Welcome
Welcome to the first edition of the Tizard Newsletter. UK success seems to be amplified this year with the first male Wimbledon winner in 77 years and retaining the Ashes. Tizard is no exception and we have seen a plethora of research projects undertaken at the Centre. This area of our work is now bringing in income in excess of £1.8m. The Centre has an excellent track record of sustainability in the face of external challenges and continues to thrive. Such is our success that our international reputation continues to grow and we have several members of staff with overseas contracts; Prof Glynis Murphy carrying out consultancy work in Japan, Dr Julie Beadle-Brown working as adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Social Work and Social Policy at La Trobe University (Melbourne, Australia) and Dr Rachel Forrester-Jones visiting Professor at the University of Brasilia. This year has seen the expansion of our Consultancy work with the setting up of Tizard Associates to offer wider services to the Care Provision Sector as well as families. We are happy to invite eminent guest speakers to present both Research Seminars and to give the Jim Mansell Memorial Lecture each year. Speakers to date have included Professor Martin Knapp, Professor Jan Burns, Dr Frank Keating and Dame Jo Williams.

Anthony Golding Diploma in Positive Behaviour Support
We are delighted that all our year 1 students have passed their exams this year. Our year one students have a diverse range of experience, including parents and friends of people with Autism Spectrum conditions, people working in mainstream and specialist schools, home educators, staff working in FE colleges, social work and adult social care settings. We are particularly pleased that three of the students who initially registered for either the one-year certificate programme or for stand-alone modules have successfully applied to transfer to our degree programmes.

Postgraduate news
Student Prize Winners
Clinical placements run from April to September and this year have included placements at Child Assessment Centres, NHS Adult Learning Services, Positive Behaviour Intervention Teams and Specialist Educational Provision. Prior to the placement the students have workshops which include placement supervisors and MSc graduates. Some of our MSc graduates come back to present their clinical case reports and to offer placement survival tips. As well as having a clinical caseload, the placement students have to complete a clinical placement report detailing their assessment, intervention and evaluation with someone with IDD.

We are hoping that a number of you will be interested in joining our Alumni group which is being restyled this year in line with requests/information provided by existing members. The idea of the group is to share best practice and to provide working groups/ forums to share information. To this end we are proposing to hold an annual conference to include talks and working forums on specific areas. By holding this over a day we are hoping that it will facilitate members to attend. Full details still to be finalized.

Staff
Staff feature Professor Glynis Murphy Co-Director of Tizard Prof Murphy Co-Director, currently holds a joint Chair of Clinical Psychology and Disability at the Tizard Centre, University of Kent. She is co-editor of the Journal of Applied Research in Intellectual Disability, a fellow of the British Psychological Society, and was President of the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disability between 2008 and 2012. (www.iassid.org) She is also one of the Associate Directors for the School of Social Care Research. Glyn has recently returned from a trip to Tokyo where she attended the Asia-Pacific IASSIDD Conference 2013 and also gave SOTSEC-ID training alongside Dr Neil Sinclair. This was funded by the Muraki fund, set up for the benefit of people with learning diasbilities in
Welcome to new lecturers Dr Jill Bradshaw Jill trained as a speech and language therapist. She worked in a community team supporting adults with intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviour in London, before joining the Tizard Centre in 1995. She was appointed as a honorary lecturer in 2003 but returned as a sessional teacher in 2010, after a career break. She now convenes the Undergraduate Autism Studies Programme and teaches on the Postgraduate Programmes in Intellectual Disabilities.
Paraskevi Triantafyllopoulou Vivi has a BSc (Hons) in Neuropsychology from the University of Central Lancashire, a MSc in Cognitive Neuropsychology and a MRes in Psychology from Oxford Brookes University. Vivi has just completed her PhD “Clinical Psychology of Intellectual Disabilities” at the Tizard Centre. Vivi has also been involved in various research projects at the Tizard Centre (ie Effectiveness for CBT for people with Asperger syndrome and social anxiety; OFFSCA-ID) and for the last two years has been supervising empirical and nonempirical projects carried out by postgraduate students. She is the convener for the PGIDD postgraduate MSc programme and is teaching on various postgraduate and undergraduate modules.

All Glynis Murphy’s posts have involved teaching. She has taught undergraduate students on mainstream Psychology degrees, and on the Tizard Certificate and Diploma courses. She has taught postgraduate students on clinical psychology courses at the Institute of Psychiatry, Salamons, UEA and Lancaster University. She developed and convened the Tizard MSc in Analysis and Intervention in Learning Disabilities, which is now the Postgraduate course in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Taster Sessions at the Tizard Three sessions will be run in 2014 based on the topics of Applied Behaviour Analysis (Mecca Chiesa), Early Intervention (Nick Gore) and Sexuality (Michelle McCarthy).
Jim Mansell Memorial Lecture This is being held on Friday 11th April 2014 with Prof Patricia Howlin giving the talk “What happens to people with autism when they reach adulthood ?”

Consultancy
The Tizard Centre is part of the University of Kent with a track record of excellence in research, teaching and consultancy in the area of intellectual and developmental disability.
