals in Central Europe. The festival is held annually over two summer months and offers a unique variety of genres even among European theatre festivals. Participants can choose from opera, operetta, musical, prose and symphonic music. The main venue of the festival is the emblematic square of the city, the Dóm Square.
Szeged City of Festivals The festival season of Szeged, starts at the second weekend of March with the Pork and Pálinka Festival and ends with Christmas Festive Weeks, when Szeged takes on its festive lights. We highlighted some of the city events SZTE students like the most.
Szeged Wine Festival The Szeged Wine Festival is one of the biggest wine festivals in Hungary, held every year in mid-May. It is the most popular event in the city. Around 160 winemakers come from all over the country to promote the best of their products. Besides, there are several concerts, cultural events and family programmes to entertain the visitors.

ICE The International Cultural Evening (ICE for short) is a nationality festival for the students of the University of Szeged. The main focus of the event is to highlight the diversity of the international student community at SZTE. During the event international students perform national music and dance in a cultural show. In addition, visitors can taste a variety of traditional food prepared by students in advance.
SZIN The Szeged Youth Days (SZIN for short) is the oldest music festival in Hungary and one of the most exciting events in Szeged. The summer festival has been held in Szeged every August since 1968 and it attracts more and more visitors every year. Festival-goers can enjoy the performances of professional artists, including international superstars, on several stages.

SZTE Autumn Cultural Festival with Light Painting The SZTE Cultural Office organises the university's cultural life, coordinates the work of artists and art groups, cultivates cultural relations within the university and between the university and the city and organises cultural events. One of its most prominent events is the Autumn Cultural Festival, which usually starts with the fascinating Light Painting.
