Nursing (Mental Health) BSc(Hons)

Adult Nurses help adult patients cope with all aspects of illness, treatment and recovery by assessing their needs, devising care plans and monitoring progress during treatment. They work in a wide range of settings including hospital wards, outpatient units, specialist departments, the community, prison service, as well as the voluntary or private sector.

Mental health nursing involves working with people suffering from various mental health conditions, and their families and carers, to offer help and support in dealing with the condition. This could include anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, eating disorders, psychosis and obsessive compulsive disorders.

On this course you will explore all aspects of nursing, from the fundamentals of providing care to more advanced topics such as complex needs, and leadership and management. You will develop a range of specialist skills including communication, decision-making, team working and upholding professional values. You will have the opportunity to put what you have learnt into practice in our simulated ward using our patient simulators, as well as undertake clinical placements in a variety of settings.

Our mental health nursing team will support you to develop the intellectual, personal and professional skills you need to practice in this challenging and rewarding field of healthcare. You will practice and develop your skills through clinical placements in a range of private, voluntary, charitable or statutory settings, including forensic services, assessment teams, in-patient treatment units, rehabilitation centres, community teams, respite services, crisis and home based treatment, liaison services and prisons.

Nursing (Child) BSc(Hons)

Nursing (Pre-Registration) Adult MSc

Children’s nurses care for patients including newborn babies, children, adolescents and teenagers, as well as work closely with parents and carers, to support them in a variety of situations. They monitor, promote and help maintain their health, as well as care for specific health needs. Children’s nurses work in a diverse range of settings within a health and social care environment including hospitals, the community, children’s hospices, schools and clinics.

This course is for those who are passionate about nursing and would like to deliver care to adults with acute and chronic conditions across various settings within a rapidly changing healthcare environment. You will develop critical and analytical skills to become a competent, caring, compassionate, courageous, confident and committed registered nurse.

This course provides the opportunity for you to develop the vital skills, values and confidence you require to be a child nurse. You will develop your practical skills in a safe environment in our fully-equipped simulated children’s ward using our patient simulators, as well as put what you have learnt into practice through placements in a variety of settings.

Nursing (Learning Disability) BSc(Hons) Learning disability nursing involves working with people who have a range of learning disabilities, providing hands on care in relation to a person’s complex physical, social and psychological needs. Learning disability nurses work in a number of settings, including the individual’s own home, schools, respite units, hospitals and secure services. They work independently and in multidisciplinary teams, learning how to respond to the needs of someone with a learning disability. Through the course you will have the opportunity to develop skills to help improve the quality of life of people with a learning disability and their ability to live as independently as possible. You will practice and develop your skills through a variety of clinical placements in a range of statutory, private and voluntary services.

The course provides the opportunity for those who have studied an undergraduate degree in a health-related subject, to undertake a two-year full-time Master’s course and upon successful completion receive eligibility for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) within adult nursing.

Nursing (Pre-Registration) Mental Health MSc Being a mental health nurse requires patience, empathy and listening skills. You will have the opportunity to develop intellectual, personal and professional skills required for practice. You will develop critical and analytical skills to become a competent, caring, compassionate, courageous, confident and committed registered nurse. The course provides the opportunity for those who have studied an undergraduate degree in a health-related subject, to undertake a two-year full-time Master’s course and upon successful completion receive eligibility for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) within doctors mental health nursing.

Nursing Studies (Top-up) (International) BSc(Hons) This course enables internationally qualified nurses to top-up their current nursing qualification to degree level and maximise opportunities for career progression. It provides the opportunity for international nurses to develop their critical thinking skills and understanding of the application of evidence based practice. It aims to develop nursesâ€™ leadership and management skills to support them to develop practice and implement change within their area of work.

Ultimately this course facilitates the professional development of international nurses to enable them to return to their home country and improve service provision and patient outcomes. This course is not regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Midwifery BSc(Hons)

Physiotherapy BSc(Hons)

Midwives provide care and support to women and their families during pregnancy, throughout labour and the early days after a babyâ€™s birth.

Physiotherapists help people of all ages to restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability. They work as part of a multidisciplinary team in a wide range of settings including hospitals, community health centres or clinics, doctors (GP) surgeries, sports teams, clubs and charities.

On this course you will learn from experienced midwives and gain real-world experience in a variety of healthcare settings including birth centres, midwife-led units, labour suites, antenatal/postnatal wards, as well as in the community, enabling you to prepare to make a difference in the lives of women and their families. Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to build your knowledge of the theory of midwifery. Across all areas of teaching, we focus on the promotion of normality, health and the safe management of pregnancy, to ensure the best possible outcomes for parents and the newborn. Regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

On this course you will explore all aspects of practice from musculoskeletal physiotherapy and health management to neurological conditions and working with vulnerable client groups. You will study how to assess, advise and treat individuals with a variety of conditions including spinal and joint problems, respiratory difficulties, neurological problems and those recovering from strokes and other chronic conditions, accidents and operations. In addition, practice placements will be undertaken with local healthcare providers and sports clubs. Accredited by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Occupational Therapy BSc(Hons) Occupational Therapists work collaboratively with people to help them engage in those activities (occupations) which they need or want to do, enabling them to lead fulfilling and healthy lives. Occupations are practical and purposeful activities that allow people to live independently and have a sense of identity for example self-care, work or leisure tasks. Working with people of all ages in a variety of areas, you’ll assess an individual’s needs, devise treatment and provide interventions to maximise quality of life. On this course you will have the opportunity to develop vital knowledge and practical skills, as well as an in-depth understanding of Occupational Therapy through placements in different settings including areas such as an individual’s home, hospitals, schools, charities and prisons. Accredited by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) and regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Podiatry BSc(Hons) Podiatrists are healthcare professionals who assess and treat the lower limb and foot. Podiatrists work in a number of specialist areas with people of all ages including musculoskeletal podiatry, sports injuries, biomechanics and gait assessment, orthotics and nail surgery. This includes the management of foot health, routine care, specialist wound care and minor operative procedures, as well as contributing to the wellbeing of patients with diabetes, rheumatism, vascular or neurological disorders. This course

provides the opportunity to build the knowledge and hands-on skills you need whilst learning in specialist clinical facilities, in order to improve the mobility and quality of life of your patients. You will gain vital experience using our fully equipped on-site Podiatry Clinic, surgical theatre suite, biomechanics gait analysis equipment and orthotics laboratory, as well as undertaking clinical placements. Regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and accredited by the College of Podiatry.

Operating Department Practice BSc(Hons) Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) work alongside surgeons, anaesthetists and other medical staff to provide care for patients of all ages at all stages of the surgical process. The course will explore the three interconnected aspects of the ODP role: anaesthetic, surgical and post anaesthetic. You will have the opportunity to practise your skills in our simulated operating theatre, enabling you to experience the operating theatre environment. You will also gain valuable hands-on experience in a wide variety of clinical placements in a number of perioperative environments working alongside interdisciplinary teams in a variety of care settings, so you will be able to see how ODPs contribute to all sorts of specialist areas. Regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Postgraduate Master of Public Health

Podiatry MSc

This specialist course was designed in response to the demands presented by global and UK government policy, public health and health promotion. The specifically tailored programme aims to equip you with the critical knowledge, theoretical understanding and skills to enable you to make a high quality, professional contribution to public health.

This course has been designed for podiatrists who wish to further their career by expanding their knowledge of the specialist areas within the profession. The course provides the opportunity for you to focus on podiatric specialisms including Musculoskeletal or at Risk Foot. Through utilising up-to-date research evidence, policy documents and a wide range of clinical experience, you will be assisted to further update and develop your clinical practice, which may result in improved patient care.

This course will prepare you for employment with national and international Non-Government Organisations (NGOs), multinational agencies, within public health and National Health Service (NHS) departments, taking roles such as: public health specialist, intelligence analyst, researcher, health improvement practitioners and health protection.

Theory of Podiatric Surgery MSc Podiatric surgeons undertake invasive surgery on the foot and ankle, as well as manage a wide range of conditions surgically. This course offers qualified podiatrists the opportunity to expand and develop their knowledge and skills in this specialist area. The course will enable you to begin and gain competencies required for the path to becoming a podiatric surgeon.

The facilities at the University were great. The skills labs, simulation mannequins and equipment can be booked. This enables you to go through certain scenarios and put your knowledge to the test in a practical way, without being in the real life situation. This helped me link theory to practice when out on placement. There is also lots of support available from the course team, as well as other services at the University including the Academic Skills Development Team. Educational Partners As a student on any of our Nursing or Health professions courses at the University of Huddersfield you will have the opportunity to undertake clinical placements in one of our partner organisations. Placements are one of the most beneficial learning experiences for students as they are an opportunity to build your skills, confidence, flexibility, adaptability and resilience which are essential to a becoming a health professional. During your placements you will be provided with a mentor to help you develop your skills and competency, this will involve undertaking patient care under the supervision of qualified health professionals and demonstrating your ability to do so professionally. Your academic study supports your learning on placement and your placement experience allows you to develop your thinking about the application of evidence to practice.

This will help you to develop both personally and professionally, and you will become a knowledgeable problem solver and critical thinker. On all of our courses achieving competence in both your academic work and placement skills ensures you are able to practice to the required professional standards. Students are allocated to placements in our partner National Health Service (NHS) organisations across the Yorkshire region and the UK. The UK National Health Service is envied across the world and remains free at the point of use for all UK residents and deals with over 1 million patients every 36 hours. As a student on one of the Universities nursing or health profession courses you will have access to these patients and work within a team of professionals delivering care to the highest standard in the NHS. This enables the University of Huddersfield to offer a valuable education and clinical experience that is in demand across the world.

Nursing Studies (Top-up) (International) BSc(Hons) You must possess a Nursing Studies Diploma of Higher Education or an equivalent qualification and current nursing registration in your own country (equivalent to the Nursing and Midwifery Council [NMC]). Candidates for whom English is not their first language are required to have International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at a score of 6.0 with no lower than 5.5 in any single component.

Nursing and Health Professions Undergraduate Courses

Postgraduate Courses Typically, an Honours degree (2:1 or above) or equivalent in a relevant subject. The minimum of IELTS 6.5 overall with no element lower than 6.0, or equivalent will be considered acceptable.

Applying to Huddersfield We accept a wide range of international qualifications and when you apply for a place, your application will be examined and an offer will be made to you subject to meeting University entry requirements. This will be confirmed by email and on your Applicant Portal. Details of the Applicant Portal will be confirmed once you submit your application.

English Language Skills For students whose first language is not English, the University requires a recognised qualification in English language before you can begin the course.

International Foundation Year in Health and Human Sciences

Typically, BBB at A Level including a biological science or applied science. The minimum of IELTS 6.5 overall with no element lower than 6.0, or equivalent will be considered acceptable. You also need a satisfactory Certificate of Good Conduct and occupational health clearances prior to registration on the course.

The International Foundation Year will develop your academic knowledge and English language skills to prepare you for the first year of your chosen undergraduate degree. We offer a two semester foundation programme, validated by the University of Huddersfield, which offers pathways into all of the University’s faculties and preparation for the vast majority of undergraduate degrees available.

Acceptable English Language Qualifications

The International Foundation Year in Health and Human Sciences will prepare you for a range of degrees in fields related to nursing and the health professions.

The qualification the University normally requires is an IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6 in all bands) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent. Please note that some courses require a higher level of English, therefore please see the specific course details on the website for guidance.

You will study core modules, which are general skills subjects, and specialised modules tailored to your chosen area of study, all of which are important for your academic development.

Interviews Some degree programmes require a Skype interview with the Admissions Tutor. If this is required, it will be stated as a condition of your offer and the Admissions Tutor will contact you to arrange this. If you do not meet these requirements, then please do not worry. The International Study Centre (ISC), situated at the heart of the campus, offers English language and academic preparation for international students who do not currently meet the University’s direct entry requirements.

Major changes We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part-time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum. For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the

quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/ or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment. Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

Termination of course In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University. If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

If you choose not to join you have the right not to be disadvantaged; however, you are not entitled to vote, take part in elections, or hold any office. The following arrangements apply in order that non-Union members are not disadvantaged: // N on-members are welcome to take part in the activities of Affiliated Clubs and Societies on payment of the appropriate subscription. However, they may not vote or hold office in the society or club. The closest major airport to the University is Manchester International Airport, which connects with most international cities. You can fly directly to Manchester from many countries, or make a short connection from London Heathrow (British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, etc), Frankfurt (Germany, Lufthansa), Paris (France, Air France), Amsterdam (Netherlands, KLM) and Zurich (Switzerland, Swiss Air), which are all within about one hour of Manchester by air. Emirates also fly to Manchester via Dubai, Etihad via Abu Dhabi and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul. Leeds Bradford International Airport also has an increasing number of direct international flights.
