alumni to connect with each other and the CU School of Medicine. The Medical Alumni Association and generous alumni supporters have made tremendous strides in supporting current medical students. Two ways in which we have done so include the Stethoscope Sponsorship Program and the Medical Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment. One of medicine’s most important symbols is the stethoscope. As a medical student I wore my stethoscope with pride and, as a physician, I have utilized my stethoscope in countless interactions with my patients. More than two decades ago, the longstanding stethoscope tradition began at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Since then, we have given more than 3,500 stethoscopes to medical students during the White Coat and Matriculation Ceremony. Each August, supporters of the program are invited to attend the ceremony to help send students off on the first phase of their medical careers. It is a meaningful tradition for everyone involved — as a medical student walks across the stage and alumni benefactors drape the stethoscope around his or her neck. Another critical component to supporting our medical students is the Medical Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment. This scholarship is awarded to a medical student who is in good academic standing, actively participates in the work of the Medical Alumni Association, contributes to her/his community and demonstrates financial need. Since its founding, recipients of the Medical Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment have gone on to support and mentor current medical students, invest their talents in the science of medicine, and volunteer their time to help others. As this endowment continues to grow, the Medical Alumni Association strengthens its ability to impact the next generation of physicians. Fueled by Philanthropy Philanthropy is critical for our current and future medical students, and your generosity has fueled numerous accomplishments: • More than 3,500 stethoscopes have been distributed since the inception of the program • In August of 2017, 184 CU-branded stethoscopes were given to the Class of 2021 • $15,000 has been awarded to students from the Medical Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment • In 2018, two $5,000 scholarships will be presented to medical students As the cost of a medical education continue to rise, student loan debt increases for our medical students. By helping reduce their financial burden and supporting these legacy programs, you give students the opportunity to explore careers in specialties they may not otherwise have considered. Nina Jean was a rancher’s daughter who passed down the value of working hard and helping others. She was the kind of grandmother who let you pick out whatever sugary cereal you wanted in the grocery store and who baked an extra pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving so you could eat it for breakfast the next morning.
“And she was the most stylish Grammy on the block, with the perfect hand bag and the best shoes,” says Sarah Milliken Glabe, MD. “She had a way of always making you feel special, whether you were in her presence or miles away.” In honor of her Grammy, Sarah gives $175 every year to the Medical Alumni Association Stethoscope Sponsorship Program at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus. Now Sarah is the one standing on stage at the White Coat and Matriculation Ceremony handing out stethoscopes to students as part of the Medical Alumni Association. “I felt impacted by the gift of a stethoscope when I was a medical student, and I hope that same impact is felt by students who come after me,” Sarah said. “It’s a reminder of the physicians we all aspire to be in our careers after we leave.”
