What are Specialist Study Skills? One-to-one Specialist Study Skills tuition and support is available for students with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD), including dyslexia and dyspraxia. We offer a service which supports your academic studies, is led by your needs, and personalised to you. Specialist Study Skills can help you to explore how your SpLD impacts on your studies and help you to develop appropriate strategies that will work for you. Our service runs alongside, and complements, the University’s other academic support services. Who are we? The AccessAbility Specialist Study Skills Tutors work as sessional members of staff within the University of Exeter’s Wellbeing Services’ Non-Medical Helper (NMH) team. We are a friendly and flexible team of fully SpLD-qualified Specialist Tutors. We provide support for students studying at all levels and in any subject within the university. What do we do? Our individual sessions last for 45 minutes. Support is tailored to your needs, but will typically help you to do such things as: • Enhance your research skills • Plan your work • Structure your assignments • Revise effectively

• Unpack your assignment questions • Develop your proof-reading skills • Manage your time effectively • Plan for working under exam conditions What don’t we do • Make you do worksheets or phonics • Proofread your work for you, but we will show you how you can do this for yourself • Provide additional subject specific support What can I expect during a session? Our individual sessions typically last for 45 minutes. The first session will focus on establishing your learning priorities with your allocated Tutor. Following sessions will build on this, with an emphasis on enhancing transferable study skills that will enable you to reach your full potential. They are booked directly with your allocated Tutor following your first session.
How do I receive Specialist Study Skills? All students must meet with an AccessAbility Advisor before Specialist Study Skills support is put in place. Most students who access Specialist Study Skills have their sessions paid for by Disabled Students Allowance (DSA), provided by their funding body (eg. Student Finance England). This allowance helps to meet the additional costs that may arise from having a disability at university. Home students can apply for the DSA directly at: www.gov.uk/disabled-students-allowances-dsas/overview AccessAbility can support you with your application if necessary. International students, who are not eligible for DSA, are able to access Specialist Study Skills and are encouraged to speak to an AccessAbility Advisor about support available. What do we expect from you? We expect you to attend all agreed study skills sessions. If you cannot attend, then we ask that you give us 24 hours’ notice. If you give us less than 24 hours’ notice, or miss a session altogether, then that session will still count as one of your allocated sessions. If this situation happens twice in a given term, then we will review the suitability of this type of support for you at that time. Further information:
