OUR HOUSE

A 2026 showcase of University of Redlands scholars, authors, and artists

DEAR UNIVERSITY OF REDLANDS FACULTY AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS,

The Our House tradition was inspired by a celebration of what it means to work as a professor penned by our beloved colleague, Art Svenson, who has served as David Boies Professor of Government and University of Redlands faculty member in the Political Science department for more than four decades. Art’s invocation of “our house” as a space of wonder and discovery through learning stands as true today as it ever has.

This Our House compilation documents some, but not all, of the scholarly and creative accomplishments produced by University of Redlands faculty and staff, as well as our new colleagues at Woodbury University, between November 2024 and October 2025. I remain humbled by the contributions you have all made to the life of our academic community through your research, scholarly, and creative activities, enriching both the learning experiences of our students as well as the broader knowledge communities you sustain.

Please accept my congratulations on these past accomplishments and my deep appreciation for your ongoing commitment to the work of discovery and to nurturing it in our students, as the researchers and creative practitioners of the future.

With gratitude,

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, University of Redlands

OUR HOUSE 2026

A Tribute to Art Svenson

David Boies Endowed Chair of Government

For over 40 years, Art Svenson has lived and articulated—to his students, colleagues, and collaborators—a simple truth: that the University of Redlands is not merely an institution but a home where minds gather, ideas flourish, and communities form around shared intellectual purpose. It is fitting that we honor him here at Our House, the very event he helped create as an embodiment of this philosophy.

Art’s scholarly work has never shied from the most profound questions we face as a society. His research reflects a willingness to engage with both legal complexity and human dignity. Through decades of publications and distinguished teaching exchanges abroad, including Fulbright appointments and later visiting professorships in China, he brought rigorous analysis to questions that matter deeply not only to courts and legislatures but to families facing impossible choices.

As an educator, Art’s devotion to students is legendary. His May Term courses in Salzburg, his imaginative first-year seminars, and his Constitutional Law classes have inspired countless careers in law, politics, and academia. In a testament to the doors he opened and the confidence he instilled, his graduates have gone on to study at Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Chicago, Columbia, and many other esteemed institutions.

Yet Art has never been defined solely by a single discipline. As a violinist with the Redlands Symphony, San Bernardino Symphony, and Riverside County Philharmonic, he has lived the integration of arts and intellect that defines the best of liberal arts education.

The honors tell their own story: the APSA Distinguished Teaching Award, two Fulbright Scholarships, the Mortar Board Professor of the Year (three times), and multiple Outstanding Teaching Awards. But those of us who know Art understand that his greatest gift has been his presence—in the classroom, in faculty deliberations, and in countless moments when he made Redlands truly feel like our shared intellectual home.

Thank you, Art, for 44 years of building that home with us.
