About the University of Hartford

The University of Hartford blends raw passion with emerging talent, offering intentional preparation across its schools and colleges to help every student thrive. Located on a 350-acre campus neighboring Connecticut’s capital city—and positioned midway between New York City and Boston—the University is home to approximately 4,300 undergraduate and 1,700 graduate students from 42 states and 53 countries. Here, students are guided to discover their place, their people, and their purpose.

The University’s charter was signed in 1957, but its roots go back to 1877 when one of the three founding schools, the Hartford Art School, opened. With encouragement from local community and business leaders, the Hartford Art School came together with the Hartt School of Music (now The Hartt School) and Hillyer College in 1957 on a 150-acre stretch of farmland on Bloomfield Avenue known as the Gabriel farm, the last farm in Hartford. In the ensuing 69 years, the campus has more than doubled in physical size and the University has matured in ways that its founders may not have dared to imagine.

The University Mace

Honorary Degrees

The tradition of bestowing honorary degrees can be traced back to universities in Europe during the Middle Ages, becoming commonplace at institutions of higher learning across the globe long before the University of Hartford was chartered in 1957. Through the years, the University of Hartford has awarded honorary degrees to distinguished scholars, artists, musicians, leaders, and dignitaries. Past recipients include Dizzy Gillespie, Arthur Miller, Benny Goodman, Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel, George Burns, Ann Landers, Arthur Ashe, Carl Sagan, Steve Allen, Jeffrey Bezos, Charles Gibson, Edward Albee, Wolf Blitzer, and Joe Torre.

The University Mace precedes the president and Board of Regents in academic processions. Maces originated as weapons but in modern times have become symbols of authority. The University Mace (shown at right) is 41 inches long and is crowned by a sterling silver globe, engraved with the name of the University and bearing its seal in 24-karat gold. The poplar shaft bears sterling silver bands on which are engraved the names and dates of service of the University’s presidents, and the names and founding dates of the three institutions that came together to form the University in 1957. The base is made of sterling silver and bears the name of the donor, the late Charles Condon, former University secretary and general counsel, who donated the mace in 1987 on the University’s 30th anniversary.

Lawrence P. Ward, EdD President

University of Hartford

A dynamic leader in the national higher education landscape, Lawrence P. Ward became the University of Hartford’s seventh president on July 1, 2024.

In less than two years, Ward has strengthened UHart’s deep commitment to student success through expanded career and professional development initiatives, enhanced support services, and strategic investments in campus facilities. He has also focused on positioning the University as a strategic partner in advancing the economic and educational vitality of Greater Hartford and the state of Connecticut.

Earlier this year, Ward was appointed to the newly established Connecticut Career Pathways Commission, created by Governor Ned Lamont and chaired by former U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. The commission is charged with developing a five-year strategic plan to ensure Connecticut has a modern career pathways system that incorporates emerging innovations in artificial intelligence, automation, and global competition.

Ward came to UHart after a successful 10-year tenure at Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, where he served as vice president for learner success and dean of campus life. His previous roles include associate dean for academic programs at American University’s Kogod School of Business; director at PRS, Inc., an organizational development consulting firm; and health care account executive at Aetna.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Connecticut, a master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Michigan, and a doctorate in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania, where he holds a faculty appointment in the Graduate School of Education.

Ward currently serves on the board of directors of the Tuition Exchange and has held several national leadership roles, including membership on the NCAA Board of Governors, chair of the NCAA Division III Management Council, and trustee at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Connecticut.

University of Hartford Board of Regents

Donald Allan Jr. officially became chair of the University of Hartford Board of Regents in May 2023. He has been a regent since 2015, and is a past member of the Barney School’s Board of Visitors.

Allan is a 27-year veteran of Stanley Black & Decker (SBD), the world’s largest toolmaker. He recently served as president and chief executive officer before becoming executive chair in 2025. During his tenure as CEO, Allan led SBD’s transformation, simplifying the company into a more streamlined, focused organization with a durable portfolio of iconic brands and businesses.

He was instrumental in launching the new Stanley Black & Decker Scholar program at UHart, which is providing students with scholarships, mentoring programs, and early career opportunities. Allan has also made building expansions and renovations possible at UHart, with SBD generously contributing to spaces and technology in the Barney School of Business, the Hursey Center for Advanced Engineering and Health Professions, and the recently opened Grant Family Track and Field.

Allan and his wife, Marilyn, recently provided a generous gift to the University aimed at empowering student success. In appreciation of their commitment to the next generation of leaders, UHart established the Allan Center for Career and Professional Development. This center serves as a hub for the diverse range of career-focused initiatives and programs available to students across all disciplines.

Prior to joining SBD in 1999, Allan held financial management positions with Loctite Corporation and spent nine years at Ernst & Young. Allan is currently the lead director at Andersen Corporation and serves as the Compensation Committee chair and a board member for Logitech. He is also active in the community and serves as a board member of Hartford HealthCare, The Hartford Stage, Els for Autism, Junior Achievement of Southwest New England, and AdvanceCT, Connecticut’s private nonprofit economic development organization.

Allan earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Hartford.

Sabrina Trocchi M’96 President and Chief Executive Officer

Wheeler Health

Sabrina Trocchi M’96 is the president and chief executive officer of Wheeler Health, one of Connecticut’s leading nonprofit community health and human services organizations. Wheeler provides comprehensive solutions that address complex health issues and provides individuals, families, and communities with accessible, innovative care that encourages recovery, health, and growth at all stages of life.

Trocchi received a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Hartford and later earned a PhD in public health from the University of Connecticut. She has received numerous honors and awards, including two from the Hartford Business Journal in 2021: its Women in Business Award and the Power 25 Health Care Award. On eight separate occasions, her organization has won the Hartford Courant’s Top Workplace Award in the large employer category, with special recognition as a woman-led organization. Trocchi herself won a Top Workplace Award as Top Leader for guiding Wheeler through the COVID-19 pandemic just months after taking the helm.

As president and CEO, she was instrumental in envisioning, developing, and opening Wheeler’s first newly constructed building since 1972, its flagship federally qualified health center and administrative headquarters in Bristol, as well as expanding community health care services at Wheeler’s health centers in Hartford, Plainville, New Britain, and Waterbury.

Trocchi also launched a company-wide initiative to advance the role of diversity and inclusion throughout the organization and has overseen Wheeler’s growth to serve more than 70,000 people in 90 percent of the state’s cities and towns. Her previous roles at the company include chief strategy officer and chief operating officer.

Prior to joining Wheeler, Trocchi served with the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. There, she directed the planning, development, and acquisition of over $170 million in federal funds to expand clinical substance abuse and mental health treatment and prevention services.

Kathy Behrens ’85

President of Social Responsibility

and Player Programs

National Basketball Association

Kathy Behrens ’85 is the president of social responsibility and player programs for the National Basketball Association (NBA). In that prominent role, she oversees a team of professionals who support player growth and development, leverage marketing opportunities for current and former players, and coordinate league and player social responsibility efforts.

Behrens, vice chair of the University of Hartford Board of Regents, is a champion of community service, diversity, and leadership within professional sports, and she has received numerous awards in recognition of those skills and commitments. Her portfolio includes NBA Cares, a global social responsibility program with a focus on education, youth/family development, and health resources, connecting NBA teams, players, and coaches with communities for positive impact.

A Bronx native who currently resides in Westchester County, New York, Behrens graduated from the University of Hartford with a Bachelor of Science degree. Her lifelong interest in sports was actively pursued on campus as she combined her studies with participation in the tennis and basketball teams. Behrens also found time to contribute her voice and ideas as president of the Student Government Association. She was inducted into the University’s Alumni Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.

Before her long NBA career began, Behrens served in the administration of former New York Governor Mario M. Cuomo and was the executive director of the Friends of Cuomo Campaign Committee during the 1994 governor’s race. Following that, she served as executive director of New York Cares, an award-winning nonprofit organization that mobilizes volunteers to help New York City’s neediest residents.

Behrens is also committed to the global growth of basketball through her service as a member of the Board of Governors for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the nonprofit museum and hall of fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of basketball.

Vin Baker

Assistant Coach, Milwaukee Bucks Four-Time NBA All-Star Olympic Gold Medal Winner

Doctor of Humane Letters

Through the years, the University of Hartford has awarded honorary degrees to distinguished scholars, artists, musicians, leaders, and dignitaries.

Vin Baker is the most accomplished men’s basketball player in the University of Hartford’s history. During his time at UHart from 1989 to 1993, he garnered All-America honors twice and set a single-season school record with 792 points over 28 games during the 1992–93 season, a mark that still stands today.

As the eighth overall pick by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1993 NBA Draft, Baker became only the second UHart player ever drafted by an NBA team. He was the first player from a New England college or university to be selected as a lottery pick.

Baker spent 13 seasons in the NBA and was a four-time All-Star. He was named to the All-Rookie First Team in 1994, the All-NBA Second Team in 1998, and the All-NBA Third Team in 1997. Over 791 career games, he averaged 15.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per contest. He was also a member of the gold-medal winning 2000 U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team.

Baker’s career, both on and off the court, has been a story of grit, perseverance, and resilience—a narrative he shared in his bestselling memoir, God and Starbucks. He has a long history of philanthropy, founding several charitable organizations to advocate for causes including mental health awareness and the education and personal development of young people. His Vin Baker Recovery Center offers support to those battling addiction in the Greater Milwaukee region.

In 2018, Baker returned to the Bucks as an assistant coach, where he has mentored players including star power forward Giannis Antetokounmpo.

In recognition of his achievements in competition and the impact he made beyond it, the University of Hartford will name its new outdoor athletics and recreation complex—set to open this fall—in Baker’s honor.

Meaghan Shaw ’26

College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture

Belle K. Ribicoff Prize

Awarded annually to exemplary graduating seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, and originality of thought.

As a civil engineering student, Meaghan Shaw has continually sought opportunities to conduct research, design projects, intern with established players in the field, and mentor classmates—all across as many engineering disciplines as possible. A more active, eager, or committed student would be difficult to find, which is why Shaw is an ideal recipient of the Ribicoff Prize.

“As just one example among dozens, all of which demonstrate her leadership, devotion to teamwork, and enthusiasm, Meaghan took the initiative a while back to apply for a summer position at the University of Miami, where her research on sustainable infrastructure allowed her to build on the fundamentals she learned in civil engineering and environmental studies, integrating them in new and effective ways,” notes David Pines, professor of civil, environmental, and biomedical engineering at the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture. “Meaghan also works tirelessly with fellow students to explain concepts, help with homework, and prepare for exams in physics, math, and coding. She’s invaluable.”

Other projects included interning with Tadco, a New Jersey-based leader in civil, structural, and environmental engineering, and creating several entries for the UHart design expos, including a first-place entry for a flood detector using specialized open-source hardware and software, and an automatic watering system for UHart’s greenhouse. That project led to her appointment as the student representative on the Faculty Senate Environmental and Sustainability Committee. In that role, Shaw helped organize Earth Day programming and educational events related to campus waste management.

Shaw serves on the Connecticut Gamma chapter of the engineering collegiate honor society Tau Beta Pi, previously as recording secretary and currently as vice president. She was also awarded the UHart-based Savin Scholarship for civil engineering students.

Taylor DePaolo-Daily ’26 College of Arts and Sciences

Belle K. Ribicoff Prize

Awarded annually to exemplary graduating seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, and originality of thought.

Taylor DePaolo-Daily is a digital media journalism student who has focused on sports production for four years to such an extent that reviewing her college tenure can almost be mistaken for evaluating an actual career. It is no surprise to all who know her—faculty, students, and broadcast professionals alike—that DePaolo-Daily has been honored with a Ribicoff Prize.

She has made it a personal goal to take on as many responsibilities as possible and build trust along the way as a pathway toward her professional goals. DePaolo-Daily has stated in the past that there is no difference in importance or hard work between something as simple as writing an email to support a department initiative and running the student television network. Every task is vital.

“Taylor is a shining example of what university students today should be. As her professor and advisor, I am well aware of her excellent work ethic and positive demeanor,” says Susan Cardillo, associate professor of digital media and journalism in the College of Arts and Sciences. “Because of her work, I have made her a trainer, project lead, and class assistant. Students look up to her. She is passionate about her work, which is obvious in her preparedness and follow-through.”

As general manager of the student television network, DePaolo-Daily dedicated much of her effort to creating a work-and-study environment that encouraged students to take chances by assuming new challenges. Among her other significant projects were organizing a trip for dozens of students to the National Association of Broadcasters event in New York City, convincing executives at NBC Sports and World Wrestling Entertainment to commit to panel discussions at UHart, and bringing advanced broadcast technologies to campus.

She was also a member of the Yale Athletics broadcast team for three years and worked more than 130 games as a director, technical director, and producer. In those roles, she mentored a dozen UHart students. She also won two engineering Emmy Awards along the way.

Humphrey R. Tonkin Award

This award honors full-time faculty members for scholarly and/or artistic creativity.

The 2026 Tonkin Award recognizes Clara Fang’s remarkable ability to transform complex technical concepts into practical applications and to inspire tomorrow’s most innovative engineers. Since 2004, she has brought her expertise and professional passion to the UHart campus as assistant, associate, and, for the past 11 years, full professor of civil engineering in the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture—currently serving as department chair and program director.

In her work as an educator, Fang, who received her doctorate from Pennsylvania State University and her master’s from the University of British Columbia, combines machine learning, statistical reasoning, and physical modeling to present her subject in relatable and understandable ways to those who may be new to the field. This method helps bridge the gap between engineering skills learned in the classroom and their application in society. Among her top interests are artificial intelligence, simulation modeling, public safety, and infrastructure.

“Clara’s innovative research and scholarly contributions have made a transformative impact on the field of transportation engineering at international, national, and regional levels,” says Ivana Milanovic, professor of mechanical engineering. “Among many other things, her expertise has advanced real-time traffic control, interchange design, and vehicle behavior analysis. Her collaborative spirit, mentorship of students, and influential role in professional organizations further exemplify her dedication to advancing the engineering field and fostering the next generation of engineers.”

Fang has been project lead on more than two dozen research projects, some funded by agencies such as the Federal Highway Administration and the Connecticut Department of Transportation. Her busy schedule includes time in the classroom, in the field guiding students through their own engineering explorations—occasionally involving high school students during special summer programs—and serving on many important committees, including the University Graduate Council, Faculty Senate, International School Steering Committee, and Faculty Diversity Committee.

Naoumova Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship Barney

Humphrey R. Tonkin Award

This award honors full-time faculty members for scholarly and/or artistic creativity.

Irina Naoumova, professor of management and entrepreneurship at the Barney School of Business, is known for her impressive scholarly output, which includes more than 40 peer-reviewed works (37 while at UHart) and a dozen research grants. Her work is frequently referenced by other professionals (by one count, more than 1,500 times), making her one of the most cited faculty members in Barney School history.

Naoumova has been a professor at Barney since 2008, teaching integral courses such as principles of entrepreneurship, strategic management and business policy, and managing in a global environment. In addition to entrepreneurship, her areas of expertise include strategy and corporate governance in transitioning or emerging economies, as well as international business and its associated management roles.

“Irina’s research addresses some of the most complex and pressing issues in international business, such as crosscultural values, global strategic decision-making, corporate governance in transitional economies, and decarbonization strategy,” notes Aarti S. Ivanic, dean of the Barney School and a professor of marketing. “Her scholarship spans organizational, societal, and institutional levels—an interdisciplinary integration that few scholars achieve. It is this kind of scholarship that exemplifies her extraordinary interdisciplinary integration and helps connect economies, culture, strategies, sustainability, and institutional theory. As such, her contributions go well beyond what is expected of a faculty member at her level of experience.”

Naoumova’s doctorate in economics and management is from Kazan State University in Tatarstan, Russia, where she also chaired the department of management. After arriving in the United States, her career as an educator included seven years at the University of Tennessee before coming to Hartford. She has also received two prestigious Fulbright scholarships from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to teach and conduct research abroad.

Roy E. Larsen Award

Jane Horvath Associate Professor of Economics College of Arts and Sciences

Honoring a full-time faculty member for excellence in teaching and contributions to the campus community.

Jane Horvath, associate professor of economics and director of the BA in Economics in the College of Arts and Sciences, is this year’s recipient of the Roy E. Larsen Award. It honors a full-time faculty member for excellence in teaching and contributions to the campus community.

Horvath is widely recognized for her exemplary engagement, motivation, and mentorship of students, as well as her effective collaborations with faculty and staff members on numerous University initiatives.

In addition to overseeing the curriculum for the economics degree, she serves as the director for the minor in economics and political economy and as the academic advisor to majors and minors in each program. Horvath is also the founding director of the University’s van Rooy Center for Complexity and Conflict Analysis. Working with faculty from across the University, she established the minor in complexity and directs the program. The University of Hartford is one of only a few universities in the country offering its students the opportunity to minor in this emerging and important interdisciplinary field of study.

“I have had the privilege of knowing Jane as a colleague, mentor, and friend for a long time, and I have witnessed many times her ability to bring out the best in students and lead programs that contribute to the curricular innovation and academic integrity of the University,” says Melinda S. Miceli, associate professor of sociology and chair of the Social Science Department at Hillyer College. “She is a teacher whose impact extends beyond the classroom, building connections and communities of support, and equipping students with the analytical and critical thinking skills they need to navigate a complex world with confidence and creativity.”

Horvath joined the UHart faculty in 1985, earned a PhD in economics from the University of Connecticut the following year, and developed specific research interests in economic development, the economics of teaching, and complexity economics.

Hemchandra M. Shertukde

Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture

Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Award

Honoring a full-time faculty member for sustained service to the University.

Hemchandra M. Shertukde, professor of electrical and computer engineering in the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture (CETA), has been a major force at the University of Hartford for almost four decades. He has been an effective educator, assiduous committee leader, dedicated social advocate, researcher, author, and more since arriving at UHart in 1984.

Born and educated first in India, Shertukde earned his PhD and MSEE at the University of Connecticut. His enthusiastic teaching is informed by a deep interest in various intriguing topics such as signal processing, multi-target tracking, multi-sensor data fusion, power systems, fault monitoring of power operations, and others.

Shertukde has also written or contributed to dozens of books, some of which are used as texts at UHart and elsewhere, and has worked on several projects and concepts for which patents have been issued.

“Hemchandra’s record of accomplishments reflects a rare and exemplary blend of scholarly achievement, innovation, professional impact, and institutional service,” says Saeid Moslehpour, professor and chair of the electrical and computer engineering department at CETA. “He has promoted several innovations that have added to the overall strength of our University, he’s provided professional services to key industry organizations such as IEEE, and he’s dedicated much effort to social services, such as the work he has done on behalf of his local Hindu temple.”

For the temple, Shertukde helped raise $50,000 to assist the town of Latur in India after its devastating earthquake in 1993.

He has served as chair of the electrical and computer engineering department and director of graduate studies at CETA. Shertukde has also been instrumental in bringing state-of-the-art technology to campus for the benefit of all engineering students.

Belle K. Ribicoff Junior Faculty Prize

Awarded annually to recognize an outstanding junior faculty member in a tenure-track position who demonstrates combined excellence in teaching, scholarly or creative activity, and service.

Rashmi Viswanathan, assistant professor of art history at the Hartford Art School, is an expert in South Asian art and transnational modernism, focusing on the mechanisms and politics of global cross-cultural exchange. Since joining UHart in 2019, she has skillfully and effectively combined international travel for research and archival work with full engagement with her students on campus. Viswanathan is also actively involved in developing new courses and learning opportunities. Students have noted her ability to persuasively describe the connections between art and history and to teach them how to think critically.

“Rashmi’s contributions to her field of study, her responsive pedagogies, and her dedication to her students’ growth and success, along with her involvement in campus life and University service, exemplify the excellence and dedication this prize aims to recognize,” says Alexandra Onuf, professor and chair of art history.

A semester does not go by without Viswanathan being vigorously engaged in a handful of projects for which she receives praise from colleagues and students alike. This includes roles as a guest curator at institutions such as Kunsthalle Exnergasse in Vienna and 12 Gates in Philadelphia, as well as fellowships at the North Star Collective and the National Portrait Gallery.

With a PhD in art history from New York University and a master’s degree from Hunter College, Viswanathan hit the ground running professionally the moment her formal education ended. It has been a nonstop pursuit of art history elucidations and exposés ever since—not just for her students but for the art-loving world at large. In fact, Viswanathan is currently completing a book titled Ambassadors of Art: State and Culture Across Borders, and her previously published works include numerous articles in top academic periodicals. She is proficient in six languages, including Tamil, Urdu, and Persian.

Sundeep Muppidi Professor of Digital Media and Journalism College of Arts and Sciences

Donald W. Davis University Interdisciplinary Studies Award

Presented annually to a faculty member who has made outstanding contributions to the University Interdisciplinary Studies Program.

Sundeep Muppidi, professor of digital media and journalism in the College of Arts and Sciences, will soon celebrate his 30th year as a UHart educator, a tenure marked by distinction for his scholarship on international communication, complexity theory, and communication for social change and empowerment.

“Sundeep’s sustained commitment to interdisciplinary education, innovative pedagogy, and program development exemplifies the spirit and criteria of this distinguished award,” says Jack Banks, co-director and associate professor at the School of Communication. “His approach encourages students to examine their own cultural assumptions while developing an appreciation for diverse ways of knowing and being.”

With a doctorate in mass communication from Bowling Green State University and a master’s degree in mass communication and television production from the University of Hyderabad in India, Muppidi combines his educational background with an insatiable desire to continue learning—which he fulfills by researching, writing, and bringing innovation into the classroom.

At UHart, Muppidi is renowned for his versatility and success in teaching interdisciplinary topics in the University Interdisciplinary Studies program, which spans technology, media literacy, cultural studies, and the humanities to develop cultural empathy and intercultural competence, particularly in South Asian and East Asian cultures.

Muppidi’s work outside the classroom is no less impressive. He is the author of four books, has contributed to dozens more, presented at more than 100 conferences around the globe, appeared on podcasts and television programs across India, Sri Lanka, Iran, Singapore, and the United States, and has worked on special projects, such as the documentary Seeing the Scientific Light, which aired on PBS stations.

Preserving the Memories

We are pleased to partner with Island Photography to ensure every graduate’s walk across the stage is professionally captured. Each student will be photographed several times during the ceremony to provide a variety of poses.

Within 72 hours, graduates will be emailed with a direct link to their private photo gallery. As a gift to our graduates, each student will receive one complimentary 5x7 photo of their favorite pose.
