Seth earns his master’s degree
When Air National Guard Member Seth Porter enrolled at UNH College of Professional Studies (UNH), he joined the first class to transition from Granite State College (GSC) into UNH. Having just completed his bachelor’s degree in operations management, he experienced how a personalized online model could be strengthened by access to the resources of the state’s flagship research university. That transition marked an institutional milestone and the beginning of Seth’s next academic and professional chapter.
Seth graduated from Granite State College summa cum laude after nearly two decades of accumulated coursework, certifications, and professional training. His path to completion began years earlier when he explored liberal arts, conservation biology, and business programs, worked full-time in skilled trades and later in supervisory roles. Joining the Air National Guard reset his education clock, again, immersing him in technical schooling, leadership development, and professional military education.
Like many adult learners, Seth never lacked motivation. He lacked a flexible structure to accommodate real life. Balancing military service, career growth, and family responsibilities made traditional classroom schedules unrealistic. The selfpaced, online model at GSC allowed him
to make progress without putting the rest of his life on hold.
“A more traditional class setting would not have allowed me to succeed,” Seth explains. “By committing to early mornings, maintaining consistent routines, and leaning on the support of my family, I found a sustainable balance between work, service, health, and education.”
Coursework happened before sunrise, during lunch breaks, and after his children, Lucas and Hailey, were asleep. Audiobooks filled commute time. Weekends required careful planning. Success depended on discipline, communication, and integrating college courses into daily life rather than separating it from everything else.
With a career spanning technical services management, aircraft maintenance, and operations leadership, pursuing a master’s in project management (MSPM) was a natural evolution for Seth. Although he does not formally hold the title of project manager, much of his work at the owneroperated Stanley Elevator Company is
project-based. In an organization where large initiatives and cross-functional collaboration are common, mastering the tools and language of project management offers relevance. As Seth describes,
“Understanding the processes, methods, and language of project management helped me thrive in an organization where much of the work is collaborative and project-based.”
He began applying frameworks, templates, and planning tools directly to his work, improving organization across initiatives. The shared language of project management also gave him greater confidence contributing to complex, multiyear efforts.
Throughout the program, Seth prioritized habits that sustained his focus: protecting family time, maintaining physical and mental health, and using digital tools efficiently. Seth notes,
“Education doesn’t require stepping away from life. It requires learning how to integrate it.”
Leadership and organizational behavior coursework further shaped his experience, strengthening his approach to communication, adaptability, and team dynamics. He credits several faculty members for influencing his journey, including Karen White, Arti Varshney, Michelle Newsome, Keith Wade, and Caroline Groves, whose passion for teaching and professional experience grounded theory in practice.
Service remains central to Seth’s life. In addition to reenlisting in the Air National Guard and retraining as a logistics planner, he volunteers with the Hillsborough Area Renewable Energy Initiative (HAREI), a New Hampshire–based nonprofit focused on implementing sustainable energy practices for homeowners. He also supports youth programs such as Scouts. These commitments reflect a guiding principle he applies as an employee, parent, and community member: service above self.
Seth’s capstone project became a meaningful culmination of his studies. Drawing on his volunteer work with HAREI, Seth designed, permitted, and managed the construction of a multipurpose pavilion at his home to support a solar energy installation. The project required stakeholder management (his wife, Tiffany, above all), budgeting, scheduling, contractor coordination, permitting, and system commissioning. Despite challenges including shifting timelines and a New Hampshire winter, the project delivered renewable energy, functional space, and long-term value for his family. As Seth describes,
“I use the tools and frameworks from my degree program every day. My capstone wasn’t theoretical. It was a real project with real risks, real stakeholders, and real outcomes. Applying what I learned to a project my family will benefit from made the experience incredibly meaningful.”
Graduating with a 4.0 GPA was a significant milestone, particularly after a nontraditional academic journey. As the first in his immediate family to earn a master’s degree, Seth views the accomplishment not as an endpoint, but as an example for his children:
“The best thing we can do for our children is show them anything is possible when we put in the work.”
Seth began his journey seeking advancement and stability for the people he loves. What he found was a community that respected prior learning, faculty who challenged and supported him, and an academic framework that strengthened the leadership and service he already valued.
Whether helping with homework at the kitchen table, attending activities, or encouraging curiosity and service, education is not separate from fatherhood; it is an essential part of it.

Jennifer Hammond brings a uniquely well-rounded perspective to her role as a faculty member at UNH College of Professional Studies. An alumna, current student, and educator, she has experienced UNH from nearly every angle including on campus, online, and as a working professional. With a career rooted in customer service, IT project management, and technical leadership, Jen is deeply committed to lifelong learning and to helping adult learners succeed by balancing technical expertise with human-centered leadership.
Meet Jennifer
How does being an alumna influence the way you teach and mentor students?
I’m always going to be a student myself. My diverse academic and professional experiences help me understand different perspectives, challenges, and motivations. I’m currently still a student at UNH CPS, and I lead with curiosity and compassion in my teaching because that’s what I value most as a learner.
What does the mission of UNH College of Professional Studies mean to you?
Having been a residential student, a commuter, and an online learner, I truly understand the value of flexible education. Technology allows us to learn and teach from anywhere, and I’ve embraced the asynchronous online model to support adult learners who are balancing work, family, and other responsibilities. UNH CPS genuinely understands that adult learners have unique needs, and that’s reflected in its approach.
What drew you to work (and teach) in technology?
I didn’t initially plan to work in technology, but the skills I gained became invaluable. I started in customer service and gradually moved into tech roles, wearing many hats—from application analyst to IT project manager. In my current role, I’ve developed skills in big data, which I find especially rewarding. Being a compassionate servant leader has always mattered to me, and combining that mindset with technical skills has opened doors I never expected.
How can a technology-related degree prepare students for the future?
IT is constantly changing and managing that change requires both technical knowledge and people skills. Today’s leaders need to understand the connection between technology and the humans who use it. A degree in technical management helps students develop this balance while building skills in project management, strategy, and governance, which are essential tools for leadership in the tech industry.
What challenges should students be most prepared for?
Emotional intelligence is more important than ever. IT managers need to stay current with technology, but they also need strong self-awareness, empathy, and communication skills. The field needs leaders who can balance technical expertise with genuine human connection.
How do you bring real-world experience into the classroom?
My career in technology has prepared me to bridge the gap between tech and people. I teach with a strong emphasis on trust, collaboration, and shared learning, encouraging students from different industries to learn from one another.
What do you enjoy most about teaching?
I love being a small part of someone else’s success. I aim to create a safe, supportive learning environment where students can grow, build confidence, and expand their professional toolkits, all while continuing to learn alongside them.

If a third party (such as an employer or outside agency) has agreed to pay all or part of your course charges, you must provide a written billing authorization to the Student Accounts Office. The billing authorization must be on official letterhead and include the billable amount. No extensions or deferments will be granted if you will be reimbursed for courses after the completion of a term. Payment must be made directly to UNH upon receipt of an invoice. Payment not contingent upon grade. Cash will not be accepted.

Credit for Your Training
We award the maximum credit for your military training based on American Council on Education (ACE) recommendations and guarantee at least 64 credits to transfer from CCAF. We also offer other options that let you demonstrate college-level learning, such as workplace training and equivalency tests (DSST, CLEP).
Active Duty Tuition Discount
We cap our undergraduate tuition rate at $250/credit so it matches the DoD Tuition Assistance (TA) Program. Graduate students receive a 15% discount on their cost per credit.
Aligned With Community College of the Airforce (CCAF)
We are partners with the CCAF’s GEM and AU-ABC programs to help enlisted Airmen fulfill general education requirements online and transition to a bachelor’s degree.

City of Manchester, NH
Wanda Castillo-Diaz ‘23 is a community health worker supervisor and serves on the Public Health and Safety Team, a multilingual community-based staff to connect people to resources and services. Wanda graduated with her B.S. in Applied Psychology with Option in Addictions Studies. Wanda supports the Manchester Health Department with resident case management and advocacy, connection to integrated integrated health care, basic needs problem solving, violence interruption, and community engagement.

These are refined skills that are essential when supporting a community whose needs can shift quickly. Karen Poulin '20, SHRM-certified Human Resource Analyst supports a municipal workforce of approximately 1,200 employees with expertise in HR best practices, recruitment and retention, position classification and job evaluation. She supports complex personnel issues and ensures compliance with employment laws, city policies, union contracts, and ordinances. Karen received her B.S. in Human Resource Administration and today her work plays a vital role to support the city’s long-term success.

Chief Ryan Cashin ‘21 has been a member of the Manchester Fire Department since February 1999. He was promoted to lieutenant, captain, district chief, and then deputy chief where he was responsible for training, EMS, fire prevention and all community outreach services. Chief Cashin earned his B.S. in Management. Cashin’s progressive leadership responsibilities illustrate how preparation supports long-term career growth and operational excellence.

In a cybersecurity environment defined by accelerating threats, tightening regulations, and rising organizational expectations, today’s leaders must be able to navigate far more than technical challenges. They need to communicate risk, influence strategy, and build resilient programs that protect people, data, and mission–all at once.
The online Cybersecurity Policy and Risk Management (CPRM) program at the University of New Hampshire supports both emerging professionals and those transitioning into the field—providing advanced, flexible training that builds confidence, sharpens leadership skills, and prepares students to step into high -impact roles across industries.
According to program director and faculty member Maeve Dion , the CPRM program was created with this reality in mind, preparing professionals to lead confidently at the intersection of technology, policy, and governance.
One leader who exemplifies this multidisciplinary approach is Gina Yacone, a CPRM alumna who serves as an executive cybersecurity leader and Virtual Chief Information Security Officer, advising organizations on risk, governance, and strategic security transformation. Her career journey reflects the growing demand for cybersecurity executives who can bridge operational needs with legal, regulatory, and business considerations—skills the CPRM program intentionally develops through its integrated curriculum and real world focus.
Gina Yacone partner with enterprise organizations to design and mature security, resiliency, and governance programs that translate cyber risk into clear, measurable business outcomes. The CPRM program played a pivotal role in shaping the way she approaches these responsibilities, providing both the strategic frameworks and leadership capabilities essential for modern CISO roles.
