AT THE CENTER FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH RESEARCH

T

he Center for Women’s Health Research (CWHR) is committed to understanding and improving women’s health and the health of their families. Relatively little research on women’s health was conducted until the 1990s and such research has historically been underfunded. Our innovative research is making a significant difference in the lives of women around the country. We are dedicated to enhancing women’s health by conducting groundbreaking research on cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and the intersection of mental health and physical health. As importantly, we are committed to mentoring the next generation of researchers, and educating the public and health care providers on the latest research and treatment options. Your support for the CWHR helps us expand our education and research programs, growing the body of knowledge available in the women’s health and sex differences fields. I am so very grateful for the opportunities that you have helped provide our junior faculty and the educational programs for the public that you have made possible. Through research, mentoring and education programs, we are advancing women’s health. We have you to thank for making this work possible.

- Judy Regensteiner, PhD Director, Center for Women’s Health Research

Fueled by Philanthropy

Philanthropy is critical to our success, and your support has fueled numerous accomplishments: • Supporting the next generation of scientists by investing over $1 million in seed grants. This funding helped our 58 junior faculty attract an additional $60 million in external funding, mostly from the National Institutes of Health. • Our scientists have produced over 600 publications highlighting the latest work in the field, enabling us to demonstrate the leading nature of our research program. • Presenting over 20 community outreach events per year that educate the public and health care providers, build awareness within our community, bring together scientists, and train and develop promising junior faculty and practitioners. These events include Women’s Health Research Day, Women’s Health Symposium, Let’s Talk: Conversations about Women’s Health, and researcher trainings like Telling Your Story in Science and Moving Up – Promotions. In addition, we focus on building the researcher pipeline with events like Girls’ Career Day. • Changing lives with new early interventions, new strategies to remove barriers, and new personalized therapies that impact children and adults at risk of or currently living with type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease.

You’ve Made This Possible Over the past several years, we’ve made remarkable progress in women’s health and sex differences research and gained national recognition. Our seed grants allow junior faculty to make contributions to the field of women’s health and sex differences research and to get larger grants to continue their work. These scientists become mentors themselves over time, and some of our earliest seed grant recipients have already become primary mentors to new junior faculty. With the Judith and Joseph Wagner Chair in Women’s Health Research established in 2013 and the Nancy Anschutz Endowed Chair In Women’s Health Research established in 2016, the CWHR now holds two of the 20 chairs in women’s health research in the U.S., ensuring we have the resources to sustain our national leadership. In 2016, we hosted our first national conference in women’s health and sex differences research. During this two-day event, renowned MD and PhD scientists gathered to share knowledge and generate new ideas for future research endeavors in cardio-metabolic disease across the lifespan. In addition, our national conference uniquely included sessions designed to bring our scientists and community together. We will be having our second national conference in fall 2018. In 2017, we received our 2nd renewal from the National Institutes of Health for the Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) grant. This program, awarded to only 20 sites nationally, supports male and female MD and PhD researchers who wish to build careers in women’s health and sex differences research, and marks a continuation of our dedication to junior faculty. Our strong community connections and support were instrumental in our ability to obtain the BIRCWH grant. All of these accomplishments are made possible by your generous support. Our philanthropic community is strong and growing. Thank you for helping us change lives.

“

With the findings from the CWHR seed grant and the BIRCWH grant, I hope to further inform larger projects looking to improve upon the quality of decisions in post-cardiac arrest and limit the implicit bias that may contribute to varying outcomes for women and racial/ethnic minorities. - Sarah Perman, MD, BIRCWH and CWHR Awardee

“

With the support of the community, the CWHR aims to close the gap in understanding women’s health and sex differences, particularly within cardiovascular disease, diabetes and the intersection of physical health and mental health. By fueling vital research, supporting the next generation of researchers, and sharing our learnings with the public and practitioners, we can realize our vision of transforming women’s health and the health of their families.

“

The CWHR has a very important research role in advancing the science of women’s health. The CWHR specifically focuses on mentorship that is critical in developing the scientific workforce and infrastructure for future investigations of women’s health issues. - Brian Stauffer, MD, FACC, and CWHR Awardee
