Together, and only together, we bring true grit, commitment, innovation, and manpower to make life-changing impacts for those who are counting on us.

We’ve developed and fine-tuned essential, system-changing collaborations while continuing to generate additional resources to assist families and individuals during another difficult pandemic year. It’s led to important pivots from an emergency response to a more strategic approach to reimagine and rebuild our community. And all while we continue our work to ensure that local families are fed and housed, and have access to affordable healthcare services and quality educational opportunities.

This includes addressing systems, policies, practices and attitudes that have often served to privilege some and disenfranchise others. It is only through an intentional focus on removing these barriers that we can aspire to create the conditions that allow everyone the opportunity to thrive. UWRV has committed to the following internal activities and practices to best model diversity, equity and inclusion: • • • • • • •
Creating a shared language, commitment, and understanding on the importance of DEI with training for all internal staff and Board members, and partnering to support other local human service organizations to do the same. Providing community outreach and vaccine registration efforts to reach minority populations. Ensuring supplies of personal protective and safety equipment are available and distributed to settings with vulnerable populations. Supporting minority-led youth mentoring programs to increase opportunities for positive youth development and curb gang activity. Practicing trauma-informed supervision with staff. Intentional recruiting efforts to increase Board and staff diversity. Forming relationships and supporting efforts that provide voices to minority leaders
Focusing on equity, by intentionally addressing racial and other disparities will ensure that United Way of Roanoke Valley can more effectively fight for the health, education and economic mobility of every person in our community.
Only by working together can we make sure that our gains in equity and inclusion are sustainable. THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF COVID-19 IN OUR REGION When COVID-19 hit, 44% of all households in the Roanoke Valley region were already struggling to make ends meet - a 10-year record high - setting the stage for the unprecedented impact of the pandemic. This includes households below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) and households that are ALICE: Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. With income above the poverty level, ALICE households earn too much to qualify as “poor” but still can’t cover the basics of housing, child care, food, transportation, health care and technology.

HOW UNITED WAY HELPS: UWRV’s ALICE data is helping to inform the expansion of eligibility for resources made available through the CARES Act and the new American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). These acts help accommodate the growing number of families in need of rental assistance, transportation, stimulus payments, job training, and educational and legal assistance. Several community feeding programs were supported such as “Take Out Hunger,” which used donations from businesses and individuals to support local restaurants providing food to people in need.

We worked hard all our life and managed to pay our bills and meet our needs without any help. But COVID made it impossible to earn enough and it’s a shame. United Way Tocqueville Society began in 1984 to honor those individuals who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to philanthropy through their passion for investing in the community and making a difference - personally and collectively. The Tocqueville Society was named in celebration of the vision of French historian Alexis de Tocqueville, who was recognized as a symbol of the true spirit of volunteerism that lives in America's heart. Members of the United Way Tocqueville Society, more than 27,000 across all United Ways in the country, give more than $10,000 or more annually. Community Builder This award recognizes the company that has shown outstanding support, best practices, engagement, volunteering, and advocating for United Way and its partners
Distinguished Service The most non-renewable resource that we have is time. The Distinguished Service award recipient is someone who gives support, gives a voice and gives their time to the needs of United Way and their community.
ECM Hall of Fame This award recognizes the service of ECMs who year after year return to run their organization’s United Way Campaign. Though their longevity is impressive, their effort and commitment to United Way is the perfect model for what it means to LIVE UNITED. Their enthusiasm and love for their community makes them a shining star in their organizations and to us.
ECM of the Year An Employee Campaign Manager is a very special individual. They are an employee volunteer who each year takes on the added responsibility of running their organization’s United Way Campaign. The ECM of the Year is someone who takes their United Way Campaign that extra mile. They use the opportunity to build their leadership, build workplace engagement and build their community. Each year we chose an ECM who brings that extra bit of spark to their organization’s campaign by providing volunteer experience, special events, education, community engagement and so much more.
Impact This award focuses on the organizations and individuals that are strong advocates for the United Way Impact Fund. The Impact Fund provides the discretionary resources that drive our investments in critical, life-changing programs across the Roanoke Valley. This support allows our volunteers to dive deep into the needs of the community to implement strategies and actions that create lasting change. Impact Fund dollars are leveraged tenfold for maximum impact in the community.
Lead United Recognizes a very special individual that leads their peers and employees not only in the daily work but also in the importance of supporting their community. This person advocates for United Way by leading through example.
Shining Star We often refer to this group of people as the “boots on the ground.” They are the organizations that provide direct services to our community, running the programs our workplaces and donors support. We at the United Way know how special and vital these organizations are to serving our community and we could simply not thank them enough. This award recognizes a Community Impact Partner that has gone the extra mile to re-invest back into their community and the “boots on the ground” work that help lift up our Valley.
Spirit of the Community Each year, this award recognizes a company exhibiting outstanding year-round support of not only United Way, but their community as a whole. DAY OF ACTION Each year, Day of Action invites volunteers from all over the community to rally together around important issues. This June, as part of a grassroots movement to engage people in fighting food insecurities, volunteers built, installed and stocked five Little Free Pantries. The pantries were installed at the following locations: • Boys and Girls Club 1714 9th St SE, Roanoke, VA 24013 • Morningside Farms 917 Morgan Ave SE, Roanoke, VA 24013 • Glade Hill Rescue Squad 5042 Old Franklin Turnpike, Glade Hill, VA 24092 • George Washington Carver Garden 602 Loudon Avenue NW, Roanoke, VA 24016 • Hustle Haven 355 Campbell Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24016 Little Free Pantries are not a solution to food insecurity or food deserts, but they do provide easy, anonymous access to food and basic need products. In another Day of Action project, volunteers painted and installed birdhouses at two senior living facilities, Richfield Living and South Roanoke Nursing & Rehabilitation, as part of an effort to bring joy to older residents. Feeding and watching colorful, active birds can be especially calming for seniors, offering connection with the outside world.
