Mecenātu uzticība – pamats

Latvijas zinātnes un izglītības nākotnei

2025. gadā LU fonds atzīmēja 20 de jure darbības gadus, taču de facto sadarbība ar mecenātiem sākusies ar Latvijas Universitātes dibināšanu un tās pirmo mecenātu – Kristapa Morberga, Kārļa Karpa, Minnas Matildes Vilhelmīnes Petkevičs un citu atbalstītāju testamentārajiem ziedojumiem. Kopš tā laika mecenāti ieguldījuši Latvijas izglītībā un zinātnē gandrīz 40 miljonus eiro.

Pēc padomju okupācijas, kopš 2005. gada, kad jaunizveidotais LU fonds saņēma sabiedriskā labuma statusu, tas turpina īstenot pirmo LU mecenātu vēlējumu – sniedz atbalstu talantīgiem studentiem un daudzsološiem pētniekiem.

2025. gadā paveikts vairāk – salīdzinājumā ar 2024. gadu par 32% pieaudzis ziedojumu apjoms, līdz ar to palielinājies stipendijās izmaksātais finansējums.

LU fonda pienākums ir nodrošināt labu ziedojumu pārvaldību, kā arī godāt un sekmēt akadēmiskās un filantropijas vērtības. Tāpēc, lai nodrošinātu efektīvāku un faktiskajai situācijai atbilstošu darbību, 2025. gadā mainīta LU fonda pārvaldības struktūra – iecelta jauna padome un izveidota piecu neatkarīgu ekspertu Finanšu konsultatīvā padome. LU fonda padomes uzdevums ir uzraudzīt finanšu stāvokli, koncentrēties uz stratēģiskās attīstības jautājumiem, savukārt Finanšu konsultatīvā padome sniedz konsultācijas ilgtspējīgai, ienesīgai un sabiedriski atbildīgai līdzekļu ieguldīšanas un pārvaldības politikai.

2025. gadā par 64% pieaudzis ziedotāju skaits, tostarp to, kuri ziedojuši pirmo reizi. Katrs ziedojums apliecina uzticēšanos LU fonda darbībai, turklāt sniedz pārliecinošu ieguldījumu Latvijas nākotnē, atbalstot gudrus cilvēkus, jaunus atklājumus un mūsdienīgu izglītību.

Trust of patrons – a foundation for the future of science and education in Latvia

In 2025, the University of Latvia Foundation marked 20 years of its de jure operation; however, de facto cooperation with patrons dates back to the very establishment of the University of Latvia and its earliest benefactors – through the testamentary donations of Kristaps Morbergs, Kārlis Karps, Minna Matilde Vilhelmīne Petkevičs, and other supporters. Since that time, patrons have invested nearly 40 million euro in the advancement of education and science in Latvia.

Following the Soviet occupation, and since 2005 – when the newly established UL Foundation was granted the status of public benefit organisation – it has continued to fulfil the vision of the University’s earliest patrons by providing support to talented students and promising researchers.

In 2025, previous achievements were exceeded, with the total volume of donations rising by 32% compared to 2024, thereby enabling an increase in scholarship funding.

The responsibility of the UL Foundation is to ensure sound stewardship of donations, as well as to uphold and advance academic and philanthropic values. Accordingly, in order to promote more effective operations aligned with current circumstances, the foundation’s governance structure was revised in 2025: a new Board was appointed, and a Financial Advisory Council composed of five independent financial experts was established.

The Board of the foundation is tasked with overseeing its financial position and focusing on strategic development issues, while the Financial Advisory Council provides guidance on policies for the sustainable, profitable, as well as socially responsible investment and management of funds.

In 2025, the number of donors increased by 64%, including a significant rise in first-time contributors. Each donation serves as an affirmation of the trust placed in the activities of the University of Latvia Foundation, while also representing a meaningful investment in Latvia’s future – supporting talented individuals, new discoveries, and modern, advanced education.

LU fonds uzlabojis pārvaldības struktūru –iecelta jauna padome un valde

Beidzoties līdzšinējās valdes pilnvaru termiņam, ar mērķi nodrošināt efektīvāku un faktiskajai situācijai atbilstošu darbību 2025. gada nogalē mainīta LU fonda pārvaldības struktūra.

Savukārt, lai nodrošinātu ilgtspējīgu, ienesīgu, pārdomātu un sabiedriski atbildīgu līdzekļu ieguldīšanu un pārvaldību, izveidota Finanšu konsultatīvā padome, kuras sastāvā darbosies pieci neatkarīgi finanšu eksperti – ekonomists, finansists un finanšu risku nozares profesionālis Uldis Cērps, uzņēmēja un investore Kristīne Bērziņa, eksperte finanšu pārvaldībā, investīciju stratēģijā un ilgtspējīgas vērtības radīšanā Laura Ramanis, latviešu izcelsmes amerikāņu uzņēmējs, Latvijas Goda konsuls Filadelfijā un filantrops Džons J. Medveckis, kā arī zvērināts advokāts, Latvijas Goda konsuls Ilinojas štatā, “Friends of The University of Latvia” valdes loceklis Roberts Blumbergs.

Konsultatīvās padomes galvenais uzdevums ir sniegt valdei neatkarīgus ieteikumus par fonda finanšu pārvaldību, tostarp līdzekļu ieguldīšanas stratēģiju un finanšu risku vadību. “Latvijas Universitātes kā LU fonda vienīgā dibinātāja pienākums ir nodrošināt tā labu pārvaldību, godāt un sekmēt akadēmiskās un filantropijas vērtības. Tāpēc LU fonda valdē un Finanšu konsultatīvajā padomē iecelti un darbosies cilvēki, kas augstākajā līmenī pārstāv trīs nozīmīgus fonda un LU darbības aspektus – izcilību, likumību un finanšu ilgtspēju. LU fonda padomes un valdes uzdevums ir sekmēt atbalsta pieejamību studentiem un pētniekiem, tā stiprinot mūsu Alma Mater un Latvijas izaugsmes pamatus,” uzsver LU rektors, profesors Gundars Bērziņš.

UL Foundation enhances governance structure by appointing new council and board

At the end of 2025, upon the expiration of the current board’s term of office, the management structure of the UL Foundation was restructured to increase the efficiency and relevance of its operations.

On 15 December, the University of Latvia Council approved a new UL Foundation’s Council, composed of sworn attorney, managing partner of law firm “COBALT” Lauris Liepa, “Signet Bank” co-owner and council member Irīna Pīgozne and UL Professor Mārcis Auziņš, who was also elected Chair of the Council.

Zaiga Pūce, the Executive Director of the UL Foundation to date, was appointed as a Board member.

The UL Foundation’s Council will monitor the financial situation, focus on strategic development issues, including the formation of new partnerships and strengthening competencies, while the Board will ensure operational work. The Council and the Board have been appointed for a three-year term.

Furthermore, to ensure sustainable, profitable, reasoned and socially responsible investment and management of funds, a Financial Advisory Council of five independent financial experts has been established. It consists of economist, financier and financial risk professional Uldis Cērps, entrepreneur and investor Kristīne Bērziņa, expert in financial management, investment strategy and sustainable value creation Laura Ramanis, Latvian-American entrepreneur, Honorary Consul of Latvia in Philadelphia and philanthropist John J. Medveckis, as well as Roberts Blumbergs, sworn attorney-at-law, Honorary Consul of Latvia in the State of Illinois, Board Member of “Friends of the University of Latvia”.

The main tasks of the Advisory Council are to provide the UL Foundation’s Board with independent recommendations concerning financial management, including investment strategy and financial risk management.

“The duty of the University of Latvia, as the sole founder of the UL Foundation, is to ensure its good governance, to honour and advance academic and philanthropic values. Therefore, the UL Foundation’s Board and the Financial Advisory Council are comprised of people who effectively represent three important aspects characterising the work of foundation and UL – excellence, legitimacy and financial sustainability. The task of the UL Foundation’s Council and Board is to facilitate the availability of support for students and researchers, thereby strengthening the foundations of our alma mater and advancing the development of Latvia,” emphasizes UL Rector, Professor Gundars Bērziņš.

Īsi pirms valsts svētkiem, 5. novembra vakarā, Latvijas Universitātes Lielajā aulā svinīgā ceremonijā LU fonds pulcēja visus 2025./2026. akadēmiskā gada stipendiātus un 2025. gada mecenātus.

Pateicoties mecenātiem, LU fonda stipendijas 2025./2026. akadēmiskajā gadā saņem 150 dažādu studiju programmu studenti. Kopumā stipendijās tiks izmaksāti vairāk nekā 600 tūkstoši eiro.

A heartfelt and festive event to honour scholarship recipients and patrons

Shortly before the national holidays, on the evening of 5 November, the UL Foundation gathered all scholarship recipients of the academic year 2025/2026 and the generous patrons at a ceremonial event held in the Great Hall of the University of Latvia.

Thanks to the UL Foundation’s patrons, 150 students from various study programmes are receiving UL Foundation scholarships in the academic year 2025/2026. In total, more than 600 000 euro will be awarded in scholarships.

Greeting the attendees, Zaiga Pūce, Director of the UL Foundation, emphasised: “Receiving a UL Foundation's scholarship is a great honour and a distinguished recognition – this year, 690 students have competed for this acclaim! My sincere thanks to the selection committees for choosing the very best of the best – outstanding young professionals deeply committed to the future of their alma mater and Latvia.”

11 jaunas stipendijas, palielinot kopskaitu līdz 67

Pateicoties mecenātiem, 2025. gadā iedibinātas 11 jaunas stipendijas – ekonomikas un finanšu jomās, eksaktajās zinātnēs, kā arī humanitārajās zinātnēs. Paplašināts atbalsts arī topošajiem pedagogiem – “MikroTik” stipendijas piešķirtas ne tikai topošajiem ķīmijas un fizikas, bet arī ģeogrāfijas skolotājiem.

2025. gadā pieejamas 67 dažādas mecenātu finansētas stipendiju kopas.

”Esam pateicīgi, ka aizvien vairāk mecenātu sniedz tik nozīmīgo atbalstu studentiem, tādējādi dodot iespēju ar pilnu atdevi koncentrēties studijām. Ne mazāk svarīgi, ka stipendija mērķtiecīgiem studentiem ir investīcija nākotnē un lielisks veids, kā godināt ģimenes locekļus vai dzimtu, tā turpinot vairot labo,” uzsver LU fonda vadītāja Z. Pūce.

Eleven new scholarships open, bringing the total to 67

The generosity of patrons enabled establishment of eleven new scholarships in 2025, representing the fields of economics and finance, exact sciences, as well as humanities. Support for future teachers has also been expanded – “MikroTik” scholarships were awarded not only to prospective chemistry and physics teachers, but also to future geography teachers.

In 2025, students had the opportunity to apply for 67 different scholarship programmes funded by patrons.

“We are grateful that an increasing number of patrons value the importance of supporting students, enabling them to focus fully on their studies. It is equally significant that a scholarship for dedicated students is an investment in the future and a meaningful way to honour family members or a family legacy, thereby continuing to spread good,” emphasises Z. Pūce, Head of UL Foundation.

“Rietumu Bankas” stipendija

Bronzas mecenāta “Rietumu Banka” atbalstu iedibināta jauna stipendija LU Ekonomikas un sociālo zinātņu fakultātes un LU Banku augstskolas studentiem, kas paredzēta izcilāko maģistra līmeņa pētniecisko darbu atbalstam Latvijas ekonomikai nozīmīgās, pielietojamās un sabiedrību uzrunājošās tēmās.

Stipendija līdz 5000 eiro tiks piešķirta līdz pieciem studentiem pēc pabeigtu maģistra darbu izvērtēšanas. Programma paredz arī atbalstu 1000 eiro apmērā darbu vadītājam.

“Rietumu Banka” scholarship

With the support of the Bronze Patron “Rietumu Banka”, a new scholarship has been established for students of the UL Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences and BA School of Business and Finance of the University of Latvia. The scholarship supports outstanding master’s-level research on topics vital to Latvia’s economy, with practical application and societal relevance.

A scholarship reaching 5000 euro will be awarded to a maximum of five students following the evaluation of completed master’s theses. The programme also provides support of 1000 euro for the thesis supervisor.

Jelena Buraja, Chair of the Management Board of “Rietumu Banka”, emphasizes: “Developing a modern education system closely connected to the real economy is essential for the growth of Latvia’s national economy. This focus will only become more important as the business environment continues to change under the influence of technology, globalization, and societal advancement.”

Induļa Eilanda piemiņas stipendija –zināšanu un patriotisma stiprināšanai

LU fonda stipendiju klāstam pievienojusies jauna stipendija, kas veltīta Amerikas latvieša Induļa Eilanda piemiņai. Tā paredzēta astoņiem LU un Rīgas Tehniskās universitātes bakalaura un maģistrantūras 1. kursa studentiem STEM zinātnēs. Atbalsta apmērs bakalauriem ir 2200 eiro, savukārt maģistriem – 3000 eiro akadēmiskajā gadā, stipendija turpinās visu studiju laiku.

Indulis Juris Eilands dzimis Ņujorkā, ASV imigrantu ģimenē, allaž augstu vērtējis viņam doto iespēju iegūt labu izglītību, tāpēc vēlējies palīdzēt segt studiju izmaksas studentiem Latvijā. Indulis Eilands Memorial Scholarship –promoting knowledge and patriotism

A new scholarship dedicated to the memory of Latvian-American Indulis Eilands has been added to the UL Foundation’s scholarship programme. It is intended for eight first-year bachelor’s and master’s students in STEM fields at the University of Latvia and Riga Technical University.

The scholarship provides 2200 euro per academic year for bachelor’s students and 3000 euro per academic year for master’s students, and it is maintained throughout the studies.

Indulis Juris Eilands was born in New York City to a Latvian immigrant family. He deeply appreciated the opportunity to receive a quality education and had hoped to support students in Latvia with the costs of higher education. Sadly, he passed away before realizing this wish. Therefore, Iveta Eilands, his spouse, established a scholarship in his memory, to be awarded to diligent students – patriots of Latvia.

The scholarship is intended for students in the exact sciences – mathematics, physics, and computer science – the fields that have been close to the founders of the scholarship themselves. The patroness hopes that the recipients will be purposeful and dedicated students who value their Latvian heritage and who, through their knowledge and work, will bring forth the name of Latvia in the world.

Iveta Eilands expressed a wish for the scholarship recipients to be diligent, to take their studies seriously, to set clear future goals, strive to achieve them, and to value Latvian identity highly. Indulis Eilands spoke of his student years, when he frequently studied in the basement of his parents’ home, because it was quiet there and he could fully concentrate on the tasks at hand – it would be worthwhile to see similar determination among the scholarship recipients.

Both patrons have held that to be Latvian is an honour and a responsibility – it has been very important for them to preserve their Latvian identity – both were born in America, yet always considered themselves Latvian, and their children speak the Latvian language.

Ms Eilands wishes that receiving the scholarship would inspire an even greater desire and deeper determination to study better and more diligently, to achieve excellent grades, and subsequently work successfully in one’s field for the benefit of Latvia. Then the patrons' contribution will have been worthwhile.

On behalf of the University and its students, UL Foundation expresses sincere gratitude for the donation, which will henceforth ease the daily lives of four students, giving them the opportunity to fully devote themselves to their studies.

Memoranda mērķis ir nodrošināt ilgtspējīgu atbalstu LU Juridiskās fakultātes studentu dalībai starptautiskajās tiesas procesa izspēlēs, kas jau vairākas desmitgades ir nozīmīgs talantu attīstības instruments un sniedz lielu ieguldījumu Latvijas tiesību sistēmas attīstībā.

Five leading law rms to support law students

On 2 October 2025, a Memorandum to Support Excellence in Jurisprudence was signed by the University of Latvia, the University of Latvia Foundation and five top-tier Latvian law firms – COBALT, Ellex Kļaviņš, Eversheds Sutherland Bitāns, Sorainen and TEGOS.

The aim of the memorandum is to ensure sustainable support for the participation of UL Faculty of Law students in international moot courts, which for several decades have served as an important tool for talent development and significantly contribute to the development of the Latvian legal system.

Each of the signatories to the memorandum has committed to making an annual donation to UL Foundation to ensure student growth, providing an opportunity to participate in the selection and preparation of moot court participants.

Pateicoties LU fonda mecenātiem no ASV – profesoriem Kristapam un Bertramam Zariņiem, Antrai Zariņai-Trašerei, Mārtiņam Andersonam, llzei Blekai-Ūdrei un Justam Nikolajam Karlsonam LU bakalaura un maģistrantūras studentiem pieejamas trīs stipendijas vēstures studijām – Richarda Zariņa piemiņas stipendija, Gustava Zemgala piemiņas stipendija un 2025. gadā izveidotā Karlsonu ģimenes fonda stipendija.

“Vēstures zinātnes, līdz ar to – arī studiju stāvoklis Latvijā jau kopš neatkarības atjaunošanas nav bijis spīdošs. Dažādu apstākļu kopums, tostarp neadekvāti mazais valsts finansējums, apliecina joprojām daudzās vēl neizpētītās jomas mūsu valsts un nācijas vēsturē. Tādēļ Latvijas vēstures zinātnei un studijām ļoti nozīmīgs ir atbalsts, ko ar LU fonda starpniecību sniedz ārzemju tautieši,” norāda LU Humanitāro zinātņu fakultātes profesors Ēriks Jēkabsons.

No 2013. gada pastāvīgi darbojas Richarda Zariņa piemiņas fonds, ko par godu sava tēva –ilggadēja Ņujorkas latviešu draudzes mācītāja – piemiņai izveidojuši medicīnas profesori Kristaps un Bertrams Zariņi, un farmaceite Antra Zariņa-Trašere (Thrasher). Fonda darbība ir tiešām daudzpusīga – visu šo gadu laikā regulāri tiek piešķirta stipendija maģistra darba rakstīšanai, ka arī sniegts atbalsts Latvijas vēsturnieku darbam. Lai paplašinātu zināšanas par Gustavu Zemgalu un viņa laikabiedru laikmeta vēsturi, pēc Amerikas Latviešu apvienības valdes priekšsēdētāja Mārtiņa Andersona (G. Zemgala mazmazdēla) un llzes Blekas (Black)-Ūdres (G. Zemgala mazmeitas) iniciatīvas 2021. gadā tika izveidota piemiņas stipendija, kas ik gadu tiek piešķirta vēstures bakalaura darba izstrādei.

Jaunizveidotā Karlsonu ģimenes stipendija paredzēta vēstures maģistra darba izstrādei. Tās dibinātājs ir jurists un uzņēmējs Justs Nikolajs Karlsons, kurš Latvijā pazīstams ar mecenāta darbību dažādās nozarēs. Vēsturniekiem domātais atbalsts godina un saglabā sabiedrības atmiņā politiķi un uzņēmēju Arvedu Bergu, Latvijas Armijas juristu Nikolaju Karlsonu un citus Karlsonu ģimenes locekļus.

American Latvians support history studies and research at the University of Latvia

The American Latvia patrons of the UL Foundation generously fund three scholarships for history studies, which are available to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Latvia – the Richard Zariņš Memorial Scholarship, the Gustavs Zemgals Memorial Scholarship, and the newly established Karlsons Family Foundation Scholarship.

“Due to limited support, many areas of Latvia’s history remain unexplored, making the support of compatriots abroad through the UL Foundation especially important,” notes Ēriks Jēkabsons, professor at the UL Faculty of Humanities.

The Richard Zariņš Memorial Foundation was established in 2013 by medical professors Christopher and Bertram Zariņš and pharmacist Antra Zariņa-Thrasher in memory of their father, a reverend of the Latvian congregation in New York. The foundation has been operating continuously since its establishment, and its activities are truly multifaceted – over the years, scholarships have been regularly awarded for preparation of master’s theses, support provided for the work of Latvian historians, and publication of dozens of scientific books funded to strengthen and advance the studies and research of Latvian history.

To expand knowledge about the history of the era which saw the work of Gustavs Zemgals and his contemporaries, at the initiative of the President of the American Latvian Association, Mārtiņš Andersons (great-grandson of G. Zemgals) and llze Black-Ūdre (granddaughter of G. Zemgals), a memorial scholarship was established in 2021, which is awarded annually for the development of a bachelor’s thesis in history.

This year, a newly established scholarship has joined the support of history studies – the Karlsons Family Scholarship, awarded for development of a master’s thesis in history. The founder is lawyer and entrepreneur Justs Nikolajs Karlsons, who is known in Latvia for his patronage in various sectors. The support intended for historians honours and preserves the memory of politician and entrepreneur Arveds Bergs, Latvian Army lawyer Nikolajs Karlsons, and other members of the Karlsons family.

In April, continuing the tradition, the UL Foundation hosted the second Breakfast of Patrons at UL House of Science. The event brought together the Foundation’s current and prospective patrons, the leadership of the University of Latvia, and leading researchers.

UL Rector Gundars Bērziņš introduced attendees to the University’s 17 sustainability goals, and the new Head of UL Foundation Zaiga Pūce presented an overview of the work accomplished so far and outlined future projects that require support and additional funding.

The audience was captivated by the lecture of Professor Jurģis Šķilters, Head of the UL Laboratory for Perceptual and Cognitive Systems, titled “What Happens in Perception Before We Perceive Objects?”

Profesors Jurģis Šķilters uzsvēra, ka mecenātu devums akadēmiskajā jomā ir unikāls – īpaši aparatūras iegādē, ko lielākoties nav iespējams finansēt no valsts piešķirtajiem līdzekļiem vai ES fondu projektiem. Pateicoties mecenātu atbalstam, vairāku gadu laikā LU pētnieki varējuši stiprināt pētniecisko kapacitāti ar iekārtām, tā rodot iespēju tālāk veiksmīgi startēt lielākos starptautiskos finansējuma konkursos.

Z. Pūce piebilda, ka nereti tieši ziedotāju atbalsts kalpo kā izšķirošs pirmais atspēriena solis, kas ļauj turpmāk piesaistīt vēl lielāku finansējumu.

Power of donation – a conversation about values, science, and civic courage

The Breakfast of Patrons programme included a discussion “How Do People Arrive at the Wish to Donate?” The conversation unfolded, encompassing the value of education, the sustainability of science, and the responsibility of civic society.

The discussion participants were Arnis Riekstiņš, co-owner of SIA “Mikrotīkls”, Platinum Patron of UL Foundation, UL Professor Jurģis Šķilters, and Lauris Liepa, Member of the Board of UL Foundation, patron and Managing Partner of the law firm COBALT, as well as guests of the event – patrons of UL Foundation, academicians and friends of the foundation. The discussion was moderated by Zaiga Pūce, Head of UL Foundation.

The discussion highlighted giving as a deeply personal, yet socially significant act. The opinions expressed by the participants revealed that donation is not just a technical transfer of money for a cause, it is a desire to see new opportunities and participate in their implementation. Education and science are part of the viability of a country, and suporting these areas means investing in the future.

LU pētnieki uzsākuši unikālu pētījumu par kūdras ieguves

Latvija ir kūdras substrātu eksporta līdere, – aprēķināts, ka mūsu valstij kūdras pietiek eksportam vēl tūkstoš gadiem. Ņemot vērā Eiropas zaļo kursu, pastāv iespēja, ka kūdras ieguve Latvijā var tikt ierobežota. Tāpēc, lai noskaidrotu patieso emisiju apjomu, kas rodas purvos, 2025. gada novembrī uzsākts unikāls siltumnīcas gāzu emisiju pētījums –LU Ģeoloģijas nodaļas pētnieki veiks oglekļa dioksīda (CO2) emisiju mērījumus kūdras ieguves laukos.

Jaunākās paaudzes virpuļplūsmas (eddy covariance) monitoringa mērījumu iekārta iegādāta, pateicoties LU fonda mecenāta SIA “Mikrotīkls” atbalstam. Tā pētniekiem dod iespēju veikt mērījumus, kas līdz šim Latvijā nebija iespējami. Savukārt sadarbība ar uzņēmumiem ļauj pielietot zinātniskās metodes reālās ražošanas teritorijās un veicina datu uzkrāšanu. Pētījumā iegūtie rezultāti būs uzticams pamats, lai prognozētu un plānotu kūdras ieguves nākotni Latvijā.

UL researchers launch a unique study on the future of peat extraction in Latvia

Latvia is a European leader in the export of peat substrates, and calculations show that the country’s peat resources are sufficient for at least the next thousand years. However, in light of the European Green Deal, there is a possibility that peat extraction in Latvia may face future restrictions. To obtain accurate data on actual emissions generated in peatlands, a unique greenhouse gas research project was launched in November. Researchers from the University of Latvia, Department of Geology have begun measuring carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in peat extraction fields.

The next-generation eddy covariance monitoring system was purchased thanks to the support of the UL Foundation’s patron company “Mikrotīkls”. This contribution has enabled researchers to begin measurements that were previously impossible in Latvia. Collaboration with industry partners opens up opportunities for applying scientific methods directly in active production areas and contributes to the long-term data collection. The results of this study will provide a reliable foundation for determining the future of peat extraction in Latvia.

Vai 15 minūšu intensīva slodze var “pamodināt” smadzenes?

LU Medicīnas un dzīvības zinātņu fakultātē asociētās profesores Līgas Plakanes vadībā veic pētījumu par to, kā sports ietekmē smadzeņu neirotrofā faktora (BDNF) līmeni. Projekts, kas tiek īstenots pateicoties mecenāta “MikroTik” atbalstam, apvieno dažādu jomu speciālistus, kuri pārstāv sporta zinātni, psiholoģiju, cilvēku fizioloģiju un bioķīmiju, veidojot starpdisciplināru komandu. Tādējādi iespējams detalizētāk noskaidrot, kā sports var nozīmīgi uzlabot smadzeņu funkcionēšanu. Tam ir nozīme gan dažādu mentālo traucējumu, piemēram, depresijas un trauksmes, ārstēšanā, gan neirodeģeneratīvo slimību prevencijā.

Pēdējo gadu pētījumi arvien pārliecinošāk liecina, ka fiziskās aktivitātes uzlabo ne tikai sirds un asinsvadu veselību, bet arī smadzeņu darbību. Viens no svarīgākajiem “smadzeņu veselības” marķieriem ir smadzeņu neirotrofais faktors (BDNF) – proteīns, kas palīdz smadzenēm pielāgoties, veidot jaunas smadzeņu šūnu saites un atbalsta mācīšanos, atmiņu un garastāvokli.

Līdz šim nebija noskaidots, kā dažādi intensīvu treniņu veidi ietekmē BDNF līmeni. Lai noteiktu, kura slodze smadzenēm ir visefektīvākā, LU pētnieki sporta zinātnes laboratorijā veica klīnisku pētījumu, iesaistot 60 jauniešus, kas, sadalīti trīs grupās, veica dažādas intensitātes 15 minūšu treniņus.

Kas atklājās?

Klasiskie augstas intensitātes intervālu treniņi HIIT “pacēla” BDNF līmeni, tas pieauga par aptuveni 25%, kamēr REHIT – maksimāli īsi, bet ļoti intensīvi sprinti – BDNF neizmainīja. Tas nozīmē, ka tieši ilgāki un vienlaikus ļoti intensīvi sportošanas intervāli efektīvāk stimulēja smadzeņu darbību.

Īsi HIIT treniņi var veicināt smadzeņu neiroplasticitāti – pat 15 minūtes ir pietiekamas, lai paaugstinātu BDNF un, iespējams, uzlabotu smadzeņu funkcijas, kas nodrošina spēju mācīties un pielāgoties. Savukārt REHIT treniņi nav tik efektīvi šim nolūkam, vismaz attiecībā uz BDNF, lai gan rada spēcīgu fizioloģisku slodzi.

Pētījumā gūtie secinājumi liecina, ka ne visas “intensitātes” rezultātu ziņā ir vienādas –šajā kontekstā svarīgs darba un atpūtas ilgums, ne tikai maksimāla piepūle.

Kāpēc tas ir svarīgi? Mūsdienu cilvēkiem bieži trūkst laika sportam. Šis pētījums parāda, ka efektīvs, smadzenēm labvēlīgs treniņš var aizņemt mazāk nekā 20 minūtes. Turklāt gūts jauns skatījums uz to, kā plānot treniņus, ja mērķis ir ne tikai fiziskās formas uzlabošana, bet arī domāšanas spējas, atmiņas un vispārējās labsajūtas sekmēšana.

Can 15 minutes of intensive exercise “wake up” the brain?

With the support of SIA “Mikrotīkls” and the UL Foundation, researchers explore the ways how different intensities of physical exercise can induce positive changes in the brain. The project brings together specialists in sports science, psychology, human physiology, and biochemistry, forming an interdisciplinary team that enables a more detailed understanding of the ways how physical activity can significantly enhance brain function.

Recent scientific evidence increasingly confirms that physical activity benefits not only cardiovascular health, but also brain function. One of the key markers of “brain health” is brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) – a protein that supports the brain’s ability to adapt, form new neural connections, and sustain learning, memory, and mood regulation.

However, it remained unclear how different types of high-intensity training affect BDNF levels. To determine which type of exercise is most beneficial for the brain, UL researchers conducted a clinical study in the Sports Science Laboratory involving 60 young participants. Divided into three groups, they completed 15-minute training sessions at varying levels of intensity.

What were the findings?

Classic high-intensity interval training (HIIT) increased BDNF levels by approximately 25%, whereas REHIT – extremely short but maximal sprint intervals – did not yield any change in BDNF. This suggests that longer, yet still very intense exercise intervals more effectively stimulate what is often referred to as “brain growth.”

Short HIIT sessions may promote brain neuroplasticity – even 15 minutes can be sufficient to elevate BDNF levels and potentially enhance the brain’s ability to learn and adapt. In contrast, REHIT appears to be less effective in this respect, at least regarding BDNF, despite imposing a strong physiological load.

The study highlights that not all forms of “intensity” are equal. The findings suggest that the duration of work and recovery periods matters, not only the level of maximal exertion.

What does this mean?

In modern society, lack of time is a common barrier to regular physical activity. This study demonstrates that an effective, brain-friendly workout can take less than 20 minutes. It also offers new insights into the design of training programs, when the goal is not only physical fitness, but also improvement of cognitive performance, memory, and overall well-being.

Mūsu pētījumu mērķis ir noskaidrot, kā darbojas cilvēka uzmanība atkarībā no redzamā objekta dažu milisekunžu laikā. Šeit ir vairāki interesanti jautājumi. Pirmkārt, vai šo milisekunžu laikā iespējams novērot atšķirības starp normālu un neirodeģeneratīvi traucētu uztveri? Esam guvuši tam apstiprinājumu. Otrs jautājums, kas liek raudzīties uz pētījumu plašāk, ne vien neirodeģeneratīvo traucējumu kontekstā, – vai iespējams izmainīt to, kā un kur skatāmies sekundes tūkstošdaļu laikā? Jā! Mūsu pētījumi parāda un izskaidro dažus no šiem procesiem.

Līdztekus citām pētniecības metodēm izmantojam acu kustību pierakstu. Būtisks ieguvums neirodeģeneratīvo traucējumu izpētes gadījumā ir tas, ka mūsu pētījumi ļauj pavisam agrīnā izpausmes stadijā konstatēt iespējamus neirodeģeneratīvus traucējumus. Šobrīd strādājam pie metodes, kas pamatotu jaunu biomarķieru definēšanu neirodeģeneratīvu saslimšanu diagnostikā. Šie pētījumi norisinās sadarbībā ar vadošajiem Latvijas neirologiem un radiologiem, izmantojot visjaudīgāko Latvijā pieejamo magnētiskās rezonanses izmeklējumu tehnoloģiju. Šādas metodes izveide uzlabotu diagnostikas iespējas, kā arī ļautu saprast, kas tieši padara cilvēka uztveri par “normālu” salīdzinājumā ar nelielām klīniskām izmaiņām.

Kā depresija vai nogurums ietekmē mūsu uztveri? Uztveres organizācijas procesi pētīti plaši, tomēr parasti tikuši novērtēti vidusmēra populācijā. Daudz retāk šie procesi apskatīti, pētot cilvēkus ar neiroloģiskiem traucējumiem, vai arī ņemot vērā vecuma atšķirības, emocijas, depresijas iezīmes vai nogurumu. Mūsu pētījumu perspektīva un iepriekšējās iestrādes šajā ziņā uzskatāmas par unikālām un atšķirīgām, jo te uzmanības centrā ir tieši šie faktori.

Studies of eye movements for early diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders

A conversation with Professor Jurģis Šķilters, Head of the Laboratory for Perceptual and Cognitive Systems at UL Faculty of Science and Technology.

Neurodegenerative disorders are incurred by severe diseases of the central nervous system that mainly affect older people worldwide and cause serious perceptual, cognitive and movement impairments. This significantly reduces the quality of a person’s life and often causes acute and irreversible disability. However, an early diagnosis and treatment still present a challenge to modern science. Over several years, the Laboratory for Perceptual and Cognitive Systems of the University of Latvia has been conducting unique research into human perception.

Can neurodegenerative disorders be detected by studying eye movements?

Our research aims to explain how human attention works depending on the object being viewed within a few milliseconds. There are several interesting questions here. First, is it possible to see differences between normal and neurodegeneratively impaired perception within these milliseconds? Our research suggests that the reply is affirmative. The second question, which is broader than the context of neurodegenerative disorders, – is it possible to change how and where we look within a thousandth of a second? This is confirmed, too. Our research demonstrates and explains some of these processes.

Among other research methods, we use eye movement recording. The advantage of this method is that, unlike most other studies and developed methods, the patient does not have to perform complex actions, only observe the rows of dots and objects on the screen. We are one of the few research units in Europe that tests mid-level processes in the case of neurodegenerative patients with eye movements.

A significant benefit in the case of research dedicated to neurodegenerative disorders is that our studies permit us to detect possible neurodegenerative disorders at a very early stage of manifestation. We are currently working on a method that would support the definition of new biomarkers in the diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases. These studies are conducted in collaboration with leading Latvian neurologists and radiologists, using the most powerful magnetic resonance imaging technology available in Latvia. The development of such a method would improve diagnostic capabilities and also allow us to understand what exactly makes a person’s perception “normal” compared to minor clinical changes.

How depression or fatigue affects our perception?

Perceptual organization processes have been widely studied, but they have usually been assessed in the average population. Much less often, they have been addressed in people with neurological disorders, or in the context of age differences, emotions, depressive symptoms, or fatigue. Our research perspective and previous work in this regard are unique and different, because we focus specifically on these factors.

These results will demonstrate whether fatigue significantly affects the accuracy of perception before we are even aware of it. And even if we are aware of it, whether and to what extent our perception “betrays” us in the processes of milliseconds. The results will have applications, for example, for ensuring that in so-called high-precision performance professions it would be possible to determine whether fatigue already represent danger, regardless of subjective feelings. Driving, medicine, the military are just some of the areas where the results could be put into practice.

Pateicoties LU fonda Platīna mecenāta – uzņēmuma “MikroTik” ziedojumiem daudzas LU zinātniskās laboratorijas aprīkotas ar jaunākās paaudzes iekārtām. Viena no tām ir Zinātņu mājas tīrtelpa, kas aprīkota ar dzīvu šūnu analizatorsistēmu Incucyte S3. Tas ir būtisks atbalsts augsta līmeņa šūnu bioloģijas pētījumiem – pētnieki var monitorēt šūnas to “dabīgajos” apstākļos reālajā laikā, turklāt to darīt arī attālināti.

Incucyte S3 sistēma tiek izmantota vairākos LU pētījumos. Vienā no šiem unikālajiem pētījumiem apskatīta perifērās nervu sistēmas iesaiste audzējā. To īsteno Farmācijas zinātņu nodaļas pētnieki Dr. pharm. Vadima Parfejeva vadībā. Ar iekārtas palīdzību reālajā laikā tiek monitorēts, kā audzēja šūnas un periferā nerva komponentes migrē viena otrai pretī. Tas ir maz pētīts audzēja metastāzēšanas mehānisms, kad audzēja šūnas iekļūst nervos. Iekārtu var izmantot visdažādāko šūnu audzēšanas monitoringam, turklāt ne tikai šūnu, bet arī organoīdu un sferoīdu kultivēšanas monitoringam.

Pirmie ar iekārtas palīdzību iegūtie dati drīz vien tiks iekļauti starptautiskās zinātniskajās publikācijās, jo iekārtu pētījumiem izmanto arī LU Mikrobioloģijas un biotehnoloģijas institūta Šūnu un audu testsistēmu laboratorijas, Farmācijas zinātņu nodaļas, Atomfizikas un spektroskopijas institūta Uzlaboto biomateriālu un biofizikas laboratorijas zinātnieki.

UL researchers study cells in their “natural” conditions

In research, state-of-the-art equipment plays a critical role. Generous donations from the University of Latvia Foundation’s Platinum Patron company “MikroTik” have ensured that many laboratories at University of Latvia have been equipped with next-generation technologies. One of them is the cleanroom at the House of Science, which has acquired a live cell analysis system, Incucyte S3, purchased in the framework of project competition funded by “MikroTik” in the field of natural, technology, and medical sciences. This is a significant support for conducting high-level cell biology research, enabling researchers to monitor cells in their “natural” conditions in real-time, even remotely.

Incucyte S3 is already being used in several UL research projects. One such unique project is focused on the involvement of the peripheral nervous system in tumours, led by Dr. pharm. Vadims Parfejevs at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. With the help of this device, researchers are monitoring in real-time how tumour cells and peripheral nerve components migrate towards each other. To date, this has been a poorly understood mechanism of tumour metastasis, where tumour cells invade nerves. The equipment can be used for monitoring various types of cell cultures, as well as organoids and spheroids.

It won't be long before the first data obtained from the equipment will be included in international scientific publications, as researchers from the UL the Microbiology and Biotechnology Institute’s Cell and Tissue Testing System Laboratory, the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Advanced Biomaterials and Biophysics Laboratory at the Institute of Atomic Physics and Spectroscopy are already using the equipment for their studies.

“Being lucky is even more important than being a good photographer,” said D. Burnett, addressing the lecture audience.

Burnett is a legendary photojournalist. He has documented news, people and the visual rhythm of the world for more than 50 years. During his career, he has captured moments reflecting globally historical events – the Olympic Games, wars, political developments, natural disasters, as well as the behind-the-scenes lives of iconic personalities.

Opening the event, the Rector of the University of Latvia, Gundars Bērziņš, said: “University is not just a place to acquire an education – it is a place where we learn to comprehend the world and ourselves therein. It is crucial to understand how different people think – especially those who have seen the world from a different perspective, at a different time and with different experiences. This event is a great opportunity to hear a life story that inspires and stirs passion.”

Profesora Čārlza Spensa lekcija par cilvēka maņām un saiknēm starp tām

Viens no pēdējo 100 gadu nozīmīgākajiem britu zinātniekiem, Oksfordas Universitātes profesors Čārlzs Spenss (Charles Spence) viesojās LU ar lekciju “Maņu saistījumi laikā un telpā, to ietekme uz zinātni, mākslu un dizainu”.

Otrā lekcija LU fonda rīkotā cikla “Akadēmiskie lasījumi” ietvaros 2. oktobrī notika pārpildītā LU Lielajā aulā.

Profesors Spenss ir Oksfordas Universitātes Eksperimentālās psiholoģijas profesors, Šķērsmodālās uztveres laboratorijas vadītājs, viens no garšas izpētes pamatlicējiem mūsdienu zinātnē. Viņa pētījumi veltīti jautājumiem par to, kā dažādas maņas (redze, dzirde, oža, tauste un garša) ietekmē viena otru, un kā izmantot iegūtos zinātniskos rezultātus, lai uzlabotu dzīves kvalitāti.

Vairāku gadu desmitu laikā prof. Spenss panācis nozīmīgu pavērsienu uztveres pētniecības jomā un izveidojis mūsdienu garšas pētniecības nozari. Daudzu asprātīgu pētījumu rezultātā viņš demonstrējis to, ka ēdiena garšu izšķiroši ietekmē skaņa, tauste un ēdiena izskats, kā estētiskais vērtējums ietekmē garšu, turklāt arī to, kā garša un citas maņas saistītas ar mūsu emocijām.

Lecture about human senses by Professor Charles Spence

One of the most prominent British scientists of the last 100 years, Oxford University Professor Charles Spence, visited the University of Latvia with a lecture “The Correspondences: Connecting the Senses across Time and Space, Implications for Science, Art, & Design”.

The second lecture in the University of Latvia Foundation’s “Academic Readings” series took place on 2 October 2025 before a full auditorium in Aula Magna.

Charles Spence is Professor of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford, the head of the Crossmodal Research Laboratory, and one of the taste research founders in modern science. His research focuses on the ways how the different senses (sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste) influence each other, and applications of the research results in this field to improve the quality of life.

Over the decades, Prof. Spence has revolutionized the field of multisensory perception research and established the modern field of taste research. Through his extensive, insightful studies, he has demonstrated that the taste of food is decisively influenced by sound, touch, and appearance, how aesthetic judgments affect taste, and how taste and other senses are linked to our emotions.

Baldones observatorijā atklāts jauns

asteroīds, tam dots nosaukums “LU fonds”

Asteroīds (658398) Lufonds = 2017 RE3 tika atklāts 2017. gada 29. jūlija naktī Baldones astrofizikas observatorijā. 2025. gada janvārī Saules sistēmas galvenās asteroīdu joslas mazajam objektam dots nosaukums “LU fonds” – pateicībā visiem Latvijas Universitātes fonda mecenātiem par ieguldījumu Latvijas izglītībā un zinātnē, tostarp arī Baldones teleskopa modernizēšanā.

Jaunatklātā asteroīda aptuvenais izmērs ir viens kilometrs, šī iegarenas formas objekta attālums no Saules ir 2.78 astronomiskās vienības (apmēram 417 miljoni kilometru) un vienu apriņķojumu ap Sauli tas veic 5,26 gados.

“No asteroīda pamanīšanas līdz pilnīgai jauna objekta apstiprināšanai var paiet pat pieci līdz septiņi gadi. Lai pilnībā pārliecinātos, ka pamanīts jauns objekts, nepieciešami vairāki novērojumi, kas apliecina tā kustīgumu noteiktajā orbītā. Asteroīda “LU fonds” pozīciju mērījumu apjoms un precizitāte uzkrāta 15 tuvošanās reizēs Zemei un šajā darba iesaistījās arī citas observatorijas visā pasaulē,” stāsta LU Astronomijas institūta vadošais pētnieks Dr. phys. Ilgmārs Eglītis.

Lai arī gadā Latvijā tiek atklāti aptuveni 8 asteroīdi, nosaukumus tiem izdodas piešķirt reti. Arī pasaulē šie pētījumi ir salīdzinoši neseni – šobrīd Saules sistēmā atklāti vien 45% no visiem Zemei iespējami bīstamajiem asteroīdiem.

Baldones Šmita tipa teleskops ir unikāls lielā redzeslauka un kosmisko objektu attēlu ideālās kvalitātes dēļ. Tas ir lielākais Baltijā un divpadsmitais lielākais šādas sistēmas instruments pasaulē. Pateicoties LU fonda mecenātu ziedojumiem, LU Astronomijas institūts teleskopam veicis vairākus būtiskus uzlabojumus, piemēram, uzstādīta mūsdienīga kamera, kas ļauj ekspozīcijas laiku samazināt no divām stundām līdz astoņām minūtēm. Būtiski, ka iegūtie attēli uzreiz pieejami digitālā formātā un ar tiem var strādāt pētnieki no jebkuras vietas pasaulē.

New asteroid discovered at Baldone Observatory, and named in honour of UL Foundation

Asteroid (658398) Lufonds = 2017 RE3 was discovered on the night of 29 July 2017 at the Baldone Astrophysical Observatory. In 2025, the small object in the main asteroid belt of the Solar System was given the name “LU fonds” to express gratitude to all the patrons of the University of Latvia Foundation for their contribution to education and science in Latvia, including modernization of the Baldone Telescope.

The newly discovered asteroid is approximately one kilometre in size, has an elongated shape, its distance from the Sun equals 2.78 astronomical units (about 417 million kilometres), and it takes 5.26 years to orbit the Sun. At the time of discovery, the asteroid was located in the Pisces constellation between Mars and Jupiter, constituting an object of 20.8 magnitude.

“From the sighting of an asteroid to the full confirmation of a new object, it can take as long as five to seven years. To be completely sure that a new object has been spotted, several observations are needed that confirm its movement in the specified orbit. The volume and accuracy of the asteroid position measurements by the newly discovered “LU fonds” have been accumulated during 15 approaches to Earth, and other observatories around the world also participated in this work,” explains Dr. phys. Ilgmārs Eglītis, leading researcher at the Institute of Astronomy of the University of Latvia.

Although approximately eight asteroids are discovered annually in Latvia, they are rarely assigned names. Currently only 45% of all the asteroids which could potentially be dangerous for Earth have been discovered in the Solar System.

The Baldone Schmidt-type telescope is unique due to its large field of view or field of vision, and the ideal quality of images of cosmic objects. It is the largest in the Baltics and the twelfth largest instrument of this system in the world.

The donations from patrons of the University of Latvia Foundation have enabled the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Latvia to carry out several significant upgrades to the telescope. For example, a modern camera has been installed that reduces the exposure time from two hours to eight minutes. Importantly, the images are produced in digital format, and thus the researchers can work with them from anywhere in the world.

Sadarbībā ar LU fonda mecenātu AS “Signet Bank” LU Zinātņu mājā bija skatāma bankas korporatīvās mākslas kolekcijas daļa – ukraiņu izcelsmes skulptora Denisa Prasolova darbu sērija “Pirmā ekipāža”. Tā bija pirmā reize, kad mākslas darbi piedāvāti apskatei plašākai sabiedrībai.

“Pirmā ekipāža” ir monumentāla bronzas skulptūru sērija, kas vizuāli un simboliski runā par cilvēces attīstības ceļu, tehnoloģiju un cilvēka savstarpējo saikni, kā arī par spēku un vienlaikus trauslumu, kas raksturo cilvēka esamību. D. Prasolova darbi bieži rosina skatītājos pārdomas par nākotni, progresu un mūsu kopīgo atbildību, padarot viņu par vienu no atpazīstamākajiem laikmetīgās skulptūras māksliniekiem Baltijā un Eiropā.

UL House of Science hosts sculpture series from “Signet Bank” art collection –

“The First Crew”

In collaboration with UL Foundation’s patron “Signet Bank”, UL House of Science hosted an exhibition from the bank’s corporate art collection – the sculpture series “The First Crew” by Ukrainian-born artist Denys Prasolov. The artworks were presented to the wider public for the first time.

“The First Crew” is a monumental series of bronze sculptures that speaks, both visually and symbolically, about humanity’s path of development, the relationship between technology and humankind, as well as the strength and fragility that define human existence. Prasolov’s works often invite reflection on the future, progress, and our shared responsibility, making him one of the most recognized contemporary sculptors in the Baltics and Europe.

“The UL Foundation has long fostered a culture of philanthropy, bringing together the private sector and academia. This exhibition is an excellent initiative that once again affirms entrepreneurs and the financial sector as important partners in cultural development,” says Zaiga Pūce, Head of the UL Foundation.

For nearly a decade, “Signet Bank” has been purposefully building a contemporary art collection featuring both Latvian and international artists. The bank’s approach to art patronage goes beyond collecting – it focuses on making significant works of art accessible outside museum and gallery walls. This initiative offers students, researchers, and the wider public the opportunity to encounter and explore contemporary art in everyday settings – this time, within the university environment.

UL Foundation joins World Latvian Economics and Innovation Forum 2025, highlighting diaspora’s key role in advancing education

On 10 July, the World Latvian Economics and Innovation Forum took place in Riga, bringing together more than 600 professionals representing diverse business sectors in Latvia and worldwide to deliberate on issues crucial to the country’s development and security. UL Foundation was one of the forum’s supporters, expressing gratitude for the contributions of diaspora patrons to the development of higher education in Latvia.

Through the initiative of UL Foundation’s patron and PBLA President Pēteris Blumbergs, on 11 July UL Foundation’s Board members Baiba Ebuliņa, Lauris Liepa, and Director Zaiga Pūce met over a working lunch with three Honorary Consuls of Latvia in the U.S. and Australia – Laura Ramane, Uldis Sīpols, and Imants Kīns – as well as two top-tier professionals from the U.S.: artificial intelligence and engineering expert Edgars Kalns, and Roberts Ābele, CEO of IONCOR, a company developing and implementing advanced

Eiropas Zinātnieku naktī 2025 LU notikušajā domapmaiņā “Mūsdienu Latvija: identitāte un valstiskums” šķetināja LU fonda vadītāja Zaiga Pūce un dažādu jomu pētnieki – LU profesore ekonomikā Inna Šteinbuka, vēsturnieks, profesors Gvido Straube, komunikācijas zinātnes profesore Vita Zelče un LU Lībiešu institūta direktors Valts Ernštreits.

Diskusijas dalībnieki uzsvēra, ka identitāte nav tikai pagātnes mantojums – tā ir dzīvs process, kurā cilvēka rīcība un attieksme ik dienu stiprina arī valstiskumu, kas, savukārt, nav tikai valdības atbildība – valstiskums ir ikviena pilsoņa rīcība un attieksme.

Sarunas dalībnieki vienojās, ka Latvijas identitātes kodolu veido valoda, kultūra un piederība vietai. Valts Ernštreits salīdzināja Latvijas kultūras slāņainību ar “karbonādi, kas katrā vietā ir citāda, bet vienmēr mūsējā.”

Savukārt Inna Šteinbuka norādīja, ka valsts identitāte balstās arī labklājībā: “Ja cilvēks dzīvo uz nabadzības sliekšņa, viņš nevar justies lepns par savu valsti. Latvijai jānodrošina cilvēkiem cieņpilna dzīve.”

Vita Zelče uzsvēra, ka identitāte ir stāsts par to, kā mēs saprotam pagātni: “Mums jāmācās ne tikai pieminēt ciešanas, bet arī redzēt savu spēku un varēšanu.” Viņa atgādināja, ka valsts sajūta veidojas caur kopīgu pieredzi un ikdienas rīcību, ne tikai svētku dienās.

Runājot par nākotnes izaicinājumiem, Inna Šteinbuka uzsvēra, ka “drošība kļūst par galveno vērtību – ne tikai militārajā, bet arī sociālajā un ekonomiskajā nozīmē.” Viņa akcentēja, ka Latvijas finanšu stabilitāte un uzticība institūcijām ir nozīmīgs pamats valsts pastāvēšanai Eiropas telpā.

Diskusijas vadītāja Zaiga Pūce noslēgumā rezumēja: “Latvijas nākotne būs tik stipra, cik stipri būs cilvēki, kas tic savai valstij un rīkojas tās labā.”

Discussion “Contemporary Latvia: Identity and Statehood”

What exactly defines Latvia’s identity, how is it changing, and how can we strengthen it in the future? These questions were explored during the discussion “Contemporary Latvia: Identity and Statehood” held at the University of Latvia as part of the European Researchers’ Night 2025, and moderated by Zaiga Pūce, Head of the UL Foundation, together with researchers from various fields – Professor of Economics at UL Inna Šteinbuka, historian and Professor Gvido Straube, Professor of Communication Science Vita Zelče, and Director of the University of Latvia Livonian Institute Valts Ernštreits.

The panel agreed that the essence of Latvian identity lies in its language, culture, and connection to place. Statehood is not solely the responsibility of the government – it depends on the actions and attitudes of every citizen.

HOW CAN LATVIANS LIVING ABROAD DONATE TO THE UNIVERSITY OF LATVIA IN THEIR WILL?

The last will and testament made abroad is first approved in the country where the testator lives and is transferred to Latvia only after the testator has passed away. Therefore, for Latvians living abroad who wish to donate to the University of Latvia in their will, the form and content of the will depends on the regulations of their country of residence.

SAMPLE OF A BEQUEST IN A LAST WILL

A person may bequeath all or part of his or her property or a specific asset or sum of money to the University of Latvia (University of Latvia Foundation). Below you will find sample wording for both cases. Accordingly, you can choose the wording that corresponds to your wishes. Please note that the text of a private will must be handwritten and signed in accordance with the samples below. If you wish your bequest to be used for any specific purposes or programmes of the University of Latvia Foundation, you must additionally indicate this in your will.
