Charles A. O’Neill, Ph.D., D.A.B.T. ’85
CEO and Chair, MCAL Therapeutics, Inc.
Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters
Charles “Chuck” O’Neill, Ph.D., is a biotech leader with a 30-year track record of translating scientific innovation into therapies, contributing to 19 product approvals across ophthalmology, oncology, orthopedic, cardiovascular, neurological, and rare metabolic genetic diseases. In 2020, he co-founded MCAL Therapeutics to reimagine lipid-based therapeutics for ocular and mucosal surface diseases.
He spent two decades at BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc., advancing rare disease programs from discovery to clinic, and contributing to 10 first-in-class product approvals. He also co-founded SARcode BioSciences, Inc., where he led the nonclinical development of Xiidra®, an approved treatment for inflammatory dry eye. He spent nearly a decade at Genentech Inc., where he co-led the nonclinical development of Lucentis®, the anti-VEGF therapy for age-related macular degeneration, and contributed to the advancement of seven additional approved medicines, including Avastin™ for the treatment of various cancers and TNKase™ for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke. He began his career at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine.
Chuck holds a Ph.D. in Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology from the University of California, Davis, and a B.S. from the University of Redlands. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology, co-inventor on 26 U.S. patents, and has co-authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications.

Commencement Speaker
Taylor Whaley is graduating summa cum laude from the University of Redlands with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a minor in Psychology. Originally from Olympia, Washington, she graduated from Olympia High School in 2023, where she was a varsity athlete in basketball and volleyball while earning her Associate of Arts degree through the Running Start program.
At Redlands, Taylor continued her athletic career as a member of the Women’s Basketball team and currently plays Flag Football. She also worked as a tutor in the University’s tutoring center. In 2025, she was selected as the Outstanding Senior of the Year in Business Administration and named to the Dean’s List every semester.
Taylor gained professional experience through an internship with the WNBA Los Angeles Sparks and developed a strong interest in the business side of professional sports. She also founded TW Thrifts in 2021, building and managing a resale business focused on curated fashion while gaining hands-on experience in entrepreneurship, branding, and operations.
Following graduation, Taylor plans to pursue a career with a professional sports organization while continuing to grow as a business owner. She also intends to further her education by earning a Master of Business Administration in the near future. Taylor is honored to represent her class and is grateful for the support of her family, teammates, coaches, peers, professors, and Redlands faculty who have been part of her journey.
