A Rising Leader in Fire Service

Kayleigh Eastman '25

When Kayleigh Eastman walked across the stage to receive her diploma in 2025, she was the first female to graduate with a bachelor's in fire service administration from UNH. Her diploma represented a professional accomplishment that started years earlier with mentors who changed her life.

Kayleigh was just a junior at Berlin High School, when she joined her local fire department’s explorer post which is an extension of the Boy Scouts that allows young people to participate in fire and EMS training. It was an experience that sparked her interest in emergency services.

That early exposure led her to pursue an associate degree in fire science at Lakes Region Community College. As a live-in student at a local fire station, she gained hands-on experience that would further shape her career. Soon after, she joined the Lebanon Fire Department whose vision statement emphasizes public safety through professionalism, adequately trained and equipped personnel, and leveraging new technology. Kayleigh aligned well with the department’s commitment to lifelong learning. She attended paramedic school at the New England EMS Institute, adding advanced medical skills to her toolkit.

Kayleigh set her sights on earning a bachelor's degree to expand her leadership potential. Along the way, she earned multiple certifications through the New Hampshire Fire Academy, building expertise and meaningful connections.

Family and community support

Kayleigh credits her family for unwavering support. “Early on, my parents never pushed my siblings and me toward a specific path. They supported us in whatever we chose,” she reflects. “And my fiancé continuously provided encouragement. In different ways, both gave me the confidence to pursue a demanding career and higher education.”

Kayleigh’s community also played a pivotal role. As a teenager, Kayleigh attended Camp Fully Involved, a program for young women interested in firefighting. There, she met mentors who inspired her to aim higher, including Jess Wyman, the camp’s founder. While Jess passed away from occupational cancer in 2023, her legacy of excellence and commitment to education left a lasting impression. When Kayleigh graduated, she honored Jess by wearing a tie-dye helmet shield bearing her initials as a symbol of her mentorship. As she describes, “She inspired me to raise the bar in every aspect of my life and education.”

Academic impact and professional growth

Courses in communication proved transformative for Kayleigh. Professionally, they strengthened her ability to collaborate with outside agencies and with her colleagues. Personally, the courses helped her manage complex projects, including serving as the general contractor for her new home.

Her capstone project was a challenging but rewarding experience. With guidance from her professor, Ian Emmons, produced a research report that broadened her perspective.

Kayleigh states, “The capstone class was a valuable challenge at the end of my degree. The project required communication with fire chiefs across New Hampshire, data collection, statistical analysis, and the compilation of a report of the survey results.”

Advice for others

Kayleigh sees herself as an informal leader within her department and is preparing for formal leadership roles through continuous education and certifications. She admires qualities like versatility, passion, honesty, and compassion, and strives to model them. Her advice to aspiring firefighters and adult learners in the fire service administration program:

“Work hard. It will be worth it. Most challenges can be overcome with perseverance. And keep moving forward. Even when it feels like a long process, it’s worth it in the end.”

Looking ahead

The most rewarding part of Kayleigh’s career has been learning from mentors. It has been crucial for learning vital skills, building trust, and gaining support through high-stress situations. She remains committed to mentoring others to ensure that the next generation of female firefighters has the same support and inspiration. And while she has already accomplished so much, her journey is just beginning.

Registration Instructions

1. Review your degree planning tools through DegreeWorks to determine unmet requirements. Access your degree audit through WebCat.

2. For each course you wish to take, check prerequisites to ensure you have completed all of them. Please note that some undergraduate courses require a pre-registration skills assessment.

3. Contact your academic advisor with any questions.

Adding Courses

Students may register for 8-week courses during the official Add Period, which ends one week after the course start date.

Students may drop courses during the official Drop Period, which is two weeks after the course start date.

Contact your advisor or the Registrar’s Office for assistance. For courses that do not follow the 8-week schedule, Add Period and Drop Period dates are posted on cps.unh.edu/add-drop.

Make a Payment

If a third party (such as an employer or outside agency) has agreed to pay all or part of your course charges, you must provide a written billing authorization to the Student Accounts Office. The billing authorization must be on official letterhead and include the billable amount. No extensions or deferments will be granted if you will be reimbursed for courses after the completion of a term. Payment must be made directly to UNH upon receipt of an invoice. Payment not contingent upon grade. Cash will not be accepted.

Monthly Payment Option

When enrollment is available, Payment Plan links will appear on the Account View page in Webcat. The payment plan carries an enrollment fee of $60 for each semester you enroll in the plan.

Financial Aid

Federal, State, and/or Institutional Financial Aid is available to all qualifying degree seeking students, as well as eligible postbaccalaureate and graduate students, to assist with the cost of their education. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), be admitted to an eligible program, and be attending at least half-time (undergraduate and postbaccalaureate students: 6 credits/semester; graduate students: 5 credits/semester) in order to receive aid.

Getting to Know

Meet Rebecca

How did your family influence your decision to go to college?

My family is at the heart of my decision to pursue my bachelor’s. I returned to college about five years after high school to study elementary education, but I was forced to put my education on hold. Providing a stable income for my sons is my main motivation. It brings me so much joy to know I’m building a brighter future for myself and my children. I’m showing them that learning doesn’t end in adulthood. And they are amazed by my PowerPoint presentations. They’ve even volunteered to be “clients” in mock business interviews for my classes.

How do you manage school alongside work and family life?

I’ve learned to watch lectures while making dinner, fold laundry between assignments, and use soccer practice as study time. You don’t wait for life to slow down — you learn to keep going anyway.

Who

has been your biggest supporter?

Rebecca Sanchez exemplifies determination. A single mother to middle schoolers Kyle and Caleb, Rebecca Sanchez transferred from Nashua Community College (NCC) to the University of New Hampshire College of Professional Studies in 2024 to pursue an online bachelor’s degree in professional communications. Despite facing significant personal challenges, including a period of housing insecurity where she relied on the support of friends and family, Rebecca remained focused. She leveraged her credits from NCC to accelerate her progress at UNH and quickly distinguished herself as a dedicated student.

What led you to the College of Professional Studies?

I was working three minimum-wage jobs and couldn’t see a way out of the cycle. When I received an email saying I might qualify for tuition assistance through the state of New Hampshire. At the time, Nashua Community College (NCC) was a great place to start. It made sense because of its proximity, online options, and clear path to graduation. While on the NCC campus, I met a UNH representative who explained how my associate's degree could transfer seamlessly. I was introduced to my academic advisor, Keri Bresaw, who walked me through my options and helped me see that

Myself. After leaving an 18-year toxic relationship that convinced me I wasn’t smart or capable, I decided to prove that narrative wrong. My children are also incredible supporters. They celebrate my grades and push themselves harder in school because they see what’s possible. Becoming a UNH graduate wasn’t possible until I made it possible—and I’m worth the effort.

How has the UNH CPS community supported you?

In countless ways. My advisor, Keri Bresaw, has had a tremendous influence on me, and I’m grateful to have a mentor who believes in my potential. I’ve been inspired by leaders across UNH CPS who opened doors, encouraged me to share my story, and connected me with career opportunities. This community truly sees students as whole people.

What advice would you give other adult learners considering a return to school?

Go for it. Your journey is yours — own it. Ask questions, build connections, and don’t be afraid to reach out to professors. Returning to college has challenges, but support is there if you seek it.
